So many words come to mind when I think about my meal at Salinas. From the minute you step inside, you are greeted by a smiling face and beautiful imported Ecuadorian roses. The restaurant is thoughtfully laid out with a hallway near the entrance, which decreased foot traffic and noise and gives diners near the front of the restaurant a better experience. We were seated in the back dining room, which was perfectly intimate. Seated along the wall in the dimly light dining room, I noticed there were small lights directly over our table shining directly in front of each diner, to aid in reading of the menu and to see our food in all its glory. The attention to detail here is, as you can probably already guess, phenomenal. Service was equally delightful. All the waitstaff were professional and friendly, attentive but not overbearing. At one point, I got up from my table to use the restroom. A gentleman who might've been the manager asked if he could help with anything, and then walked me all the way there (in the front hallway). Seriously, the staff here treat you like royalty. Now on to the food and drink. We had a few cocktails, the La Lupita and the El Club Del Desayuno, both of which were refreshing and mixed well. For food, we had 6 tapas; my favorites were the scallop and steak skewer (a special menu item) and a lamb shank dish served in a martini glass with a side of fried wonton skin. The serrano ham, machego cheese, and mussels special were also really tasty. Ironically, the very popular popcorn-crusted octopus dish didn't wow me; I found the sauce to be too salty and the popcorn didn't do anything for me. And finally, the Fideos Negros (squid ink vermicelli) was nice and creamy, but stained your lips and teeth. The hostess was rude and completely unprofessional. You should not be in hospitality if you are hostile. I was " 3" minutes late for my reservation and she said she had given away our table without making any effort to accommodate us. I would've rated this place 5 stars if they haven't cancelled my reservations the day of my reservations because I didn't text them back that I would still be going, I actually had overlooked the text as I was working, so my garden seating reservations was given up and I had to sit in their indoor dining area, which was also nice but I had requested the garden seating for a reason. Terrible service. Ruined night.. We had a reservation for 6, they tried to cramm us into a table that would comfortably sit 4 people. When we refused and asked for a bigger table everyone became nasty starting from waiters and all the way up to management. After finally settling in with a bigger table we were given eye rolling service. Waitress walked away a couple of times while we were talking to her. Glasses were dirty. We had to ask more than twice for things we wanted. At the end of the night when we finally have had enough the manager simply told us to get out if we dont like something. A friend of mine made a reservation and I forgot I came here. But after coming back. I have to say the drinks have gotten good. The appetizers were great. Best one was the eggplant pistachio appetizer. Everything else was mediocre. The pasta we got was terrible. Octopus was cooked well. I do have to say a lot of the food felt like there was a tiny bit pinch of salt in everything. At least not as bad as when I first came. Got here early for our reservation time. We were a little upset because we wanted to try the paella and the popcorn octopus but those were outdated items/ not on the menu for the day. The sangria was delicious, and the service was good. After our friends arrived, we were moved to a table across from the bar. Salinas has a beautiful dining room, that is reminiscent of a 70s disco, but in a classy way. We ordered a couple of dishes to share, including octopus, trout, paella, patatas bravas, lamb tartare, croquetas (the daily ones included pumpkin and prosciutto I think). Very small place. And extremely hot! We told the hostess and the temperature still stayed in the mid 80s through out the whole meal. Not an intimate dining experience at all. The food was extremely salty- the food is really poor and sadly I mean really poor. Sad that since the ambiance is pretty great. Made a reservation for dinner here and arrived 10 minutes late due to traffic and issues with getting an Uber. As I walked in, the hostess was incredibly rude and gave me a ton of attitude telling me they only have a 10-minute grace period, and they're full of reservations for the evening, and the table is only booked for 90 minutes. I proceeded to the bar to wait for my friend, who was a few minutes behind me. The bar is incredibly cramped, with no room to move. My friend arrived a few minutes later, and we met the hostess again to get seated. She reiterated the policy and basically said we would have only an hour to eat before we needed to be out for the next reservation. She reinforced that this was indicated on the booking when the reservation was made, and had no customer service skills or empathy. My friend and I decided to leave. We didn't want to be rushed or deal with the extreme attitude that this place was demonstrating. I get that the food might be really good, but they should treat their paying customers a bit better. If being rushed through dinner is what is required to dine here, I'll pass. We went to Boqueria instead and had a delicious meal and were not only able to get a table, but we were able to take our time and enjoy our meal. read more

