We are regular customers here. We come twice a week and have for over a year. Or should I say we were regular customers here. This morning we stopped in as we always do on Saturdays. I got the buffet and to my shock I found 3 flies in the beans after I'd sat down. Not small gnats but standard house flies. I brought it to Attention of the server and he of course apologized. Wife got a breakfast off the menu but by this time she'd eaten half of it and I sent mine back without a re-order as I was pretty much grossed out. Wife didn't want to finish her meal and was pretty much grossed out as well. While we sat there, I watched to see if the servers would pull the refried beans off the food line and replace it but sadly, nope. I figured since we are loyal/regular customers they would have at least offered to comp my wife's meal since she didn't eat it all but nope. You should treasure your customers. Even if they'd offer a comp meal I wouldn't have accepted it. The fact that they didn't tells me they need a lot of work on their customer satisfaction. Was fun while it lasted. read more

The service was excellent, and the food was delicious, especially the country fried steak and potatoes. My son also gave the Nutella crepes two thumbs up! Walking up to Sammy's feels like stepping back in time. Greeted at the front door by a life-sized Big Boy statue (see my pic), you immediately get the sense that this place is a true throwback to old-school Americana. Inside, the vibe is that of a traditional, straight-up diner--no frills, just comfort. Sammy's delivers exactly what you'd expect: honest, unpretentious food in a casual, welcoming setting. The menu is impressively large--there's something for everyone, whether you're in the mood for breakfast, burgers, or classic sandwiches. I've included a few pics of the menu pages, but there's a lot more where that came from. I went with breakfast: three eggs, hash browns, and sausage patties (see my pic). The food came out quickly, and everything was hot and well-prepared. The eggs were cooked just right, the hash browns had that golden crisp, and the sausage was hearty and flavorful--nothing fancy, just good, solid diner food. My wife opted for lunch and ordered a half Cobb salad, which you can also see in my pic. The ingredients were crisp, and the salad was exactly what she wanted--simple, tasty, and satisfying. We come here and this was the first Saturday 8/1 @ 10:30 we had horrible service.We sat for over 10 minutes when I flagged the hostess if anyone was working our table as the waitress (young short with long ponytail Hispanic like us) was advised of us and she then got upset and told someone else to take our table after she walked by and ignored us. First time my husband and I walked out. And the worse was they never offered a coffee refill but charged us $7.95 when leaving!!!! So had hope for them and now will go somewhere else. What a great find along the way to and from Palm Springs off I-10. I love old style American diners, and this new restaurant captures the fun with bright decor and lots of booths. We sat by the windows in the atrium section. The menu is huge as are the servings so we had a hard time choosing with so many favorites offered. My husband I congratulated ourselves for our choices. My egg sandwich with cheese was perfectly grilled and served with perfect hash browns. His turkey sandwich was made with real roasted turkey and nicely grilled on the same delicious bread as mine. Definitely recommend this place! We've been here a couple of times and the customer service is always on point. The restaurant is super clean, which I really appreciate. I'm usually a little skeptical about spots that use the same setup from back in the day, but here you can tell they keep everything fresh and well-maintained. The food is good, and I really like that they offer a buffet on the weekends. This place definitely deserves 5 stars! We had a fantastic visit to Sammy's Café today! I ordered the steak and eggs, which came with sourdough bread and a side of fresh, hot homemade salsa--absolutely delicious. My wife went for the chicken pot pie with a salad, and she loved how fresh and homemade it tasted. For the kids, we got a mac and cheese with fruit for my son, a cheeseburger with fries for one daughter, and spaghetti with fries for the other daughter. All of those were kids' meals and pretty cost-effective, which we appreciated. I also noticed that the menu had a really nice variety of different foods and a great senior citizen selection, which is a lovely touch. Overall, it was a wonderful meal for the whole family, and we'll definitely be back! read more

I like to order the senior chicken breast as it is one of few healthy options. It reads juicy chicken breast on menu. It is far from juicy. Too thin and always overcooked and very dry. So much it's almost impossible to cut with a regular knife. Please teach your cook how to properly prepare a 'juicy' chicken breast! read more

