Food - I so badly wanted to give this one a higher rating but unfortunately I can't. For an appetizer I had the kale soup, it was very oil forward it had no potatoes, no meat just kale and broth which I found different than many other kale soups I've had. For my main dish I ordered the shrimp Mozambique which was extremely bland and over cooked, the white rice and fries were great! I also ordered a pitcher of sangria it tasted like water, as if it was diluted, the server was nice enough to ask the bartender to remake it but it came out the same. Was hoping to have a great experience like we did 15 years ago but it was not the case. Food took over 2 hours to arrive and when it did medium-rare steaks came Well done. Another steak dinner had two starches and no vegetables. When owner asked how our meal was we shared the facts. No apology and no attempt to improve our experience. Madeira a nice Portuguese restaurant with Indians outdoor seating. I was with a group of 3 friends we opted for an outdoor dinner. The ambiance was relaxing, the sound of the waterfall felt tranquil. I would dress casual dressy. The margarita drinks were good. The food from appetizers to our main dish was also very good. We did have a flan for dessert and unfortunately that came up short with taste. They do have a parking and also an upstairs for event planning. Our waitress which I can't remember her name was very sweet and attentive. I would say the owner also came to our table which was nice but I felt he was a bit much toward the waitress regarding her attentiveness to our table which was perfect. We were introduced to Madeira a couple of years ago by our boat dock peeps who are of Portuguese heritage. It was love at first bite! We have been back a number of times over the last several years. The restaurant is HUGE - bar, bar area seating, main restaurant, upstairs event space, outside dining. And it can be VERY BUSY... especially on Friday and Saturday nights. We tend to go for weekend lunch or early for dinner to avoid the crowds. Wines are reasonably priced and I am a huge fan of the vinho verde - a light white wine with a hint of effervescence. Start with the Caldo Verde - a creamy Portuguese soup made with linguiça sausage, kale and potatoes. My favorite is the spicy and saucy Shrimp Mozambique. Sauteed shrimp in Malagueta and Chablis with a side of veggies and Portuguese fries - thinly sliced fried potatoes. Malagueta peppers are small, tapered firecrackers that slowly build up heat as you eat them! Hubby's favorite is the house specialty: Espetada a Madeirense. Sirloin or filet mignon on a sword. Let me say that again - it is literally meat on a sword. The server needs to set up a stand for your meat sword! The presentation is awesome and the meat is always perfectly cooked. Haven't been here in years, but remember it being one of the best Portuguese restaurants around. So, when we decided to get a bunch of family and friends together for a celebration, this was one of the first places that came to mind. We went on a Saturday night with a very large group, nearly 30 people. We had made a reservation several weeks ago for which they required a deposit. They made sure to seat our party together and were very accommodating in terms of separating checks. Service was a little slow, but they did only have one server taking care of all of us. Considering the size of our party, he did an excellent job keeping track of orders and correctly billing everyone. The food was very good. Drinks were a little inconsistent; nice and strong, but I think the ratios were off on some of them. Restaurant was very noisy, but there were several other large groups celebrating that evening as well. Everything was clean. Most of the staff was very nice, though we did have somebody who was pretty rude to one of the guests, which I wasn't too happy about. Otherwise, everything was fantastic. If it were closer, I would definitely come here more often because the food is quite good. It's a little on the pricey side, but worth it for the quality in my opinion. read more

I purchased a 1/2 tray of "Mariscada", paid $91. There was not a single piece of lobster, not a single scallop and no fish! It was FULL of what may be some type of lagostino, a "handful" of small shrimp, mussels, little necks and rubberized calamari. That was it to the seafood. None of it tasted fresh. The aluminum pan was so full of liquid -filled to the top of the pan that it spilled all over my cloths an my car seat!!! Pan was 2/3 liquid. Tasted more like Tomato soup. Absolutely terrible!! We ended up discarding the bulk of it!! Their food used to be great!! Drastic changes, perhaps due to economy. I won't go back! read more

