Top 7. Southwest Turkey Panini Bottom Steve's Seafood Creole
    annalise f.

My pasta was amazing, the seafood was good not fishy at all which was another plus. 4 stars though because there was a hair in the panini and we told them then they remade it for us and they gave us a free cannoli which was nice. But despite the hair honestly the food is really good I enjoy saggios.

I went to Saggios yesterday, it definitely wouldn't have been my first choice as someone with celiac disease. But we were at a volleyball tournament for my daughter, and that's where some of the team was heading, so I went along. My expectations were already low since it's a pizza place. I looked over the menu and decided to go with either a Greek salad or Caesar salad with chicken. When I got to the counter, I had several questions about the ingredients. The cashier looked like a deer in the headlights. She went to ask the manager, who was extremely rude and unhelpful. I asked if the dressing or chicken was gluten-free, and instead of checking or even trying to look at a label, she immediately said it wasn't and made no effort to verify even though the cashier kept asking her more questions, she blew her off. In the end, I ended up having Greek salad. I completely understand that not every restaurant can accommodate gluten-free needs, and that's okay. But having a manager be rude and dismissive, as if it's not worth their time or concern, is extremely disappointing.

You know it's been ages since I've found myself at Saggios let alone the OG location. I remember discovering it in my college years when me and my friends would meet up here countless weeknights and weekends. This place used to be one of my favorites. Then I graduated and unfortunately never quite found myself coming back even when they expanded to the Coronado mall. Anyone who's kept up with my last few reviews knows that I've been on a mission to find a great calzone in town after my favorite place sadly closed shop earlier this year. After reading some wild reviews of the Calzones at this joint from Yelp I found myself curious and eager to try on in hopes to find that familiar flavor I've longed for. Walking in I was amazed how much the place looked very much the same as I recalled from my college years. I was glad to see that. Most places after that long of a period usually make a lot of cosmetic changes so I was glad to see only minor changes. I was a little disappointed I ordered ahead on the phone 25 minutes prior to my arrival and still had to wait another 20. At least the box felt hot so I had high hopes. I got home and dug into that bad boy. I did a custom pepperoni and extra cheese. I'm pretty basic lol. I'm not gonna lie the presentation was strange but I went ahead and took that first bite and I was a delightful surprised. I really enjoyed the seasoning. It sent my taste buds into overdrive. I wish the crust was a little crispier but overall between the seasoning and the cheeses, the pepperonis, and of course the sauce you know what it was actually really tasty. You can tell they used high quality ingredients and it was prepared fresh which I really appreciated. I basically forgot about the wait and forgave them because the food spoke for itself. It was well worth the wait! Overall the vibe of the place is very much the same from what I'd remembered from 10 years ago. I'm so glad I gave them a try again. I'm gonna keep trying other places calzones to figure out whose I like best but until I try more I won't know who's number 1 but I will say Saggios is definitely towards the top for sure! Thanks Saggios for restoring my faith! I'll gladly be back!

What can we say about this week's find? New for us, but not new. Voted New Mexico's most unusual restaurant by https://shebudgets.com/food-drink/unusual-restaurants-in-each-state/. We went there for the tchotchkes but stayed for the food. You have to be there to really appreciate both. Excellent food - make sure you see the pizza. You order at a counter, and they call out your name when it's ready. Did I mention we went there for the ambiance? The interior is a feast for the eyes. Conveniently located right off the Mother Road (aka Historic Route 66 or AKA Central Avenue), right across from the main arch entry into the University of New Mexico. You really gotta go there. Take our tour by clicking on the following YouTube video link and see why Saggios is now right up there with our most favorite places. Beware: parking is tough, so get there before they open, and you will likely get a spot in their parking lot. Most highly recommended. https://youtu.be/-lXFrdoGBMw?si=PoVL0nrznKqpZunJ

The server said they were going through a shift change when our order took over 30 minutes to arrive. But, that did not explain the long waits to be seated, to get out waters, to have our orders taken and to pay the bill. The nachos were great. Loaded with tons of meat, cheese and veggies. They were just the right amount and just the right level of spice. The salad was a salad. The tuna melt tasted like straight pickle juice. We are assuming this wasn't the normal recipe and that something must have gone wrong in the kitchen because most people couldn't eat this. We sure couldn't.

I witnessed behind the bar were deeply concerning from both a customer experience and an operational standpoint. During my visit, the bartender on duty, short, overweight, frumpy, sweaty and greasy looking bartender had demonstrated behavior that was inappropriate and unprofessional. This bartender spent a significant amount of time openly bad mouthing other employees within clear earshot of patrons. Rather than maintaining a professional front, the discussion devolved into petty workplace drama. Even more troubling was that the manager on duty, with a attitude of a hooters, twin peaks server, actively joined in on these conversations and contributing to the gossip rather than redirecting the staff or focusing on guests. I frequent the casino very regularly and on the weekends I see this bartender serve visibly intoxicated customers without hesitation, raising immediate red flags regarding liability and guest safety. I see this Bartender has no concept of basic sanitary practices because these practices are regularly neglected throughout my visits. Weekends are the worse because not only do you have to hear employee drama from the bartender and manager. You have to put up with this bartender and another bartender constantly making gay remarks and passess on one another its pretty unprofessional, they grab eachothers butts then handle patrons drinks its pretty disqusting while the manager joins in on it. A bar's reputation relies heavily on basic cleanliness, safety, hospitable and professional environment. Having staff air internal grievances and acting like children in front of paying customers especially with management enabling it creates an uncomfortable dynamic and reflects poorly on a business. Who ever is in charge in the hiring process should be more selective. I wanted to bring this directly to attention so leadership has the opportunity to address issues before they lead to larger liabilities.

I'm so excited that there is now country music in the heart of downtown ABQ. The drinks we tried this evening Miss M, Miss Lisa and Old Fashion. All of them were delicious, cold and fresh. The tables and chairs seem cheep and corner cutting, but the bar, VIP room, and wood on the walls look great and took time. We just had dinner here tonight, introducing two family members to the restaurant.... and we had a VERY DISAPPOINTING EXPERIENCE. FOOD: I've appreciated their eggplant parmigiana in the past, a favorite of mine. Not tonight. It wasn't crispy and was served with very little sauce. It is served with a cacio de pepe linguine that was quite DRY. One family member had the lasagna. Presentation was nice but she found the dish lacking. She said it was OK but that she has had better... She's Italian and grew up with homemade lasagna. My partner and our second dinner guest had the spaghetti with meatballs dish. My partner has been a fan of this plate. He found the pasta a bit dry, short of sauce (again). Our dinner guest commented on how DELICIOUS the meatballs were, with which my partner agreed. For dessert we had the crème brûlée and the canelones. The crème brûlée tasted more like a pudding and a custard, and the flavor was very different from what were used to in the crème brûlée... Deficient. As for the cannelloni, the filling was tasty. The crusty wrap was very thick and dry. All in all quite a disappointing meal experience. AMBIENCE: A small comfortable neighborhood restaurant with charm. SERVICE: A big robust personality had our waitress. A bit on the loud side, a bit much on the robustness which felt a bit over bearing at the tableside. She herself was not unpleasant, but her presentation was a bit of nails on the chalkboard. To say the least, it was a disappointing experience tonight and as much as we have enjoyed this place in the past I'm not sure that we would return again. Especially disappointing because we live less than 2 miles away and it really has felt like our neighborhood place.