Today's is Mother's Day and my husband took me here to eat. Sorry to say the food was not edible I order crepes and they were the worst i have ever seen to be serve. A few weeks ago, I drove by and saw a sign that heralded a return of a restaurant to the space formerly housing a Bob's Big Boy. I was surprised to see the Big Boy statue still in the parking. (I was even more surprised that it was unscathed, not tagged up or vandalized!) I stopped today for a late lunch. I had read about people complaining about service. I did not encounter that at all. I was greeted right away and led to a booth. She came back shortly to ask if I would be more comfortable at a different table. I very much appreciated that offer. She checked on me frequently, but not obtrusively. There were maybe 10 tables, when I came in, which is a good sign for a late afternoon lunch. The menu is enormous. There is a mix of typical American diner food, like meatloaf, sandwiches, salads, but there are also multiple Mexican offerings. I asked for an iced tea. I got my tea, plus a basket of freshly-made tortilla chips and a small bowl of a watery salsa. The salsa wasn't as chunky as I like, but it had a good savory flavor, not hot. I opted for a combination with a tamal and a chile relleno. I was brought an enormous plate with an enormous tamal. Sadly, the tamal was mostly masa, with a little bit of dry shredded pork. I liked the sauce that was served over the tamal, but it didn't add much moisture, so I used the leftover table salsa. The chile relleno was much better. It had a large amount of Monterey jack cheese and a fluffy egg exterior. A ranchero sauce covered it. The rice was super moist, but didn't have much flavor. I liked the refried beans, but they could have used just a touch more salt and a little more fat, preferably lard or bacon grease. I left satisfied. I want to try some of the diner food. Much of the interior decorations and seating is original to the Bob's franchise. read more

Im a bit of a sucker for small town diners. This place was something I stumbled upon when I first moved to Calimesa and I have to say this place did not disappoint. The pot roast the turkey sandwich all of the Mexican breakfast are so good if you want food that taste like mommas cooking. The service is always so friendly and the waiters and host is always so personable. I have eaten inside and door dashes and both have never disappointed me. So I have been wanting to try this place since it opened last month. I have been to the other Sammy's and they were great places. This place isn't like the others.. The parking lot was full so it must be great.. When you walk in - it's like a pop up restaurant as they just covered the walls quickly to try to give a new identity, but left all the Bobs Big Boy art on the wall.. (Was a former Bobs Big Boy Restaurant) The food looked good on the menu. The wait to order was a bit of a wait. Once we ordered it took almost 45 minutes to the food to arrive.. The food was ok (4 out of 10) being generous.. The server didn't come back except to slide the check on the table.. People were chasing servers to get more coffee.. I rarely ever give low ratings, but this experience... I won't be back.. You were warned.. lol read more

My meal today is why I don't come to this Sammy's location very often. The last time I was here, everything was delicious and perfectly cooked. This morning, my cinnamon roll French Toast came out burnt. My server was happy to have it re-made but sending out overcooked food is unacceptable. I have had the same meal twice at the Sammy's Upland location and it has been perfect. I am always pleased and a little surprised when I diner here. Simple items like a BLT are so good, and the fruit cup is so ripe, packed with ripe melons, grapes, and strawberries . They have an extensive Mexican menu in addition to typical American diner selections. I am so surprised at the absolutely delicious enchiladas suites. It is difficult not order the enchiladas every time. Other typical diner dishes here are good, but Mexican and sandwiches shine! read more

Four of us went there for breakfast on our way to play golf. We were not disappointed. First the hospitality and ambiance was terrific. The food was served all at the same time and was perfectly cooked to order and nice and warm. Even the pancake syrup was warm. The location is super convenient being right off the freeway and only a few minutes from the golf course. I'm hoping this was just a soft opening...the inside is just like the Bobs Big Boy with a Sammy's banner, a bit disappointing. Looks like there was or is going to be a salad bar but it's empty (I can't remember if Bob's had a salad bar or not). Menus were filthy, got my food but no fork, had to ask 3 times for it. Server we had did not know the menu, she seemed a bit nervous but she was very nice. Chicken Fried Steak was very good and the omelette was just an omelette, nothing special. I will probably wait a few months before going back, giving them a chance to finish renovating. Have to say employees were full of smiles and again very nice read more

It wasn't too busy; there were about 8+ booths still open. A lot of the decor is still Bob's big boy. We got seated in a few minutes and asked for water. The water was terrible. Tasted like sink water. I asked for a soda and it came 10 min later and had no carbonation whatsoever. I asked for a new one. I was brought a new one and it had some carbonation with no flavor. How can someone mess up a soda order!!? I decided just to deal with it as 2/3 waitresses seemed stressed running around. Food was barely warm and the flavor was less than the average diner type. The only plus was that the portion sizes were pretty good. It seems that they opened before they are ready. I mean if it's a new restaurant; at least change the old restaurants decor before opening. Maybe we will try again in a year or so when they are established and work out all the kinks. read more
