Me and the fam came here for my recent birthday. I just love this style of cooking and had been wanting to visit this location for quite some time. Since it was my day, it was my choice, so here we were! Six of us arrived at about 6:30 p.m. on a Thursday night. There are two areas to choose from - the hibachi dining room which gives you dinner and a show, and the other side that has a bar and sushi dining room. The place was larger than I thought and I was pleased to see there was no wait for a table in the hibachi dining area. We had two small kids in tow, a 2 year old and 4 year old, and I was wondering how the staff would handle it. They were very gracious and pleasant, and I could see they were surprisingly kid friendly. We were offered a high chair for the 2 year old. They even have separate entrees for kids. Our chef was great. He paid extra attention to our 4 year old, even though at first she was frightened by the fire show he put on. After awhile, she got used to it since she saw it at every table, but in the beginning she was hiding under our table. I can't blame her -- that was a pretty big fire he created, and if you aren't expecting it I can see how that would be startling. Especially if you are 4. Anyway, I loved the whole shtick he put on, from the initial blaze to the creation of the "volcano" where he cuts up an onion and stacks it just so, pours oil down the middle and lights it on fire so it looks like a volcano. He did a few other tricks too, including tossing pieces of chicken at my son and the kids, trying to get them to catch it in their mouths. He threw one at my daughter too, and she was the only one to successfully grab it (I think she's done this before). In the end, there were a lot of chicken pieces on the floor, since no one else was able to get one. Gotta hand it to the chef, though, he kept on trying! Food was wonderful, as good as I had hoped. I had filet mignon and shrimp and all was cooked to perfection. Everyone else enjoyed everything they got too, so we were a table of happy campers. Since the hostess caught wind that it was my birthday, I even received a special little birthday dessert compliments of Sakura. To round it out, we received Miso soup and a small salad prior to the main course. Both were average and really not memorable. So glad I finally had a chance to visit Sakura. Next time, I would love to try the sushi side of the house along with some exotic cocktails! read more

It's pretty good place. But if you like Sakura in centreville, I suggest that you pay a visit to tysons corner Sakura. it's so much better than the centreville one. I am a big fan of japanese steak houses despite of amazing amount of butter that they tend to use. Food is good and service/show is mediocre. I say mediocre because it's not always good. Some uninspiring chefs don't put too much effort to entertain your dining table and it ruins the experience. Some days are good and some are bad. Inconsistency leads me to give this place 3 stars (only reluctantly.. as Yelp doesn't offer half stars). I also do not suggest that you get sushi from here. If you're a sushi lover, you'll be able to tell that they don't use fresh ingredients, which is a big No No in sushi restaurants. I mean it's there and it's close to me. This place is OK. My boss loves it so I go here about once a month at least. It's huge and a little drab inside with dark wood and closed curtains - a bit depressing to me. They have a bar and TV but it's never crowded at lunch. The service is decent and the price is a little high for sushi. It's average...nothing really more comes to mind. read more

Just went here for sushi lunch. Shrimp tempura roll was awful. Crab tasted bad, shrimp was 'stale' as if it was left over from night before and microwaved too many times. Also ordered 2 pieces of tuna sashimi. Ate 1 piece and it too had an off taste. My friend decided to eat my other piece and when he tried it, he ended up spitting into his napkin because of off taste. Would not go here again. read more

Worst meal ever! I have been here for lunch regularly for many years. However, today myself and two co-worker went for lunch. We waited an hour for our food and eventually asked them to pack it to go as we had to be back at work. The service was terrible, almost as bad as the food. The manager was there and walked past us several times and neither the waitress or the manager gave any kind of explanation or apology. We took the food back to the office (less than a 5 minute drive) and the chicken teriyaki was ICE cold! The teriyaki sauce on it was like a thick jelly b/c it was cold. Since we waited an hour to get our food it should have been warm when we got it. The chicken is hard so I'm not sure if they kept reheating it maybe? I can't even eat it. I will no longer be frequenting this restaurant. read more

