WAY TOO expensive for the service I received!!! I will not return to JP Salon due to the ridiculous prices! I had a short bob to begin with, not long hair. I had color, 2/3 highlights, and a cut with Kristina who I was told was a Level 3 stylist. Kristina was very nice and she tried to deliver. But my bill came to $422!! I have never, EVER paid that much and been SO disappointed in my hair!!! I can't really see the highlights and it is much too short. I go to make an appointment for a haircut and receive a message that I have a $310 balance for a no-show appointment - mind you the appointment was cancelled. This is a gross shake down for additional money. Will never return here. And highly discourage anyone who's going to shake down for a cancelled appointment from 8months ago. read more

Jean Paul is a wonderful salon located within Stuyvesant Plaza. I have been intermittently going here since I was in high school growing up down the road. The salon has gotten a major facelift since I hadn't been back in awhile and it looks amazing! So much more open and welcoming at the lobby entrance, great music, and the wash station is comfortable and clean. I recently went to get a quick blowout with lots of volume and to get my makeup done. Couldn't have been more pleased with their services yet again! Great consistent salon with wonderful women working and stylists who really know their stuff. Will continue to return! read more

As per the second experience going there I felt like I was on a conveyor belt with 20-30 chairs or the typical nail salons in malls. You ask for one style or cut and it doesn't pan out like you expect. But on the other hand I can see why some people love it and that's because you're looking for that typical straight cut hairstyle no style just straight cut and blow dry and or the wave or curls. I don't see anything else different. one of their most senior hairdresser cuts layers with a straight razor not scissors and you come out looking like you've been chopped up with a dull knife . As far as the vibe and presentation of the salon is nice and they're pleasant but the girls look like they're 16-20 yrs old that just came out of beauty school too young and no experience.. so good luck ladies read more

(I was kinda lost when she left but happy for her pursuing her dreams). Which brings me to the present day. Now, I have Siobhan as my hairstylist since 2019. She's very professional and listens to her client, very accommodating. I already moved to the city but I still come here to have my hair done. So if you're looking for a a place to treat yourself, please do check this place out. They have spa, they do mani/pedi of course the salon. They are newly renovated the place is clean. I moved up to Albany from NYC in Aug 2022 where I had the same cut/color stylist for nearly ten years. Color formula in hand, I went to Jean Paul for a curly hair and color consultation, and it seemed like the color would be able to be replicated. First appointment was in September 2022 and the cut and color was perfect. Way more expensive than NYC but pleased with the results. Second appointment was in November 2022 for color only. There was clearly a mistake in how the formula was mixed as I ended up with copper hair, kind of like a mix between a pomegranate and Carrot Top. It truly looked terrible. I went in the following week to see if they could fix. A different stylist put in a toner which tones things down but my hair still looked - and continues to look - pretty bad. In January 2023 I went to a different salon and showed the stylist my formula. She asked me why I went with copper for my last color when that was clearly not in the formula. I explained what happened at Jean Paul, she was clear about the fact that the November formula mix was made incorrectly since that particular recipe wouldn't produce the color that was on my head. I get that we are all human and that mistakes happen, although it is unfortunate when this happens to your hair! What I did not love at the time was being told that the formula was mixed correctly; surely I was imagining things and not remembering the color combo from September; my skin color had changed and that's why the color looked different; the stylist wrote down the formula so there's no way it was mixed incorrectly. In other words, the issue was in my head. Ps I asked for a refund and the salon said no. So that was $137 plus tips to end up looking like a dragonfruit. read more

