As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a friendly staff right away. Their dining area has a nice ambiance. Their menu items have pretty good selections with pictures. we have not been eating out much, or even doing take away. But, we got a "hankering" for some Vietnamese food last night, so pick up a couple dishes. It is difficult to bear their noodle bowls. My husband chose the one with a mix of grill meat and shrimp, plus egg rolls. I am rather partial to the all egg roll bowl. We also added #79, fired squid with garlic. Each food was cooked perfectly. All of the fresh ingredients were cold and crisp. The squid, especially, was coated with a light batter then fried to just the right doneness. The squid we soft and tender. As they should be. My boyfriends combination pho didn't taste right either, there was definitely something off about the meat/tendons. My tofu noodle bowl was tiny compared to other pho places, the tofu was too salty and deep-fried to death, and it lacked vegetables. From a variety of different rolls to hot pot to comfort food such as canh chua, ca kho to, and suon ram man. There are many noodle bowls such as bun bo hue and my favorite, hu tieu ko, which is a traditional noodle bowl served with rice noodles and all the fixings like ground pork, bbq pork, shrimp, and crab along with a bowl of pork broth served on the side. I haven't had banh canh in awhile and I was so happy that I ordered it! The noodles were the right texture of chewiness and the broth was the right texture of thickness. My husband had the specialty rice noodle bowl and while it was not bad, the meat served seemed dry, almost overcooked, but not too terrible. There is plenty of parking as it is located in a supermarket parking lot. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The menu shows a picture of a hefty nice tender rib, with a $6 price add on, but the real thing left me confused. (Mind you, $6 is more than half an entire bowl of pho!) Their pho is a little sweeter with more aromatic spices which is a welcome departure from my go-to savory simple pho on Federal. In fact, everything on the menu is a little sweeter here (I'm chalking this up to regional difference). I am totally addicted to their #14 medium-rare beef salad (Gi Bò Tái Chanh Nng). It's a huge pile of amazing fresh vegetables like red bell peppers, basil, cucumber, daikon, and carrot all tossed in a really nice fish sauce dressing. The beef is tender and marinated to drool-inducing proportions. It's so filling and a clever way to trick my body into meeting my veggie quota. If it's an assortment you want, get the #36 combo rice noodle bowl (Bún Đc Bit). It's an easy-peasy primer to their offerings delivering lots of flavor without a gamble. The portions are generous and the service is overall average (friendly but sometimes a little slow). Everything I've tried so far is good. OK, I know that it was a huge shock when Kim Ba closed. After all, it had been around for many years and was famous for its range of homestyle Vietnamese dishes. But guess what? Saigon Bistro's now in that exact spot, and I'm betting you'll love them too. Let's dive in! The closest English translation for Goi Dac Biet is probably "combination salad" and indeed, this intermingling of squid, jellyfish, pig ear and shrimp may at first seem curious - but after a bite or two, your "hmmmm"s will start sounding more like "mmmmm"s. In a similar vein, snails are much prized in Vietnamese cuisine (as a former French colony this may not be too surprising) and Saigon Bistro offers several different ways to try them - for example, drenched in silky coconut sauce, or bobbing in a tamarind-kissed hotpot with some Bap Chuoi (banana blossom) and Rau Muong (water spinach) to keep them company. Canh Ga Chien Nuoc Mam, or plump fried chicken wings with a fish sauce-based dressing, is another permutation you probably weren't expecting to see. But have I ever steered you wrong? I stopped in a few days ago for a quick lunch and ordered a noodle bowl with grilled chicken and eggroll. Service was efficient and friendly. The food I had was good, but not great. Everything in the bowl was fresh, but my main issue was with the small amount of herbs. I'm used to noodle bowls coming with a good amount of cilantro and mint. The menu said that mint is available upon request. Ok, I get that not everyone likes it. So I asked for it and my noodle bowl came out with about half a dozen or so small mint leaves and no full sprigs of cilantro ( I think there was a very small amount of cilantro chopped into in the bowl, tho). What makes a noodle bowl really good (for me, at least) is a lot of herbs. I suppose I could have asked for more, but I figured that since I had already asked for mint and received such a sad amount that why bother. Like I said, everything in the bowl was good and fresh, but it just wasn't what I was expecting especially in an area that has so many competing Asian restaurants. Also, I'm one of those uncoordinated people that can't get food to my mouth with chopsticks so I use a fork. They provide plastic forks and spoons for dine-in. And plastic cups for water. Randomly picked this spot to eat because we did not want to wait an hour and a half for Tasty Pot. Once I walked into the restaurant it smelled so good so that was a good sign.
