Salt and Lime is a modern Mexican restaurant located in Del Mar. The restaurant was busy and the music was a bit loud, but it definitely was an exciting environment to dine at. Great location and beach city setup inside. Came here with party of three on Thursday 6pm, got super lucky on the street parking and got seated immediately. The welcome on the house chips is fresh and crispy. And the taco ( Baja fish) one is 5 star, but the shrimp taco was disappointing (2 star). Highly recommended the lava cake with vanilla ice cream, great texture and freshly baked, not super sweet. Overall service is good, fast refill water, friendly waiters, only unhappy experience in waiting for the paper print out receipt. Stopped by for dinner on a rainy Sunday night. We didn't want to wait for a table so sat at the bar. Upscale Mexican fare with Tulum vibes. Food presentation was top notch. Visiting Del Mar for the day and decided to try this spot out, boy am I glad I did. The service was on point. Omar our server made sure we were well taken care of. I had the 12oz ribeye with side of potatoes that were the best potatoes i've ever had. But the dish that stole the show was the aguachiles negros. The best aguachiles I've ever had hands down. So much flavor packed into so many ingredients for this dish. Lastly the attention to detail in every dish that came out, as well as the presentation for the food, was something you rarely get at mexican restaurants here in the states. Ambiance was also excellent with great song selection! This is the spot to try out next time you're in town. read more

Well, the water was good. Decor is cute. Other than that.... Bring puffy coat and blankets if you don't want to freeze. It's all outdoor with a breeze that heaters can't compete with. Bundle up. Went to car to get more clothing but we still quickly became ice cubes. We were seated about ten feet from bar at a tiny bar top table. The bartender was so loud, our conversation became pointless to even try. The slamming around and crazy shaking had to be for show to rest of restaurant and became our misery. We ordered before realizing this. Chips and salsa came quickly after we ordered. The chips had no salt and one salsa had so much lime, my water was entirely downed. The food arrived with no where to put any other dish on this tiny table. The chips & salsa plate with drinks was all it could hold. So I held the chips plate just so server could hurriedly put items on table and left. With me oddly holding the chip plate and no where to put it. The server didn't even notice my drink was knocked over. So we put the chips plate on another empty table and cleaned up the spilled drink myself to not get wet. One sever, one bartender and one hostess was only staff outside of kitchen and place looked to be was 80% full. No one came back to ask how was food, if we needed anything (we did), didn't refill empty waters (needed more water), if we wanted more drinks... One tiny dish had no salt but salt not to be found or could be asked for. Another dish was terrible- missing a key ingredient, cold and limed to death. There went the last glass of water that was thankfully shared. So we sat without talking, ate some of the fried dish and munched saltless chips, sharing the one unspilled drink without water. Could have used an additional ingredient on that one bland drink to make it more palatable but no point anymore. Server finally came to ask if we needed a to go box and I said only one, pointing out the uneaten dishes was not going anywhere. The server brought a take out box and took off without a word before I could ask for check. 25min later in the one server taking order of big table with reservations, we finally grabbed the bartender to get check. He didn't ask about anything or make any conversation- not even a goodbye. Paid for the unnoticed spilled drink and uneaten dishes, just desperate to get home for a hot shower to de-thaw. Since there was only a fried dish edible, we knew our tummies would be upset if we ate all of one mediocre shared dish after having eaten the saltless fried chips. Drank water to absolve the thirst on way home. Got warm finally once home. Then made dinner, ate with actual conversation to hear one another, and cleaned up. The restaurant is on street level, so no ocean views that we saw. But people walked in to take pics of decor for posting and then left. Tables very close to each other and limited space so bringing a dog would not be a good idea. Would be stepped on and in way for many. So to bring it back around in this review, the room temp water was good. And decor is cute. No one was rude which was the one star. Just under staffed and no attention to correct and make situation pleasant again. Salt would have made chips good. Salt would have made one dish good again. I don't mind asking for forgotten ingredients to make the drink be as it should have been, and food better. I can ask for more water if possible, or even get it myself. Just wasn't possible to communicate at all. Should have gotten hostess to say we need to be seated away from bar (no one was seated there) and needed decent sized table once food arrived. Couldn't believe items shoved down on tiny table, drink spilled, holding dish with no where to put it and server just quickly walked away before a word could be yelled over the bartender's shaking. We just tried to make best of it and eat while food was warm, to hopefully get us warmer. It was all too much of a compounding situation. Was surprised from ratings and sought new place to try but alas, it is what it was for us. We literally wanted to walk out. read more

