Sam's is a small little shop that you should make sure to keep your eye out to spot. We decided to get some chicken & a few sides when we visited. I can confidently say the chicken was delicious & was certainly crispy when they made it. Unfortunately by the time we got home (maybe 15 minutes away) the chicken & fries had to be put in the air fryer to get their crisp back because of the condensation since the food was packaged so hot. I figured we had to give this place a try, since the only fried chicken in town I could tell you about comes from KFC, Popeyes or Krispy Krunchy, so pretty much anyone in the country already knows. I just happened to pass by this place on my way to Solvay and looked it up. Local place, decent reviews, fried chicken we haven't tried before. Can't go wrong. We saw that the steak & cheese sub had good reviews, and it fits our philosophy of trying as many different Philly subs as possible. The sub turned out to be better than average, but I give them extra credit for the meat, because as far as we could tell it didn't come from the same Sysco "Philly Meat" pre-cut squares that 90% of restaurants use for them. The meat was great in shape and texture, and it combined well with the really soft bun. A reliable steak and cheese sub, no complaints. Someone was eating fried clams, and they looked amazing so we threw in half a pound. I don't order fried clams a lot, so I got the math wrong. For those who don't know this, half a pound of fried clams is always too little. The clams were cooked perfectly. They were so soft we couldn't stop eating them, and that small to-go box never stood a chance against us. Let's not forget the main attraction, the 8 piece chicken meal. I don't believe there's such a thing as bad fried chicken, but unfortunately that makes forgettable the new worst. This wasn't really different from fried chicken we've bought from grocery stores or had at buffets. Just generic fried chicken. We only ended up eating a few pieces the night we got it, and used the rest of the meat for salads, pasta, things we made at home for the next couple meals. Saw this place mentioned in a Central New York hidden gem for their cheesesteaks and the cheesesteak was amazing! My husband is originally from Philadelphia and he said it was the best cheesesteak hoagie (that includes lettuce and tomato) outside of Philly he has had. It was also full of meat!. It was absolutely delicious and kind of happy, but sad that we live an hour away so we can't go too often. The Cajun fries were great too! They are also known for their fried chicken so we took home a four-piece and re-heated it for lunch the next day. It was extremely moist and very good. I moved to Syracuse 7 years ago and I've been searching for the best fried chicken ever since. I've tried many of the popular places but hadn't really found anything remotely comparable to southern fried chicken. I had almost given up hope until a co-worker recommended Sam's Chicken Land in Solvay. When I walked in I was greeted by a very friendly man who took my order (a 4 piece dinner with fries and coleslaw) and promptly began to bread my chicken and cook it fresh to order. One of my biggest complaints is that many local places will pre-cook their chicken and allow them to sit under a warming unit, sometimes for far too long. When I got my food it was piping hot and everything was perfectly crispy. The fries were tossed in a well-balanced seasoning that I think was also sprinkled over the chicken as well. The coleslaw was pretty average but not bad by any means. Now for the star of the show, the chicken. When I bit into the first piece it had that distinctive crunch you'd expect from a properly fried chicken. It was perfectly cooked, juicy, and well seasoned. Every bite was just an explosion of umami, like getting punched directly in the tastebuds. I wanted to try a bite in the parking lot while it was still hot and while I intended to only have the one bite, I finished 2 pieces before I even got it home lol. I'd put their chicken against anywhere in the city, possibly anywhere over the Mason-Dixon line, it was that good. I now understand why this place has such a dedicated, almost cult-like following. Over the next few years, Sam and his wife, Nazar, perfect his delicious recipes and built a loyal following. In 1980, Sam made the difficult decision to sell his business to send his children to college. One year later, people miss Sam's chicken and food, and he missed it, too. He opened Sam's Chicken Land in Solvay at 527 Charles Ave. Sam and his wife Nazar keep the decor simple, and focused on the food and their customers. In 2009, Greg Hrynyk buys the business in April, and quickly realizes that many customers today were customers when Sam first opened the doors more than 29 years ago. At Sam's, chickens and steaks are bought fresh daily from a local butcher, steaks are hand cut, and the chicken is seasoned every morning with Sam's original seasonings. I wanted to find good, fresh fried chicken in the Syracuse area that was not from a chain store. My search lead me to Sam's Chicken Land. The ratings were great, so I ordered from them one day for lunch. I was craving buffalo chicken, so I went with their buffalo tenders and special seasoned fries. Their website is kinda a pain to use if you're ordering online, but I eventually got it worked out. My food was not ready when I got there, but I only had a 15 minutes drive, so I waited another 15 minutes or so before my food was ready. Everything was alright...I wasn't blown away. Kinda hard to screw up buffalo tenders, but covering them in sauce doesn't really speak to their breading recipe. On top of that, while the seasoning they use on their fries is tasty, they use cheap crinkle fries, and I personally despise crinkle fries. So I decided to give them another try. This time, I ordered a 3 piece chicken only, plus an order of their onion rings. My food again wasn't ready when I arrived, even though it had been 35 minutes since I ordered this time. Their chicken is breaded and fried fresh when you order...lesson being, if you don't have 30 minutes to an hour to wait, this isn't the place for you. It simply isn't grab and go. However, if you have the time to wait, the chicken is definitely worth it. The onion rings were also pretty good, also seemed fresh made, large and juicy when I bit into them. But the chicken was awesome. Juicy, tender, crispy, seasoned well, extremely flavorful. Definitely delicious. So...I'd definitely go back, and I'd recommend the fried chicken to anyone. Their chicken is great and fries just beware they pour a heap of season salt on top of everything it's their signature. Often I order ahead for lunch. If you want a good grilled