Chicken fried steak and buffalo chicken sandwich
    Karina E.

We've come twice now to this place and they always have excellent service. It's pretty good, the chicken fried steak was huge and I love the attention to detail. The first time we came was for breakfast and we had the breakfast tacos and pancakes and they were pretty good as well. A staple for Castroville and it's so big so I know it gets busy and they handle it well! Reminds me of an old time diner.

Always a great option for breakfast. Food is good, staff is friendly. Sit at the counter and get teased by pie and make friends.

Stopped in on our way out from the corn maze. It's obvious this restaurant has been here for a while. It's a diner that has the feel of a house. They have many different options to choose from. Lots of fried food. The restaurant itself is rundown filling but overall the service was good and everyone there was friendly. They have yummy baked goods in the front as you check out.

I have to say, I am underwhelmed with Sammy's. I understand the draw of a long standing-feels like home-family friendly place, but I feel like with all that going for you, you'd put a little more love in the food too. Neither of my party of three was particularly knocked out of the park with our breakfast plates. Ultimately, the dishes simply lacked flavor. We did ask for a salsa and were given a delicious homemade bowl, however, this didn't make up for the overall lack. A plus though is definitely the friendliness of the staff! Whether you're a regular or an out of towner, expect the same cheerful service any day of the week!

This family friendly restaurant is full of cozy home atmosphere. When you walk in, if they know you, they call you by name. They did not know us, and the welcome was just as friendly as if we were long lost friends. The decor caters a bit to the clientele, a bit older, but I felt like I was walking into my Grandma's house. I was able to pick my own seat the day we arrived. The menu is full of all the comfort foods you can imagine starting with the classic chicken fried steak and even a Watergate salad! This was very relaxed. The food was piping hot and ready to be served by amazing staff that were super pleasant and eager to help! Hubby and I grabbed from their special menu. I got the chicken tender special and hubby got the southwest chicken. The Southwest chicken had a creamy cheese sauce with a flavorful kick, but not too overpowering, then it was topped with chopped tomatoes, green peppers and bacon bits. It was very tasty! The side salads were served with mixed greens and tomatoes with homemade ranch dressing and honey mustard. We got sides of mashed potatoes, green beans and fried okra. Super scrumptious and homemade. We were driving through, as we do often and finally stopped. The parking lot was super full as always. Please stop and enjoy this Texas icon!

The food is American and Mexican. You are able to get breakfast food anytime. Their French toast is to die for. I definitely recommend it. I also recommend the fried catfish. My husband liked a smothered spicy chicken dish. They have daily and weekly specials which are reasonably priced. and I tried one of them which was tasty. I didn't care for the Cole slaw or potato salad. The food is home style cooking. Our waitress on the first visit was the best and had been employed there for 23 years. Forgive me, her name was either Velinda or Belinda. She was always on the ball. She made sure our drinks never ran dry and answered our questions about the menu. We've been back three times in the past two months if that is a good indication of how much we like the food.

Just stop and get coffee and pie... Worth it.

Nostalgic! I used to eat here 37 years ago after football games. We always ordered the chicken fried steak... And for dessert we'd have the strawberry pie. This is the real deal. They make the meringue out of heavy, whipping cream... And big fresh strawberries. Pan made crust. You cannot find this in restaurants anymore because people are too lazy to make it. This place brings back a flood of memories... It looks just the same. I'm not kidding... I don't think they have changed it... But it works fine for me. This is an American café. Highly recommend.

They serve raw pancakes here! Yum Every time I come here I always forget how disgusting it is. The entire place is run down and dirty. The elderly staff act like they hate their lives, but why show that side to the customers?? Anyways, if you're even considering coming here don't, there's a Jim's diner that's less then 10 minutes away and they're honestly everything this place wishes it was.

