I see a trend. Look at the last few months of reviews. Something changed, something got broken, and if they don't get it right soon I'm not sure the place can recover. The service (two pleasant young people who I truly believe care and are trying) is abhorrent. There is no process, no structure- no pattern of work to manage the floor. Imagine running a three legged race while trying to do the egg on the spoon...in a crowded room. I have never run a restaurant, a lifetime ago I worked in a few. I have run organizations since then, both large and small. In order to have success the resources have to match the mission (or at least be close). At busy times Saigon needs to add at least one more person. That person would take/manage call in orders, cashier duty and seat people (oversee the front of house). The two servers would do just that/and clear tables. I didn't get to see the kitchen, I did see the cook. At his extremely, advanced, experienced, wisened stage in life, a prep/fry station cook would likely help quite a bit. When we arrived on a Friday night at 1745 by 1800...Saigon had been overrun! People came in after us and got food before we did. Our appetizer didn't come out together (for example another table got the same rolls at the same time although they arrived 15 minutes after us) We had two servers when we didn't need them and no server when we could have used one. I see people raving about the food. I will accept the chance that we both simply ordered the wrong things. The spring roll and fried spring roll were pretty decent (though late). My wife got vegetable lo mein that was truly uninspired. Somewhat limp, non-authentic, oily noodles, with a lazy boring mix of broccoli,bamboo shoots? mushroom? onion, celery. I think I did better in college with fettuccine noodles and a can of Chun King vegetable chop suey. (Okay well maybe not and that was just other circumstances influencing that dish's "impact".) I must reserve special comment for my dish. You know how real estate pictures/descriptions are never quite reality, dating profiles are as good as the first month of knowing them, public park descriptions....well you get the point. I "fell for" Com Tam Bi Suon Cha- Special crushed rice w. pork chop marinated in garlic lemongrass & soy sauce, eggcake, shredded pork & pork skin on the side. Doesn't that sound spectacular? I thought so. What came out was two thin salty pork chops and some white rice from a rice cooker. The "egg cake" was interesting, a tasty little cube (literally) of dressing like substance. There was no shredded pork and the pork skin was questionable. I ordered it. I should have done more research. I don't blame them. I just don't think we will be back unless I see a change in the downward trend on the reviews. I am so disappointed because I wanted to like it here. While I love the food here, there is a female server who for some reason won't serve military members in uniform like she does her other customers. She will deliberately come and take things from the table, give them to other customers and not even ask if we were still using the items. When I was just in there recently my coworkers and I sat down for an hour, got checked on once and hadn't even received our food. While other customers who were there 20 min or less received their food shortly after they ordered and she checked on them constantly. I have gone in there out of uniform and the service is completely different. I will be requesting a different server every time or will be walking out from no Update: The last couple of times I have been in there, I have not seen her so I'm assuming other customers had an issue with her too. Best grilled pork compare to all Vietnamese restaurants in the bi-state. Best goi coun ( spring rolls) and Cha gio (fried egg rolls) that are wrapped in rice paper. I have been eating here for many years. One of my favorite is number 118 Bun Thit Nuong Cha Gio and 168 Tom Vi Sat Sizzling Shrimp - Shrimp and vegetables in a sizzling garlic butter sauce. Their rice dishes are wonderful also. Both Vietnamese and Chinese dishes are very good. My friends and my family are hooked on this place. The owners are very gracious and friendly. Be patient if they are short handed. By the way crab Rangoon and fried rice are very good here also. read more

This place will satisfy your cravings for Vietnamese food in a pinch, but it's just ok. I've had the two varieties of the beef pho, the pho ga (chicken noodle) and the Bun Bo Hue (spicy beef noodle soup). The main issue is that they're all just a little bland as compared to what I expect. Even the Bun Bo Hue - which is supposed to be both spicy and savory- was a little short on flor and spice. There's not too many places in the metro east to get Vietnamese, so I'll likely continue to visit occasionally. But I can't give it a ringing endorsement. read more

Thank goodness for Yelp! Family was wanting Pho, but not wanting to drive 45 min to Missouri to hit our normal place. Checked Yelp and found Saigon. I'm truly surprised something this good was in a strip mall in Belleville. First and foremost, the "chips and salsa" threw us for a loop. Crispy shrimp chips fried like cracklin and basically pico de gaio. You will want a bag to go! Appetizer chosen was the "crepe" just try it. Fresh sprouts inside a thin pancake like deliciousness. Dinner consisted of Each of us getting 3 different types of Pho and a lomein for the young one. This was some tastiness all around. All of the pho was as good as any I had at the big locations. Service was friendly and extremely helpful since none of us could figure out proper technique to eat the appetizer. No matter we were the last customers at closing, the staff was friendly and seemed genuinely happy to be there. I ended up at Saigon on a Wednesday for lunch. Who knew there was a Vietnamese restaurant in Belleville, IL? After we sat down the waitress brought out a plate of shrimp/rice chips with a salsa type relish. It was crispy and refreshing. I've never seen this before. I ordered the Hoanh Thanh Dac Biet (Special Wonton Soup - BBQ pork, shrimp, squid, wonton, and vegetables.) It was excellent. The broth had a depth of flavor and my favorite part were the wontons. They almost tasted like a soup dumpling! My lunch date ordered the Com Chien Duong Chau (Duong Chau Fried Rice - Shrimp, chicken, pork, beef, Chinese sausage & fried rice.) He asked for them to make this a bit spicy and they did. He enjoyed it very much. The place is out of date and in a really obscure little strip center. It was very satisfying and I really liked both dishes that we had though. I would not hesitate to return for lunch! read more

