Unfortunately the service at this restaurant took away from Sambal's positive qualities (the view of the Hudson River was wonderful). My friend and I had multiple things wrong with our drinks after being very clear with the waitstaff (over 3 times). During our meal, we noticed that both tables next to us also complained about either a drink/food item being prepared wrong (the items needed to be returned to the kitchen), or complaining about the slow service. The servers seem young, inexperienced, and unprofessional. One blonde waitress, in particular, seemed to have an attitude with customers who expressed any sort of dissatisfaction. It almost appeared as if she was doing patrons a 'favor' by even being there at all. In my experience, what makes a restaurant great is not being 100% flawless, or never making a mistake. A great restaurant can be seen in HOW mistakes or customer complaints are handled. If they are received with a sincere apology and a quick and positive solution, then the customer will hardly remember the error that took place. The food and views at Sambal were good; however, management may want to consider training their staff better. Service is always what separates a mediocre restaurant from a superior one. read more

Fantastic new alternative cuisine. The atmosphere is divine, especially watching the sunset from the rooftop deck. Friendly but slightly clumsy staff. Food served very quickly and portion sizing perfect. Placemats or paper tablecloth would be great for the rooftop tables. Tried all the Malaysian dishes and they were nice and yummy, very similar to Thai but slightly different ingredients. Feel free to go for the spiciest dishes because they are not spicy at all. Good place with authentic cuisine. The setting is mostly the same as what it was with the previous Indian restaurant - the big addition is the outdoor deck! The deck overlooks a bit of the parking lot and lot of the Hudson River - it's gorgeous during sunset. Menu options aren't super varied but does over the basics of Thai/Malaysian fare. I didn't even want to waste any time thinking about this horrendous dining experience, but I feel that I will be doing the public a disservice if I don't give this warning: STAY AWAY. Besides the beautiful views & cool building, everything else was terrible. Waiting over 40 minutes for undrinkable, overpriced , horribly crafted cocktails, a meal that truly was nothing to write home about and top it off with a filthy bathroom with a clogged, crap covered toilet..... needless to say, we won't be back.... How is this FABULOUS place right in my town and this is the first time I have eaten here! I sampled a dish recently that a friend had and it was good. I decided to order tonight and struck gold with the Satay Chicken and Basil Fried Rice. Both were so good! Got everything to go and it was hot, utensils and everything you needed to enjoy was in the bag. I cant wait for warm weather when I can go back and sit outside and enjoy this stunning view of the Hudson and enjoy my food on the outside deck. I went with two friends for dinner this past Friday night. I ordered a mango salad (that I order elsewhere, so I know the dish.) My friends ordered soup and chicken wings. We were each underwhelmed with what we got. The place is beautiful - lovely patio for warmer weather and nicely appointed inside. I absolutely enjoyed this restaurant. Even though we didn't get seating on the outdoor roof deck, our experience inside was amazing. It was a total of 7 of us (3 toddlers under the age of 3) and 4 adults. The waitress was extremely accommodating of the children as she got their orders in and out so they can be fed. The food was sooo delicious and tasty my mouth is watering thinking about it. The drinks were amazing, tantalizing; it reminded me of the tropics. I will be returning time and time again. Love this place. They get an A in my book because they were accommodating of the children making special dishes without the spice. Our food came out hot and seasoned to perfection. Super disappointing- we ordered tofu pad thai and red curry with sticky rice. Pad thai had no taste and when we told the waiter to bring some sauce we got peanut sauce which also had no taste. Red curry was also very bad and runny additionally sticky rice was not sticky at all. read more

Decided to try this place out, it's right on the river and on a clear day, watching the sunset would Probably be breathtaking. The food turn around was quick was greatly appreciated. Dad has the whole crispy fish, and enjoyed it, he said it reminded him of the fish he would get back home. I had the lamb Biang biang, which was soo good. We recommend ordering the papaya salad and the calamari as well. My sister likes her jackfruit curry. The portions were just right. Staff were nice and accommodating. I wanted to give this place a chance despite the negative reviews. I give it 4.5 stars for ambiance, service and beautiful views of the Hudson. We walked in and the hostess was very nice and seated us right away. We sat outside to enjoy the views. We ordered the Globe drink which was really good. However, the food left little to be desired. We ordered the roti, the fried cauliflower, drunken noodles, and chicken rendang. First the apps. Cauliflower was the only food we thought was even decent. Had good flavor and very tasty. The roti is one whole roti cut into like 6-8 pieces with some random green curry on the side. It was very plain and not worth it. The drunken noodles were very salty and had little flavor. The chicken rendang was recommended by our server. It tasted and looked really bad. We had to send it back. It's such a shame because they have a beautiful location and really good staff. They have so much potential, but they need to work on their food. Their prices do not reflect the quality you would expect. If the owners are reading this, I ask you to take a trip to Pimaan in Emerson, NJ to taste how Thai food should really taste like. What a delicious dinner my husband & I had tonight at Sambal. We both enjoyed the delectable & perfectly seasoned Lemongrass Shrimp Soup. My fried fish entre was crisp, moist & scrumptious. My husband's duck was tasty in a panang sauce. And, the perfect finishing touch was the rice pudding which was smooth & utterly luscious. We wanted to try out this sister restaurant to Chutney Masala. We went on a Saturday evening and it was nearly full. To our surprise, the interior has not changed much except a very small bar upstairs now which makes it very croweded there. The menus are more Indian and Indian-isnpired than Thai. The three of us (one child) ordered chicken satay, curry puffs, mango chicken, and shrimp pad Thai. It definitely is flavorful enough to not overwhelm the food. Service was attentive and friendly. We were greeted on the way in and out of the restaurant. Can't wait for warmer weather so we can enjoy the outdoor deck. They opened too late to take advantage of it. We walked into sambal because red hat had a 2-3 hour wait. I love Thai food and with their view, I figured it was a no brainer. However to my dismay when we walked up to the deck, my boyfriend and I, along with other guests sitting directly next to us were looking around amazed at how close they had placed the tables together. The concept of social distancing & being 6 feet away was absent. The woman sitting next to us felt so uncomfortable that she even kept her mask on the entire time, removing it only to bite into her food. The food itself was average, nothing special. A lot of the food lacked flavor. As soon as the deck began to reach full a capacity, I asked for our dinner (which we were not even served with yet) to go as I felt SO uncomfortable with the distance between the tables. Additionally, 75% of our dinner was disrupted by bees swarming all around us. I had to keep dodging them. One of them even landed in my martini. During these times, restaurants needs to step up to ensure their customers feel comfortable and safe. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. read more

