Amazing mariscos spot, a must try! Alta Mar completely blew me away. We started with their complimentary ceviche and tostadas they bring to the table when you sit down. such a great touch and incredibly fresh. I ordered the tacos gobernador and they were absolutely perfect. The bacon and peppers were a delicious combination, and the shrimp was cooked to perfection, not rubbery at all, just right. Came here with my elderly parents. Good reviews and lots of pics on Yelp. First, the music is loud in this place, we had trouble talking to each other because of this. Our waitress took about five minutes to get to us, even though the place only had one other patron. Greeted us in Spanish, which is ok because my parents speak Spanish too. The courtesy ceviche and chips were sooooo good. It came with a really good salsa we asked for more of. Our Cokes are from a can, no fountain drinks, which means no free refills. No free tortillas with any order, you have to buy them. Food came out fast, it was hot and ready. Portions were generous and everything was deliciously good. Service was good. Seafood fiesta!! This place specializes in it. Seat yourself when you walk in. The menu was huge and overwhelming, so we asked our server for suggestions and most popular dishes. I couldn't decide between the paella or the mojarro especial. She suggested the mojarro and hubby ordered the camarones momias. First of all, they serve complimentary ceviche, green salsa, and saltines/chips. Lemme tell you, I have a very high tolerance for spice heat, and this green salsa is fire lol. Be careful when going for a dip, I literally think it's serranos that has been thrown into a food processor. Spicy, but good when mixed with other food. Camarones momias- large shrimp wrapped in bacon. Delicious! It was accompanied with rice, a slice of garlic bread, and salad. Mojarro especial- our server's fave, this plate had a whole deep fried tilapia, topped with shrimp, pieces of octopus, and diabla sauce. Originally, it came with a mild sauce, but I opted for the medium. I thoroughly enjoyed this dish! If you don't mind using a fork and gettin your fingers dirty, this dish is for you. Highly recommend this seafood restaurant in San Antonio! The fried red snapper with garlic sauce is amazing. I like to get the garlic sauce on the side. The shrimp ceviche tropical is my ultimate favorite here. You get those two dishes and I assure you will be coming back. The beef fajitas was just ok (we found the beef slices to be on the tough side). The cocktail shrimp and octopus were also very good! The service was very warm and friendly. Alta Mar is a very cute comfortable place and the service is great. However, the food is not. Three of us came for lunch having expectations of a great meal based on their ratings. Two of us had the bacon wrapped shrimp with rice and salad and the other a seafood pasta with an Alfredo sauce. The bacon wrapped shrimp was cooked to death! This is an easy shrimp dish for any cook. I have no idea how they could ruin something so simple. The white rice was fine but then again it's white rice. The seafood pasta with was bad and my friend couldn't even eat half of it. I'm sorry for the poor review but this place deserves it. It is a seafood stuffed pineapple topped with cheese in a coconut milk like sauce super delish! For smaller appetites I recommend the shrimp tacos under $10 no fries, or rice but slices of avocado still make it filling. Horchata is delicious without being overly sweet or heavy. I ordered the Huachinago Al Gusto (whole-fried red snapper), and my partner, Caldo 7 Mares (mixed seafood soup). They did not disappoint! I was amazed at the portion sizes--they're very generous. The Hauchinago Al Gusto included a ton of fries, a scoop of rice, steamed veggies, a slice of seasoned French bread, and the Diabla Sauce (perfect for dipping fries). Wow! Wow! Wow! My son and I have been looking for something new and amazing to try. Boy, did we hit the jackpot today! Alta Mar was a wonderful place for us to have our introduction to Mexican styled seafood- Mariscos! I had some experience with ceviche before, but I was not prepared for this menu full of all kinds of tantalizing fresh seafood concoctions. Don't expect to go there for a fried shrimp basket, cajun boil, or fisherman's combo platter. It is not your coleslaw and tartar sauce kind of place. It is a whole new kind of seafood cuisine that stands alone on its own merits. When you walk into the restaurant, you are welcomed with the upbeat sounds of Mexican music. It was at the perfect volume and created a true party atmosphere. Our server welcomed us to the restaurant with a complimentary bowl of ceviche, chalupa shells, crackers, and salsa. She took our drink orders. We both ordered a Modelo Especial. Then she left us to peruse the menu and attack the ceviche which was fresh and refreshing at the same time. My son went there with red snapper on his mind, so he ordered the plate that came with a whole snapper, white rice, french fries, and a vegetable mix. I had thought about that, also. The appeal of a whole fish was very tempting, but the sides just didn't speak to me. My son didn't even touch them. He just devoured both sides of the fish and boxed the leftover sides to take home and probably make another meal out of. I opted for the paella. New paragraph whether it is correct or not. Why? Because that paella deserves it. First of all, let me ask you something. Have you ever eaten Hamburger Helper? If you have, you can picture the amount that one box makes once you get it all boiled up and add that pound of ground beef. It's a lot of food right? My mom fed the whole family with one box of that stuff. Well, they served me an amount of paella that was at least 1.5X as much as a batch of Hamburger Helper. It could have easily fed a family of four. There were about twenty smaller peeled shrimp (I would say 30 count), three jumbo shrimp in the shell, a huge crab leg, and about two cups of chopped octopus mixed into a deliciously seasoned pile of about 4 cups of rice. That platter was ginormous! I could only eat about a third of it. The rest came home in a box. The shellfish was all so fresh and tasty. As you chewed a mouthful, you could easily distinguish which of the seafoods you were eating. I'm going to dream about that stuff. We also ordered the green ceviche. They brought a huge plate of it. To describe it to you in all its brilliance, let me tell you how I would try to duplicate it at home. First, I would make a big batch of guacamole. I would mix in a bunch of paper thin slices of red onion. Then I would add a bunch of chopped raw shrimp. Then I would squeeze a lime or two into it and mix it again. The flavors absolutely exploded on my tongue with each mouthful. I have to go back! There were so many other awesome things on that menu. Went in today to try this place. Complimentary appetizer was good but tostadas that went with it were cold and very hard. Fish tacos were good with lettuce, fish strips, and avocado on a lackluster corn tortilla. Orange sauce was sweet and good but would have preferred salsas. Fish burger came with fries and was OK as well. Waitressing was horrible as they tossed us our plates at different times, they took forever to refill our tea, and they didn't explain how to pay. They have live mariachis, 6-8 that play for a fee. Yes, this is the place to be on Friday, it's hot! Nothing fancy, small establishment, however this place was popping. Next, the welcome platter which I'm not sure what it was a mix of cucumber, purple onion and something else that I can't place my flavors on. Never the less fresh tostadas as well and hot sauce. Make sure to not over eat with the welcome platter. Then we decided to order guacamole, lord, this guacamole was chunky & the guacamole danced on my tongue. The Food was great, they start you with some good ceviche and chips! I would say everyone should try the tacos gobernador from here they were delicious. We also got the fajitas beef/ chicken mix with peppers and side of white rice it was very good and filling!
