Smashin Crab has hosted so many of our family celebrations at this point that it's basically part of the guest list. Birthdays, random cravings, "we survived the week" dinners & you name it, we've probably celebrated it here. The vibe is casual, fun, and laid-back, which is exactly what you want when you're about to put on a bib and commit to a seafood boil. And yes, that is exactly what you should do here because the boils never miss. The seafood is always fresh, the sauces are flavorful, and the spice levels are not playing around. My recommendation? Stick with level 2 unless you enjoy sweating through your meal and reevaluating your life choices. My go-to combo is mussels, shrimp, crab legs, potatoes, boiled egg, and veggies. And before anybody gets suspicious about the veggies in a seafood boil, hear me out, they absolutely belong there. They soak up all that buttery, spicy sauce and add something extra to the whole experience. Don't skip them. Also, get the flights. They're fun, they're good, and they make an already good time even better. We stopped by on a Friday during happy hour, which runs from 3-6 PM, and overall had a great experience! Jenn was our server, and she was amazing very attentive, informative, and provided great service throughout our visit. The ambiance was a fun, lively vibe with music playing, and the restaurant was clean. The happy hour menu had a great selection, with everything from shrimp boils to cocktails. We started with the 1/2 dozen chargrilled oysters ($19.12) and the Smash'd Margarita Flight ($11 during happy hour). Chargrilled Oysters: 8.5/10 The oysters were cooked in garlic butter and Parmesan and served with crispy toast. The toast was definitely a highlight for me it added such a good texture and paired really well with the oysters. I would absolutely order these again! Smash'd Margarita Flight: (9/10) This was a fun way to get a taste of the different margaritas they offer. The prickly pear was my favorite of the flight! Shrimp Boil: (10/10) For our main meal, we ordered the shrimp boil from the happy hour menu and added a few extras. I loved how customizable the boils were. They have a great variety of add-ons, from broccoli to ramen noodles, and you can also choose your seasoning and spice level. Overall, we had a great experience. Good food, a fun atmosphere, plenty of options, and great service from Jenn. We'll definitely be back and those chargrilled oysters will be making another appearance at the table! -Shrimp was extremely over done as if were reheated set aside and heated a third time which made hard to peal and enjoy -Crablegs ware also over done which made hard to crack said shell it was extremely difficult to get the meat out of them. Several had been so boiled there was no meat left in the shell at all. -Personally I have never seen broccoli in a crab boil at all. But the broccoli was awful. My husband got the oysters that were flavorful but again extremely overcooked We were charged EXTRA for melted butter for the crab legs... WTAF! I need to start with Jaden! What a fantastic waiter! He was very informative and made our experience very enjoyable! We ordered the Boudin balls and they did not disappoint. I had the salmon with rice and mixed vegetables. The salmon was great, but the vegetables were very mushy. Jaden suggested a sauce that he uses, and it was spicy, but so good! This is my go-to place for Cajun food in San Antonio. Their calamari appetizer is delicious with nice chunks lightly fried. The dipping sauce is a cocktail sauce with a nice hit of horseradish. My favorite dish is the crawfish etouffee. You can pick a spice level of 0 to 6. I chose 3 which is habanero peppers. A little too spicy for me. Service was good with other workers fill up drinks and delivering food. Too go containers were solid with a separate bag for each person. Ambiance was like a diner, with plenty of seating. We celebrated my little cousins 18th bday here. First time visit. Ate at the location on Bandera Rd. Our server was amazing. On the ball. I appreciate that they have lunch specials from 11am-3pm Monday to Friday with things like wings, po-boys and pastas. My son did a pasta and really enjoyed it - shrimp, chicken and some fish and a nice and creamy white sauce. My daughter and I shared a boil bag with Shrimp, Crab clusters and corn, broccoli, red potatoes and andouille sausage. We got the mixed seasoning on it and I can say I was not a real fan of it but the proteins were cooked great! They had a good flow coming through so they do pretty well. I'm a huge fan of the flavor at SA SEAFOOD so I guess I missed more seasoning but overall a good 7.5/10. read more

