Warning: Proceed with caution. I want to make it clear that the stylists here were overall super nice and trying their best, but the salon owner is an absolute gaslighter who refuses to take accountability. As a first-time client getting my hair professionally colored, I explicitly informed the stylist, about a small spot of dry, sensitive skin on my neck and asked multiple times during consultation if bleach was safe. She repeatedly assured me it was fine, but failed to take proper safety or sectioning precautions, resulting in a chemical burn on my neck. I allowed my skin two full months to completely heal before returning for a second appointment with a different stylist to give them a fair chance. While she protected my neck this time, she botched the technical color application, leaving me with severe "hot roots." I brought this to management's attention and returned for a second correction appointment with her, but the results remained defective once the temporary toner washed out, leaving me with still hot roots. She did protect the area both times. When I requested a full refund after three separate failed visits and a physical injury, the owner became hostile and unprofessional. He offered either a 50% refund or a 4th overall attempt, refusing a full refund. Instead of taking accountability, he blamed my natural hair color for being "too dark," complained about the cost of product used to fix their own mistakes, attempted to self-diagnose my skin condition to excuse the initial burn, and falsely accused me of having a friend leave a review. Furthermore, when I told him I was filing a report, he snapped and accused me of "threatening" him. Informing a business owner that you are contacting a regulatory board is a notice of accountability, not a threat. I do not need anyone to write a review on my behalf because I am perfectly capable of standing up for myself. I paid about $420 (including tip and products) for a color and cut with Joel, and unfortunately left with brassy roots, harsh lines, uneven blending, and hair that was overly thinned. After following the salon's advice to use purple shampoo and wait, the issues remained. Multiple professional stylists have since confirmed that corrective work is needed. When I asked for a refund because I no longer felt comfortable having Joel fix my hair, it was denied. I was also told my correction appointment had been held for a month, which was not my understanding of what had happened. I tried to resolve this directly with the salon before leaving a review, but was disappointed with both the service and the way my concerns were handled. If I could give this business zero, that's what I would do. Here is my review and issue I have with Jo-el the owner of Salon Jo-el, 4118 E. Indian School Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85018. I read the reviews on the Salon before booking a pretty drastic haircut change. Joel Palmer is the owner and has done here for 35 years. He is the one that did my hair cut on August 14, 2026. What I asked for by showing him a photo and what I ended up with are two different very different things. As you will see the blonde haircut in a screenshot is what I asked for and a picture of what I actually ended up with. it shows my long hair before, and after. There's only pretty much one defined layer at the bottom of my earlobe nothing above that. I ended up with a mullet, there are no layers above the one layer he used products and I purchased two. No matter how much product I use it will never look good or like what I asked for. He posted the video on his website and text them to me as well. I was beyond disappointed. I looked at the comments that were made, absolutely awful, horrible, looked better before he started... I only wish I screenshot those. I sent Joel a text, which I have a screenshot of and asked him if I could come back and have him fix it at no charge. Attached is a screenshot of his response, nothing to fix and I could come in and have him show me how to style it again. That is not acceptable. Come to find out after I messaged him. He deleted seven of the bad comments from people and now only five remain. You can also see on the side that originally there were 12 comments. How disgusting and wrong two of the five that are left on the site are in a different language, and obviously he did not translate them or otherwise those would've been removed too. They said nothing like the picture of the cut I wanted, not like the model. I've included a screenshot where you can see the counts and that there were 12 originally I held off on my review until I contacted him. Since I did contact him and received his response, which was totally unacceptable, he takes no accountability or ownership of his mistake. I want people to know what I went through so that they don't encounter the same results. Now I have to pay someone else to try to fix this after spending $206.24 for the cut two products and a tip I regret. My hair was way better before I went there. read more