chicken sandwich this is the place! The chicken sandwich has the grilled boneless chicken breast chopped with mayo cheese, lettuce, tomato. The fries are excellent! I Used to eat here back when Sam owned it and I thought when the new owner took over that would be the end of it. Guess what he nailed it! If I didn't know better I would think Sam was still in the kitchen wipping up my chicken sandwiches! I have since ordered the chicken wings but I think they need a little bit more flavor! We came in from out of town, and were looking for some cheap chow. It just happened that we both had a hankering for fried chicken, and heard about this hole-in-the-wall place in a low rent neighborhood, so we checked it out. For the price of ONE meal at most of the other restaurants in town, we were able to get a meal for two very hungry people, with leftovers. While the place won't win any prizes for decor, the food more than made up for it. The chicken is battered and seasoned in house, it was nice and juicy, great flavor, and piping hot. The fries were nicely seasoned; they went a little beyond just your ordinary boring salt and pepper. I am really disappointed to write this, as I fell in love with Sam's 12-13 years ago when Sam still ran the restaurant. But tonight, I had such a horrible experience trying to order delivery to our store in the mall, that I'm not sure I will ever patronize this place ever again. Tonight, myself and a few coworkers decided to order delivery from Sam's Chicken Land for our dinner break. I've been talking Sam's up to my coworkers for a long time, since I've been patronizing this restaurant for years and love their food. We all decided what we wanted, and then I called the store to place our order. Upon calling, an older woman answered the phone and asked for the delivery address. I told her that the order would be coming to a store in Destiny USA mall. Upon telling her this, she hesitated, and then loudly (quite incredulously, I might add) exclaimed "I'm not going to Destiny USA, no way!!". I was actually silent for a moment, because of the rude, aggressive way she responded. For a moment, I almost wasn't sure if she was speaking to me because of her demeanor. I responded saying, "um... I didn't know this would be such a problem. I wasn't aware that you didn't deliver to the mall.." I heard someone speaking to her in the background, so she then said "wait a minute" and put me on hold. While on hold, due to poor reception in the mall, my call dropped before she returned. I processed what had just happened, and decided that I would not be ordering from this establishment. But, I still called back to speak with a manager about how I was treated. When calling back, the same woman answered the phone. I explained who I was, that I had tried to order delivery to the mall, and my call had dropped. I then asked to speak to a manager. She disregarded my request to speak with him, and continued to loudly talk over me saying "look, I can deliver to the mall but only if you come outside and pick it up". Once again, I told her I wanted to speak to the manager because I didn't feel that her reaction was appropriate. She then told me that the owner/ manager was listening to her interaction with me in the moment, and told her that they would deliver if I came outside to pick up the order. I told her this wouldn't have been a problem if she wasn't incredibly rude right off the bat, and told me this before she raised her voice to me. She continued talking over me, trying to justify her behavior, while at the same time acknowledging that her response was out of line. She said that while she knows her response was rude, that my request to have food delivered to the mall "caught her off guard". I'm sorry, but if a customer calls to have delivery (a service you advertise that you provide) to a location that is 2.3 miles away from your establishment, and that throws you off enough to treat a customer that way... then maybe you shouldn't be representing this business by answering the phone. The issue itself wasn't even that they did not want to walk the order to my store. It was the outlandishly rude response of their employee that was the most disappointing. She treated me like I was requesting a service from them that I knew they didn't provide. Their business and website clearly states "we deliver". Not "we deliver to anywhere but Destiny USA". At the end of the conversation, I was never given the opportunity to talk to the manager. And as I wrapped up the conversation by telling them I will not be ordering from them again, I was told "I understand". Not once did I receive an apology. The entire time I was explaining my disappointment to this individual, she did nothing but talk over me, and make excuses for her behavior. I am a manager in the customer service industry, and if I heard my employee speaking to a customer over the phone in the manner I was being spoken to, I would have intervened in this situation to save a customer. I'm pretty saddened to know the owner was within earshot while this was occurring, and at no time tried to speak with me about this. It tells me that this behavior is acceptable to them, while I know that Sam would have never allowed one of his customers to be treated in this manner. I also work for a store that does regular catering for our 25+ associates during the year, and we often like to patronize local, non chain restaurants for these events. My associates LOVE fried chicken, and were looking forward to trying Sam's. Unfortunately, it's not looking like they will get the opportunity to try them out, at least not here. Also, people who habitually work in the mall get sick of eating mall food all the time, and often order out from other local restaurants to have their meals brought in. Never have we ever had an experience like we did today with Sam's. I guess the moral of the story is, the food is good, but if you work at the mall, don't ask them to deliver to you. The patronage of mall employees doesn't mean enough to even treat them with respect, let alone walk to order to your store. read more

My grandma met my grandpa because of San. What he made with what he had was absolutely amazing. My entire childhood all I knew was Sam's chicken land. My grandma talks about Sam a lot. When my dad was a kid he went to same every single day after school. For years. Now I go there when I need my filling of absolutely amazing food. My review is... the best people made the restaurant what it is. Food is 10/10. Service WAS 10/10. Now it's owned by another man that bought it from Sam a few years ago. Service is still good but not what Sam's was originally. Service now is 7/10 because sometimes they are "short staffed" and can't make deliveries.
