I am surprised about this hidden gem near my home. My wife and I never tried to eat here at Sakai. We always in this korean strip mall every 2 weeks for the grocery shopping, k bbq, and bone soup restaurants but never this japanese place. My wife checked all the reviews on Yelp early before we went there for lunch today. Little early at 11....nobody there, the chef was cleaning the floor. We know what to order at sushi restaurants, my wife and I chose 2 special rolls, Washington and Eel. For drinks, not many choices....no Sake. Very dissapointed. We got Sapporo beer that is why. The complementary salad was served first, and our rolls w hot miso soups. The roll size is smaller, but fresh, great rice, and the flavors for miso soup abd salad were great. I really liked eel rolls. And we ordered more yellowtail roll, 2 sushi, one yellowtail and another is eel. My fave is always Eel. My wife likes Washington, she likes salmon. She really liked Washington. Melted in your mouth! Overall the vibes are casual, any typical sushi bar concept. The chef as well as an owner is using the bar for making the sushi, rolls. The space is so tiny like take out vibe. The chef was answering the phone order, making rolls, sushi, serving our foods. Wow!!! One person does multi tasks. Water is self service, the coffee is free. Great little, hole-in-the-wall sushi spot. Located in a plaza with an Asian market and plenty of other restaurants. From rolls to sushi and sashimi, combos to satisfy any appetite, the fish is good and fresh. During my recent visits, I ordered the bentos, which include the chef's sushi choices and a few cut rolls. Also comes with salad and miso soup to start. For drinks, self-serve water and canned and bottled drinks are available, including soju and beer. The staff and service are kind, and prices are fairly reasonable. There are a few tables inside and a few patio seats. They also offer catering and delivery services. I found the sushi bar in the middle of restaurant but the chef was using to make sushi not the traditional sushi bar for the customers. I went over the menus including take out, decided 2 special rolls first, Washington and Eel rolls. The price was $16 for special rolls, $6 for sushi, and $8 for simple rolls such as CA rolls, yellowtail roll, and etc. We got first complementary salad, miso soup w eel roll and Washington rolls. And Sapporo beer for drink. They don't have hot Sake. Available only soda, Soju, and Japanese beers. Little dissapointed as Sake lovers. I liked the salad w soy sauce, little sour flovor to have me a good appetite. I started w miso soup then Washington, Eel rolls. The rolls are smaller than other restaurants. But tasted fresh, rice had great texture. I liked miso soup a lot. It was like my comfort soup after busy week. I ordered more yellowtail roll, 2 sushi, one Eel, anther Yellowtail. Everything was great. The chef looked like an owner, he was so busy to answer the take out orders, cook, and serve our orders. No extra server to help him!!!! I didn't see anyone. This place has been open for at least a year but still has a grand opening sign on it. Seems like a tactic to get new customers in, but didn't fool me. I shop at a Korean market next to this place on a regular basis so I was aware of this place. I just never felt the urge to try it because it's always empty. I finally decided to give it a try because my daughter wanted to get CA roll, and I was already getting groceries at the market. It's kind of hard to mess up CA roll so I figured it wouldn't hurt to try. The CA roll was fine, but pretty standard. However, I was disturbed by my albacore roll, which was grayish in color. Isn't albacore suppose to be pink? It probably means this place uses old fish. Halibut sushi I ordered tasted fine but was chewier than ones I had in the past. Price is good at just $4 for nigiri sushi, with the exception of toro, which is $8. All rolls are $5 and comes with miso soup, which is a decent deal. Other than good price, I don't see any other value to return. Place is quite small, and seems like a better place for take-outs than dine-in. read more
