The best way to put it, it's kinda like a hybrid of a shave ice & ice cream, as the treat has a milky ice cream consistency, yet is kinda has a shave ice texture when you scoop up this treat. I've known about the Samurai treat for years, as I've purchased cups of this delicious treat from Longs Drugs, and other supermarkets, but as much as I have eaten this delicious treat, I've never had the chance to goto the actual Samurai store where they make this delicious treat until recently! If I'm correct, there are two Samurai stores.........one is located in Kalihi, and the other is located in Aiea. I haven't been to the Aiea store yet, but was lucky enough to check out the Kalihi store. Getting parking here maybe a challenge, but on the day I came here with my friends, we were lucky enough to get a parking space in the Samurai parking lot. The lot is so small, I think only about 2 or 4 cars can fit into that small parking lot. As I walked up to the ordering window, I was greeted right away, and upon looking over the wall menu, I decided to get the Vanilla Cream & Strawberry treat, and my friend got the Blue Vanilla treat. What can I say about the Samurai treat? Although a wee bit pricey for a small size cup ($3.50), it is truly as advertised! The best part about coming to the actual Samurai store is that they offer more flavors here, then what you would get if you went to Longs Drugs, or a regular supermarket. The area isn't popular so just be aware. There was a bench in front for us to enjoy our cold treat. Not the type of thing you wanna travel with. The soft serve was really nice. There were different flavors and swirl combinations. If you've tried the frozen prepacked samurai, its similar. Because we aren't close to the area, we would rather just check out the Aiea location. It has been a while since I've been here and they have totally revamped their look. They have brand new clear cups with their logo on it. If you get a small or a large size the cups are the same, but of course a whole lot more in the large. The small is perfect size for adults, but my two kids could share the small. The price is great for the amount that you get in that cup. They even ask if you need any lids on your cups. Perfect for on the go! They also have other treats to choose from such as shakes and floats. They have candies and popcorn as well. Parking can be a bit tight because it is in a warehouse area. They have a few stalls right in front that you can park in. Other than that you have to find street parking or wait. There are some benches out front if you want to sit and eat. The staff is very friendly and they have a little doorbell to ring if they aren't at the window. On a daily basis they have so many flavors to choose from! Hmmm... how do I go about this.....? This has to be one of the most disappointing experience ever since we got to Honolulu last week. We've made a day plan that included this place due to High reviews and raves. When we finally got here, we were excited. I parked, walked up to the window, ordered my soft serves with excitement and watched the nice lady make it like a kid waiting to unwrap a birthday gift. But to my horror, the lady first pour one flavor in on one side then pours the other one in another side, the two flavors stood in the cup side by side.... not tangled, not twirled, not what I expected. Disappointed, but I already paid and we are ok a schedule, I walked back to the car thinking "at least it will taste good and the kids will be happy" Boy was I wrong!!!!! Those two cup tastes horrible!!!! It is artificial sweetener to the max!!!! My daughter even said "dad, this thing is nasty, taste like a bad Pez candy intensified" OMG it is the most horrific tasting ice I have ever tried. I do not understand why they have such raving reviews! Trust me, I did not give them a 1 star and a bad review for not giving me a swirled soft serve, it tastes legitimately horrible. It's good to hang around Yelpers because they show you a lot of good places that you never knew of. Thanks to Cathy and Gary for showing Angel and me this cute snack shop in a remote, industrial part of Kalihi! I had been to the Aiea location of Samurai several times, but never this one. I'm not sure I would be able to find it myself. Luckily, Gary gave Cathy and me a ride because the parking is tight. There is a small lot (tandem style) and free street parking (if you can find a space)! It's a take out situation... You order from the counter and sit outside on a bench, or just stand up. A very simple operation for this soft serve type ice cream. The difference between the Aiea shop and this one is the variety of flavors. There is more selection here. This was the first time I had the honeydew flavor - yum - and the orange swirl flavor (like a creamsicle) - wow! I think I will have to return and try the other options!! Note: I saw a recipe for this "guri guri" or "Goodie Goodie" type of ice cream but have not tried it. It's basically flavored soda (like strawberry) and condensed milk, mixed and frozen together... Also: You can get the pre-packaged frozen style in a cup from Costco and Times Supermarket, but it's hard and solid. I don't like to scrape and work so hard for my food! LOL! So - go to the Aiea or Kalihi location of Samurai and get it soft and FRESH!!! There are other snack items available (like popcorn and cookies). I gave in and bought a bag of bacon chips. Samurai has two locations - one in Kalihi (at their processing plant) and one in Aiea below the Aiea Bowling Alley! At this location, there is plenty of parking and a seating area where you can enjoy your ice cream! I've often eaten the Samurai ice cream cups that they sell in all of the grocery stores. They come in flavors such as Strawberry, Strawberry Banana, Strawberry Vanilla, Chocolate Haupia (coconut pudding), Pineapple Haupia, Honeydew Melon, etc. One of the clerks from the grocery store told me about the Samurai soft serve. It was love at first site! Samurai now serves soft service ice cream. They give super generous servings - $2.50 for the small and $3.50 for the large. The ice cream tastes like the old fashioned ice cream from Maui (Tasaka's Guri Guri). The strawberry is the best and most popular flavor. Taste like strawberry candy and condensed milk. This of course was our first time at this location. Parking is a little tight, two spots I'd say and some street parking. Wow can I just say this is my absolute favorite place to get ice cream. If you are raised in Hawaii guri guri ice cream is a staple in your life. I've been going to Samurai since I was a little kid it's one of my most favorite places to go. Especially this location! they now include different types of toppings and you get a giant Oreo cookie with every ice cream you order. My favorite flavor is the melon strawberry flavor with mochi balls and Oreo cookie crumbs, sometimes they don't have it in its soft serve form but they usually have it packed in ready to go pints. Do you still only have this flavor on Christmas Eve I'm so glad they have a year around now. I'm perfectly fine with the classic blue vanilla and strawberry if the melon strawberry is out. Staff is friendly & service is fast. every time I went there was no line, however parking is limited there's only two stalls. since people are in and out you don't have to wait very long for a parking space. I've been seeing quite a bit of posts about Samurai but never had the urge to drive down and try it. Last night my sister had a dinner party and one of her guests brought a whole bunch of the 4-oz cups and my immediate reaction - - SCORE!!! With so many reviews and bold colors, I was very excited to try it and couldn't wait for dessert. And then time came so I see a whole bunch of various sweets but immediately dive into the chocolate haupia cup. The one problem when you have high expectations is setting the bar high and unfortunately this didn't make the cut. It was on the bland side. Perhaps I'm used to eating ice cream rich in fat and flavor. I understand this is sherbet but maybe I chose the wrong flavor. The 4-oz cup is $1.50. I'd rather pay another 50 cents and eat the Spumoni or Gianduja from La Gelateria Gelato. The sorbetto from La Gelateria was way better than Samurai's sherbet. Recently, I tried the chocolate haupia and I fell in love with it. What a great mix of those two flavors!
