So glad to have Grand Bistro back in my life! The food is just as good as I remember from when it was Pho Grand, and honestly, the service when I went with friends last week was incredible. I knew they don't take reservations and won't seat an incomplete party, but I still got there a little early just to see if we could grab a table for five. I was surprised (in a good way) when they seated me before everyone else arrived. I even told the hostess I didn't mind waiting, but she encouraged me to go ahead and sit, which was really nice. Our server was super friendly and made sure I was taken care of while I waited. As my friends started arriving, he was quick to get them settled in too. We started with some non-alcoholic drinks and spent some time chatting before diving into the menu. It was honestly hard to pick just one thing, so I went with both the chicken pho and fried rice. I knew I wouldn't finish it all, but I really wanted both. Once we ordered, everything moved smoothly--our server checked in, made sure drinks were filled, and kept things organized. When the food came out, everything looked amazing and tasted just as good. Of course, with all the catching up we were doing, it took us a while to finish, but there was no rush at all. When we were ready, he brought the checks and was more than happy to split them out (always appreciate that!). Before leaving, I ordered a to-go meal for my husband and asked for a box for my leftovers. Our server actually took my plate and packed everything up in the back, which I wasn't expecting but really appreciated. He also brought out the to-go order right when it was ready. How happy am I to learn this place reopened with a new name? We were here within the hour of learning it had reopened (was Pho Grand). And it lived up to our expectations. Love the new cocktail bar they added. It take away some seating however people can eat at bar too. We ordered cocktails while waiting for our table which took only a few minutes. My husband tried their version of an old-fashioned which used both bourbon and rum!!! It was good but he said definitely a "sipper". They have a full bar and much better wine selection now too. Starters for us were a bowl of wonton soup and the spring rolls. Both were good but rolls a little rubbery to me. The highlight of our meals was charbroiled pork. Pho-mazing! Lovely mouthfeel with the broth, a perfect bowl on a winter storm night. Try the Pho Dac Biet along with a mix of hoisin sauce, chili garlic and the chili crisp - this combo was a good replacement for my usual hoisin sauce/sa té combo at pho restaurants. The pork eggrolls had an unusual surprise - fresh sliced mushrooms (in case you were wondering why the crust was darker in hue). We chatted briefly with Jeff, the owner, and learned a ton about the restaurant's history and re-launch. It's a good sized venue, with great lighting and seating plus excellent service. I can't seem to find it anywhere near my house these days.I was near downtown today and swung by the only place my most recent menu searches listed it. "Swung by" as in 30 minutes completely out of my way. So glad I did! The location is bistro modern and welcoming. They were super busy and only using the lower level of the restaurant at this time. My friend had Vietnamese pho noodles and i had their vermicelli with egg rolls. We would have given another star except that I wanted a vegetarian Pho and I they do not have it. Instead I got a tofu curry and rice dish. It was good, but nothing special. My wife had the gluten free Pho with beef. She asked for more of the condiments (first batch was just ok size-wise) and was given cilantro only, not the other items. They did get the food out incredibly fast though. So for us, this latest endeavor was not so notable. There seemed to be a slight attitude by the staff that implied, hurry up, order, we have people to get to.... Son of the previous owners reopened!! I was super excited to hear about the reopening and the food did not disappoint. The wings were a fish sauce friend wing and soo good. Definitely worth a try. Most locals probably know Pho Gran before pandemic. They then closed a few years ago because the owner wanted to retire. Now they re-opened as Grand Bistro. The original owner still helps out there so the foods are as good as before. Many choices. Service is prompt. Due to the space limitations there are not many tables inside. Wonderful news! Pho Grand (an STL staple) has been re-opened by the original family in their original location this month as Grand Bistro. I enjoyed their pho dac biet (beef noodle with various cuts of meat), their pho ga (chicken based pho noodle soup), as well as the banh xeo (savory Vietnamese crepe with pork and shrimp). It was tasty, and my only minor gripe was I wish they had given us more basil for the noodle and crepe dish (as well as another slice of lime). We also enjoyed their Vietnamese coffee drinks. The re-opening is very welcomed by the community. Already for Sunday late lunch, there was a decent line, and we waited about 30 minutes; fortunately, they have a waiting area upstairs.
