Still love this place! I wrote a review a few months ago and I went today so thought I'd give an update. The spicy gyro is soooo good. They have a great deal with a half gyro, fries and drink for under $15.00. And the fries are awesome because they have a good crispiness. Today, the owners wife made cookies so I bought one and dang it was good! This neighborhood spot is small, no parking lot, and not a modern looking restaurant, but the food is great, price is super reasonable and the owner is always very nice. Have been getting carryout gyros from Sam's for many years. They are simple but flavorful with generous amount of meat and just the right amount of cucumber sauce. Now I am able to order takeout from the Yelp app, which makes ordering easier than a phone call. Also tried the fries for the first time and they were pleasingly crunchy. Don't be fooled by the modest interior decor. This place makes a great gyro sandwich. read more

Ordered from Sam's for pick up. I had a full size beef Gyro and my daughter had a chicken Shawarma sandwich. She said she would've preferred having it over rice, and she really loved the depth of flavor on the chicken. We also had an order of hummus which we loved but the bread was just store-bought bread, so it was just OK and the lentil soup my daughter loved it. I thought it needed a little more spices to it overall a delicious meal. The service when I went to pick up the the order was great. He was very helpful and quick. They were near closing time so there was only one other couple in the building. It's a relatively small place, but very clean on the corner of 54th and college. I will definitely go again. read more

Sam's gyros are delicious. Tangy tziki sauce and perfect lamb with lots of veges.... You will need a breathe mint after if you are smart enough to ask for onions! Also their Greek salad is a taste of Athens. I'd say this place and Greek Island downtown are my perineal favorites. The owner is a low key guy who is always working and very happy to get you what you need. The place has been newly renovated so is a great corner spot. Have passed this place many times as I live in the area, but finally got to try it for the first time the other day. I got the full size gyro and my friend got the half size. The full size was just two half pitas wrapped separately which was kinda strange. The bread could be better, and in my opinion the bread can make or break a gyro. Back again!! Spanakopita was still light and fluffy and melt in your mouth delicious! And I think their chicken shawarma is the best I have tried in town! Wow! This is a hidden gem. This was one of the best gyros I've had in quite some time: the meat was well seasoned and moist not greasy, the slices were large and plentiful. The salad, cucumbers and onion were fresh and crunchy. The fries with feta were crispy, and although I would have preferred more feta, tasty. This will be our new favorite for gyros! read more

I will not support this location. I wanted the Gyros with the open pita bread. I ordered from their site. I was told I needed to order via Door Dash to get the sandwich I desired. Not going to lie, I had higher hopes going into this place. We spent about $25 on two to-go meals and it was just not that great of food for the price. I'd prefer to get Canal Bistro or make the hike up to Petos in Castleton next time. Staff are not wearing masks (well, on their chins) and it feels a bit grimey inside. read more

I've been wanting to try this location and recently saw the promotion on by one gyro get one free so figured it was the perfect time to stop by and pick up dinner. The promotion is on the half sides, so I basically got two full size gyros each for the price of their half. The full size is honestly two sandwiches with plenty of meat, my boyfriend devoured both of his while I kept one for lunch the next day. We got the spicy, I feel like typically spicy gyros aren't even that spicy to begin with. Well let me tell you....they are spicy here!!! Hence why I also only ate one half. It was great and delicious but I would have loved a lot more Taziki sauce on the gyro which is the only reason I'm giving it 4 starts instead of 5. Next time I'll be sure to ask for extra sauce. We also got the Greek fries and a Greek salad. Loved both sides! The large Greek salad also came with a pita to eat on the side. Great friendly service as well! I'll be back again! read more

If you haven't had a gyro from Sam's you're missing out! I I've mostly had gyros from random restaurants, and gas stations- yes gas stations lol do not sleep on gas station gyros okay. Sam's was my first authentic experience and it did not disappoint! Its a little cafe with a few tables and 1-2 employees. Our waiter who was also our cook was super nice and personable. He explained a few of the popular menu items and made good suggestions. I went with the Saganaki, a gyro w/ extra cucumber sauce and Turkish coffee. The Saganaki was new for me, its deep fried cheese that they fry and flame. It wasn't nasty or bad, but definitely an acquired taste. The gyro was AMAZING! The meat was tender and beyond flavorful. But the cucumber sauce is what set it off! It's not a thick creamy sauce like other places, it's chucks of fresh cucumbers in a lighter cream sauce. I loved having the crunch of the cucumber with my gyro. So if you're looking for an amazing gyro, Sam's is the place to go. read more

I honestly don't know why nobody goes here. It's good! Like, its cheap, its really fast, its in a good location, and, most importantly, the food tastes good! They're doing a 5$ gyro thing right now and that is an insane deal to me, I went there for lunch today and for 5$ I got a giant gyro that was fresh, hot, and delicious. I've lived in Indianapolis for about 10 years, and I recently visited Sam's Gyro's for my first time. My colleagues and I met to plan out a music video collaboration, and the environment was so creative and open. Also, the lentil soup I enjoyed was AMAZING and filling, and the service was awesome. Our server brought out a sample of falafel for us to try on the house, and it was delicious. Will definitely be back! read more

