This is a constructive review and I have to be honest...nicely. I read wonderful reviews about Rachel on Yelp so thought I'd try Jo-el. Just moved so trying to find someone good is tough. I walked in and was a bit undecided on what style I wanted. After our conversation, I could tell she was frustrated. I'm not one for change, so just kept the old style. After about an hour, my bangs were about halfway around my head - I went home and cried. It's 8 months later and they're still growing out. Did I mention I had a $45 coupon and she said it didn't apply to her since she was a more experienced stylist? The rest of the cut was great, and if you know what you want, I'm sure she's fantastic. I loved Salon Jo-El! I have been looking for a salon in the Phoenix area since moving here two years ago. I previously got my hair cut at Toni and Guy in Tucson, but did not love any of the Toni and Guys here due to service/location. I also tried some other highly recommended/rated salons like The Root and Snapdragon. I left both salons disappointed. I got my hair cut by Rachel. She was very friendly and detail-oriented. She understood exactly what I wanted (lots of layers and texture). She also took the time to fully style it at the end, which I really appreciate because it makes a difference in how you feel initially with the overall cut. What a great find! This place is awesome! I was looking for a salon for my two boys and they gave me the best salon for them. It was so easy to schedule (text!) And they were able to take both at the same time which is heaven for any busy parents out there... The team was so kind to the boys and we got fantastic haircuts!!! It is a bit more expensive than what I usually pay for the boys haircuts so that is the only thing I would recommend checking first but I was so happy with them I plan to get my own haircut with them! I have really thick Asian hair and I have a lot of it. Maddie and Joel cut my hair and it's hands down one of the best cuts I've received. Maddie is so cool to talk to and you can tell she takes her art seriously. Chica reads books and regularly goes to training to keep up with the trends. She really listens to what you want. Joel finished my cut when Maddie asked him for a consult and he added another layer of awesomeness to my hair. My hair fell so beautifully and has such beautiful layers. From the first time I went to Salon Joel in Scottsdale, I was impressed and will never go to another salon. Joel Porter has this ability to figure out what I want and take it to the next level, and I when I leave, the cut/style is always way cuter than I expected. I don't know how he does that. He's got this ability to balance my face out with a cut, and make me look way younger without looking like I'm trying too hard, if that makes sense--in my middle age, this is very important. I do NOT want a SOCCER mom hair do, and I do NOT want to look like I have the same style since high school--despite the resurgence of the classic hair styles, or the return of 80s hair--you cannot pull that off in your 'middle age' without looking like you are totally out of date. (if you wore the trend the first time--don't try it the second time!) His salon moved across the street, (still on Craftsman/inside covet) He does a lot of education for TIGI...so chances are that TIGI or independent young stylist you saw was trained by Joel Porter. He does a lot of training all over the west coast apparently. To me, this says he will always be cutting edge, (not like the gal I left for him....who couldn't keep up with my requests!) Joel is a nice guy, easy on the eyes and you're going to love your hair, possibly for the first time, when he's done. I have been going to the same stylist for 15+ years but decided to find someone closer to home. After reading the reviews, I made an appointment at Jo-El. I was very nervous to say the least and I'm sure Teresa knew that. I asked for an expert colorist and that's exactly what I got. Teresa is not only adorable but was up to the challenge! I had some color issues that I knew would be a challenge but Teresa made me comfortable and exceeded my expectations. She did a fantastic job on my color. I'm sure I'll be back! As for the venue, it was clean, bright and white. The music was a little too loud for me which made it a little difficult talking to Teresa but it's not something that would stop me from going there. read more

I had a quarantine 'accident' and bleached my hair our of boredom. After having a complete meltdown, I found Teresa and was able to get an appointment to see if she could save my hair. If anyone wants to go blonde, or has a 'blonde moment' and damages their own hair, please go see Teresa! She was able to save my hair and gave me the tools to restore it back to it's original state. Teresa was caring and understanding from the moment I walked in! Some hair stylists would criticize you for doing your hair yourself, but not her. Rachel Bonn has been cutting and coloring my hair for years. I've been through shags, bobs, pixies, red, blonde, brown, everything. I'm back to my blonde bob, btw. The salon is very impressive, modern vibe, and very clean! Lash extensions take awhile but the room is very comfortable and relaxing. I can't forget to mention my lashes look amazing and very natural, I always get compliments after Theresa does my lashes. I arrived at the salon, with long, lifeless hair and left with a shoulder length style and color that brought some excitement back to my appearance! I had to go back to get my hair fixed here, because the girl who cut my hair gave me a lopsided haircut. My hair was literally 2 to 3 inches longer on one side (and this was not intended to be an asymmetrical haircut). Bizarrely enough, she was completely incapable of seeing this fact and despite the fact that I was showing her the side that was longer she kept cutting the opposite side and making the hair even more lopsided. Maybe she was dyslexic and was flipping the sides around in her mind. Anyway, I finally gave up and decided I did not want her to screw up what was left of my hair anymore so I said I was happy and left. I have never had a haircut that has been so obviously lopsided. I had to leave when I did actually book an appointment because the stylist was over 30 minutes late into my appointment (I waited a total of 45 minutes) and wasn't acknowledged, except by the receptionist on the way out. I went to this salon a little under two months ago because one of their stylists came into my work offering a 20% off coupon for first time clients. I currently have light red hair and wanted to do a full head of highlights to start my process back to blonde with a trim. The stylist was awesome! He was very friendly and did a great job, I was on a time crunch and let him know that it was okay for him to not blow dry my hair after rinsing, but he managed to almost completely blow dry and give me a little bit of a trim after my highlights in under 4 hours. I was very pleased with the outcome of my hair. When he had finished and I walked over to cash out with the receptionist, I presented my 20% off coupon. Immediately upon seeing that I had a coupon, the owner hurried over to the receptionist counter and dictated to the receptionist what to charge me for. I didn't catch what he had listed, but in total, including a tip for the amazing stylist, it came to around a little less than 200. I understand that it's a nice salon, and like I've stated before, I was so pleased with my hair, but the way the owner had rushed up only once he'd seen my coupon to dictate what to charge me, just didn't sit well with me. I walked out feeling jipped. I understand you run a business and you need to make money, but I will not be returning because I wouldn't be able to afford coming in on the way the owner purposely up charged me. What really sucks is I really did like the stylist and his work, and he lost out on a client because of the owner. Update: After calling and speaking with me while trying to amend the situation and notifying me that I had actually not spent as much as I originally thought, and after a week later, texting me to ask me to change my Yelp review to match the price they have in their records, I did. He explained to me I was charged 140. 140 + good tip = around $200. He then also explained to me multiple times that his stylist was new and he was only helping his stylist out with prices, so he said I must have misread the conversation wrong and his intentions were not to do that. After I asked him if his receptionist knew the prices he also said she was pretty new. Thank you for apologizing and offering to let me come in for a free service to try to fix the situation, but like I said before, people will not remember what you did, they will remember how they felt. I remember feeling jipped and that the owner called and texted me asking me to change my Yelp review and that when I spoke with him he seemed to blame the situation on everyone but himself. read more