Salon experience is very subjective and personal from one person to another. Initially, I was worried to go to this salon due to the negative reviews. However, I took a courage to go there because of Ashley's fine works. She's the one that makes me believe that this salon is not as bad as the reviews given. I had a great experience in this salon. I found Ashley from Jean-Paul Salon's website. We matched through "find your stylish". I started checking out her Instagram. I came across the pic of her client's hair. Exactly showing the layers technique she has. This was why I had the courage to go to Jean-Paul. I just got my haircut today with Ashley. She's really good at what she does. She knows what kind of haircut I want. I'm Asian and my hair is thick and coarse. Some stylish may not understand how to treat my hair. That's why I was hesistant at first. But, Ashley knows what I want and she cut my hair as I ask. She knows how to create high layers and using razors. Some stylish, again, may not know how to use razor. I am glad that she is knowledgeable. This salon is probably expensive to many, but you got quality out of it, at least for hair cut. I can't say anything about color/balayage/other things. But definitely get your haircut here. Also, if you are a kerastase fan, go to this salon to get the treatment. ANTI SEMITIC HAIR SALON! BEWARE PROTECT YOURSELF! The "color specialist LOLA" absolutely destroyed my hair. I kept wondering why she would do this to me. My hair was so many different colors that it took them 6 hours to try and fix it (they didn't) also I asked for a trim on the ends and my hair was missing 4-6 inches depending on the side. It was so uneven the other hairdressers were appalled. When wondering why their "amazing specialist LOLA" would do this to me. I realized the conversation we had while we were starting my appointment. She asked about my baby and I told her how important my hair was that I grew during pregnancy was to me (which she cut off about 4-6 inches depending on the side) she also asked about my necklace which I explained that we were jewish. She immediately said she needed some water and left to get some. I can only speculate as to what she did but she came back and would barley speak to me then proceeded to absolutely ruin my hair. If I could give negative stars I would. I do not wish to share the pictures as they are humiliating as I had been crying so hard. If anyone wants to see search them on tick tock. While trying to find a reason for why their "color specialist LOLA" would purposefully push me out of the chair with wet hair I was told by a male employee when I went back in for them to "fix" it that she has obviously done it so that I wouldn't see how bad it was. When I talked to multiple managers about this they tried to manipulate and gaslight me into not writing a review and refused to refund me the service which I was told by multiple employees I was grossly over charged for. They charged me just under 500$ for "partial highlights and a light trim". I explained to them that she treated me differently when I explained me baby and that we were Jewish they wouldn't respond or even apologize. They like many others around the world would rather pretend it's not happening then stand up or say they are sorry. My hair looks amazing but the stylist intentionally worked super slow and charged by the hour. she filled up small bowls of bleach, left every ten minutes to refill it and then took her time coming back. She blow dried my hair in itty bitty strands adding on probably another hour. My mom set up the appointment and offered to pay for it expecting it to be around $300-$400 but by the time the appointment was over it was $700 and I had spent the whole day there. Its no wonder she had to charge so much considering I was her only appointment that day. This experience is like no other experience ive had, I love the result but the time and money was not even close to worth it. I'm not a girly girl, so I generally don't like the vibe of most salons. I don't really fit in. BUT...I had a gift certificate and was happy to have found this place as a result. I've now been to Jean Paul (Stuyvesant Plaza) several times and have been very happy with the haircuts. The staff is always super friendly without being phony. The prices are not bad - I haven't had anything fancy done but I'm considering a color at some point. Would love to try the spa if I can find the time. I've never had to wait more than a couple of minutes for my appointment and on a couple of occasions, I was early...and they took me early. Parking is super easy...I love big parking lots. That's a big plus for me. They have a really good selection of the higher-end hair products. Going back for another haircut pretty soon. read more

Tried to become a new client of the salon since I recently moved to the area. Understood with COVID-19 and I being a potential new client, I had to be patient. I gave them more than three strikes, but they are out. Skills for them to improve: listening - I wanted a seasoned stylist and had to ask more than once; commitment - missed my first FaceTime consult, rescheduled to later in the day and stylist couldn't figure out how to FaceTime, so just a verbal conversation; Responsibility & time management- don't cancel an appointment because you're running behind. I did leave two stars rather than one, because the manager returned my call very quickly. She listened to my whole story and offered to remedy the situation. The manager was excellent and that's why I called her before writing this review. I hope this feedback will be taken constructively. read more

