I read through the current reviews, and I noticed that all but two of the reviews were 3-5 stars. Those other two rated it 1 star, and they were the only reviewers to complain about the fact that SG is cash only. I appreciate the convenience of plastic, but isn't it the customer's responsibility to check the door for that little MasterCard symbol? Once of my favorite places in the world, the Brenden Behan Pub, is cash only, and I could care less if someone stayed away because of it. That said, I love the Saigon Noodle. My family is European, and I only found out that there was more to ramen than the 10 cent packets, when I saw Tampopo a few years ago... Asian noodle soup, in all its variations is fascinating to me, and I love exploring it, but I'm no noodle connoisseur. I've never been disappointed with the quality of the food, and the value for your dollar is recession-licious! Takeout is great, because you can save your leftovers, and you'll get at least two meals out of it. I've never tried to do a "doggie bowl" for the soup after a sit-down meal. The service has always been exceptionally courteous, even though I don't speak Vietnamese. The menu is partially translated. I usually have no idea what I'm going to receive (apart from the type of protein included), but that's all part of the fun for me. If you're looking for regular pho (noodle soup), stick to the items near the beginning of the menu. If you have a cold, order the spicy beef soup, and prepare to breathe. read more

I think this two star rating absolutely describes my experience at Saigon Noodle--meh, I've experienced better. I haven't had a lot of Vietnamese food in my time, but I've been to a few places in NYC and Boston and I was more impressed by those experiences. I will admit I didn't have pho, so I can't compare Saigon Noodle's version to anywhere else. I had a spring roll (or it might have been an egg roll, not sure) and rice with shrimp and vegetables. The rice was ridiculously bland, I had to douse it with siriacha and soy sauce to get any flavor. The egg rolls were okay, kind of greasy, but tasty. read more

To me it is all about the food. And I just love the food at Saigon Noodle. I got there for lunch usually at least once each week. I order the same dish usually, lemongrass tofu with rice. They give you a good portion, and the food is delicious (and healthy!) every time. I work with some guys who don't like Saigon because of the service and atmosphere. Been meaning to try Saigon NV for s while. I'd go back for sure. I agree, no frills but nothing wrong either. Fried spring rolls were what they should be, seafood noodle soup was tasty. I have tried the Vietnamese restaurants in Malden. They all seem to be either a bit non-traditional Vietnamese or perhaps a bit too Americanized or Southeast Asianized meaning a so-so or fake experience depending on where you're from. The place inside 99 market is true Vietnamese but it only offers limited selections. Recently, I was surprised by Saigon NV as it definitely has potential. Several of their dishes were surprisingly quite authentic. I really wish at least one Vietnamese restaurant owners in Malden would learn from the decades of success of the New Dong Khanh restaurant in Chinatown that easily attracted a huge Asian and American loyal followings. It's all about the menu having selections for your target customers. read more