If I could give zero stars I would. I went in for a color correction and an all over dye. I had a single round of light brown box dye on my hair and prior to that I had not had anything done to my hair for over a year and a half. I wanted copper brown, honey brown, or medium brown on my hair. During the consult the stylist Rachel did not express that more than one appointment would be needed nor did she express that she was incapable of achieving the desired results. By the time I left the salon it was dark out so I was not able to see what the result was. I woke the next morning to several different colors of red in my hair and a very dark band left which the stylist claimed she had blended out. I expressed at the initial appointment that I did not want dark hair. The whole underneath of my hair is a completely different color than my hot roots and dark band. They made me an appointment for the following day to correct the situation. Upon arrival the stylist did not have a good attitude and said she could do "low lights" to blend the color however she claimed the day prior that the exact method was used however it had no effect on the end result. I asked why a base color was not applied to the blonde of my hair before depositing the color in order to try to balance the hair out with the rest of it. The owner and the stylist recommended dark all over which I stated before any processing was done that I absolutely did not want that. The stylist should have known her scope of practice and remained inside of it. The owner then only gave me a partial refund because the stylist "spent all that time on my hair" even though all she did was damage and ruin my hair. He stated that I am too particular about my hair, which any woman would be if they grew their hair for 13 years. The owner also stated that even though it looks bad in the sunlight that people don't spend most of their time outside, everything seemed to be poor excuses for poor execution and blame being shifted read more

I don't have much free time these days to get out of the house for things like a haircut. But it has been 6 months and the weather has been so hot that I needed one badly! I had some free time on a Sunday, but my usual salon didn't have any availability!! I looked around for other salons that are open on Sundays and found Salon Jo-el. This is the 2nd time I visited this salon. Josie was my hair stylist and was fantastic the first time. She gave me some great blond highlights and the cut was great. The salon isn't much to look at, as it is very basic. They offer water in a cup and coffee (horrible instant coffee) while you are there. If the stylist is good, I can tolerate dive spots to get my hair done correctly. This time Josie failed terribly. I had a touch up base color to cover my graying hair and a trim. Josie disappeared after she put the color on my hair. I sat in the chair for an hour waiting on her to return. I had to interrupt a conversation that two of the sylists were having to ask somebody to track down Josie to see if she was going to return to finish my hair. They called her but she didn't answer. I sat a little longer and another stylist had to wash my hair but didn't know what to do after that and relied on me to answer his questions. Josie finally showed back up in the middle of the hair wash. Not concerned at all that she was gone for an hour and 15 minutes. My color was to process for 45 minutes. She cut my hair in a hurry. One side of my hair has a piece that was chopped so short. It doesn't blend at all! It was a horrible cut and the color is horrible! My hair is all brown (ugly brown) all highlights are gone. I thought I could work with the color and the cut so didn't say much while I was there. As I got ready today for a very important event, I noticed that the cut was horrible and choppy. Hello...I am a 50+ lady who moved to Phoenix 3 years ago and have spent time doing my research re: all the hair salons in Phoenix. For the last 2 weeks, I have called every salon in downtown & phoenix, arcadia, glen-dale that was a 4.7 or higher trying to get an appointment to cut my hair. Some wanted to book me for September or in the middle of the work week. Yesterday, I spent all morning driving around trying to find anyone who would take a walk in. Still nothing. As a self-proclaimed "Hairdresserphobic", I must admit I hadn't cut my locks in over a decade. Being so attached to my hair and having zero good haircuts in my 31 years of life, rendered me riddled with anxiety thinking I would be subjected to a rushed hairstylist in a bad mood who didn't care or listen to my requests and left me with a Stooge haircut, like all my previous memories! I booked with this salon online as a last minute decision to get an all over color. I didn't review pricing because All hair is different and I thought this would be discussed in shop. The appointment was for 5:15 but they were running behind. I didn't mind waiting, initially. Then we discussed colors and had settled on a chestnut color with undertones of red in the violet spectrum. I explained how my hair takes to color really fast. It wouldn't need to sit very long. The color came out very vibrant. It came out very red. I Still didn't complain. I was charged 65$ and even left a tip for the stylist. Later I get a call saying they undercharged me. That's now 3 strikes. They didn't even offer to fix the color. They didn't offer to give a discount. Rather they made it about them. He talked to me about how the pricing was online and that holding them hostage by mentioning i would give them a bad review over an honest mistake, was unfair. I'm not a person who leaves reviews of any kind. And I even left a tip as a courtesy. And to be honest, I didn't even have to call back to settle the difference. But I did. But the fact that they wouldn't hold themselves accountable on any front is unprofessional. They didn't apologize, even though they were late, gave me the wrong color, and charged the wrong amount on my card. And didn't offer any sort of restitution. Then spoke to me like I was being unreasonable. I wouldn't recommend this salon. The stylist was friendly. And the color is pretty.