So I moved to Belleville almost a year ago. As a vegetarian it's been almost impossible to go out to dinner, and the places I can go are limited greatly. While Saigon doesn't have a huge vegetarian menu, what it does have is amazing!! As a start it's the cleanest place I've been to since I've been here. Not clean but spotless. The service was awesome!! It's a family owned business and they are super nice!!! The location is odd and it looks like a by-gone strip mall but they are there with great hours. Inside there is plenty of seating, casual with tables and booths. Now the most important part, the food. Amazing!!!! I tasted two plates as we shared and the plate looked like something on a commercial where you see it and say it's never like that. Yes it is!! Many veggies cooked to perfection. It's like every color you could have was on my plate. It was awesome!! Sauce was perfect and they are known for the noodles. I got rice noodles. The price is really on point, you could spend the same at Burger King. I can't say enough about this place except that I very much recommend it and it will definitely be my go to place from now on!!!! read more

Been here twice and loved it both times! The only downside is that service is a little slow. But we're willing to wait. Pho - very very good. The meatballs weren't my favorite but overall it was very good. Bun Bo Hue - my new favorite. You should seriously try it. Just enough heat, I'll be ordering again. The food was delicious and fresh. The service was very good as our server kept checking on us. The restaurant is VERY clean, which is important to me. If I'm going out to eat I want to enjoy clean surroundings, knowing the kitchen won't make me sick. (Which has happened in the past in other restaurants.) Overpriced and underwhelming. Apparently you need to ask if the current menu items are available or not...I ordered the Broken Rice combination plate only to be told they don't include the pulled pork, pork skin, or the actual broken rice after it was served to me. There was a hand written sticker that said "no longer serving egg cake" so I was at least expecting that, but not to be served only a pork chop and an over-cooked egg with regular white rice. They also messed up my boyfriend's order by making the wrong dish, but I don't usually complain about the actual service. I will say they didn't offer any substitutions for the missing items. If you're craving pho, better to make the trip to St. Louis then visit this place. read more

We've been coming here for years. We had sunday lunch here this week and as always the food was awesome. My husband had BBQ Beef Salad and Beef on Skewers (104 & 108) I had Viet. Spring Rolls & Special Pan Seared Noodle (136 & 103) It was all so fresh and delicious. The staff are always friendly and we just love this place. We love the Vietnamese and mostly order that but their Chinese is the best around. We drive farther to get their Chinese then more local spots. read more

We've come here quite a bit now and have really enjoyed everything we've tried. A dozen dishes each, my husband and I. The sweet and sour chicken is a great balance of sweetness that isn't too gelatinous like some I've had at other places. The crab Rangoons have a delightful crisp. For a large order of 8, to only pay $4.... YES please! The soups have decent veggie, meat, noodle balance and ratio. The fried chicken dishes are not over-battered or over fried. It is very hard to review this place. Over the last several months they have been remodeling. It is now a very accommodating place. Everything is new and clean. I found this place because of 2 other yelpers Tim and Cheri. I am not a big fan of pho generally, but theirs is exceptional. You get a huge bowl of spicy broth and noodles. It comes with basil, bean sprouts, jalapeño, lime, hot sauce, and hoisin sauce for flavoring. I usually get the 122a and add meatballs. They provide these awesome shrimp toast with a cilantro flavored salsa. It is delicious. I have paid for worse appetizers. The toasts kind of do a snap crackle Pop when the salsa is added. The aLso make Great spring rolls. These at very good. They have ground habanero pepper! This is different than the usual wimpy red pepper at other Asian restaurants. They lemon grass noodle dish that the name escapes me that I have tried and liked. Finally they have many traditional chinese offerings if Vietnamese is not your thing. Wow- I had a great experience here! It is in an unassuming shopping center. I would never have known to even look in here if it weren't for Yelp. I told the server that I wanted to order something vegetarian with NO fish sauce and he pointed out a number of things on the menu that could be made that way. I really appreciated that he made me aware of exactly what his Pho broth was made of (pork stock) and that he knew which dishes had fish sauce and oyster sauce in them. I was initially disappointed that I couldn't get soup, but my disappointment evaporated as soon as he introduced me to the veggie options on the menu. He recommended a delicious lemongrass tofu dish and rice paper rolls filed with veggies/tofu as an app. It is a family-run business, a husband-and-wife team. Saigon is probably the best Vietnamese restaurant in the metro-east. If you're not familiar with, or don't care for Vietnamese cuisine, they also prepare exceptional Chinese food! The menu is extensive to say the least! I love Vietnamese soup, Pho. The pho here is some of the best I've ever had! I do enjoy an occasional trip over to the city for Pho Grand or Mai Lee's. But Saigon makes it possible to have outstanding Pho, without the travel and traffic. The owner, Miss Ngoc, is extremely friendly and accommodating to all of her customers. All meals include shrimp crackers and sauce. The lunch menu is a popular favorite, because you get so much for such a reasonable price. All lunch specials come with soup/salad and an egg roll or crab Rangoon. You're stuffed before ever taking a bite of your main course. And for $5.99, it just can't be beat! Everything I've had here is absolutely delicious! But do try the Pho, which is a hearty clear broth with pork or beef, and noodles. You'll be brought a dish of fresh, basil, bean sprouts, lemon grass, cilantro, and peppers to mix into your soup. It's a great experience and tastes quite wonderful.