Came to Sakura on a Sunday afternoon in the mood for sushi/japanese food. Inside the decor and space was nice. There are two sections, one for the Hibachi tables and one for non-hibachi/sushi. This review is for non-hibachi only since we did not sit at the hibachi tables. The sushi was not good. The main issue was the quality of the ingredients. The rice in the sushi was pretty terrible. If Todai sushi is 'average', this was below Todai sushi quality, and Todai is all you can eat! The rolls were poorly rolled. Prices were also very expensive. They didn't have any type of noodles/soup except for a small bowl of miso soup that was several dollar by itself (miso soup SHOULD be complementary with your meal). I don't know what it was about Sakura that didn't strike me as appealing...maybe it was the rude waitress and terrible service, or the fact that the food was gross! I never really like to say any of my food is 'gross' but this was really unappetizing!!! The sushi that my boyfriend and I got was mushy and the avocado that was brown when it came out to the table...and I understand that avocado can do that...but usually when I get sushi I get avocado that is still green...the sushi was so bad that it was honestly hard to get down! *3.5 stars* This place is a lot of fun with large groups. It is spacious and well kept. They keep you entertained as they cook up the food you've ordered. They interact with you and make you do things like try to catch a piece of meat with your mouth that they've slung from the grill. Instantaneous laughs from everyone. For your meal, you start with a soup and salad that are prepared in the kitchen. Then you choose from chicken, beef or seafood options as your base to be cooked on the hibachi. Fried rice is cooked here as well. Although I can be picky, I always enjoy the food here enough. It's nothing to knock your socks off, but it's filling. Service is "meh" as well. Make sure everyone in your large group arrives together and on time. Even if you have reservations, they will not seat you unless everyone is there, possibly even giving away your seats depending upon how long it takes for the slacker(s) to show up. read more

Went here last weekend with a couple of my girlfriends. Kevin was our cook, he was friendly, funny and put on a show. It's nice to be able to get Japanese beer here. The sushi was ok but I've had better. The Hibachi steak, chicken and shrimp was awesome. The steak was cooked perfectly and the shrimp was delicious too. The Chicken teriyaki was ice cold and the sauce was jelly like. The waitress never came up to tell us what was going on until we called for her. Since no "vegetarian" seems to have boldly visited this place to do a review - I want to provide the vegetarian perspective here. We went there on a Friday evening because my daughter wanted to experience Hibachi style cooking on her 7th birthday ( looks like kids are getting way too sophisticated now-a-days!). Being vegetarian, I avoid going to Japanese restaurants because of the lack of choices. Even while I was working in Japan I used to locate the "Shojin cuisine" restaurtants to play it safe. Couldnt escape this one:). Anyways, we got there on a busy prom night but we got seated fairly quckly in front of a hibachi grill - shared the grill with another family of 4. The waitress showed up and when we declared that we were vegetarians - told that there was a "Vegetable dinner" that was available with "Egg Fried Rice". She also cautioned that since Soup had chicken broth in it - that she would bring "Sakura Salad" for us. So far so good. We ordered 3 vegetable dinners and sides of mushrooms (and of course my fav beer Kirin Ichiban). Chef arrived shortly thereafter ( my wife immediately figured out that he was Korean and not japanese and asked me to stop acting like an idiot as I was trying my extremely rusty japanese). The chef tried his best to prepare the meat and non-meat foods separately. But, I got to tell you - if you are WAY too strict a vegetarian this place is definitely not for you as the Chef does very often use the same knife and spatula in between food groups. The only way to remedy this I think is to show up with 4 more vegetarians so that you take over the entire grill. Overall, I liked the experience of going to a Hibachi style place - would repeat ONLY if I can take a big gang of vegetarians!. read more

