I usually get annoyed with hair dressers who chop off all my hair because they're lazy and because they try to make me talk (usually to sell themselves...). Minolo had an authentic, real and empathetic personality that I have never encountered in this business. He kept the length of my hair so well and it looks even better. I have never been happier walking out of a salon. Some extra feedback: I live 5hrs away in Brooklyn, NY and stayed upstate for the weekend (as I usually do every few months). I found this place by chance on my way to Guitar Center. I have a few Paul Mitchell products and I like them over the several I've tried (esp. DISHONEST AND UNTRUSTWORTHY:…read more The owner was not forthcoming and honest when I spoke with her about coming to her studio. I had told her that I was interested in coming to her studio for a specific brand of hair color, and I also asked if she would wear a mask. Since she agreed to wear a mask, and she offered the hair color I wanted, so I became her client and have seen her three times. She did not follow through on both areas. She emailed all of her clients a few weeks ago and said she was dropping all of her products and was going with a one product instead. She did not explain why or what was in the product, etc. I figured I'd give it a try since my hair appointment was in a few weeks, and she was very particular about the products she used. I had my appointment scheduled for today. She emailed me a couple of days ago to make sure I had received her email about changing products. I told her I was still planning on coming and would like to hear more about the product, why she chose it, etc. when I came to see her to have my hair done. She then proceeded to provide reasons why she chose to change, which included that she had started to transition prior to the pandemic and waited because of the ammonia in the product and masking (she said it's problematic with the ammonia). She had not said anything about this previously. She had not said anything about mask issues prior to this, or that the new product contained ammonia. Again, this is TWO days before my appointment. When I said that I'd be wearing a mask and would like her to, she said she wasn't going to. She left it up to me about whether or not I wanted to continue with her. I replied that I found a solution that would work (she did not have to do anything or wear a mask). She then informed me this morning (hours before my appointment) that she couldn't accomodate my needs, etc. There were no negative exchanges between us, but she decided that it wouldn't work. I find her behavior to be dishonest and disconcerting. When she took me on as a client, she knew she was going to transition out of my hair color and not wear masks, but did not tell me. She also said she would wear a mask but reneged on that promise. She waited to the last minute to essentially communicate HER concerns about me coming with her new use of the product. I was flexible to accomodate my needs with these new changes; she was not. I have my birthday next week and planned concerts to attend, etc.. She left me hanging in a BIG way. Her treatment of me was very unprofessional. Warning: she is not trustworthy and is unprofessional in handling important issues. I recommend going somehere else.

Its fearless leader and his team of stylists play with scissors for the shear fun of it, and are the ride-or-dyes you and your hair have been looking for. Nestled into the ground floor of Troy's beautiful Proctor's Theater building on 4th Street, with its highly decorative front facade of brick and marble covered in glazed terra-cotta, it's no surprise to discover that the salon's insides match its outsides. The interior is seriously sophisticated, with light and dark grey walls serving as the perfect contrast against the large floor-to-ceiling windows and big, beautiful green plants that call the bright window seats home. The main floor is a neat little grid of beautiful styling stations, and mirrors, plenty of mirrors - even full wall-length mirrors - except instead of feeling like you're trapped in a funhouse, you're lost at Barney's, and loving it. A fun feature I really loved: each stylist's station is equipped with a mini Husky or Stanley branded tool chest on wheels, including a massive tool chest at the makeup bar. So like, not only does it add a cool masculine feel to the chic space, but I love the message that sends to clients, like, "Yeah, we work with tools, too!" Nice flex, guys. The best seat in the house, however, is in Christopher Brian's chair. I selected Salon 109 on a whim, due to its proximity to work and my desperation to fix a terrible dye job I received at a discount hair salon chain. I do not have a "before" picture, as the dye job decimated my self-esteem. When I walked in, the receptionist immediately greeted me with a smile. I asked for a consult with a stylist, and within minutes my hair hero, Justin Maxwell, stood before me with a smile and a number of suggestions to fix my mutilated hair. I was too afraid to risk another bad dye job, but Justin was very understanding and instead gave me an extremely flattering cut that distracted people from the color! He gave me some self-esteem back, and I scheduled my next appointment with him right away. People never stopped commenting on my great cut, until today when he changed my life! Today I was brave enough to try a dye job! Justin used the balayage technique to transform my hair, and he was extremely patient and supportive when I panicked during the process. I was so traumatized by my previous dye job that I started to panic halfway through the balayage. Justin talked me down off the ledge and vowed to remedy things if I was not pleased with the end result. I was still too scared to look in the mirror until he was finished, but when I did I was in shock- my nightmarish clown color was gone and my self-esteem was back! I have received so many compliments on my hair already, including one from a stylist at a different salon! My hair looks amazing- the color perfectly compliments my skin, and the highlights are blended so smoothly I look like I belong in a hair magazine! I should note that I have mixed, easily-damaged hair, and the processing today was so gentle! I highly recommend Justin Maxwell and Salon 109, and I am so grateful for his kindness and patience and amazing skill set! read more

