I have eaten here once a week for about 2 years, and I was suprised to read some of the reviews so I'll be very precise. I usually arrive right when they open at 1130 and I have only ever gotten the 3 roll lunch special. For $12.99 you get your choice of 3 rolls with soup and salad. The rolls are decent for the price. We thought that this was going to be our go to Japanese Steakhouse.. came for dinner one time and loved it.. but soon found out we will go somewhere else. We came for lunch around 1:45. Upon receiving our food, we were brought the bill. About 5 minutes into our meal, we were brought boxes and told to pay because they closed. The server didn't want give refills either. There're just little touches that Benihana does to make sure the meal is so much better like eggs and fried onions in the soup and more than just salad in your salad bowl. I absolutely love this place. I feel like a winner every time I go. The sushi is amazing and the hibachi is to die for!!! They love large parties, so don't be afraid to make reservations for 23, because they will be able to accommodate!!! I celebrated my 30th birthday here and I was so surprised at their level of customer service. We had three servers and never had to wait for even a sip of water!!! First off, I don't want the ranking to be deceiving, the food was delicious. The biggest issue was around service, and I will go into more detail below: The organization of the host/hostess is anything but organized. Having friends in town, I wanted to make the best of their time here, so I made reservations at Sakura. It was only a party of 5 (so nothing ridiculous for them to accommodate), and they took the reservation with no problem. Upon arrival we told the gentleman at the front that we had arrived, and he crossed our name off the list. There were a couple people waiting, but nothing excessive. After waiting for an HOUR past our reservation, and seeing THREE different parties who came in after us seated, it was to the point of ridiculousness. The host did not record names, nor did he write down anything whenever a new party came in. I am unsure if he was new or the usual, but this method was all but organized. After finally getting seated an hour late (and we made reservations, mind you), it took another 20 minutes for the server to bring our drinks. After our orders were taken, and the chef came to begin the cooking, I believe the server left. I say that because we never saw him again. Members of my party went 20 minutes without their drinks being refilled (once empty), and he never did return. Another server delivered our checks, and we were gone. The food was very good, but with poor service of this level, I will not be returning to this establishment. Hopefully this helps some of you out! read more

I went here for sushi takeout after a long day of work. My order was ready in less than 15 minutes on a Saturday night at prime dinnertime. The person who answered the phone spoke clearly and was friendly enough. I had the miso soup, Alaska roll, and Spicy Girl Roll. Everything was delicious! We order from here almost weekly, but today I'm not sure I can ever return. Any time we have ever had a problem it has been dealt by the older woman who works here in an awful way. She is a manager and I'm not sure she knows how to manage a problem. The first time I had an issue with my order being wrong and since my son was asleep I was unable to come back in before they closed for lunch. I requested a refund and I was told no but I could come back before they close and get the correct thing. Which I again informed them that I was not able to come back in right now. The whole thing went round robin until I finally got the owner who said I could come in another day and they'd refund me and remake the order. The next time they didn't put a lid fully on a soup and so it exploded in the bag and cooked my sushi. Again a run around about getting it replaced because if the lid came open "that was my fault." This was the day a family member had passed away so I cried in their establishment while they decided to remake my food. Today was the cherry on top. We ordered about $50 worth of food. We consistently spend about $40 here weekly for the past 5 years. We also order for holidays and parties. We have probably spent thousands of dollars here. Usually I would give them a 5 star review but after today I'm not sure we can ever return. We ordered sushi today as well as hibachi. I picked it up and went home but opened it up to find all of the wrong sushi. I immediately called and said hey can we please come in and get what we ordered. I was told they were busy and it would be 30 minutes before I could get a new order. I told them that was unacceptable because when you have a messed up order, normally that moves to the front of the line, I shouldn't be further penalized because you guys messed up, I'm already inconvenienced driving back in the rain and hail. I was then hung up on. So my husband called, saying the same thing, we will be there in 15 minutes and would like it ready when we arrive as our other food is getting cold. He was hung up on. So I called a third time. Telling them I was already on my way and expected a refund unless all of my food could be remade because at this point all of our food was cold while trying to handle you replacing what you messed up. The older woman again was very rude saying it would be ready when it was ready because they are busy. So I asked to speak to someone else because she was being rude and had hung up on us twice already. So she handed me to one of the servers. Who again I informed that we either expected everything to be remade or a full refund for our order. I was driving back now with all of the food. He told me he couldn't get the food made faster because he's not the manager. I asked who was and he said the woman I was just speaking to. So why am I talking to someone who can't help me? I asked to speak to the owner. I was told he was busy and couldn't talk to me. Again I said this is not my problem, you guys figure it out, I'm around the corner and if it's not handled then we will get a refund and reconsider coming here. He then went to get him and I heard the older lady saying just hang up. I was hung up on a THIRD TIME. So I get in there and I'm like I want a refund, here's all my food and the older woman manager is rolling her eyes at me saying the roll is made now, and I'm telling her yeah but you hung up on us so many times my husband ordered food from somewhere else because all of our food is cold now. So the owner comes over and I'm trying to explain to him that the problem isn't with the order being wrong, it's with how this was handled. Being told I would have to wait longer to get the food that I ordered and not bumping it up when it was wrong, then being hung up on THREE TIMES, and finally getting eye rolls FROM THE MANAGER because I complained that she HUNG UP ON ME while trying to fix it. I wasted over an hour of my time, gas, and sanity when they could have moved the order up. I shouldn't be inconvenienced because you guys messed up, I'm already driving back in the rain and hail and I'm not even upset. This situation was escalated because the manager doesn't know how to handle an issue. I tried speaking to the owner about this, telling him it wasn't the problem, it was how the problem was handled and he kept interrupting me in a way that made it seem like he didn't care to fix it, he just wanted me to leave. So Sakura, you have an opportunity to make this right by retraining your manager in customer service and a real apology and this will be a 5 star review about all your delicious food and how we usually get good service and how we have come here weekly for 5 years and how we often bring our friends too. If not, we won't be back and the review stands. I hope you choose to make this right, because usually you're great, but my anxiety can't handle dealing with your manager who escalates problems instead of solving them. read more

