Disclosure: I have visited Saigon Block 5+ times.
Saigon Block is a traditional Vietnamese restaurant that is known for having an exceptional dish called Ca Nuong (baked catfish).
My Overall Rating - 3 1/2 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Food, Return)
Atmosphere - Saigon Block has a nice contemporary feel. The booths and tables are well spread apart, and the tables and chairs are nice quality (this is a big deal for traditional Vietnamese restaurants). My biggest complaint is that the temperature is always way too high. During the summers it can be an uncomfortable place. Also, when it gets busy there's no area inside to wait. Only a bench or too outside. If only the AC worked better in the summer...... 1/2 Star.
Service - Service is ok. Nothing great but nothing bad either. Once your order is taken and food delivered, the waiter rarely check-up on you. This is the norm at Asian restaurants it seems. The good thing is that they do have a center waiter station where you go to pay the bill, and you can easily flag someone down. They also do take out at the counter and they do a great job boxing up to go items. 1/2 Star.
Food - Sometimes, you go to a restaurant to eat one type of dish. We come to Saigon Block for their ca nuong, which is a seasoned baked catfish that is served with rice paper, pickled vegetables, lettuce, assorted herbs, and dipping sauce. The fish is crispy on the outside, warm and cooked perfectly on the inside, and topped with green onions, scallions, and peanuts. One fish can feed 4 - 6 people, so order in a group! They also have banh hoi (pancake noodles) served with choa tom (grilled minced shrimp and sugar cane), nem (Vietnamese pork sausage), and bo la lot (grilled beef wrapped in leaves). We don't bother with the other offerings as they're pretty average. If you come here GET THE CA NUONG. 1 1/2 Star.
Will I Return? - Yes! Like I said, I come here for one dish and one dish only. I can get decent Vietnamese food in other places, but I can't get great Ca Nuong that's this good. I've even taken it to go, and they do a great job boxing it up. 1 Star.
My Yelp Rating Scale (Sum of all parts):
1 Star - Atmosphere - Is it a cool dive? Perhaps an upscale place? No matter the type, atmosphere plays a big part and I'll give a star if I like it or thinks it has great charm.
1 Star - Service - You can have a great meal with bad service. But that's also what can make a five star joint drop to four. It's important to the dining experience that service is great and on point.
2 Stars - Food - I'll award up to two stars for the food, since this is the main reason we dine out. Sometimes the extra star is given for value, but it's really all about the food.
1 Star - Will I come back? - If I know for a fact I'll return, I'll give this a star. A place has to make an impression for me to return.
Each Category can be given up to 1 star except food (2 stars) because I consider all these categories important to the overall dining experience. I will sum them up to provide my final Yelp score. read more
