Sammy's is iconic to Castroville, a family owned restaurant and it's connected to the Haby's Bakery across the street. My very first time here to meet and catch up with some girlfriends. The outside and inside looked very original, yes...a little outdated. But, here, as you browse around, you'll see many of the locals gather to eat and chat. It does get quite busy. Seat yourself anywhere, the restaurant is spacious. Our server was friendly and did check on us frequently. Menu is huge! Think country cooking- burgers, chicken fried steak, salads, breakfast all day, Mexican, you name it. Daily specials- I ordered the meatloaf without gravy and mashed potatoes. I substituted with green beans instead and chose the tomato cucumber salad and harvest beets. It also came with a sweet tea and roll from Haby's bakery. I was very pleased with my meal. The meatloaf was a generous size portion and it was topped with a bit of red sauce and fried onions. The green beans were fresh, not canned. The harvest beets were warm and had a nice glaze. The tomato cucumber salad had a light vinaigrette dressing. I didn't care for the roll, it looked and tasted pretty dry. Overall good. Pay the cashier as you leave the restaurant. We've come twice now to this place and they always have excellent service. It's pretty good, the chicken fried steak was huge and I love the attention to detail. The first time we came was for breakfast and we had the breakfast tacos and pancakes and they were pretty good as well. Food was actually alright, the atmosphere was definitely a little odd feeling. If you didn't live in that town, you were definitely looked at and treated differently. Our waitress was a bit rude to us and didn't seem to care too much about the service she was providing. Inside hasn't been updated from what looks like the 70s and is definitely the place for the older folks. If you like that small town vibe then this is your place, but being an out of towner/city person coming in here you'll definitely feel off. To the folks that work here, put a smile on your face. Ok, so we drove from SA to check this place out and it did not disappoint! My husband loves zucchini fries and this was the only place we could find some, the weren't fries but chips but either way, they were delicious. The breading was perfect and the house ranch was spot on. If you're coming for the atmosphere, this is not the place. It's an old family restaurant but good on the old time feel. Stopped in on our way out from the corn maze. It's obvious this restaurant has been here for a while. It's a diner that has the feel of a house. They have many different options to choose from. I have to say, I am underwhelmed with Sammy's. I understand the draw of a long standing-feels like home-family friendly place, but I feel like with all that going for you, you'd put a little more love in the food too. Neither of my party of three was particularly knocked out of the park with our breakfast plates. Ultimately, the dishes simply lacked flavor. We did ask for a salsa and were given a delicious homemade bowl, however, this didn't make up for the overall lack. A plus though is definitely the friendliness of the staff! This family friendly restaurant is full of cozy home atmosphere. When you walk in, if they know you, they call you by name. They did not know us, and the welcome was just as friendly as if we were long lost friends. The decor caters a bit to the clientele, a bit older, but I felt like I was walking into my Grandma's house. I was able to pick my own seat the day we arrived. The menu is full of all the comfort foods you can imagine starting with the classic chicken fried steak and even a Watergate salad! This was very relaxed. The food was piping hot and ready to be served by amazing staff that were super pleasant and eager to help! Hubby and I grabbed from their special menu. I got the chicken tender special and hubby got the southwest chicken. The Southwest chicken had a creamy cheese sauce with a flavorful kick, but not too overpowering, then it was topped with chopped tomatoes, green peppers and bacon bits. It was very tasty! The side salads were served with mixed greens and tomatoes with homemade ranch dressing and honey mustard. We got sides of mashed potatoes, green beans and fried okra. Super scrumptious and homemade. The food is American and Mexican. You are able to get breakfast food anytime. Their French toast is to die for. I definitely recommend it. I also recommend the fried catfish. My husband liked a smothered spicy chicken dish. They have daily and weekly specials which are reasonably priced. and I tried one of them which was tasty. I didn't care for the Cole slaw or potato salad. The food is home style cooking. Our waitress on the first visit was the best and had been employed there for 23 years. Forgive me, her name was either Velinda or Belinda. She was always on the ball. She made sure our drinks never ran dry and answered our questions about the menu. Nostalgic! I used to eat here 37 years ago after football games. We always ordered the chicken fried steak... And for dessert we'd have the strawberry pie. This is the real deal. They make