The two stars here are for very nice hostess and waiter and a pretty restaurant. But I cannot believe just how bad the food was! First, we ordered chips and salsa to start. They didn't come out until after we had been served our main course and they were merely mid. Speaking of main course, I ordered something that on the menu was called a rib-eye. There is no version of a rib eye in the history of beef that has ever looked or tasted this bad. It was an unappetizing color that I have never seen in a half-decent cut of meat, like a uniform light brown. It was fatty, not marbled like rib-eye. It looked like a rump steak that came out of a can. It tasted worse. I'm glad they let me bring my dog in, because she is the only one who benefited from this $56 steak. It was shockingly bad. You'd get far better from Sizzler. Honestly, in a long life of steak eating, I have never been served something this awful. Avoid any restaurant that would pass off this mystery meat as a $56 rib-eye! read more

Recently came here to attend a birthday gathering. Did not need a reservation. We were initially seated in the sun, and they reseated us when the tables became available. I can't recall the name of the waiter we had but he was incredible! Overall, the restaurant has a very bright and trendy Mexican vibe. I thought the menu had interesting options. We tried a variety, and were pleased for the most part. They don't have kids part of the menu on hand, but they do have kids options. For instance, my niece ordered a kids quesadilla. My favorite food was the salt and lime salads. It was refreshing and had clean citrusy and crunchy flavors. The popcorn shrimp was yummy and did not feel overly greasy. I was surprised by how yummy their potato taquitos were as well. Be careful because it is easy to over order tapas, which is good for variety but can rack up the bill. read more

Location is perfect! Outside seating with a view of the ocean. Drinks were horrible. We got the la Rosa and put the lime in the coconut cocktail and they were not good. The la Rosa was so bitter and strong. It tasted like tequila only. When I asked for sprite to add to it I was brought back an orange liquor to mix in. Not as strong but still not good. We walked in right as the happy hour was starting at 3 PM and ended up ordering everything from the happy hour menu. Our order included the Mar y Tierra quesadilla, two carne asada tacos, and the won-tostada. The tacos and won-tostada were incredible, while the quesadilla was just okay. We also tried the margaritas, which paired perfectly with the food. WOWWW!! This is the place to be food wise!! We saw this driving out to Encinitas and on the way back we stopped for a quick bite. I got two chicken tacos and one beef taco along with the queso. The food was incredible overall. Our server was also super nice but looked like he was the only server in charge of around 8 tables so after we put in the order we were not checked on until he brought the check. I wish this listing did not combine the reviews from the past mobile food truck setup with the feedback for the new brick-and-mortar location in downtown Del Mar. Salt and Lime has replaced two short-lived Italian restaurants in the ground level suite that used to be the home of PrepKitchen. There is a dedicated parking garage located behind/below the complex which is helpful in case open curbside spaces cannot be found on Camino Del Mar. The biggest change to the decor was more greenery in the form of hanging plants. The modern Mexican menu featured categories of Pa'compartir (shareable appetizers), Salads, Tostadas, Ceviche, Tacos, and Mains. One area that caught my attention was the pricing, specifically for the tacos. For a single taco, they ranged from $8 for asparagus to $12(!) for quesabirria. I asked about the latter taco and said I had never seen such a high price for one birria taco, even with cheese. It's usually half the cost at places closer to where I live. With tacos ruled out, I decided to order the Salmon Del Mar from the list of Mains. The fillet was accompanied with quinoa, pineapple pico de gallo, and mango habanero sweet sauce. I really enjoyed the sauce, however a side like a vegetable or a starchy root would have been ideal to complement the fish. The service from the bartender was acceptable while the value for the amount of food was what limited my rating to three stars for the meal I had at Salt and Lime. read more