Smashin Crab is our go-to spot when craving seafood. I love their boil bags, they have fresh seafood with a right amount of spice. They can get busy but I've never had a problem with their service. I was looking for a place to eat without having to travel very far. Since this place was down the road I decided to give them a try. I was able place my order through their website. Upon arriving, I was impressed by the set up, particularly the bar area. They had quite a few beers on tap. I approached the counter to pick up my order. For this visit, I selected the shrimp po'boy, which came with fries. I also got a side of hush puppies. The sandwich was a decent size but the amount of shrimp was lacking in my opinion. I really enjoyed the hush puppies and fries. Both had great flavor and were crispy. I will likely check out this place again as they had a variety of items that seem worth trying. My first seafood boil and it did not disappoint! We spent just over $100 for this jalapeño seafood boil with lobster. The heat was there but not much seasoning. I was wanting at least some salt. It wasn't bad and we did well, just the two of us. I enjoyed the experience and the atmosphere here. Great music and great service! read more

As someone who works in the service industry, I understand that not every shift is perfect. However, this restaurant wasn't busy, so I was disappointed by how rushed we felt from start to finish. We were rushed to order, rushed to bag our food, and even asked to remove our forks from our bowls immediately after receiving our checks. Our waitress only refilled our waters once, spilled water all over the table, and even dropped a crab claw we had paid extra for without acknowledging it before bagging our food. The food itself also wasn't worth the price. Everything was overcooked, under-seasoned, and the shrimp had an excessive amount of waste throughout them. Overall, the service made us feel like we were being rushed out the door instead of welcomed, and unfortunately the food didn't make up for it. Everything was amazing as always this is my 2nd time eating at the restaurant but the only thing that bothered me was the corn & sausage it tasted the same & i didn't have a good experience last time it tasted like it's old & especially the sausage i never had bad experience with them before in any seafood boil restaurant except this one hopefully it can be change because i really love corn & sausage. We came to Smashin Crab because my grandfather says this is his favorite place and we see why. Coming from California, the service at Smashin Crab is exemplary. Not to say we don't receive good service in California but Vince here went above and beyond. He was patient and kind with our orders, gave us the best recommendations and checked up on us throughout the meal in a way that wasn't overbearing. He was maintaining our table while also handling what looks to be about 7 more families and tables while still being level headed. The food here is flavorful, filling, and Vince's recommendation on the Trinity sauce was exactly what we were looking for. It was also a nice touch that the manager, Ro, came and checked in on every table to make sure we were doing okay. We hope to come here again soon and that it stays the same experience we had this time. read more

Service is great, Jilly very friendly and informative. I ordered the shrimp po boy and crawfish fries, they were out of fries, so I opt for the onion rings. My hubby ordered the catfish and dirty rice, they were out of the dirty rice. But by the time our food arrived the fries and dirty rice was in the building. The manager gave me a little extra and apologized for the wait. Definitely would comeback for the service alone. The place is very clean and welcoming. read more