the meringue out of heavy, whipping cream... And big fresh strawberries. Pan made crust. You cannot find this in restaurants anymore because people are too lazy to make it. Sammy's is the exact type of spot I needed to wake myself up on a cold Fall morning with a hot cup of coffee and a warm homemade plate of breakfast. I was driving through for work and saw Sammy's open around 6:30am. Since it was so early there were less than 5 people eating. All of them looked like locals which made me happy. I ordered a three-egg breakfast plate with pancakes and boy was it a lot of food! It was plenty to get my morning jumpstarted that is for sure. The sausage is super unique, as told to me by my waitress, and tasty too! The decor and booths are dated but I don't know I like the small town charm of it all. There was decorations for Valentine's Day all around the restaurant that made me smile and remind me of family who live in the area (near Hondo). Something about those small touches really make me feel like I am home, safe, and going to be well taken care of and I was! I had fantastic service and a mighty hot coffee that helped me get my day going. If and when I am in the area again I will definitely come back and maybe drop in to see what they offer for lunch specials. read more

Holy Monkey that was Good!!! We decided to stop by to eat after an Awesome session of Goat Yoga and we were pleasantly Surprised! Our waitress Leslie was Awesome and gave some Great Recommendations! This place has fallen into complete disrepair. Selling mediocre food for high dollars. Ceiling tiles over tables are full of mold, torn and damaged. Flooring has holes on linoleum. After a long day of Xmas decorating we wanted a calm peaceful dinner. We traveled to Castroville from San Antonio to check Sammy's out. It was close to 6:30 on a Friday night and it surprisingly calm and quiet although there was quite a few tables full. Place seemed cleaned and the waitress even wiped out ketchup bottle before placing it on the table. Our waitress was extremely attentive and we had everything ww needed at all times. Food was great but not delicious. The menu is inexpensive so definitely worth every cent. They also have a bar off to the side and a large selection of alcohol beverages. FYI there's seasoned french fries are delicious! Enjoy when you stop by and don't forget to tip because you wanted to to get served. read more

My husband and I come here often and we always enjoy ourselves. When I come to a small town diner like this I don't expect trendy updated city decor, Michelin star 5 course meals, or a wine cellar with bottles I can't afford to even look at. This is adorable American local comfort food. Set your expectations there and you won't be disappointed! That said, we stick to plain items like steak and baked potatoes or a burger. I don't go for anything fried or seafood because my palate is a little more particular when it comes to that. Their liter wines are extremely affordable. Finally, their pies are to die for! I ALWAYS get the coconut meringue pie when I come here. I love it and I must have it! It's some of the best I've ever had. Their chocolate and lemon are winners too. Always had good customer service. Decided to head out west for breakfast this morning and since Castroville is about 10 to 12 mins from where I live, I wanted to give this small town diner a try. Upon review on Yelp, I thought the menu was missing pics, however when I arrived, the menu in person wasn't really much. Very limited options in the breakfast selection. Maybe because of Covid, but I was slightly disappointed. I settled for the Goodmorning breakfast and my partner ordered the Belgium waffle breakfast. Nothing really special about either, very predicable meals. Pork chop bland, no seasoning, same for the country fried steak that was ordered on the side as well. Thomas is the best waiter we have ever come across here at Sammy's. Military Brats like him & Nick are awesome. Chicken fried steak is amazing. Love their salad bar. I ordered cajun baked cod, with fried zucchini as a side with a piece of catfish. They brought me what i ordered, plus toast, fruit, and potatoes that i did not order. The cod was stringer- it was severely overcooked. Like it was cooked, frozen, then heated up in the microwave. The restaurant was not very clean. I am giving 3 stars only bc everyone was so nice. My husband and I got the special of the day which was roast beef red potatoes and gravy. I got corn on the cob and Caesar salad my husband got the fried zucchini. We stopped bc the parking lot was full so we figured it must be good. I got coffee, nasty. My husband got tea, was ok. My dinner was not hot and the beef was dry like shoe leather. The potatoes tasted sweet and most were not done and again not even warm. The corn was done but cold and I have no idea what kind of spread was on it but it was nasty and tasted rancid. It was not butter. The salad wasn't even a cup full and the dressing was nasty. The garlic bread also had a butter substitute and nasty nasty nasty. My husband just shook his head. We won't be going back. I do give second chances but I am not sure.
