    Kids haircut (curly hair)

As always Ashley does and amazing job ... first haircut and a new haircut done beautifully. Thank you Ashley!

    Melissa G.

I had my first visit to Pixie Salon in Albany today and it was wonderful. I had a Ouidad cut (a curly hair specialty) by Ashley, and I am thrilled with the result. The salon is tastefully decorated and a delightful atmosphere. The staff greeted me warmly and were very accommodating. Ashley, the stylist who'd been recommended to me, could not have been sweeter. She was just lovely. She took time and care to understand what I wanted, make thoughtful suggestions, and be considerate of my styling preferences. I walked out feeling great and loving my haircut. I am very glad that a friend recommended Pixie - I am expecting that this is the beginning of a great hair relationship! ;)

Ouidad cut by Ashely was amazing!! Not only is she a fabulous person but she's a mastermind with hair!!

I go to Ashley regularly, but I've also seen Bob and Maura and had great experiences with them as well.

DISHONEST AND UNTRUSTWORTHY:…read more The owner was not forthcoming and honest when I spoke with her about coming to her studio. I had told her that I was interested in coming to her studio for a specific brand of hair color, and I also asked if she would wear a mask. Since she agreed to wear a mask, and she offered the hair color I wanted, so I became her client and have seen her three times. She did not follow through on both areas. She emailed all of her clients a few weeks ago and said she was dropping all of her products and was going with a one product instead. She did not explain why or what was in the product, etc. I figured I'd give it a try since my hair appointment was in a few weeks, and she was very particular about the products she used. I had my appointment scheduled for today. She emailed me a couple of days ago to make sure I had received her email about changing products. I told her I was still planning on coming and would like to hear more about the product, why she chose it, etc. when I came to see her to have my hair done. She then proceeded to provide reasons why she chose to change, which included that she had started to transition prior to the pandemic and waited because of the ammonia in the product and masking (she said it's problematic with the ammonia). She had not said anything about this previously. She had not said anything about mask issues prior to this, or that the new product contained ammonia. Again, this is TWO days before my appointment. When I said that I'd be wearing a mask and would like her to, she said she wasn't going to. She left it up to me about whether or not I wanted to continue with her. I replied that I found a solution that would work (she did not have to do anything or wear a mask). She then informed me this morning (hours before my appointment) that she couldn't accomodate my needs, etc. There were no negative exchanges between us, but she decided that it wouldn't work. I find her behavior to be dishonest and disconcerting. When she took me on as a client, she knew she was going to transition out of my hair color and not wear masks, but did not tell me. She also said she would wear a mask but reneged on that promise. She waited to the last minute to essentially communicate HER concerns about me coming with her new use of the product. I was flexible to accomodate my needs with these new changes; she was not. I have my birthday next week and planned concerts to attend, etc.. She left me hanging in a BIG way. Her treatment of me was very unprofessional. Warning: she is not trustworthy and is unprofessional in handling important issues. I recommend going somehere else.

I used to love Emily, but I haven't found someone who can consistently give a good haircut since…read moreEmily left before COVID. I have often left The Lift with hair cut so unevenly that I have had to even it out myself at home. My son just got his hair cut again after his last one there, and the new hairdresser pointed out that there was a huge difference in length between the R and L side over his ears. Sadly, after a decade as a loyal customer,I won't be returning to The Lift.