Horrible horrible horrible. The food was so gross we took one bite and left. The ambience is so depressing and dirty. This place needs a major remodel or even be torn down. The beans were rock hard and had been sitting out all day or even a couple days. My boyfriend and I left so grossed out. I'm so sad to leave a negative review but holy moly RUN!!

What really left a bad taste, though, was the review situation. Some of the glowing reviews feel a little too cozy to be credible. One is from a lady who runs a company the restaurant pays into every year, regularly travels with the owners, and hands them a "best of" award annually. Then a review from the husband. Another review is clearly planted. There was also a negative Google review that was quickly followed by rave reviews from friends.. Convenient timing. If this place is truly as amazing the new reviews state, why the need to rally friends for damage control? And why didn't those people feel inspired to review it before things went south? Something feels off here. The inside-circle energy here is loud and proud.

No. Did I know there was a Castroville-favorite restaurant there as well? Also no. We had to try it. Located inside the Alsatian Golf Club's clubhouse is their 19th-hole restaurant and bar: Julianna's Restaurant. Upon entry, you realize the place has been around for some time. It feels very classic San Antonio, with wooden walls accented by tan and white bricks. The restaurant's aged interior gives it a cozy, lodge-like charm. Though the restaurant was pretty busy on a Saturday night, we were seated instantly at a booth that gave me a perfect view of the Georgia-Alabama game on the bar's TV. After nine or eighteen holes, you never know what you're in the mood for. That's why Julianna's has plenty of options: sandwiches, pizzas, pasta, seafood, steaks, and other meat dishes. Our server came by very quickly and got us our drinks, which for me was a tall Saint Arnold Oktoberfest. I had a tough time deciding between two options: a bone-in pork chop or their creamy Cajun pasta. I opted for the bone-in pork chop with a Caesar salad, bacon green beans, and herb rice. My dad got the creamy Cajun pasta, and my mom got the Southwest chicken. It wasn't long until the Caesar salad came out, with huge croutons and a generous helping of dressing. It was excellent to the point my mom wished she had ordered it over her chicken tortilla soup, which she also enjoyed. If you ever order a meat entrée and they stick a steak knife in it, you're in for an ESPN Instant Classic. The pork chop was huge, topped with a house raspberry chipotle sauce. It was tender and cooked well. I'll admit, trying to find the bone versus the pork was a challenge, but I think that was a me issue. I would order it again. As for the sides, the bacon green beans were sneakily running for Sixth Man of the Year, and the herb rice paired with the pork chop quite well. I would go back. The meal was high quality and felt like a hidden gem even for longtime Castroville residents. What a treat. RIYL: Going to golf courses while being very bad at golf.

We split the fried shrimp platter and the shrimp etouffee (with dirty rice instead of white rice). The food was delicious. We went around 4pm on a weekday, so it was practically empty, but the atmosphere and vibe inside was incredible. I loved the nautical theme. They were playing a lot of rap music which was funny since we saw elderly people eating there who probably thought that was odd. I assume the nighttime vibe is lively and much different. And the restroom was not the cleanest there, even with an empty restaurant. But other than that, I'd recommend everyone go visit and enjoy!

We selected the Mr Crabby boil - pretty standard, 1/2 lb king crab (2 legs) 1/2 snow crab legs (1 set of legs), 1 snow crab claw ( one set claw plus legs), 2 pieces of corn, 4 pieces of sausage, 4 small red potatoes. The crab was cooked fine, the claw meat was a little overcooked but the corn itself was soft / soggy and overcooked. The drinks weren't bad at all, a hurricane and a vodka soda. The server had the crab crackers in their back pocket, not what I would consider clean especially with a $100+ boil that I'm about use them on and the final bill was $180 after tax, before tip. If I would have known l that I'd be paying $100 per person to spilt a boil and one drink each, I would have gone to Smashing Crab, SAT Asian, a Pappadeaux and spent probably a good amount less. Very disappointed given the surprise price point: talk about sticker shock and an average dining experience.