Ambience: Nice place, clean, well-kept. Outdoor seating available if the weather is nice. Service? Excellent! Our server "Tony" was great, and had extensive knowledge of the menu, and was an absolute pleasure to converse with. The food? It's good. Better than average, but not exceptional. Very good menu, lots of Portuguese classics. We started with Little necks in a butter / garlic wine sauce. Drinks, we had a glass of wine and a few red sangrias. My dining partner had the "sea & land" entree, which was shrimp and Filet in a Marsala sauce. I had a special, which was some sort of fresh / whole white fish cooked Portuguese style. Went to the Maderia restaurant the other day. I go there often when in RI. I was very disappointed by the fact that the prices have gone up, the quantity and quality has gone down. The pork and little necks dinner portion was much smaller than it used to be. It had a few banana peppers instead of gardenia, and would charge an extra $3 if you wanted more bread. Price is one thing but to raise the price ,cut the portions, and charge for bread is not a good thing. I think I'll try O Dinis restaurant near by next time. Shame on them ! Food was fabulous!! But the real star of the show was the bartender Katelynn she was superb, funny, and attentive she had us laughing the whole time! You forget sometimes about the local places. Had not been here in years, but stopped in for a drink, ended up staying for apps. House wings were perfect, went back for dinner few days later, Portuguese steak exactly as I ordered it. Friendly but not overbearing staff, extremely comfortable atmosphere and surprisingly pretty inside. I don't think I've ever had colder beer either. That said, the older males talk about you in Portuguese, and you don't need a firm grasp of the language, they're obvious about it while they're sitting at the end of the bar with the owner. Today, I tried Madeira. The place is huge, the tables are spacious and the staff were all pleasant. They have ample parking as the place is desiring to cater events. We ordered Camarao Alinho and their Mariscada for two. Both dishes are kind of soupy, but the flavor was light in both dishes. In the Camarao Alinho, the shrimp were pretty small and the garlic was fresh, but the sauce should have been reduced further in my opinion. The Mariscada which I have had quite a few times at different spots in NJ came across more like a bouillabaisse to me than the Mariscada dish I was accustomed to in NJ. There was nothing wrong with the seafood in it, all nice fresh and the half lobster was dense with a reasonable tail and claw. It contained squid, clams mussels, shrimp, and some fish plus what I think was imitation crab. Overall it wasn't bad, but it was far from the versions in NJ that made you want to lick the plate. read more

I wish I could have given it 2 1/2 stars. The atmosphere was lovely and quiet and the service was great. It was the main food that I didn't love. . We went for lunch and it was relatively quiet. It was too hot to eat outside, so we sat socially distanced in the restaurant. While we looked at the menu, our server brought us fresh bread. Awesome! It was so good with butter! We had to consciously stop so we could not be too full for our meal. I love Shrimp Mozambique. I try it at every restaurant that offers it and so I was excited to try it here. So of course4 I ordered the Camarao Mozembique ($15.95) - sautéed shrimp in a spicy wine Mozambique sauce. I chose yellow rice and roast potatoes as my 2 sides. The Mozambique sauce was good and I could taste the wine and siracha in it. However, the shrimp were small and overcooked. I would either sauté the shrimp less or increase the size of the shrimp. The yellow rice was just ok - not much flavor and I just didn't like the potatoes. I had to add salt as they had not flavor. They were a bit too roasted for me and so were dry, not fluffy. I ended up eating the shrimp, and leaving the potatoes and most of the rice. My friend ordered Filetes Dourados ($15.95) which was fried battered filet of scrod topped with seafood sauce. She had roasted potatoes and steamed vegetable with hers. She enjoyed hers and said it was very flavorful. She also loved the roasted potatoes. She thought the fresh vegetables were ok, not much seasoning on them. I loved dipping the bread into the Mozambique sauce so ended my meal with the bread. The food to me was just OK. Based on the reviews I had been really looking forward to it, so I am not sure I would go again. I would try another Portuguese restaurant in RI/MA. read more