I had a men's haircut from this salon. It was by far the worst haircut I've ever received. The staff was extremely disinterested in my business and generally apathetic and unwelcoming. I went to see GiGi for a facial in January and it was absolutely amazing. I left the spa with my skin feeling moisturized and brand new!! It was exactly what I needed during these cold winter months. The worst customer service I have EVER experienced at a high end salon. It started from the moment I was taken back to get my hair washed. The young lady (Keira?) was very rude - never offered to take my coat or offered a coat closet (so I proceeded to carry a winter jacket around on my lap the whole duration of the visit). The hair wash took about 5 minutes in totality. She was so rough my neck and head were bobbing, never asked if the water temperature was OK and was doing it so quickly my face was being splashed by water. Next I was pointed to the chair I needed to go to with my stylist (Lucy). I've honestly never looked around at a salon and seen 0 conversation between the stylists and clients. It was awkward to say the least, but after the terrible first impression I refused to go out of my way to make conversation. After my cut and blow out we're done the male stylist in the next chair looked over at Lucy and said with a confused face, "looks pretty good?" What? On my way out I was planning to restock my Kiehls supply and would have probably spent upwards of $100. I was so mortified and uncomfortable (and sweating after holding my winter coat on my lap the whole time) - I couldn't get out of there fast enough. The only star I'm leaving is because Lucy did do a good job at the cut and blow out, but the whole customer service experience was embarrassing and horrendous. I don't live in the area so no huge loss of business but my cousins (used to) frequent Jean Paul and that business will certainly be lost now. Jean Paul, you have some work to do across your whole salon in regards to customer service. Very embarrassing. read more

This experience was awful, however there are some up sides to this place; the variety of services provided and the receptionists are friendly enough. I called to get my hair colored and they were able to fit me in same day, which I was so thankful for! However, after 20 minutes of waiting they acknowledged my stylist was running late. No problem, I was happy to wait. Finally 30 minutes after my appointment time, the stylist approached me saying "I'm ready now", I was immediately put off by how rude they were, as if I was inconveniencing them? We talked about what I was looking to do in regard to coloring over / blending a balayage. I clearly articulated what I wanted done but after a bit of back and fourth, it was evident they had no interest in helping me. I was given the impression they just wanted to rush me out of there. Overall, really disappointed in their unprofessionalism, especially after reading all of the great reviews on here and seeing some of their work on Instagram, etc. I'm sure there are talented stylists here but they have to get it together on the customer service end. read more

Made an appointment to see a mid level stylist that came recommended to me. Overheard a girl say it was her first day working there and then she comes out to tell me that she will be cutting my hair. When i asked her where Marcus was, she replied "he gave you to me." After some discussion, Marcus came out and said he was in the middle of a foil and was going to be another 30 minutes or so And that I could wait. I wish they had had a conversation with me first. Giving a one star review to this business would be generous of me. This place is centered on just trying to make money on their customers. I typically do not write reviews, but this is the third time I have visited their store and will definitely not be returning considering every time I have visited it has not been a pleasant experience. My first time visit: I had recently gotten my hair cut short, which I had not been used to since I have had long hair my entire life. I had my high school graduation about a week following my hair cut and I quickly learned I did not know how to properly style short hair. I was able to make an appointment with them that morning (which I will give them compliments for being able to accommodate me so last minute). I had told my hair stylist of what my goal was, which I believe she did not listen to a single word I said. The entire time I was getting my hair done, there was a clear lack of communication between employees which definitely made me feel uncomfortable because the front desk receptionist kept asking how much longer it would take for the stylist to finish my hair. Not to mention, I had said I needed to leave at 3:15, but didn't exit the salon until close to 4:00. Needless to say, I walked out spending $55 on a hair style I was very displeased with. I asked for light "beachy" waves, and received very loose big "curls" with lots of crunch from the amount of hairspray applied to my hair. I don't like to make a fuss, so I paid the price, tipped my stylist, and then said thank you. I then proceeded to cry in my car. My second visit: I've been looking for a new shampoo and conditioner, and found I like amika products. This brand does happen to be hard to find but I knew this salon carried it. I entered it not knowing what I was looking to purchase but in hopes of talking to a product consultant. I told the girl what I was looking for, and instead she began showing me an entirely different line of products which were twice the price of the amika products. I had suggested to go back to the amika line which the consultant then sold me (come to find out) product meant for curly hair, which I clearly do not have curly hair which the consultant must've failed to notice. Based on how I spoke to the girl it was also clear I was new to this product, which I wish she shared with me the return policy because I visited my hair dresser who instructed me to return the product as it was not a good fit for my hair. Today, I returned to the salon to return the shampoo and conditioner only to find out because of COVID they aren't taking any returns. Very disappointed that I wasted $50 on product that doesn't even satisfy my hair needs. Safe to say I will NOT be returning here. read more