(Except for the smell of artificial roses emanating from the bathrooms; it was overwhelming to this man who is intolerant of the smell of roses.) I've been to Salinas many times, but this was the first time that I didn't care for the food. The croquetas were good if too mushy, but the shitake mushrooms had a very bizarre vinegary taste, inedible for me. My friend's fideo was uninspired at best. My main course, the hanger steak, was cooked perfectly but, even though I am someone who overdoes salt in general, it tasted like the chef had used an entire bottle of salt. I could only manage one bite. If we were not pressed with theatre time, I'd have sent the steak back. VERY disappointing overall. I know that it has been difficult to find good chefs since the pandemic, but this was a shock--and a very price shock to boot. I'm not sure if I'll return. read more

Fantastic ambience with wonderful lighting and delicious tapas! My girlfriend and I ate here to celebrate our six months anniversary and coincidentally also my birthday. Though we didn't bring an umbrella for the absolute storm that came after, the food and ambience was most definitely worth it! For tapas/appetizers we got the Pan Tumaca and the Croquetas (white fish filling when we were there). The juicy tomato combined with the olive oil and crispy bread created a comforting yet exciting umami experience despite the dish being vegetarian. The Croquetas were super crispy on the outside while the inside was creamy and rich with a hint of the sea; the cognitive dissonance as we bit into our first piece left us immediately yearning for more. For main dishes, we ordered the Pulpo con Cenizas and Arroz Vasco. Similar to the Croquetas, the Pulpo con Cenizas had a thin film of delicate crispiness on the outside while the inside had a delightful bite similar to the texture of mozzarella cheese. Compared to the rest of the dishes, the Arroz Vasco was slightly underwhelming; the salted cod risotto was a little too salted, which detracted from the freshness and nuance of the ocean we felt were the intended characteristics of this dish. Finally, the precise lighting, rows of bottles, tall plants, and moon roof orchestrated the overall vibe of a mystical speakeasy wine cellar located in the depths of the Amazon. That being said, the service was slightly subpar in comparison to the other amazing aspects of this restaurant; our waiter took quite a long time to approach us despite it not being a busy night, and proceeded to spill water on my phone and napkin. It was a simple mishap and no harm was done, but compared to the other wonderful elements of this establishment, the service appears to be a tiny blemish on an otherwise delightful dining experience. We would most definitely recommend this place, but I think it'd be best to stick to the tapas and perhaps other main dishes that we missed out on! read more

Food is tapas style with small portion, so you can try a lot of different dishes. All foods are beautifully plated, and very photogenic, but they are all a little on the salty side. The popcorn octopus dish was the most memorable for me. The crispness of the popcorn + the tenderness of the octopus meat + the black squid ink paste are like a trio playing a beautiful song inside my mouth. When I ate here they were out of the one rice dish we really wanted to try, which was a little annoying. However, the portions sizes are not small! We took the servers suggestion and ordered 2 rice dishes, 1 main and 4 appetizers/sides and weren't able to finish all our food, so we definitely could've done with less. The only downside was that alot of the food was definitely salter than I would've liked. The prices are pretty standard for NYC, nothing too crazy. Salinas has an old school feel with its cozy seating layouts, beautiful fresh flowers, and all-male waiters (I didn't see any waitress during my dinner). Contrary to the traditional ambiance, the food feels well-catered to all ages and accommodating to everyone with different dietary needs. There's something for the meat lovers, the vegetarians, the vegans, the gluten-free preferred customers! And each item is explicitly marked with these differences. For that reason, Salinas would be a great place to come with a large group of people without worrying whether someone may go hungry. Hits: - Charcuterie board: can't really go wrong with this choice - Eggplant appetizer with pistachio crumbs (but I can make this at home. - Octopus tasted delicious with crunchy crust on the outside. It's totally different and it's good. Misses: - Artichoke appetizer was okay and blend - Rice dishes were not very special but it did taste healthy I would come back here but maybe when I'm much older. It's kind of boring and expensive.
