I came to this salon for my first time back in March 2026: What attracted me to this salon was the head spa and the great reviews I was able to find. My hairstylist (unfortunately I don't remember her name :( was incredible. I was doing research of Japanese head spas and that's how I ended up finding this place. Samantha was amazing! I came in with no inspiration pics or anything just some ideas and some dislikes and she killed it. I needed my hair to be long enough I could put it up and I wanted framing bangs. I was looking to get a wolf cut style but don't tend to style at home enough for that kind of maintenance. She took all of my ideas and blew it out of the water. I super appreciated her kindness information on how to style easily and gave me the haircut I wanted from a description alone! The energy of the shop itself has a beautiful layout and getting my hair washed was in a lovely darker room and she was super considerate of my hair coloring while washing. I went in about 3 weeks ago and was very deliberate in telling the stylist that my scalp has allergic reactions to chemicals being applied directly to my scalp. She chose to apply toner as my last step in the coloring process. My ears and back of my neck were so badly burned, they have not yet recovered. I will not be back. read more

Amanda was amazing! She took time to listen to me and made me feel comfortable. This was my first time in and I wanted to pamper myself. I got the head spa service and treatment and it was incredibly relaxing. I will absolutely be coming back to see her. Update: I was initially put off by them not having a way to reach anyone in the salon and the concierge number was no help. HOWEVER, when I emailed about my concerns I received a quick reply. I have a weird "shelf" thing that my hair does and Amanda let me come back to get it "fixed". She genuinely wanted me to love my hair and after the fix I absolutely do! Unfortunately I have to update my review to add that after several visits I noticed I was no longer getting the layered short cut that looks best on me and that I requested but instead was getting the standard "you're a middle-aged lady so let's just whack your hair off, you don't need those layers and you won't notice" cut which sadly is so common here in Phoenix. I now get my hair cut in Florida. Additionally, for the prices charged at this salon we should expect a live person to answer the phone, not to have to schedule online through a user-unfriendly platform--and I'm normally a big fan of scheduling myself online. No one responds to their "concierge text" line either. read more

First time at the root and I had an appointment with Amanda. I was super excited, but she was 25 mins late. I get that things happen/other appointments run late and probably why she rushed my service but she was not friendly or asked me a single question about myself. I thought maybe it was because she was tired or something but she had another appointment right after mine and was super smiley and friendly to her. It was really awkward and I felt like I was a burden. The stylist that washed my hair was really sweet and made my appointment better. We don't need to be best friends but a bit of kindness goes a long way, people look forward to getting services done. read more

After waiting 3 years to get my hair done I finally decided to go to Tyler. He had great reviews and I felt confident that he could highlight and cut my fine hair. He was professional and acted like he knew what he was doing especially because since he said he had 17 years of experience. Unfortunately that wasn't the case. I asked for a full highlight and the back of my hair is DARK still. Like no highlights at the nape. That's not the bad part though, I did not want any length off the front of my hair since it's very fine. It was passed my shoulders in the back and sat on my collar bone in the front. Tyler proceeded to cut all my hair off and then didn't know what to do. He ended up not finishing my haircut and I had to wait for someone else to finish my haircut. That was even worse! I asked if I could just be done because the haircut was a disaster and he was hacking my hair in the back. I'm devastated they still charged me $223 for the service for such a horrific experience and outcome and I still tipped on that. The next day I had to pay someone else to fix my hair so I could look presentable. I would never go back and I wish they would refund me money. No one should sit through 4+ hours to get a botched job done and then have to go somewhere else and pay to fix what you they messed up at a professional salon. I had to pay for my highlights to be toned again too since I left with gold hair. This review is not based on the salon at all but the 2 stylist who made my hair so ugly. Such an unfortunate experience. I'm hoping to hear from the owner to get this resolved. read more

I scheduled and PAID for a consultation with Amanda. My appointment was scheduled for 12:45. I arrived about 7 minutes early. I checked in and waited. And waited. And WAITED. The front desk girl was kind enough to let me know 20 minutes after my appointment that Amanda would be with me shortly. 30 minutes later, Amanda finally came to get me. NO I am so sorry for making you wait, nada. That right there set things in the wrong direction for me. An apology goes a long way in my book. My time is worth something. Especially when I show up early after driving 40 minutes to get there. After showing her what I was hoping for with cut and color, I was quoted $420 for grey blending?! Maybe I didn't hear her correctly? I mean, what? I guess to add insult to injury she also wanted to rob me. Then she had the gall to ask me if I wanted to book?! Needless to say as another yelper mentioned there was no pleasantries of any kind. Being prompt isn't always in our control but apologies are. I have a special event and wanted to look my best. I called and booked an appointment with Jules on Saturday for the following Thursday. I received a confirmation text Saturday. I received another confirmation text on Wednesday which I again confirmed. I also called and spoke with the receptionist in person to confirm. Thursday morning, they sent me a text saying they had to cancel my appointment. I called and they said they had double booked. I explained this was for a special event and I had already confirmed with them 3 times. I requested to speak with a manager. The receptionist said the manager was not available. I am very disappointed by their unprofessional service. They could have had a new and loyal customer. I will be taking my business elsewhere. read more