First off the Bathrooms were dirty!! They were littered with paper and there was water all over the sink area. The Ceiling near the vents inside the restaurant is disgusting. The manager really needs to do some spring cleaning and change out some air filters! For the price you pay for food here you should have a nice clean atmosphere!! This is the icing on the cake... While the waitress was pouring out our sauces from the "pitcher" a long black hair came out and was sticking out of the dish!! We told her about it and she just poured it into a new one. Didn't want to ruin the experience for everyone at our table so we kept quiet and avoided the sauce. We will never come back!! So disgusted!! I was craving sushi and realized one of my picky coworkers had never experienced hibachi, so we made a plan to have dinner here. Four of us came here and were seated immediately at a hibachi table. A server came over and took an order of water while we looked at the menu. I realized there was no sushi on the regular menu, but the server seemed to have disappeared so i went and got my own sushi menu. When the server came back with the water for our food orders, she took their orders, then saw that I wanted sushi and took the menus from us quickly. We were left realizing none of us had ordered a cocktail and the menus were now gone. She disappeared yet again and we had to flag her down for a cocktail. For some reason, my coworkers got their soup and salad immediately, while I only got my salad and my soup (which was notably better than theirs) was delivered about 15 min later. The hibachi chef was awesome. He was very funny and friendly and one of the best I've seen - he had all of us laughing. The chicken, beef and shrimp were all pretty good and very plentiful - none of my coworkers could eat their whole meals. I ordered the sushi deluxe which came with a california roll and an order of eel. None of the sushi was memorable (not bad in any way, just bland), but surprisingly the california roll was the best I've had in recent memory. I usually avoid this roll because it's boring, but this was more of a crab salad than a crab stick, so it had a fun fresh taste I liked. While I liked this roll, I didn't come here for the california roll, I came for the sushi, so without anything memorable in that department, I can't really rate this place any higher. read more

Okay, I'm going to put aside my hibachi-hating self and not be biased and just review based on food and service. I never sit at the hibachi grill so this is based on the other side of the restaurant where is it restaurant-style. I always order sushi rolls & shirley temples the times that I went. and my date would order some type of teriyaki meat (lol, no one wants to eat with me b/c I coerce ppl to get what I want too!!!) The sushi rolls have always been very average. Sometimes the rice is hard and it's just very inconsistent. In addition, the teriyaki chicken sauce has always been too salty the times that I've ordered it. The upside is that the waitresses are always friendly and fast. Maybe the hibachi is better, but i highly doubt it (okay, that's just my little biased tidbit! don't worry, didn't affect my rating hehe) read more

I went here for the first time with some friends for the hibachi. It was not bad at all and the fried rice was very flavorful unlike some other places I've been to. The sushi selection was very generic and not impressive for the avid sushi-eater like myself. The sake sampler was pretty good. Staff was very attentive and nice and the hibachi chefs were really funny and showed us all a good time. I recommend this for a fun night that doesn't put a dent in your pocket. read more

Having never tried either Hibachi or filet mignon, this restaurant provided me with more than one new experience. I initially thought it was related to the chain, Sakura Express, that's prevalent in mall foods courts; however, the waiter informed me that it was not. The chef at our Hibachi station (I'm assuming that's what it's called) was awesome! He definitely dazzled our eyes with a ton of tricks! The meal was provided in "courses"- first came the onion soup, which was alright; next came the house salad and dressing, which was awesome (I think the dressing was peanut based); a small appetizer followed- I ordered a portion of sauteed mushrooms; finally, the entree came- I'd ordered a filet mignon (medium) and shrimp. The portions were a bit on the small side, all of the food was amazing. The filet mignon was unfortunately chopped into small pieces, and was consequently significantly less juicy than a steakhouse filet mignon (I'm going by what my roommate told me, as this was my first experience having a filet mignon). I thought the atmosphere was awesome, but keep in my that it was my first Hibachi experience. All told, it was a wonderful meal and dining experience! read more

Well... I made the mistake of coming back. My friend from California insisted that we go to Sakura. The waiter was so slow and we only got our drinks refilled ONCE. Also, it was extremely hot in there and everyone was sweating, especially the habit chef... very unsanitary. He seemed like he was in a terrible mood and rushed our whole experience. He didn't even throw food at us. Just rude. He also didn't use sesame seeds... The infamous yum-yum sauce and ginger sauce has been changed, seems like they had to make some major budget cuts.They were very skimpy with the salad dressing as well. They had some sort of mucus looking substance in the miso soup too. Overall, I was extremely disappointed and very upset that my favorite childhood restaurant has changed for the worst. read more

The food here is delicious and it is always fun to watch the chef prepare your food in front of you in such an artistic manner. We have been taking our son here since he was a few months old and he always loves when the chef makes a fire with the oil or a volcano out of onions. Some kids can be afraid of the fire, but most chefs will tone it down a little if you request them to. read more