I loved my bowl of the pho here! I got a small bowl and finished it all-- it was soooo good. I got the meatball but next time I would try something else because the real beef slices were so good. The broth was perfect, the price was so reasonable, and the service I think was the fastest I've ever had ever at a restaurant. I went by myself for dinner but I also saw people there with friends or on a date night. The ambiance is really nice and would work for any setting. Anytime I need a pho' injection, (feeling like a cold is coming on) I call in my order, drive 5 minutes to this place and pay cash and scram. Not the cleanest or friendliest place to hang out, and certainly not the most consistent when it comes to food quality. I get the same thing every time; large chicken pho and goi tom (shrimp salad with cabbage)--authentic tasting comfort food right around the corner from me. Spicy bo kho? Check. Bun bo hue? Check. North of Boston? Check. AMAZING Vietnamnese food? Check. WooHoo! I'm a certified Vietnamnese food junkie living very north of Boston, where the Vietnamnese food scene within a 10 mile radius can only be considered Meh; a 4+ star worthy of bun bo hue usually which meant an exhaustively long journey of traffic fighting all the way down to Dorchester. On an exploratory mission to Malden this past Sunday, we found this place across the street from where we parked. Yelp had marked this place closed on Sundays but the neon Open sign was all we needed to invite ourselves in. I was surprised to spot two of my most favorite dishes - bun bo hue and bo kho on the menu (rarely found outside of Boston-Dorchester, and particular rare when they use the proper noodles), we ended up ordering one of each. I asked for a side of white rice instead of yellow noodles to go with my bo kho - accommodated with no problem. And after a short wait of 5 minutes, our food was ready for taste test. My bo kho soup was extremely spicy, rich and flavorful, just the way I like it. The beef was the perfect type for bo kho, lots of tendons attached to lean meat, the flavor is completely absorbed into the beef, so delicious yet much less oily than many of the bo kho I have eaten. The combination of scallions, basil and onions did its usual magic of heightening the herbal flavor of the heavenly soup. This is probably the most spicy bo kho I've ever had and its just magnificent. Boyfriend got the bun bo hue, which is made very properly with the right type of noodles and meat. They also have beef hotpot and bun rieu on the menu which are also rare and delicious finds usually only hosted in authentic Vietnamnese joints. While we were devouring our food, a few tables of customers poured in and the service is lightning fast for everyone. The staff is also very friendly and all smiles. When we were about to sit ourselves next to the door, we were told it may be too cold (in the winter) and were gently asked to moved to inner and warmer spots in the restaurant. Credit cards are accepted but tips must be in cash. There doesn't seem to be a size labeled on the menu (I think usually this implies a medium bowl), but you can ask for large or train size. CHicken pho - piping hot broth. Rich with double chicken fat. Plenty of noodles. Plenty of chicken. Meatballs with dumplings and egg noodles in pork broth is even better - a richer pork broth - also served piping hot. Lunch specials include a spring roll - ship and pork or vegetarian and a soda!! At lunch time, the place gets packed quickly and you may not be able to get a seat. If you ask politely, they may even make a "sandwich" for you. Go frequently. read more

I haven't been here for a while and my last review was a while ago. I have to say that I'm very disappointed with how it has changed. The thing I used to come here for was their porkchops and rice dish which I loved. It used to be this semi thick piece of bone in chop that was grilled and marinated to perfection served with a generous side of greens. I ordered the same thing and it was such a disappointment. Instead of the thick piece of bone chop they used to serve.. they give you this thin strips of pork. It had half the flavor and meat it previously had!! I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Their Pho too was blander than I remembered. I don't know what else to say about that. Finally I also had their house special fried rice and boy was it a let down. It was mushy and smelled very fishy to me. I didn't enjoy it at all though I will say that they gave a huge portion for it. I don't think I will be frequenting this place anymore. read more

This is one of the closest Vietnamese restaurants to where I live so I come here if I'm craving pho and don't want to drive all the way to Chinatown. The food is good; I wouldn't say great. But for what I want and close to home it satisfies me. Prices are average. Their roasted quail is good. I usually just come for the pho and order it with the sliced rare beef on the side. It's better when you put it in yourself as sometimes they leave it in too long and it overcooks. Service can be sketchy, even if there are only a few customers in there. I have no complaints overall and will most likely return again. I love Vietnamese food! read more

I'm a sucker for Pho but the service here sucks. He literally throws the menu at you when you sit down. He always serves me cold tea but when he approaches another table he asks them whether they want hot or cold tea. I usually order the same thing number 31 seafood pho. For the most part relatively cheap but the service could be a lot better and I wish the place was cleaner. Only one waitress on duty and tons of empty tables to sit at. Idk if they cooked the dinner in sesame oil ( which I'm allergic to seeds and nuts) but it was not on their website our menu. A few hours after eating it I got an allergic reaction and had to go to the emergency room. This restaurant needs to be descriptive about what they're cooking their food with! I visit Saigon Noodles when I'm too lazy to leave the neighborhood for pho. It's reasonably priced, $7 for the large beef noodle soup. The amount of beef, tendons and all the other goodies is a bit lacking, and the service is terrible. You definitely have to remind them a couple of times to get your glass of water, although they seem to remember orders for sodas and/or beer. One thing I have noticed though, is how quickly the hot bowl of pho arrives at your table! I swear, I received my pho in less than 5 minutes once!