First off the hospitality was awesome. The staff made valiant efforts to ensure we were happy. We were invited by friends who raved about a Smashin Crab near their home in Bourne. My hubby and I ordered redfish and mixed veggies for sides. I specifically ordered mine grilled because I wanted to ensure it didn't come out blackened. After my order arrived it appeared blackened and after a discussion with the waitress and the manager they remade my meal. In the meantime I ate my red beans and rice because it was on the verge of being cold. It was the best part of my meal. Would have been better if it was hot. When my new order of redfish came, it had NO SEASONING at all. I discussed having allergies with the manager so I'm guessing this was their way of ensuring there would be no ER visits on their watch. I used the lemon to get some flavor and it was ok. Others had grilled oysters (which they loved), salmon, Seafood pasta and chicken tenders. All of us that ordered veggies with our meal noticed that most of our veggies consisted of red and green bell peppers. I was expecting more of the cauliflower, broccoli and carrots combination instead. Let's talk about the crab cakes shall we? In my opinion crab cakes should never be battered and fried. It usually spells trouble and is a clear sign they were likely frozen. My friend ordered them as an appetizer and when they arrived I suspected they wouldn't be good. She immediately contacted the waitress after tasting them. They were not what she expected to put it mildly. For dessert, a few of us had beignet fries with powdered sugar and syrup and they all agreed they were good. If I ever visit Smashin Crab again I'll have steamed crabs. I saw a few customers with the steamed bags and they really seemed to enjoy them. My food made me feel like I was being forced to watch my sodium intake. It would have been tolerable if I had salt and pepper and there was none to be found on any tables. We had enough wrong and I just didn't want to bother the waitress again with more changes. We absolutely enjoy this place. We've been many times. With the price points it's not a place we go to all the time, it's our special occasion place. Sadly, they changed the menu and took off all the things my husband was waiting to enjoy for his birthday. The biggest disappointment for him and the whole family was the Big Easy platter. Everyone was looking forward to it, and they don't have it anymore and won't make it anymore. The items on the menu that were in it, are no longer on there to order individually. Then the boil platter he would get was gone. I'm sorry building your own just isn't the same as what he used to get. The King Crab was super high at over $100 a pound yesterday, I venture to guess since it was in his old boil platter they took it off the menu. All of the new boil platters are lower price points. He also noticed they all have vegetables and he says he doesn't need those fillers...he went for crab. Again, service was great, food was great, just overall we were disappointed with some of the menu changes this time. We hope at a minimum they bring back The Big Easy. read more

Got a sitter and went for date night. Drove 10 minutes farther because this had better reviews than the closer location. Wasn't super busy there were several open tables when we arrived. Our server was the bartender he was amazing stayed on top of our drinks as well as making drinks for the whole restaurant by himself and running them to tables. Our food however I wish I could tell you how it was we waited for 2 hours with only the chicharrons as an appetizer I saw 2 managers in the building not once came by to check on us or let us know what was going on with our food. Again our server the bartender was rushing everywhere getting his job done and going to the window to ask about our food I'm assuming the other servers kept taking our orders for their tables. The dining room was emptying out and still no food and multiple servers just standing around doing nothing in the corner. One manager even went outside I could see him in the window made a phone call and I guess left because I never saw home again. After 2 hours and our sitter wondering where we were we paid for our drinks and left again no manager came by to apologize or offer to fix anything but conviently told our server as we were paying to leave that our food was ready. We went down the road to Torchy's and got an appetizer dinner and drinks in less than 40 minutes and for the same price as the margarita flight and 2 drinks we had while waiting 2 hours for our food. We should've just gone there from the get im so disappointed we will never go back and will let everyone know to avoid this place at all costs unless you're just gonna sit at the bar for drinks that bartender was amazing! Shame on management truly some of the worst "leadership" I've ever seen. I cannot speak highly enough about the BAYOU BREAD. It is crawfish étouffée & cheeses char-grilled on buttery garlic bread. It's a little bit spicy, full of seasoning, succulent crawfish, and melty cheese galore. It's a giant portion and very rich in flavor. I could only eat half of it even, and took the rest home for dinner (it was also super good served cold, later on). The French fries are perfectly fried Cajun style, and quite addictive. My mom got the shrimp po'boy and loved it! The batter on the shrimp was crisp and flavorful, the bread was soft but crispy on the outside, and the remoulade sauce she ordered on the side gave it a delicious authentic taste. Can't wait to go back and order it again. Lexi was our server and she was so friendly, funny, helpful, and attentive. Great food, great service. Clean atmosphere with lots of New Orleans character. The staff is very friendly and personable I like the flavor of the sauce that includes all the spices combined. The spice level was perfect, Izzie described the mild flavor as the heat level of a jalapeño and it was spot on. It was the perfect amount of spice without having my eyes and nose running like faucets. The fried combo platted was good. We chose the jumbalya bites, fried pickles and calamari. The food came out promptly and hot. We chose a seafood platter and opted for headless shrimp for an additional cost. It was definitely worth it because the the shrimp was not only served without the head but also the shell, which was pleasantly surprising. The only reason for four stars is the crab. There were several legs that were pretty hollow inside, which was pretty disappointing. Overall, we had a great excited and I would return in the future. read more