Ok thanks I then walk around and see about 4 shelves worth of Oribe products so I think to myself, "do you think she thought you meant every, single product ever?" Perplexed. Then comes the haircut - I show her a picture with obvious layers in the front. I was asked if I wanted layers. I say yes, in the front. Haircut over and I have absolutely no layers, even though she said she put them in. I also point out some uneven sections in the front, she tries fixing them even though she did not check the cut at all - again perplexed. I have had really bad experiences with attempts to "fix" hair problems so I just pay ($55 + tip) and leave. i get home and the back is uneven. UGH! thought about going back to get this fixed but I rather go some place else. read more

Very friendly staff. Receptionist was very nice and offered something to drink as soon as we checked in. Beth the girl who cut my daughters hair did a nice job and was very sweet. My daughter is the kind of person who can talk to you after you've left the room.. she just loves chit chat and Beth kept up and didn't seem bothered by it. I made the appointment last minute because the place I usually go to was booked and the hair cut was a spur of the moment thing. We went to the salon closer to CVS. Nice area up front with products.. Kiehls, Bumble and Bumble, OPI nail polish. The cut was I think $45 before tip. Not sure how much kids cuts are seeing my daughter is of age for the ladies cut here. Jean Paul has the reputation of being a very high-end salon, so I was curious to try the nail salon. I went to the Jean Paul nail salon about five weeks ago. I hesitated writing a review right away because I know it was not going to be a good one. I admit that I did not have an appointment and asked for a walk-in availability. They were able to accommodate me for an hour and a half after I asked, which I thought was fine because I looked around Stuyvesant Plaza and had a cup of coffee at Starbucks while I waited. When I was taken in for my appointment and asked to choose a color for ANC, I was surprised by the few choices that were available. It was OK, because the color I wanted was there. The technician was surprised that she had to remove my old color. I didn't think to say at the desk that I needed it removed, because it was clear that I had polish on my fingers. Usually if you get another ANC fill, it includes removing the old color first. The technician said that she did not want to use a file on my nails to remove the color, and was quite perturbed that she had to remove the color because she did not plan on that time allotment apparently. It did take quite a while as I had to soak in heated tray of nail polish remover. Normally when I have it removed, it is done with cotton and foil and it soaks off very easily. I'm not sure how much experience the technician has in this kind of application but I wanted to cry when I saw my nails, as they appeared to have lumps and mounds of color close to the cuticle end of my nail and flattening out as it moved up. I don't really know to how describe it except it looked ridiculous. To make matters worse, I paid $80 for this travesty. Normally I pay $35.00 for this service. I should have said something at the time. I should've asked to speak to a manager but I didn't want to get the technician in trouble. I just knew it would be the last time that I stepped foot into that salon. In the meantime, I have found another place. They did a beautiful job and charged the normal amount. I was very surprised at the lack of professionalism and the quality of work coming from this establishment. read more

Straight guys need care and pampering too, so I took one of my gfs for facials at Jean Paul in the Stuyvesant Plaza. Nice vibe, we perused many of their lovely beauty products after being greeted warmly. I decided to stick with using Gold Dial soap. After a brief change into complementary robes and slippers, we entered the inviting spa area. On to the private table where the facial was less than spectacular. She just went through the motions and seemed uninterested, I asked if they had many men come through the place and received a terse reply indicating they did not. My skin was at its loveliest and my companion was pleased as well. Guys, let's find a place that suits us better than this environment. read more