We typically go to the Sakura in Woodbridge but since we were in Fairfax, we stopped in to grab dinner. The waiting area was packed and then we were given a waiting period of 30 mins to an hour. 10 minutes later the waiting area cleared out and my party of 3 was the only ones left. They were reserving half the room for homecoming so basically we couldn't get a table. They pushed out waiting time to two hours so we left. My boyfriend and I came here for valentines day and were nervous when we walked in and saw how packed it was. We had a 7:00 reservation and were nervous that they were running over and we would have to wait a while. We waited for probably about 10, 15 minutes MAX and were seated promptly. This was fine with us as we saw people had been waiting a while without a reservation (their fault, who doesn't make a reservation for valentines day?) The drink I got, an apple martini, was very good! So many times I order drinks places and they skimp you on the alcohol. this was just not the case!! They loaded this up and made it the right way. I appreciated that a lot!! I am a vegetarian and they were SO accommodating to me! The server told me that the soup even had chicken broth and offered me two salads instead. I was very impressed because people are never that nice about it in restaurants. Lastly, the food was awesome!! The rice was the best hibachi rice I have ever had- I crave it often. We have been here many times for special occasions and things were pretty good. Today for Father's day we hadn't even finished eating and the kitchen staff came out and poured soap and chemicals on the grill and 5this was going on for 5 or 10 minutes.The soap and chemicals wafted up into our faces. They used lemons to try to hide the smell but that didn't work. I couldn't even finish my food as I was gagging. I asked to speak to the manager who didn't even take the time to talk to me. The server excuse was they didn't have enough chefs tonight. It was gross smelling all the chemicals like that. It was like churn you in and out since it was busy. This has always been a treat for us as a family but I won't waste my money here again. They didn't care at all and were ready to seat the next group to take their money. No apology at all. read more

We came here for my birthday dinner because we thought it would be a fun place to take the kids. My daughters ordered chicken and shrimp and me and my husband got the steak and chicken. My oldest immediately didn't like her shrimp and we swapped with her but I don't blame her. It was very a bit fishy and when I bit into one of my last pieces I could see it hadn't been deveined (ew). The steak was ok but there was bits of gristle left on it which is hard to manage with chop sticks. The chicken was fine. The hibachi chef was great and the kids had fun, but ultimately the food was just mediocre for the price. I guess it's been a very long time since we've eaten at a place like this but I just remember everything tasting better? It was very bland and not super fresh. Poor service and unfriendly for families with young children. While waiting to be seated, my 20 month old got away from me for a moment. I chased him down, as I picked him up he began to cry. The manager soon greeted me and informed me that I need to watch my child. This was his 5th visit to a Japanese steakhouse. I was quite shocked at the level of rudeness exhibited by the manager; he was completely out of line. After a very uncomfortable conversation I politely asked him to get away from me. I have never had an experience like that in a restaurant. The food was acceptable. Following dinner, none of the plates were removed, and after waiting for the check, I actually had to ask the manager to bring the check. I asked him to remove the plates, but he ignored my request. Possibly restaurant standards have changed, when I was in the food service industry, water glasses were immediately filled, and plates were immediately removed after the guest had finished their meal. I was extremely disappointed with my experience. If fact, I am so disappointed with my visit, that this is the first restaurant review that I have ever written. Sakura Japanese steak and seafood house is a longtime neighborhood favorite for families. Great environment if you're on a date and want to "impress" a new friend. I've been to excellent similar genre of restaurant and am not all in on this one because the food portions really are not what you're paying for or expecting. The cooks will entertain; I guess that's part of the allure. Frankly-, if I order chicken and shrimp, just give me your chicken breast portion and the same on the shrimp without cutting it up into enough pieces for 8 people. The rice serving is good, grilled vegetables are also good. Cocktails are so good here and nonalcohol drinks are also available. read more

Delish! I'm a huge fan of Japanese food and was so delighted to discover a traditional Japanese steak house in the area! Love the surf n' turf combo the best! The price is reasonable for the food since you get an appetizer, miso soup, Japanese salad (it tastes soo clean!), your entree + japanese fried rice, and a mountain of veggies. It's anywhere between $20 - $30 for all that food plus the entertainment value of the chef's cooking tricks! :) I only gave it 4 stars because the sushi is mediocre :/ But you don't really need to go there for the sushi...