This place is a very typical sushi/steak house. It has all the bells and whistles you would expect walking into a place like this, there is really nothing special about the environment. The wait staff and chiefs are always friendly and so far I have never had to wait to be seated for lunch, though i always go to the sushi bar. I really would give this place a 3.5 for two simple reasons. One, the quality of there fish is very good. It ranks up there with some of the more expensive high end sushi places but the prices are very decent giving that they have lunch specials that make eating here affordable. Two, its very simple, Power Roll! They have a large array of specialty sushi rolls and so far I've only tried a fifth of what they have, but one stands out to give them that .5 lift the Power Roll. It is a must try of special rolls and i dare say seats side-by-side with Sticky Rice;s Bomb Roll. I don't want to go to much to whats in it but lets say it involves a Fillet Mignon seared and added to the roll. Not only do they have the Power Roll but its priced at $9, and with most of there specialty rolls there all priced between $5-$12 which makes it college student wallet friendly. So come out and check it out its worth the effort just don't come in expecting great things and you will leave satisfied. read more

Majority of my family lives in the Richmond area. When I come in town for special events, we always go here. The food is always great and everyone enjoys it, including the kids. The chefs vary in "tricks," but I believe it is dependent upon how interested we are. If we are all talking and not really paying attention, they don't do much. If the kids are very intrigued or we are paying more attention, they will do more tricks. Totally understandable! I recommend it for sure! read more

The best hibachi I have ever had. Sushi is fantastic. We love to chat with the staff because we've been coming here about once a week for 1.5 years! We usually get a combination of the calamari, shrimp hibachi, chicken hibachi, haru maki, oi oka canned iced tea, yellowtail sashimi , salmon sashimi, tuna sashimi, tuna roll, spicy Kani roll, lobster tail roll too! We will occasionally join the entertainment side for fun and do hibachi with the groups. Most of the time we grab a nice quiet booth to have conversation. My husband and I have been here for lunch, what a good deal with chicken and shrimp hibachi at 11.99! Dinner... Not so much. Just ordered takeout. The same food for 26.99!! And apparently I'm paying for the "hibachi experience," but I ordered takeout? My suggestion to management is to alter take out prices accordingly. My wife and I have tried some of the more popular hibachi steakhouses in Richmond, but we keep coming back to Sakura. The price is not inflated, but the quality is superb. The staff is very friendly and attentive. Sometimes there is a bit of a language barrier, but that is understandable as this is an authentic Japanese steakhouse. The sushi is amazing and always presented in an aesthetically pleasing way. The hibachi is not over-seasoned like so many of the restaurants. The rice is my personal favorite and I love the sauces you are given. It always blows my mind that this place is almost always deserted. Please don't go out of business! Also, the guy on here who gave this place a low rating because "everything was done cooking at different times"...ummm...that is how hibachi style cooking is done. This is so sad for me because they used to be great. Truly my favorite restaurant in Richmond. However, my last two experiences have been awful. The last time I was there, the service was terrible. Also, they decided not to cook the rice at the table but did not bother to give a heads up about it before we ordered. I decided to try them again today. Instead she took off 10% and didn't want us to see the canceled check again. Finally when we got everything squared away, she remarked, "Don't come back again". Hands down my absolute favorite hibachi place in Richmond, primarily because they use teriyaki on everything instead of just the soy sauce base. If you prefer a soy sauce-style recipe (ie., Kabuto, Kobe) then this might not be your favorite, but if you like the thicker, sweeter teriyaki then you can't do better than Sakura. The chefs are efficient and friendly. The food is incredibly consistent. Portions are always good sizes. The prices are comparable to other hibachi restaurants in town, if not a couple bucks cheaper per entree. The appetizers are tasty as well--I love the pan fried pork gyoza and the yakitori (which is also obviously heavy on the teriyaki). Several family and friends who I've brought here love the white "yum yum" sauce that comes on the side. If you're a yum yum fan then you'll definitely enjoy this stuff. Their ginger sauce is really tasty as well. The ginger-based salad dressing is okay, the clear onion soup is perfect for a starter. If you like hibachi then you seriously need to give this place a try. TIP: if you're one of those people who likes the food but hates the "show" aspect of the meal then you can just ask to order off of the hibachi menu in the sushi section. You get a private booth and don't have to join in the communal "entertainment" atmosphere. I always request this and the staff have always been accommodating even though I never order sushi. read more

Best Sakura of them all. There seems to be a Sakura in every city I visit, but this easily overlooked location has them all beat. Service is always friendly and fast, the food is very high quality, nothing ever tastes warmed or stale, and while there's only so much invention happening in any Sakura kitchen, what they do they do really well. My favorite hibachi in Richmond, best miso soup and salad dressing too. I usually get sushi and my wife loves the boxes, and veggie tempura. My wife and I love love love this place! We go here every year for our anniversary and we always have a great time! The chefs on the hibachi are always entertaining and they are great with any children that are at the table! I also love the fact that they usually always put coupons out in the Reach Magazine so you can always get 10% off your entire bill and sometimes they actually put out 20% off coupons out too! My wife and I always get the filet And chicken and it comes with soup salad rice and veggies. The only reason they do not get 5 stars is because the past few times we have gone it seems as if they have started giving smaller portions than they used to give.