I had a cut and foil with DC. Went in with a few pictures and she kept true to style. Fabulous blond color as well. Thoroughly explaining the different shades of blond as well as achieving the color I wanted. She has a way of looking at your face and hair, giving you a great style. 5 Stars for Emily, my hairdresser: She never lets me down and gives me a great haircut. Hairdressers usually try to straighten my curly hair, but she doesn't -- and she cuts it so it looks good curly and it's manageable for about 2-3 months. I highly recommend her, although I hesitate to because I don't want her to be too booked. 3 stars for the spa services: I've gotten a pedicure, a wax, threading, and a makeup lesson. The good: makeup lesson was great -- she taught me how to do my makeup in a way that I really liked. But it was overpriced. The mediocre: threading -- it took her a few times to realize what I wanted but otherwise would trim my eyebrows too thin; pedicure -- the person who did it was really nice, but the service is not worth the pricetag. The bad: waxing -- the person who did it was not particularly nice and the pricetag is too high. See a theme? Emily is worth the high pricetag, but none of the rest of it is. If you know of another place to get nails and facials, please let me know because I'd prefer not to go back to Jean Paul, but if it's the only game in town, I might not have a choice ... read more

I have had my eyebrows threaded twice here and both times it has been painless, done well, and quick. It is hard to get an appointment here but well worth the planning. Lucy gave me a manicure last Thursday, the $25 version, and it still looks beautiful on Monday morning, following a weekend in NYC and packing moving boxes. She took great care to give me the most fabulous manicure I've had in a long time and not just because I paid for "the works". Will definitely return to this salon. read more

Just got done with a cut, blowout, & style by Whitney and I couldn't be happier! She was so attentive, listened to all my concerns with no ego at all (like some past salons I've been to) and I love what she did with my hair! Posting a photo of it on here in a minute. The salon was well-organized, everything ran on time, and I love all the products they have for sale in the front (cool jewelry, hair products, makeup, etc). I bought a new lipstick which I'm also wearing in the pic. Next time I'm in Albany, this is the salon I will choose with Whitney as my stylist. The price was very reasonable as well, and the manager stopped by to say hi to us and compliment Whitney's work :) read more

I need to vent because I'm feeling frustrated with this salon. I've been coming here for 8 years (and honestly don't know why I kept coming back) have done all sorts of things on my hair mainly haircuts but this last style is driving me crazy. Since the beginning of the year I've been coming to Jean Paul to get obre balayage to go from dark to ashy gray. So if they had told me back then in March that it'd take till sometime next year to get my hair to the ashy gray color I want, I'd never would've done it. But they said it'd take a couple of visits, which I get, but when they don't leave in the bleach as long as they should to allow the hair to lighten, I can see why it would take that long. Their reason for not leaving the bleach in long is "because it's not good for your hair" but I'm sure it's because it's not good for their wallets. So that you have to keep coming back every 2 months to get it done and spend $230 every time!! For barely any change to the color!! Last time I went back in July, I told the hairstylist I was getting married in November so I was going to be coming back in October for one more balayage lightning and she said that at that visit I was able to finally be the ashy gray tone I wanted and in time for the wedding. Well today was that day and STILL no way near what I want. Barely any change again and to make things worse, the color is a bit off on one side. It's a bit lighter than the other side. When I told her I thought we'd be at the tone I wanted, she just said sorry and gave me some bs excuse again. I then asked her so how many more times until I get there and she said it was hard to tell. Ugh I'm so tired and completely DONE with them!! I have already made an appointment elsewhere to hopefully get the color more even on both sides. I am NEVER going back to them again! ******Oh I forgot to mentioned that one of the times I had an appointment, after I checked in they told me it'd be a few minutes while they got my stylist and 45 mins later I was still waiting. I was on my phone and so wasn't keeping track of time when I eventually did and realized 45 mins had passed. I got up and someone at the front desk finally acknowledged me and asked if I was still waiting. I told them yeah and that I was leaving because it was now so much later to start my appointment. What in the world was the stylist for those 45 mins?!! If it wasn't because their manager called and offered me a discount on the next visit, I would've never went back. -Wish I didn't. read more