Since this was my first time here, I was nervous because I am always nervous to try a new salon/stylist. Ashley from Salon 109 made all my anxiety go away! I wasn't 100% sure what I wanted to do with my hair but had an idea (and no pictures - which usually is not a good idea). Together, Ashley and I were able to consult each other about what would be best for my hair. They have tons of hair magazines that I was able to convey what I wanted to get done to my hair. With my basic idea and Ashley's knowledge in hair coloring and cutting, let me tell you - I look smoking hot!! Walking out of the Salon 109, just down the street to the bakery, I had several people walk up to me and actually comment on how nice my hair looked! Everyone loves my new hair, thanks to Ashley and Salon 109! And one last thing, they will take care of you! Even if it is from getting you a magazine or a drink, they are really concerned about making you feel comfortable as possible. The only downside (which is minor as you can see from above), is that the parking is metered. If you can take a bus in or get a ride that would be the best way to get there. Overall, I am telling everyone about Salon 109 and already made an appointment to go back to see Ashley! read more

Made an account purely to review Salon 109. The employees were kind and relatively professional. However, I left having spent more than I have ever been charged for a gel manicure and with nails that look worse than when I have spent $20 less on the same service elsewhere. I would not have any problem with the pricing if the final result was a quality manicure. From the moment I left my appointment, my nails have been uneven, with the manicurist having let gel pool on certain parts of my nail. I could have excused this as it wasn't too noticeable, but it has been less than a week since my manicure and the tips of my nails are already looking worn on multiple nails. Overall, will not be returning and would certainly not recommend Salon 109 for any type of nail service. ----Update---- I will say, after posting this review that Mary reached out on behalf of Salon 109 to apologize and offered to book me for an appointment to re-do my manicure. While I will not be taking them up on the offer, the situation was handled quite professionally. read more

First, I had a great pedicure from Toni. Not only was it wonderfully relaxing, but she removed callous build up and took care of my almost troublesome nails. A real pro treatment, complete with complementary wine (or other soft drinks/coffee if I had desired). She has the very new Shatter polishes from OPI. My toes look so good I've even gotten complements from hot-rod enthusiast who love the paint job!!! Josephine gave my hair quite a chop (exactly what I wanted). I showed her a few ideas in pictures, and she totally understood what I was going for, and pulled it off perfectly, even with my very fine/wavy hair! She took care of my eyebrows too. She cleaned them up, and they looked beautiful and very natural, not over stylized (again, what I was looking for). She recommended product which I totally love!!! I am totally going back for another pedicure and a trim on the hair. Highly recommended, totally professional, clean, and friendly!!!! read more

I recently had a fantastic cut and color experience with David at Salon 109. As a new client, David took time with me initially to discuss what I was looking for in terms of my color. We went over several options, and the owner, Mary, even came over to introduce herself and make recommendations about how to get a great result. Both Mary and David were friendly and very knowledgeable, and I ultimately received a fantastic result and great, dimensional color. David then discussed what I wanted for my cut, and he did just as I requested. Overall, I had a great experience for a great price (and I enjoyed getting to know David throughout my visit!). I will definitely return to David at Salon 109 for my future cuts/colors. read more

Salon 109 - have no doubt about getting a mani/pedi here. I have been a lot of places in this area, and other areas. You will not get a better pedicure ANYWHERE, and ou will not get a better mani anywhere, either. Toni DiPalma is GIFTED and you owe it to yourself to give her a chance. Also, for hair - Karen Gregware is amazing. I've never had a stylist who was intuitive about hair, and was dead on mixing color and applying highlights. When you visit this salon, you are treated as a guest, but with that touch of familiarity that makes you feel a part of things. It's super clean, state of the art, and welcoming. It is very rare to get a massage that actually relaxes and energizes while hitting all of the problem/tension spots. Even more rare is finding a skilled professional who loves what he does and KNOWS what to do. John Mitchell is FANTASTIC. Thanks to him, I left feeling calm, fresh and excited to attack the insanity of the holidays & final exams. After most massages, I feel "ehh", yet this experience was perfection. It was nice and I was happy. I sent my daughter over for a manicure and she was charged $ 80.00 for a gel manicure. Included in this fee, is supposed to be a hand massage, which my daughter did NOT get. Unfortunately, one of the nails (on this regarded manicure-by Joan) came off either that same day or the next day. My daughter was very upset and called for an appointment to have the nail fixed. She was given an appointment with the woman who specializes in nails and this woman fixed her nail. The manicurist told my daughter that more of the nails were going to fall and she never should have had a gel manicure broker nails are too thin. My daughter was still upset because she paid $ 80.00 for what appeared to be a substandard manicure and called the salon again to complain-she felt she should not have been charged the full 80 dollars. She was told the owner would give her a call to discuss her concerns. This never happened-no one called her. I went back a few weeks later to get my hair done and I did not ask for a manicure. The hairdresser kept making comments about how great her manicures are. She must have given me this message 4-5 times. I didn't respond as it was obvious that she felt like she was right. Apparently, she is in the habit of giving gel manicures to people who shouldn't have them, not accepting any responsibility for a manicure that started falling apart within 24 hours all for the price of 80 dollars. No, I decided to write this review given the response of the hairdresser and the lack of response by the owner. Rather arrogant and egregious behaviour by both.
