Made the 45min drive to Albany after reading positive reviews on yelp. Pleasant setting, looked clean & professional. Arrived on time 11:30am for haircut, mani, pedi. Jan got me started on pedi & mani with diligent young lady- was great! By 1:12pm Jan was finally ready to cut my hair after shampooing, $15 eyebrow wax that she talked me into, & finally voila, a $55 10-min haircut with no layers nor shape. I asked for side bangs 3 times & each time was met with resistance. "I don't want to cut too short" I gave up after the third ask. Conversation was also intrusive - where do you live? What's your job? What's your ethnicity? This is supposed to be a relaxing experience, not an interrogation. Total bill $145. Will not be going back for sure. read more

I'm very very picky about my hair color looking natural but expensive but not done at all...if that makes any sense, and Junko nailed it. Had a really bad experience, asked for chest, stomach, and, entire back wax. Service took 3 and half hours, and I still have stray hairs on my chest, stomach and back. For reference, this was my second time getting the same areas waxed. The first place I went to took an hour and I was significantly happier with their service. The tech was new which isn't the end of the world but asking for a service that took almost half a work day is absolutely ridiculous. Maybe when the tech gets into a routine that works best for them maybe there'll be a smoother service. However, I don't think I'll be going back anytime soon for any service. read more

Me and my friend went for a manicure and a beard trim. In my case, the girl spent 20 minutes applying an uneven coat thinking it'll even out. After drying it, she agreed that the nail polish was probably expired. Since I had run out of time, we ended up doing just a standard nail coat which costs 25 dollars. My friend got his beard trimmed which was quick and fine. There are similar services offered at more reasonable rates nearby. read more

Oh I want to give this salon more stars but I absolutely can't considering how my hair turned out. I want to start off by saying Mary, the owner, is a kind soul. Extremely nice as was everyone that worked there. However, niceness only goes so far with haircuts and color. Asked for a specific kind of color and ended up with a disaster. I was able to get my money back, thank God, but ended up having to get another inch cut off my hair and a whole new dye job done at a different salon. The only way to correct my color was to get an all over dark color which was completely opposite of why I went to Mary in the first place. I'm giving this place 2 stars for the great customer service, otherwise it'd be negative 4 for the frustration and tears. To reply to the rebuttal, it doesn't matter how I left the salon. What I left with is what was in the picture. There was nothing more done to it than toner. Please don't try to cover for the bad work that you did. It doesn't matter how I came in or left. This is my follow up to my original review. I was messaged on yelp by the salon owner she originally apologized for my horrible haircut and offered me a refund and a complimentary haircut. To as she put it " instill my faith " back in the capability of her Salon. At first I agreed to a second haircut but then I became uneasy about it and decided against it. I mean my hair looks horrible and I have tried every which way to style it and cannot Jan butchered my hair I can't even tuck a strand behind my ears because she chopped it off. Anyway I decided I rather receive a refund and drive back NYC from Schenectady than take another chance. The Salon owner of course DID NOT give me a refund. Claimed she would call me about and did not. I'm posting because the absolute only reason I took a chance on this Salon was because of a review I had read about " JAN " from another customer like myself seeking a new salon after moving. She DID NOT LISTEN to what I asked for, she barely glanced at my reference photos and now the owner has lied to me about her business practices. So if you care about your locks and want a stylist and Salon that does too. DO NOT COME TO Salon 109. Obviously anything they say, they CANNOT GARANTEE. The cut was mediocre, but the main issue was the stylist and receptionist were rude as heck and I would never recommend this place to anyone. Ashley was awesome when I told her I wanted to go gray and she highlighted my hair in such a way that you could barely see the line between my previously colored hair and the natural roots as they grew out. I'm fully gray now and Ashley always gives me a great cut that isn't fussy but looks fantastic . She's super accurate and takes her time, making sure that I'm getting what I expect. read more

Moving to a new city presents a host of problems. Finding the best lunch spots, the cheapest happy hour, and of course a place to get your hair cut. After some searching around, I've finally found a place that fit all of my needs: good quality, good price and walking distance from my office. Salon 109 on State Street in Albany offers many services that I don't use so I can't comment on them. However, I can say that Karen does a great job cutting my hair. She's friendly and non-judgmental, which is nice; she doesn't try to convince me that I need to start coloring my graying hair! A woman that I work with has started going there too and she really likes Karen, so it's not just a guy's point of view on this one. The shop is smartly decorated without trying too hard. They use Paul Mitchell products, but don't push them on you like many salons. These guys are the real deal, and right in your backyard. I recommend trying them out. read more

I was really looking forward to my appointment since the reviews were great and the prices were SO reasonable. It's in downtown Albany, so there is a lot of metered street parking.The people here are very friendly and talkative, which made it fun experience... However, I asked for a couple inches off with no layers, but that was not what I got at all. It didn't look too bad at the salon, but once I got home I saw choppy and uneven layers everywhere. I was so upset, and my hair looked like a disaster for months. I went to get a haircut recently, and the hairdresser asked who cut my hair cause it still looked bad. There were even parts of my hair that were so uneven that I had to come home to make it look slightly better. I wouldn't recommend this place even for the low price.. read more

I'm usually skeptical to call Salons that have massages as I usually feel that they cater only to women. But I'm glad that I called them and John the massage therapist answered the phone and got an appointment with him for the same day, guess I was lucky. The massage was amazing, I say this because the massages that I've got before were kind of mechanical where the therapist would do some basic stuff but you know it wasn't satisfying. John the massage therapist was great because he took his time and his massage was specific for my pain areas and checked with me to ensure that it felt comfortable and good. He also explained why it was hurting and what to do to make it go away, something many don't do. All in all it was a great massage and I'm surely going back here when I need one. Went to Salon 109 for the first time today and I could not have asked for a better experience. I showed up a bit early and everyone was so friendly and sweet. I sat down and wait since I had arrived a bit early and the atmosphere was so warm and welcoming. David cut my hair and he was great. He understood exactly what I wanted -- which was just a trim to get my dead and split ends gone -- and unlike most other hair dressers I've been to, he said he would cut off an inch and actually only cut off an inch! I've been here twice - once for a facial and eyebrow wax with Mary, and then again for a Shellac mani/pedi with Toni. The women at the front desk were so warm and helpful. They offered me a drink and got me a desperately needed glass of red wine. Mary did a great job with my skin. We discussed what needs work and she did a bunch of extractions, which were almost painless! I came out with glowing, super soft skin that still feels great 2 weeks later. Toni gave me best manicure/pedicure I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. She let me talk on and on about my wedding with a sympathetic ear and laughed at all my jokes, all while refilling my wine AND giving me an amazing mani/pedi! My nails looked perfect for my wedding. I will not go anywhere else now that I found her. The only drawback is it can be tough to find parking on State St. but it's worth it. read more

My sister hired someone to do hair for her wedding but I found out last minute that it needed to be blown out first, with two kids, a toddler, and the fact that I just had flown in from CA left me no time to do it myself. Keep in mind I have very long and extremely thick hair. I called a few salons that were unable to fit me in but then I called Salon 109 and Justin said he had no room but did me a solid and squeezed me in during his break.
