I REALLY wanted to like this place. I read some good reviews and figured I'd give it a shot. I moved to this side of town recently and it wasn't too far from where I live. I set up an appointment with Michael since I saw he had done previous clients that went from blonde to dark copper tones. I was impressed from the photos and scheduled my appointment. I was giddy with excitement going in, excited to change my hair color for the first time in six years. When I went in, I came early and he was able to take me in early. He offered me water and was amiable to start. I showed him what I was hoping for, and he gave me a lot of push back. I'm blonde with dark roots, and I wanted to go a darker deep reddish color with hints of brown, to deposit some brown/red tones and leave some bright pieces out. He said I can't do that since I'm blonde and it'd turn my hair pink. Okay... So I ask him what I can do instead to suit me and he showed me a bunch of colors that were the FURTHEST thing from what I wanted. I explicitly said I wanted warmth and color and he showed me dull browns and dish water, lackluster colors, which he also described as "boring". For the next 20 minutes, he continued to "school" me on colors -- how I didn't understand how hair coloring worked and his 22 years of experience said it wasn't possible. "With your skin tone, your eyes, no -- it's gonna look bad after one wash, it's going to turn pink, it'll fade..." Okay. I kept asking questions, trying to understand why he couldn't do it or any version of red (when I had seen he'd done it before) but I kept feeling like I was being talked down to. Now, I understand red is a tough color. It fades fast and also is hard to lift when going back to blonde. But I did research for weeks, and had seen MANY people going from blonde to red. I also have been a redhead before and loved it. I got compliments. I also have gone from blonde to red before (using protein fillers) and it was FINE. I'm tired of bleaching my hair and wanted to put some life back in it. Eventually, I'll go back to my natural brown. But my conversation with Michael left me feeling "stupid", which I'm not. I felt like I was being talked to like a child and he really wasn't listening to what I was wanting. He said "anyone who says they can do this color is lying, they just want your money". I was disappointed and he could see that, but he kept chuckling and laughing in a tone, and kept saying how I needed to figure out what I wanted. I couldn't wait to get out of there, and I was in tears on the way home. To be clear, I'm not upset that he disagreed with what I wanted. I value the opinion of whoever is doing my hair. However, I am upset with the tone and manner with which his opinion was delivered. I've read a couple other reviews that were similar, but I won't come back here again. read more

I've been going to Gina for about 2 years. I was trying to grow out a bad highlight job and layers so she gave me a bob so we could get a lot of bad color out and even up my hair. After 16 months Gina started me back on my fine baby highlights that look so natural. I go for root touchups every 3 months. She's very meticulous in color and cutting. I had a great experience at Off Camber w/ Alec! Everything was perfect! 1. Location and parking was excellent! 2. Very clean! Bright and Cheerful environment. 3. Alec took his time and was extraordinarily inquisitive about my end goal. 4. Alec did an amazing job with my base color, highlights and cut. As a matter of fact, he wasn't satisfied with the base color outcome (even though I thought it was great) so he didn't charge me and gave me the option to come back at my convenience-which will be in 3 days and he will charge me then. 5. Ben Barnes is a magician. He has been doing my hair (long blonde) for about 14 years and by far delivers the best color. Over the years I have seen a few different people for whatever reason and it only leads to disappointment. Blondes are picky... he gets it right every time. My request: 'I want it super blonde, no brassiness. I want it cool without being grey but also warm without being yellow. I hate my natural, so I want A LOT of highlights. Can you also make my natural highlights just a little lighter? No I don't want all over color. Dimension but not streaky... Please give me all over color without it being all over color.' My request is nearly impossible and he nails it every time. He uses a proprietary color board (Single Track) that gets the color so close to your scalp it looks completely natural eliminating that tiny grow out line you can't avoid when using regular foils. Not only does it look great it allows me to go longer between appointments. The best compliment a blonde can receive is when someone asks if it's natural. I get is constantly after Ben does my hair. Beyond his top notch skill level the salon has a great vibe. I feel a lot of salons have a gossipy/judgy feel and everyone at Off Camber get along so well and are extremely positive. My stylist was Elizabeth and not only was she the sweetest person, she is amazing at what she does! I had a hard time finding a hair salon that I could trust but found this place via Yelp and after seeing the pictures of her work, I took a leap of faith and booked an appointment. I wanted a natural Balayage style and trim my long hair with light layers and she did an amazing job. Everyone has been complimenting me on the outcome and I highly recommend Elizabeth! I got the Balayage highlights and trimmed a good 3-4 inches of my hair and the total came out to around $200 (including tip), which is very fair. I think this place is the kind of salon you only ever visit once. I scheduled a last minute appointment when my stylist quit her salon and I was in a bind right before a wedding. My stylist was good, but they didn't really listen to me about cutting my bangs and they were not what I wanted. My blonde color was one tone only and very brassy. The stylist asked me the same question (casual conversation) twice, which may have been an off day or they weren't paying attention, I don't know. They also did not even try to schedule a follow up appointment with me. Nice people but I won't go back- the prices weren't cheap and the result was not great. read more

