I've been to same same soooooo many times but idk if I'll go back again after last night. Idk what happened to the dudes who wore glasses but yall need to bring them back! Last nights bartender (young brunette) was so disappointing. I stood in the corner of the bar for 30 minutes before she took my drink order! She made eye contact with me three times and told me after standing for 20 minutes that the guys who just showed up next to me were next....huh??? This is an exceptional restaurant ‼ Very different from your average place. The Chef is so creative and staff wonderful. Chase our waiter was great‼Attentive but not hovering, knowledgeable and kind. The Korean Short Ribs delicious, Cucumber Salad refreshing, Chicken Kabbobs w/peanut sauce addictive, Potatoes w/sour sauce so good, Curry yummy, etc...my friend loves the drinks there as they are very different. We got the chicken wings, short rib starter, chicken sandwich, and the special of filet with chimichuri sauce; it all had the perfect spice. Everything was so freaking good. It's a cute little spot, but the bartender's don't know what they're doing. Occasionally quite rude and not knowledgeable on common drink orders. To add to that, I watched them turn away a guy who was clearly over 21. Had all three bartenders look at his ID, and they all turned him away. I took a look at it (I was a bartender through college and worked in the service industry ten years) and it was as real as it gets. Had the watermarks and felt correct. When the guy left the one bartender leaned over to me and said "I just didn't like his joke." You're gonna turn away a guy and embarrass him just cause you didn't like his joke? Where do I start? We're looking for something new in different in Carlsbad and we found this nice little hidden gem! I can't tell you how delicious everything was. Everything we ordered was A++!! The Korean short ribs were my absolute fave, although everything else was comparable. We had the chicken curry, lettuce, wraps, Tom kha soup and marinated cucumbers! Everything was cooked perfectly and also flavorful! Our server Lenny was exceptional! We went on a Wednesday night and it was not very crowded. They cover Jesus with dinosaurs to Elvira and are able to tie it all together. The dark walls with gold accents and plants made it feel like some cute spots we love in downtown San Diego. The drinks are clever and well put together, we tried 5 on the menu. We enjoyed all our cocktails, the burnt ends were crispy and tender, the panang curry was top notch. I loved their fries but not everyone at the table agreed which I attribute to personal preference. They're thinner cut but not shoestring, I'd say they're closest to in-n-out style which I love. They're not on the menu anywhere but we saw them in a picture so we asked the waitress for them as a side which she happily accommodated. They were out of a few items when we got there a little before 8pm on a Friday night, including the chicken wings. This might be our poor observation skills, but it wasn't clear to the 4 of us that they had first-come/open seating. I think we were extra thrown off because a table we could see from the door had a "reserved" sign on it. One waitress told us we could sit at a table as soon as they bussed it, but once we sat down another waitress told us we can't stay at that table since it's reserved for someone else. She was able to flag down the other gal and sort it out so no worries, but a little bit of crossed wires. And in the best way because when best friends team up to take decades of industry experience and open something of their own you know it's gonna be done right. It's not some big rich restaurateur trying to change the landscape it's 3 local guys making the neighborhood better. While State street expands and quality neighborhood bars vanish, Same Same provides something different than the dilapidated nearby bars out of touch and living on former glory. It's still got the bones of Clara, but a much needed decor update inspired by travels to Thailand. The pink lighting is surprisingly unstripclub like. Think neon vibes, but classy. They are working on solidifying their final menu's and run vendors initially, so check social for the ever rotating offerings. Come for the drinks and ambiance, but stay for the secret desserts. You'll find classics brought with them from former bars along with new inventive ever changing menu. A solid back bar selection lends itself to the fun dice roll game to pick your brown bag random drink. Think Compass mystery wine offerings promotion, but for spirits. Fresh espresso for their espresso martini is a nice touch despite improvements to recipes made with just coffee liqueur, fresh is best. I can't wait to see their final vision come to life as they hit their stride and you shouldn't hesitate to check them out. Really rooting for this place. For Carlsbad, this had probably the most flavorful food I've had outside of Campfire. God knows the city needs a healthy dose of spices, and then some. Felt cautious about Thai & Korean inspired food, but some of the items here have potential. The standout was definitely the wonton samosa. Very well spiced massaman, enough sweet to balance it out, and a kick of actual heat that lingers a bit. Crisp shell contrasts the soft potato based filling. Korean shortrib leaned toward a savory, grilled flavor that came off as salty-bitter. I'm not sure ours had the Thai chimichurri that I saw on some other pics, and it wasn't quite the sweeter interpretation of gochujang I'm used to with most Korean restaurants I've visited. I think some sweet would've been a good complement to the flavors there. Khao soi was disappointingly one dimensional, lacking in salt and too heavy on lemongrass. Noodles were fine. Short rib was worth the extra charge, a nice serving of relatively tender cubes. Since the curry base was bland, this was more of a textural experience. Gochujang chicken sandwich was alright. The chicken was generous in portion, tender, and the superior meat that is thigh. I found the combo or proportions of sauces to be too acidic between the gochujang sauce, mezcal aoili, and then the grated & pickled green papaya on top. I really dig the concept, but I think more milk fat and less acid would've made it better. The brioche bun reminded me of cafeteria bread, lacking that chew and shiny golden crust on top. For some reason we got lucky and got to try an off-menu marinated flap steak with Thai chimichurri. Aside from the samosas, these were the highlight. Steak was tender, still a bit rare, good flavor with the marinade and sour-spicy-sweet of the chimichurri. Compliments to the chef on this assumed ode to tiger cry steak, and thanks to the waiter for sharing this one. The ambiance is pretty sweet in my opinion, kinda a dreamy chill. The bathrooms smelled like cinnamon and there's a projection of greenery or something on the wall in the back. Despite how the pictures look, the lighting is not too dim, but also not too bright. No complaints with service, got our orders and drinks in pretty fast. Chill staff. The drinks are apparently created by the same guy, Corey, who was behind Misadventure & Co.'s menu. Family did takeout from Same Same in early Nov after visiting Legoland's Christmas event, both wife and I got the curry togo among other appetizers. After consuming my curry an hour later at home, I fell sick. I could not stop vomiting and coming out the other end and had to visit local ER at 4am to be rehydrated and maintain water in my stomach before my body could absorb it. My wife was fine the first night. The next day she finished her leftover curry and within an hour had diarrhea as well. With the number of solid reviews I think it may be a one time fluke with sick staff in the kitchen or something else. read more