Hostess are not very attentive. Food is not that good. I put name on list but they kept seating people who just walked in. I had the charbroiled oysters they had no flavor and they were chewy, it felt like I was chewing on a thick balloon. Received service at the Bandera location. Two of my family members, my husband and nephew, fell ill after eating the boudin ball appetizer roughly around 1330 today. There were six family members in my party...and my husband and nephew were the only ones to eat this appetizer. Symptoms included upset stomach, nausea and diarrhea. Nausea persisted after their bowel movements. Thankfully, they shared this information with me as I am a nurse and understand what foodborne illness looks like having also experienced it myself. I proceeded to make this establishment aware of my two family members being sick after carefully evaluating signs and symptoms and coming up with this conclusion around 2030 today as I understand and respect the restaurant business and this was my favorite restaurant. I kindly asked to speak to a manager by phone to make them aware of this situation...in hopes to check their food and pull this item off the menu temporarily. I spoke with the manager of this location, Mr. Craig, and shared my concerns. He told me "...well food poisoning symptoms don't normally show up until 24 hours later". I was shocked and responded angrily "...well unless you are a medical professional, I would not go there Mr. Craig. I am a registered nurse..." The absolute audacity. There was dead space over the phone. And Mr. Craig then stated "I apologize that they are going through that. I hope they feel better". As to prevent this review. How disappointing. read more

Bfs birthday so we decided on Smashing and WS so we can watch the game in the comfort of our living room. The girl that took my Order was very friendly while taking my Order and when I picked it up. I'm Sad to say this is order was def not up to par lk the rest. However, a our corn and shrimp was overcooked and mushy. When we let the manager know, she offered to replace our shrimp. We left with an open bag of shrimp, but got home to find it all still mushy. Thought it was odd that there was broccoli in the boil but it was actually pretty good. Probably the spiciest item in the bag because it really soaked in all the juices and seasoning. Catfish was huge, come with fries, coleslaw and/or hush puppies were extra. Ran out of coleslaw while we were there so can't comment on that but hush puppies had jalapeno in them. Although i enjoyed my meal i didnt like the combinations to order food and the combo's included things i didnt want nor care for but when looking at price it make things extremely complicated to eat a decent seafood cajun boil under a $100. Then there was a charge for potatoes and corn etc etc I ordered some potatoes and got some that were about 1inch in diameter..... My counterpart ordered without looking at price and spent over $150 for one person. Additionally, the waitress seemed to push to get our order in, so we had drinks, appetizers and main course all on the table at the same time.... Then we realized it was the end if her shift. Bathrooms were clean... staff was generally helpful but after our waitress departed we asked for another drink and the waitress informed us that our waitress shift ended and she was gone.... We waited over 10 minutes for a drink in a restaurant only 25% full so we ended up going to the bar to get our own drink. The food was good, environment was good, most staff was good but definitely did not feel any love for a $300 ticket for two people..... just very weird and i dont think i will return. The food is absolutely fantastic. Being new to this seafood restaurant. I opted for a seafood boil of my choosing, snow crab, crawdads, shrimp potato and corn on the cob. All prepared just right. Tender and delicious. BUT the one item that impressed me the most was the seafood gumbo. Absolutely amazing !! For my taste, on a scale of 1to 10. I give this a 20!! I will definitely be back .