i came here since i was traveling to arizona. i had virgin dirty blonde hair/very light brown. i get my hair cut regularly every month. i had long hair too. almost past my butt. i just get trims. when i came here i asked to get ash brown highlights since my hair was pretty light. the person that did my hair (not saying names) was touching my hair and moving it around and making faces, talking about how the brown wouldn't look good on me. and that hurt bc i'm mexican and white. and that the light color wouldn't look good with my skin. i'm closer to pale. but everyone looks good no matter their skin. but i'm pale with blonde ish hair so why didn't it look good? i always got compliments.. anyways, it's what i want. idc what her opinion was about me. i came back to a different person a few days later, and they said they would do it. i paid roughly around 200 dollars for simple highlights. they said my hair wasn't blonde enough so they said they wanted bleached my hair when i said i didn't want to bc i wanted it to stay my natural color mostly. and they didn't listen. they just kept arguing abasing me. i just let them do what they did bc i don't like to argue and i have social anxiety. my head was burning like crazy. they didn't do a test strand. my face was red and my scalp burned. they didn't clean up around the edges where the bleach touched my forehead. they ended up leaving the bleach wayyy to long. since they were off talking to their friends. my hair was all melted and fried. i was so mad. i paid the money and stormed out without yelling or getting mad. i cried On my way home. (it was my last day in arizona.) and i'll leave a picture of my hair. i'm so disappointed. they didn't apologize. or try to fix it. i ended up fixing my hair myself. i had to cut off so much. my hair is now to my shoulders... before it was almost past my butt :(( not going to any salons anymore. i like to do my own hair now. bc people don't seem to listen to the customer. at least at this salon SMH i colored my hair red a few months after the damage. i did it myself better than this salon could have. i'm sure of it. I am horrible at explaining what I want to have done and Dave offered to do a consultation before our appointment as I had mentioned I was getting married in a week. He was so communicative prior to our appointment that when I went into the appointment I was feeling so confident in what we had talked about and I could not be more pleased with how everything turned out. I came into our appointment a sorry state with dry frizzy and unevenly cut hair with weird roots and multiple bands of color and Dave took his time, explained to me what he was doing and WHY. Overall, I got what I needed done and was happy with the end product. I got a little lost in the multi-salon building and called that I would be about 5 late. The owner was not in his studio, which is at the front so I shouldn't have gotten lost, but I also didn't see a male in the salon and thought maybe I was at the wrong studio. He saw my thick hair, even though I scheduled for a thick hair cut, and told his apprentice to cut corners and made many microaggressive comments about how long my hair would take complaining that I came late and have long thick hair and it's going to take forever to do and...aren't I paying you for a service? I almost got up and left but knew I needed a haircut after 2 years without a professional cut and I had maternity photos the next day so... It was a descent price and did look good in the end although the owner and the apprentice blow dried and used a straightening iron saying it wasn't possible to blowout my hair when other stylists have blown out my hair with a round brush making it wavy instead of stick straight. It's not their fault they weren't trained to handle textured hair but it is their responsibility to learn how to be culturally sensitive. I have had this problem with many stylists and it seems like a systemic training issue. It's sucks that the curly hair salons are so few in Phoenix that they get booked out months in advance. Stylists, please get training in how to manage thick, wavy/curly hair. read more

Cannot recommend this studio and Michael enough! I had been going to the same hairdresser my whole life but needed to make a change because I was not happy with the color or health of my hair. I called the studio to see if they had any availability for a much needed haircut and highlights and thankfully they did! Michael was so kind and patient and answered all of my questions. I wanted to keep my hair healthy without cutting too much off and going lighter (something I thought was impossible but Michael went above and beyond). The staff was extremely professional, kind, and made me feel at home. This review is going to be a little bit different because I went in to get something done and ultimately was unable to have it done. My hair is thick and almost down to my butt. I setup an appointment online with Gina to have my thick hair highlighted and cut. In the notes section I let her know I had my hair bleached about 1 year ago (different place) and it went really bad. I also let her know that since then I had been using Clairol Natural Instincts 28 day box dye. So, I got to my appointment and immediately Gina let me know that since I had previously had my hair bleached and was using box dye, the integrity of my hair might not be able to handle bleach. She suggested we do a test strand first to see what we would be working with. The test strand turned out bad. The top and most of the middle did great but the bottom 6 inches turned into a rubber stringy mess. I was not willing to cut 6 inches of my hair off so Gina told me that she would not bleach my hair. She explained every step to me. She gave me options. She took the time to tell me what steps I needed to take in order to get my hair to where it could be bleached. The appointment went from a $350+ potential for Gina to $80 for a haircut/wash/blow dry appointment. Not once did she treat me like she was loosing out on money or that I was taking too much of her time. Was I bummed that I couldn't get my hair bleached? Of course. BUT Gina took the time to show me what would happen if we did and explained my options. I will be taking the steps she outlined. I will get my hair to a healthy point where it can be bleached and I will be coming back to Gina to have it done because I know she is going to do what is best for the integrity of my hair. This is 100% a salon that cares about their customers hair. Also, my haircut was awesome! Gina gives the BEST scalp massage and I would go back just to have her wash my hair. She listened to what I wanted for my haircut, gave her professional opinion where needed, and made sure that I was happy every step of the way. Go to this salon. You will not find a better environment, better quality of work, better staff, or better customer service. Thank you, Gina! read more