We had dinner there today. Love the environment and the view. Service was adequate. Appetizers ( Roti with curry and chicken wings) were delicious; creating high expectations for the main course. Unfortunately, the entrees were bland. My fiancé has the special seafood curry and it was not spicy and should have contained more shrimp and scallops for the $25 price. I was disappointed in the pad thai... bland with rubbery chicken and large pieces of tofu. I don't know what to make of it, such s contrast between the starters and the main course! We ate there last night, and sadly, were not impressed. It is a genuinely nice looking restaurant, with soft jazz playing and great ambience, but that is where the pros end. There is a lot of staff, but they mostly stood around talking to each other. The food we had was lackluster, and from my 9 trips to Thailand and countless meals at Sri Pra Phai in Queens (the one true Mecca of Thai food in the NY area) it was not particularly authentic or well done. The Pad Thai was overly sweet, which is typically an Americanized version, and not much was added in the way of other flavors. We ordered the papaya salad, and asked that it not be spicy. The waiter first told us that this was not possible (Sri Pra Phai and others are able to do this all the time), and that he could only tone it down. When it was served, there was literally no dressing on it whatsoever (no lime juice, garlic, etc.) which resulted in absolutely no taste. My girlfriend's mock duck dish was a bit better, but still uninspiring. It is really a shame. The 2 staff that we dealt with were nice, the place looks great, the setting looking out at the Hudson was nice, but the culinary experience was disappointing. read more

I ordered delivery from Sambal; it was my first time trying them. The food was so, so bad, I seriously wondered whether I was the victim of some sort of scam where the Uber driver who delivered the food had actually thrown it together himself in his home kitchen. I'm not exaggerating. I ordered Thai beef salad and chicken lettuce wraps. The beef salad was sort of like something my teenage cousin in rural Iowa would make if I described Thai beef salad to him in ten words or less. There were pieces of very, very dry beef; there was some wilty iceberg lettuce; and that was mostly it. It was a tiny portion, and it was a mess. The chicken lettuce wraps weren't presented as wraps, or as ingredients that could be easily made into wraps; there was a roughly sliced chunk of iceberg lettuce, packed messily with a scoop of extremely finely ground (almost pureed) chicken, and they just sort of fell out onto my plate in a big mess. With the mess of my beef salad and the mess of the lettuce wraps placed side by side, my dining partner commented, "That looks like a vomited, half-digested cow's meal." It was a perfect description. I wish I'd taken a picture. I thought the prices were pretty high, but I was hungry for Thai food, and I just assumed I would get what I paid for. I was so, so wrong. I can't overstate how bad this food was. I was incredibly hungry (hadn't eaten since breakfast), and I still couldn't enjoy it. read more

Tried this place tonight. Ambiance was cozy, service was very good. These were the positives. Unfortunately. The food between ok and good. While the spring rolls were pretty good, the calamari was plasticy... likely made from frozen. My beef and broccoli came out cold and had little flavor, but the pineapple fried rice was good. I wish I had read all the negative reviews before we ate here. I can only mirror those sentiments. We made the mistake of sitting down to eat with a cranky two year old. After we ordered we realized we weren't going to make it through dinner without a meltdown. Husband asks ditzy waitress to wrap everything up and we will take it to go. Toddler is now running up to strangers tables and disrupting their dinners. Husband takes toddler for a walk while I wait for he food to be wrapped up to go as we assume that the food will be ready shortly. 2At that moment the appetizers arrive, so waitress says do you want to wrap it up here or have me take it back for them to wrap. She goes to get containers and I wrap up the apps and sit by e to wait for the entrees. Fast forward almost3 an hour and I'm still sitting there alone and obviously very mad. No acknowledgment from waitress, have flagged her down a couple times to ask about the food and says it will be right out. After flagging her down for the 3rd or 4th time I say either the two entrees are canceled or I need them now. I'm trying to be patient, having worked in food service I understand having an off night. Miraculously they appear. If you see someone with a child who needs to leave a restaurant you make the effort to get them on their way. No consideration for anyone at this place. None of us ate, an hour and half of my time was wasted sitting around alone. 90$ check for terrible service. I can't comment on the food as it is now ice cold sitting on my kitchen counter. No apology or offer to comp anything. The only thing this place has going for it is the view. I hate leaving bad reviews but this restaurant needs to step up its game. Train your servers, offer to comp a drink or app proactively, have a manager check in on tables and you will have a customer for life. There are better Thai restaurants that take care of their customers and give you more bang for your buck. Lesson learned, we will not be back. read more

Ordered from here for delivery, had really high expectations for this place. My food was tasteless and dry. I ordered the pad Thai, it was really dry and the flavoring was off. We also ordered the Massaman curry which was watery not thick like it's supposed to be and also not enough flavor. I thought maybe it was just a bad day or something so I ordered from here again on a different day and the food was even worse then the first time. Definitely won't be ordering from here again.