Slow service, restaurant is filthy, & the staff definitely isn't taking COVID seriously - there's one guy meeting with customers & making all the food, with no mask on. I love that this place is close to where I live. So everyone I'm wanting a goo gyro it's just down the street. The meat is seasoned to perfection and the pita bread is so fresh. The restaurant wasn't busy, but it seems like a lot of pressure to put on one waitress to do dining room and carry-out. The Baba Ganoush was a soupy weird mess of eggplant with a smoky flavor. So I was really craving a gyro and I had to be in BRipp tonight anyways, so I figured tonight was the night I would try Sam's! I love hipster Mediterranean vibe that the restaurant gives, its super chill and uniquely decorated, and my waitress fit right in. She was really great, and she always made sure I was taken care of! My gyro was ok. Just ok. I ordered the lunch special with the half sandwich half salad and the greek salad was...again, just ok. Nothing special. I don't know if it was just because I had high expectations for this place having super authentic food, or maybe my pallet is just not fine tuned to the Mediterranean ways quite yet, but I just was under impressed. I have to say that for the price I paid ($9.80) I was DEFINITELY not happy about my lunch choice. The portions were large, but thats not saying too much when you aren't crazy about the dish in the first place. I'll definitely give this place another go, I'm not one to give up that easily, but next time I will surely be trying something different and not having my expectations as high as my first go at things. read more

Minus half a star. So I gave this place benefit because it pretty tasty. The decor could use a bit of a sprucing up. The hummus was very tasty. Very close to some of the places I have been in the past. The chicken shawarma was okay. The chicken was tender and moist with some good flavor from the marinades and onions mixed with the chicken. The beef shawarma was the same as the chicken although a bit more tough than the tenderness of the chicken. The biggest area I had an issue with was the rice. The rice had very little flavor. Other than that the service was prompt. The Coke they serve was oddly good. Like Atlanta Coke factory good. read more

I tried Sam's Gyros for the first time today, eager to see how its gyros measured up against others in the city. My heretofore favorite had been the gyros from Canal Bistro, and the gyro meat wrapped in soft steamed pita from Cairo Cafe. I gotta say, my favorites still haven't changed. I tasted Sam's spicy gyro, hoping to be blown away. It was good but not amazing: Its "cucumber" sauce, which I guess is colloquial for tzatsiki, tasted a bit more like thick sour cream than yogurt. Kudos for turning up the heat factor, though: Your lips burn after eating the whole thing. I also had an appetizer plate with hummus, falafel, baba ghanouj and tabouli. The flavors were more subtle than I'm used to for salty, garlicky Middle Eastern food. For some, that would be good. For me, I was left wanting a bit more. Still, this place is good, and CHEAP. Two meals came to about $15. You can't beat that. read more

I always get the spicy gyro. Always delicious. For the price and quick service, you can't go wrong. I found a picture online of the gyro with sour cream. The amount of sour cream on that picture is true to form. It's an impressive amount. I normally get the tzatziki sauce though. They stuff the gyro with all the meat and then stuff the sauce on top of that, so it's all on one end. The half gyro is more than enough to fill me up, but I always order the full gyro which is really served as two halves and costs only a few bucks more. I frequent this restaurant for a quick, good, filling and well priced meal. I recommend it for take out, but not so much for dining in. read more

I decided to check this place out when I got an unshakable craving for gyros. I was a little skeptical when I pulled up and saw that I was the only customer in the place. Based on previous reviews, seems they aren't the best spot for a sit down meal... The inside isn't much. Its split into two sections. The main entrance opens to a small room with a couple tables and a checkout counter that overlooks the kitchen. This room opens into a much nicer space with many more tables and probably seating for 100. I'm assuming this is the renovated side after the fire that was mentioned in previous reviews. As I mentioned, I was hangry for some gyros, so I went big and got the gyro plate. It came with a hefty portion of gyro meat (choice of regular or spicy, I went with spicy), onions, lettuce, tomato, and cucumber sauce. It also came with a Greek salad on the side...I must say that was some of the best gyro meat I've ever had! The cucumber sauce was excellent. They have decent sized chunks of cucumber, which give the gyro a nice crunch. Their homemade Greek dressing was spot on as well. All in all, this place hit the spot, and I recommend the spicy gyro. I will definitely be back to try some of the other dishes, or maybe just the gyro...hard to resist. read more

I had some friends picking up food and asked them to get me a half gyro and salad combo, based on their online menu. They get there and that combo ended at 4pm (their website says absolutely nothing about a lunch menu). So I decide to get a small appetizer platter since the cost would only be $2 more than ordering the gyro and salad separately. Asked if I could substitute extra tabbouleh for the baba ghanouj or some other appetizer. No substitutions. Sam's - your food is great, and you've often done substitutions in the past. This is a situation where your website isn't correct, I adapt and you can't work with me? Update your website and be a little flexible when you have incorrect information on your site. read more
