That's why this comes down to two stars. Disappointingly, the breakfast version of the country-fried steak for supper (yes, they're different on the menu) was a major letdown. As shown, the "steak" came out seriously overcooked and tasted heavily of old oil that something burned in. The sparse gravy under the meat was cold. The fried potatoes were barely past raw and had the same burnt-oil finish. They say you can't mess up scrambled eggs ... so they say. Why didn't I send it back? I saw that Sam's Restaurant was a few miles away, and we decided to give them a try. They are right off the 90, and they have a large car port attached where you can park your vehicle. We were greeted and were told to sit anywhere we would like - we chose a booth by the window. The menu serves breakfast all day, various dinner plates, and even kid options. An impromptu stop on our way to st Marie's Idaho from St. Louis, Mo. This is an old fashioned diner! We ordered shrimp dinner which came with 2 sides , soup and salad bar. I had the Patty melt which was pretty darn good, it came with a side of fries that were good but I like mine a little on the crispy side (you can also choose tots or homemade onion rings if you choose) and soup or salad. I chose soup because it was Friday and I love clam chowder which was also good with nice size bites of clam and potato. I've driven between Champaign, Illinois and Seattle, Washington twice and both times, I've somehow managed to stop here at Sam's. (I recognized it this time after I pulled into the lot.) I'm even sitting at the same booth and I have the same waitress. I know I may be acting like a child, but I just ordered bread pudding for breakfast. I deserve it. It's a 2200 mile drive. This place is right next door to the Silver Inn hotel. If you stay in this hotel, do not, I repeat, do not eat here. It's probably not a coincidence that there's an emergency clinic across the street because you may need their services if you decide to eat here. The first thing you notice upon entering is the overwhelming odor of mold and grease. It's nauseating. The tables are sticky as well. Service is fine, food not so much. Our BLT had one meager slice of bacon and the onion rings were so greasy that they left a puddle in the bottom of the basket. The clubhouse sandwich was okay. From what I saw on the menu I would say that most of the lunch items are fried. We couldn't eat the onion rings at all and while I did eat my sandwich it didn't sit well at all. Eggs Benedict is very yummy but the gut buster has become my favorite. The gravy is delicious and the biscuits are light and fluffy. If you hate dry biscuits give these a shot. I miss the old days of Yelp when a 4-star review was referred to as "I'm a fan!" because that is exactly how we feel about Sam's! And why are we fans? It's simple...biscuits and gravy. Sam's has the absolute best biscuits and gravy. Specifically, the "Gutbuster", which is biscuits and gravy with bits of sausage and bacon in the gravy and two eggs. The biscuits are perfect: flakey, tender, and buttery. And that gravy! Light, airy, and just a hint of gritty...it's definitely homemade and done so with the sausage drippings. I hate the super thick and creamy gravies that nearly every other place does. Sam's is just so tasty and it goes perfectly with the biscuits. This place is about as "no frills" as you can get, but that is part of their charm. Service was super friendly, making us feel like locals. I think they might be suffering from labor shortages like a lot of places, so if they're busy, service might be slow, but it's totally worth it. Would not recommend the corned beef hash, as it's super finely diced corned beef that didn't hit the spot. But never mind that...get the Gutbuster! I did...two days in a row. read more

For a road side restaurant I was so impressed how comfortable and very welcoming the staff was. Seat yourself, menus at the table. The server was extremely friendly and was very patient with the other picky people in my group. I went for it with the Chicken Fried Steak. This was a feast salad and soup included along with a baked potato veggies and dinner roll. The batter was cooked to perfection the gravy was authentic country gravy. Delicious food! If it's crowded (as it was when I was there), and you are in a hurry, you don't want to come here, as nearly everything is made to order. What I walked in, there were about 18 people already seated, with a steady flow of people coming and going. I sat at a table for two, and the busgirl asked if I would like some coffee. But since I can't stand the stuff, I asked for a glass of ice water. My waitress came over pretty quickly, and asked if I would like some coffee. Well, since the bus girl was bussing a table, I repeated it to her. I ordered the two egg breakfast, which included choice of potatob (hash browns and home fries), bacon or sausage (patties or links) and toast. As I ordered, I asked the waitress for less salt in the eggs and hash browns. Her reply, we don't put salt in our dishes (hense, the "bleh" response in some reviews). Even though I was seated, and my order taken promptly, there were several people ahead of me. So, I had to wait about 25 minutes (and it looked like chef was training someone too). My meal arrived pretty quickly, after it was placed under the warming lamps. So, it was hot. However, when you don't add seasoning in the cooking process, adding it after the fact doesn't help much (especially for what's on the bottom). The breakfast was good, and the price was fairly reasonable. However, much of their menu is in the double digits per plate. So, for a small town Diner, I was surprised to see that (and being old school, breakfast shouldn't cost more than $10.00). My waitress was the only one working the front for the entire place. And the bus girl, was performing double duty; bussing tables and giving more coffee or water to customers. So, they were both busting butt doing stuff. And, they still took time to say hi and smile to everyone. But, yet another place where I wasn't asked how things were (given the crowd, about 22 when I left, I can understand it). Now, since I'm on my road trip, it's obvious that I won't be going back there. But, had I lived in the area, I'm not sure I would have gone back. read more

Sam's is a great place for breakfast. They have traditional fare, but you have to get their sausage links with whatever you order. They are big with great flavor. It gets really busy, but have a great staff that keeps it moving quite nicely. We have never tried them for dinner, but I would imagine it's regular diner fare. But.. we arrived, seated ourselves, we're greeted by a teenaged waitress that could barely pronounce words who gave us our menus filled up by an experienced waitress taking our order. Not one gave that small town feel. When our order arrived, the French toast was smothered in brown hair. I kindly looked around to see other customers enjoying their meals, stood up, and went to the counter to ask fro our bill. TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE, WILL NEVER BE BACK. They forgot to make my order. I sat at the front, 10 feet from the register. The server looked at me several times but never said a word. After more than 30 minutes the cook walks to the front and asks the server if ive gotten my order yet?! They didn't say anything to me, just hoped I wouldn't notice that my nachos and chicken strips to go that should never take more that 10 minutes MAX were now going on 45 minutes.