Salt & Lime is an absolute gem! My husband and I had a fantastic meal here and will definitely be back. The homemade salsa is incredible--fresh, flavorful, and the perfect start to our meal. We ordered tacos, which were delicious, and we can't wait to explore more of the menu next time. Unfortunately, we didn't have room for dessert, but I did see someone order the churros, and they looked amazing! The ambience is relaxed, the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming, and the customer service is excellent. There's plenty of seating, making it a great spot to enjoy a meal. Highly recommend! Visited here for lunch on a Tuesday. Overall, the experience was pleasant, the food was fresh and delicious; would definitely visit again. The service was fair and attentive, nothing I can complain about. Parking was easy as they have a dedicated parking structure under the restaurant. My party and I ordered: * Aguachile Negro * Tacos (3 each, 6 total) My three choices of tacos were: Asada, Mi-rey, and Baja Fish. Out of the three, Mi-rey was my favorite; an explosion of flavor and freshness. Asada was great too, I think it might've had Chinese Crispy Fried Garlic. They recommend 3 for one person, but if you're ordering an appetizer like myself, I'd say 2 is enough. The ambiance was peaceful, yet casual; not too quiet, not too noisy. The ocean breeze of the local area only adds to the experience. The place is semi-open, but it doesn't feel like you're entirely "outdoors" which I appreciated. You can't go wrong with anything on their menu! We had fantastic food, service, and views. We were seated right away and quickly greeted by our server. We had a very attentive and kind server too! After ordering we probably received our food within 10 minutes, pretty fast! We started out with chips and salsa. Chips were crispy and not too salty and both salsas were fresh with very subtle heat. My friend had the ceviche Yucatán and she loved it. The shrimp and mahi were fresh and perfectly marinated at the table when served. I had the chicken al-pastor and carne asada tacos, and both were absolutely delicious. The meat in each were juicy with a ton of flavor. Salsa, guac, onions, etc. made each taco even better. Real tortillas too with a nice thickness! We ended the night with churros which were suggested to us. We were so happy they were a suggestion because they were perfect. The churros were warm, cream filled, and had delicious dipping sauces. The caramel was the favorite sauce although the chocolate was still good. My friends and I do a weekly Taco Tuesday, so we decided to check this restaurant out. We sat in the patio area right beneath the pink tree - the decor was so cute! Food came out fast and was very, very good. Rudy was our server and he went above and beyond explaining the menu and ensuring that we ordered all the good things! The restaurant is technically all outdoors but with the shade, ocean breeze, and beautiful views, I found the ambience to be very relaxing and pleasant. We ordered: Asada and baja fish tacos White mole and mushrooms Guacamole salt and lime Mexican french toast I enjoyed every dish, especially the white mole and mushrooms! The asada tacos were piled high with steak which I appreciated. The menu had a very wide selection of food, especially when the brunch menu is available, including lots of vegetarian options! Mojito tasted like a mocktail, classic margarita like I made one for the first time. Asada tacos had nice toppings but beef was tasteless and overall cold taco. I feel like they should offer each taco as a plate of three or with complimentary sides. The fish taco was alright, it had too much lettuce/cabbage topping and could barely taste the fish. I also ordered the carne asada which was so so, the meat was overcooked and chewy. Lastly, I had the shrimp taco which had two pieces of shrimp. Overall, 6/10 for tacos. Went here with my husband for date night and I can't believe we haven't been here sooner! We were sat in the bar. The chairs aren't comfortable on your legs if you're like me and wore a sundress, but that's okay because the margaritas were delicious and I soon forgot my pain. Happy hour here is 7 days per week from 2:30-5:30pm and they had great prices! Our server Annika was the sweetest and so helpful with recommendations. First up was our shot and classic marg - delicious. Super smooth tequila. Chips and salsa were complimentary and came out with our margs and shots. The salsas are so tasty and not overly hot (could've been spicier, honestly, but the flavor was there!!), so these salsas could be enjoyed by kids or those who aren't huge on spice. We then ordered popcorn shrimp and some Queso fundido - both excellent. The cheese pull on that Queso was epic, and the popcorn shrimp were absolute flavor bombs of goodness; perfectly crispy and not at all overcooked. (Pro tip - put the popcorn shrimp on a tortilla that comes with the queso, then load up the queso on there and top with salsa from the chip platter - you're welcome). We then ordered a Put The Lime In The Coconut cocktail, and when I tell you that I would do some questionable things for that cocktail...I mean it. I had two of them, that's how good they were. My husband and I also got tacos - I ordered the quesobirria, the mahi mahi, and the grilled shrimp tacos. I'm a sucker for a good slaw, but I did have to remove a little bit from each taco just so I could fit it all in my mouth for a bite. Past that, these tacos were absolute perfection. I will say though that I wished the quesobirria taco had more onions and cilantro on it, but that could just be personal preference. The consummé to dip it in was so flavorful, too. The restaurant itself is small and I could see it getting very crowded, but we came right at the start of happy hour so we managed to avoid a line. The overall ambiance is actually so stunning, and I'd love to come back at night to see the lights on the ceiling lit up! It feels very breezy and open in there despite its smaller size. Parking was easy as we managed to find one remaining spot in the attached garage, but if you're not lucky like we were, you may have to hunt around and walk. Beautiful location near the beach and the interior really well thought out with a tropical feel. The classic Margarita is always my choice first time at a Mexican restaurant. The margarita here is solid. Chips and guacamole were ok with the guacamole needing a bit more lime and salt. I tried the Baja fish taco and the grilled shrimp taco. The fish taco mango sauce was sweet and I like the concept but felt that the sauce was too overwhelming on the fish taco. This is a case where I felt perhaps less is more. While I liked the earthy and Smokey flavor of the shrimp taco, again the ancho sauce overpowered the plump shrimp. I wish the proteins themselves would stand out more. I feel that the potential is there and could be much better with a few tweaks. read more