Flew up to visit wife who was working close by. We did dinner here due to it looking busy and was close to where we were staying. Everything was great and my wife is extremely picky about her food. A hidden gem in East Providence. This is my second visit. Each time has been amazing. I had the traditional grilled cod fish with boiled potatoes, mixed salad, and flan. My spouse is Portuguese and we travel to Portugal quite often. This is about as real and tasty as it gets here in the United States! The service was also superb. If you are looking for a traditional Portuguese meal this is the place to go. If the weather is nice, the next time I visit I will try eating outside in the water themed courtyard, it looked very nice. read more

This restaurant has always been my favorite Portuguese food go too place but it seemed to have slipped. The service is still good and the atmosphere hasn't changed in forever. The food has definitely changed but not for the good. My favorite dish is the Polvo a Madeira (stewed octopus). It wasn't as good as it was in the past. First time here. Great spot with a dining room, bar/casual dining area and an ornate patio area with a waterfall, bridges and seating areas that look like boats. There is a function room too. I had the bife com cogumelos with saffron arroz and milho frito. The huz (who's father was literally from the island of Madeira) had caldo verde and bife a casa. Of course we also had the chouriço bombiero. The steaks were cooked perfectly medium...pink and tender. The mushroom wine sauce on my steak was delicious. Per the huz, the caldo verde kale soup was delicious as was his steak. The chouriço was quality (albeit a little too salty for my taste). I also felt the milho frito was little too salty for my personal taste. The service was attentive and helpful. Our waiter was excellent and even helped me on my pronunciation LOL. With portuguese music playing the background and the fountains and waterfall vibes, this was a great spot for a casual late lunch on a saturday afternoon. read more

Went there with my girlfriend because she wanted to try Portuguese food. For starters we had the chicken wings and their calamari. The wings were typical of good fried wings, and the calamari were large rings that were seasoned nicely. The spicy house sauce that came with the calamari complimented it very well. For entrees we got the steak with Madeira mushroom sauce and the carne Alentejana which is marinated pork with roasted potatoes and littlenecks. Both were excellent! The steak and pork were nicely cooked and the sauces on both were delicious. I would definitely recommend both, you won't be disappointed. For dessert we got the flan and rice pudding. The rice pudding had a nice flavor with a subtle taste of cinnamon. The flan had an undertone of liqueur though none is listed in the description. Despite that it was a good Portuguese style flan. Service was very attentive. It wasn't too busy the night we went, but we were checked on periodically and well taken care of. I came here with a reservation with my mother for Mother's Day, the place wasn't packed, but it was busy. I ordered the steak plate, which I liked and my mother ordered the cod fish plate, which she didn't like because the fish was too salty. The reason for the 2 stars was because the service was horrible, a few times I finished my soda and the waitress would walk by looking at the empty drink and coming back 10 minutes later to see if I wanted another drink. Also it took 50 mins from the time we ordered food and when we received it and $63 for 2 people that ordered 2 entrees, 1 glass of wine and 2 sodas... I don't know if the quality of the food was less because we went on a Tuesday or what exactly was going on, but the overall experience of food was very much less than satisfying. First my husband started with "Sopa'a Portuguesa' which had great ingredients in the soup, but had no salt and lacked any flavor including the broth. Then he had the "Pasta Primavera" which was just that while I had the "Paelha Valenciana" which was a poor attempt to mimic a paella. The paella was served in a bowl normally used for stews or soups and was swimming in water that failed to evaporate during cooking. They appeared to take the seafood and mesh them into the cooking pot with the rice to make it look like a paella. It was not. We ordered a "Pudim de Flan" for dessert and that was overcooked and dry. They could have put a nice syrup, rather than the whipped cream, to help the resulting flan, but what was served was poor. Very disappointing overall. read more