I'm so happy I found Jules! He saved my hair I've been one of Jules' lucky clients for about two years and he has not only transformed the way my hair looks, it is somehow healthier than it has been in years - I didn't think this was possible considering I've been highlighting my (very) dark brown hair light blonde for the better part of a decade. After moving to AZ and bouncing around to a few different stylists in Phoenix, I felt like my hair was damaged beyond repair. After struggling to find a stylist near me and who had hours that could work with my schedule, I found The Root and booked an appointment with Jules. I didn't know what to expect but I left that appointment happier with my hair than I had been in so long!!! Jules not only gave me beautiful, bright, natural looking highlights but he was super mindful of my hair health and has continued to be for every appointment since that first one two years ago. I honestly thought I would never get my length back but my hair is finally back and I know it's due to the care and expertise that Jules has. The salon itself is also super professional and clean. Norma is so sweet too, she is always in a good mood and ready to offer a glass of wine or coffee for clients who just need a little self care Booking is super easy online and they communicate reminders which are honestly so helpful for me. It's been a year and the fact that they were so careless about my hair really still really saddens me. I asked questions and no one thought it would be a good idea to answer them professionally, they just wanted me to pay for the service no matter what so they convinced me it was a good idea to dye my hair pink after dying it black. 10/10 would not recommend. Time flies when you're happy with your salon... and wow - it has now been over a decade since I started going to The Root Salon! Seeing that it has been almost four years since my last review and ten years since my initial review, and recognizing the fact that we've been dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic for the last two years, I feel like I'm overdue for an updated review! I continue to be super pleased with the five star service that I've received at this salon. I see Dana consistently every 8 weeks or so and he has become a mind-reader at what I want/need each visit. Sometimes it's a cut. Others it's a color treatment, blowout, conditioning treatment, etc... He does a fabulous job. I recently trusted Dana to put some blue streaks in my daughter's hair and he did a great job with that too... I appreciate that the front desk always calls / texts / emails to confirm my appointments and that they are pretty much always on time as well. I said this before, but I'll say it again as it continues to resonate: Everyone that works at this salon is friendly and easy to talk to... they really do live by the values on their website: relationships, creativity, fun, learning, humor, hard work, happiness and respect. I sometimes go in and work while I am there and I appreciate that the team respects that. Other times, when I'm feeling chatty, there is plenty to chat about and my visits fly by! The hospitality and customer service here is pretty amazing. My boyfriend and I are from Cali and helped our friend move to Arizona. We were only going to be there for a weekend, but I decided to take advantage of the fact that that AZ had salons open during the pandemic. Back in my city, hair salons have not reopened yet. Mallorie was super nice, and gave me some really awesome tips about how to maintain my hair. AND she surprised me with a sweet note a few days after I got back to Cali! I moved to Phoenix from the East Coast almost 4 years ago & had been struggling to find a stylist who knows how to cut wavy/curly hair. I even went to Scottsdale to a "curly hair" salon. Complete waste of time & money. I was actually trying to make an appointment at another salon but they didn't answer when they were supposed to be open, left a message but didn't hear back for hours so I called The Root Salon & I'm so glad I did. The receptionist asked about my hair texture then suggested I have Mikey cut my hair as he specializes in curly/wavy hair. I finally found my stylist!! This man KNOWS what he's doing. To say he did a great job is an understatement. FYI, his fee is on the higher side but it's what I paid back in Manhattan so I was fine with it. Worth every penny in my opinion. read more

I came here recently to get my hair trimmed. When I walked in, I was immediately greeted by the lady at the front desk. She asked me to have a drink and offered me some coffee. Their coffee was delicious. When my stylist took me back, she wasn't overly chatty, which I love because I like to relax when I'm getting pampered. She gave me a wonderful scalp massage and did exactly as I asked, which was to lightly trim about half an inch off the bottom of my hair. The experience was fantastic, based on that alone I would go there again. The ONLY reason that I'm going to find a new dealing is because it cost me $80 to have, literally, the smallest amount of hair taken off the bottom of my hair, which is all one length. That's just way too pricey for something that took no longer than 10 minutes. Beautiful place, I do recommend for all other reasons, but the price is just too high in these days of 7% inflation... read more

On my recent visit to see my dad at his new home in Phoenix, Arizona, I was treated to a hair color session by my dad at The Root Salon where he gets his hair done by Shane. I just want to say, does a salon visit get any better? Shane was on vacation the day I was in town so the friendly front desk girls placed me with senior colorist Tyler. I haven't had my hair done in FOREVER since my recent move to Austin and was on a waiting list to see a friend's hairdresser before my trip to Phoenix but my dad said to let him treat me. I'm SO glad I did!!! Tyler is a great listener and we talked about a plan to give my natural blonde locks a lift that would be easy on my budget and give my "money pieces" the bright boost I love! The amazing staff brought me baked goods for breakfast and a fabulous coffee drink while Tyler went to work. After my color was transformed into a spectacular summer shade, Jada trimmed my neglected ends an gave me a deep conditioning treatment with their fancy shmancy warming technology and a beautiful blow out with beach waves and shine. My hair felt AMAZING and I think that Tyler and Jada are my new mane magicians. May dad better get used to sleeping on the couch because imma gonna need to be paying this superb salon at least twice a year!