Heartbroken Bride - A Cautionary Tale for Anyone with Textured Hair…read more On October 4, 2024, I had my hair done at The Lift Salon by Justin, a stylist I had previously trusted. As a South Asian woman with thick, coarse hair, I made it very clear that this appointment was for my wedding day. What should've been a joyful, exciting experience turned into a months-long nightmare -- one I'm still dealing with in June 2025. The salon is very much a white-centered space, and while that shouldn't matter, it clearly did. Just because I have thick hair does not mean it's okay to bleach it to the lightest color possible without any real conversation about the risks involved. As a stylist, it is your responsibility to inform your client of potential damage -- especially when working with textured or ethnic hair. Had I known my hair would end up gummy, stringy, and permanently compromised, I would've never agreed to this. I even voiced concern during the appointment when I noticed the gummy texture. Justin brushed it off and told me it would feel like that for "just two days." I trusted him -- big mistake. After the first wash, my hair was a sticky, breaking mess. It was completely ruined. Since then, I've spent months trying to repair it, and I'm still not even close. When I reached out to the owner, Cristol, hoping for accountability and understanding, I was met with nothing but ego, gaslighting, and attitude. Her exact words were: "But you loved your hair and walked out with a smile." I told her: "I didn't even realize how damaged it was at the time -- check your cameras, I was trying to bring it up to Justin during the service." Instead of listening, she cut me off and said, "I will not have you come back into the salon. I'll just refund you. You can go to my friend, Carve Beauty, to get your treatments done." I was in tears. I had just paid $600 for a service that destroyed my hair and left me completely heartbroken -- and she had the audacity to ban me? As if I'd ever want to go back. You couldn't even pay me to return. Update - End of June 2025 This photo shows the current condition of my hair -- still gummy, breaking, and fragile despite everything I've done to try and fix it. Funny enough, I didn't find Carve Beauty on my own. Cristol -- in the middle of kicking me out of her salon -- actually recommended I go there. The irony? Carve turned out to be everything The Lift is not. At Carve, Tina, one of the owners, was professional, kind, and truly empathetic. When I told her what had happened, she was genuinely appalled. I ended up doing around six intensive treatments at Carve and purchased their molecular repair treatment to continue care at home. And still, after all that, I'm left with long-term damage. If you want a salon that will actually listen, respect you, and treat your hair with real care and knowledge, I cannot recommend Carve Beauty enough. Go to Tina for anything major or corrective -- she's amazing. And for regular styling, ask for Abby -- she's just as talented and sweet. Skip the arrogance. Skip the gaslighting. Skip the damage. Go where your hair and your voice are respected -- go to Carve.

I'm from NYC and I've been to a bunch of "fancy spas" in my life. I have to say the best facial…read moreI've ever had is from Skin Forensics with Katerina. I first went here when I was in college in Albany and now I still travel back upstate specifically for the purpose of seeing Katerina. Most spas focus on quick results and making someone look "glowing" when they walk out the door (instant gratification = happy customer and better tip) rather than long-term, lasting results. I recently had a $400+ oxygen facial from a spa in Vegas but the effects only lasted 4 days and then everything went back to normal. Please don't waste your money on fancy treatments at some of these other places that don't last long. With Katerina's facials, she applies a scientific approach and I've noticed a real and easily noticeable long-term improvement in the quality of my skin. My pores have decreased in size, I have reduced outbreaks. Plus, Katerina is able to give personalized advice regarding nutrition, what products to use, and how to use them. She understands that everyone's skin is different, so she does not apply a one-size-fits-all approach. In summary. at Skin Forensics, Katerina focuses on long term outcomes and I really think she's brilliant at what she does. So happy I found this skin care expert! HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend meeting with her. It has been a game changer for me.

I had a really disappointing experience at Skin Forensics…read more I came in during early pregnancy after having already experienced back to back miscarriages, and my skin was in terrible shape. I explained that I believed I was dealing with hormonal acne, but the owner repeatedly assured me I was wrong. Instead, she diagnosed me with dermatitis and insisted that I was likely having an allergic reaction to my laundry detergent. She recommended an oil-based cleanser that she had formulated herself, which I personally believe made my skin significantly worse, and I also spent money replacing all of my laundry detergent based on her advice. Throughout the appointment, I felt unheard and dismissed. After my skin continued to worsen, I later saw a dermatologist, who confirmed my suspicion that I was, in fact, experiencing hormonal acne. What concerned me most, however, was that despite knowing I was pregnant, she encouraged me to take cod liver oil supplements, saying the high vitamin A content would be beneficial. I later learned that excessive preformed vitamin A during pregnancy can increase the risk of birth defects, and I was incredibly relieved that I chose not to follow that recommendation. I understand that everyone's experience may be different, but based on mine, I would encourage anyone--especially if you're pregnant--to be cautious and to discuss any skincare or supplement recommendations with your OB or healthcare provider before taking them.
