This was my first experience at the newly reopened, remodeled Sagres and I am very happy that the whole experience was excellent from start to finish.
Service - The service began before we even got there. We had reservations for six people on Friday night at 7:00 PM, but we had all congregated early and were hungry, so I called at 6:10 to see if they could take us early. We were told yes, they could, and to head on over. We were seated right away and bread was placed on the table. Our waiter introduced himself, welcomed us, handed out menus and told us about the specials. I have to say, just with this, this place was already winning in comparison to a lot of other Portuguese restaurants, so so far, so good. Throughout the whole meal, we were brought our drinks and food in a timely manner, were checked on a couple of times (it was very busy, so I'm pretty impressed that we weren't forgotten. Again, that's been my experience at too many Portuguese restaurants). He was even sweet enough to take a picture of us when he saw we were attempting a group "selfie." Another gentleman, who I assume is the manager, came by a couple of times to check if everything was okay and to bring us our take-home boxes.
Worth noting: Even though there was a line out the door, we did not feel rushed even after we had finished and paid. We didn't linger too long, but still, we never felt any pressure to get out of there.
Atmosphere - This place is gorgeous! Modern and chic, but with a touch of old-school European feel here and there. There were lots of tables, all white cloth-covered, but it wasn't cluttered. The bar is beautiful! The bathroom was clean, too. I only want to warn that the floor seemed kind of slippery. I felt really unsteady; it caught me off guard.
Food - I can usually gauge a Portuguese restaurant by its carne de porco à Alentejana, so that's what I got. The rest of the party got either bife à portuguesa or a cod special. I tried a bite or two of my hubbie's bife and thought it was a little dry on the outside, but it was perfectly cooked on the inside. Everyone was very happy with their bifes, so maybe my mouth was just biased because my meat was in sauce. My carne de porco, oh my carne de porco! Loved it! The meat was lean and tender and cooked perfectly. So often this dish is ruined by too much salt, but that was not the case here. The molho was wonderfully flavorful. And there were a good amount of littlenecks, too. Plenty for dinner and leftovers for lunch the next day. My MIL loved her bacalhau and finished the whole thing (which, she said, rarely happens).
Worth noting: The bifes are sirloin and THICK! And while [I thought] the bife à portuguesa didn't have too much sauce, I believe the bife à Luis is actually the one made in vinho de alhos (garlic wine sauce). These are not the pounded, thin steaks seen elsewhere. These may be the thickest steaks I've ever seen. They were glorious!
Value - I expected the prices to be sky-high considering it's a "new" restaurant, but I was really surprised at how affordable most of the dishes were! Even with drinks, desserts, and coffee, the bill was super reasonable.
Overall, I'm thrilled that there is a Portuguese restaurant in Fall River that is great in all aspects. Unfortunately, that's rare. Can't wait to go back! Maybe lunch at the bar next time... read more
