I went to Saggios yesterday, it definitely wouldn't have been my first choice as someone with celiac disease. But we were at a volleyball tournament for my daughter, and that's where some of the team was heading, so I went along. My expectations were already low since it's a pizza place. I looked over the menu and decided to go with either a Greek salad or Caesar salad with chicken. When I got to the counter, I had several questions about the ingredients. The cashier looked like a deer in the headlights. She went to ask the manager, who was extremely rude and unhelpful. I asked if the dressing or chicken was gluten-free, and instead of checking or even trying to look at a label, she immediately said it wasn't and made no effort to verify even though the cashier kept asking her more questions, she blew her off. In the end, I ended up having Greek salad. I completely understand that not every restaurant can accommodate gluten-free needs, and that's okay. But having a manager be rude and dismissive, as if it's not worth their time or concern, is extremely disappointing.

What can we say about this week's find? New for us, but not new. Voted New Mexico's most unusual restaurant by https://shebudgets.com/food-drink/unusual-restaurants-in-each-state/. We went there for the tchotchkes but stayed for the food. You have to be there to really appreciate both. Excellent food - make sure you see the pizza. You order at a counter, and they call out your name when it's ready. Did I mention we went there for the ambiance? The interior is a feast for the eyes. Conveniently located right off the Mother Road (aka Historic Route 66 or AKA Central Avenue), right across from the main arch entry into the University of New Mexico. You really gotta go there. Take our tour by clicking on the following YouTube video link and see why Saggios is now right up there with our most favorite places. Beware: parking is tough, so get there before they open, and you will likely get a spot in their parking lot. Most highly recommended. https://youtu.be/-lXFrdoGBMw?si=PoVL0nrznKqpZunJ

You know it's been ages since I've found myself at Saggios let alone the OG location. I remember discovering it in my college years when me and my friends would meet up here countless weeknights and weekends. This place used to be one of my favorites. Then I graduated and unfortunately never quite found myself coming back even when they expanded to the Coronado mall. Anyone who's kept up with my last few reviews knows that I've been on a mission to find a great calzone in town after my favorite place sadly closed shop earlier this year. After reading some wild reviews of the Calzones at this joint from Yelp I found myself curious and eager to try on in hopes to find that familiar flavor I've longed for. Walking in I was amazed how much the place looked very much the same as I recalled from my college years. I was glad to see that. Most places after that long of a period usually make a lot of cosmetic changes so I was glad to see only minor changes. I was a little disappointed I ordered ahead on the phone 25 minutes prior to my arrival and still had to wait another 20. At least the box felt hot so I had high hopes. I got home and dug into that bad boy. I did a custom pepperoni and extra cheese. I'm pretty basic lol. I'm not gonna lie the presentation was strange but I went ahead and took that first bite and I was a delightful surprised. I really enjoyed the seasoning. It sent my taste buds into overdrive. I wish the crust was a little crispier but overall between the seasoning and the cheeses, the pepperonis, and of course the sauce you know what it was actually really tasty. You can tell they used high quality ingredients and it was prepared fresh which I really appreciated. I basically forgot about the wait and forgave them because the food spoke for itself. It was well worth the wait! Overall the vibe of the place is very much the same from what I'd remembered from 10 years ago. I'm so glad I gave them a try again. I'm gonna keep trying other places calzones to figure out whose I like best but until I try more I won't know who's number 1 but I will say Saggios is definitely towards the top for sure! Thanks Saggios for restoring my faith! I'll gladly be back!

They have a great special a slice and a bottle. It's pretty good deal especially if you know how big the slices are. During the week they are not as busy and a nice place for a relaxing dinner.

This is our go-to place to eat whenever we are down town. The food is always consistent and the portion sizes are on point. Reasonably priced and the service is quick. The pizza is good but I always go for the pastas! The baked ziti is absolutely delicious! They have daily specials that my husband always likes to try out. If you are looking for a casual dining experience then look no further this is definitely the place to go! Just don't forget to order at the front before you sit down. There is no table service.

The aesthetics of this place is still present and conveys a relaxing environment. However taste and quality of food has gone down. I was disappointed in my trip today and spent a good 80 bucks that doent match with quality of food I received. They call your name when food is ready and no table service. Save your buck and go somewhere else. However if anything go in for a snack like a cannoli and study of relax.

I've been going to Saggio's since I was in college, way back since 1999. Sandwiches, pastas, mussels, pizza, calzones... All here is delicious. Local beer is available on tap. You'll always find something new looking at the decor. Great place for casual dining with family or friends.

This was the pile of red onions in my salad. If I ever order this again, I will ask them to leave the red onions off.

Food: Very good. Service: Not very good Ambiance: kitschy Albuquerque history My wife and I have always liked Saggios and have recommended them, but yesterday (Saturday, June 15, 2024, "order-in at 3:18 PM) was a very bad experience with the service. It was like the good, the bad and the ugly. We have the pictures to prove it! Before I get into the bad and the ugly, let me start with the good. The store was virtually empty on a Saturday afternoon, so the only wait time was for the two young women to decide they wanted to step up to the register and talk to us. That took at least five minutes while they puttered around ignoring us. It seemed to us that they hate their jobs and didn't really want to be there. OK, what was good? You were out of classic cannolis and the young blonde woman offered to make some for us which she did. And they were perfect, as always. Now the bad. My spouse ordered a #1 (a slice, a salad and a drink) but changed her mind, as soon as she saw the "Fried Ravioli" on the menu! What was bad was the clerk's reaction to her changing her mind - after all, she had typed in the order already and I was going to get the included drink as unsweetened iced tea. The Mrs. was going to have a side pasta salad and a beer. It seemed like undoing all that was a major chore. Oh well! After much angst, I ordered what I thought would be a reasonably healthy choice: The Caribbean Shrimp salad: Cajun shrimp, pineapple, red & yellow peppers, cabbage, romaine & iceberg lettuce, cilantro, red onions, and almonds tossed in Caribbean Vinaigrette topped with Mozzarella & drizzled in Cilantro Ranch." Not a bad choice for someone looking to limit carbs... Order in, we got her beer, then sat down to wait for "Sue" to be called. Her ravioli came up to the bar in less than 10 minutes -- probably closer to 5! And it was delicious (I was forced to help her eat a couple of them)! Before I changed my diet, I would no doubt have asked for a double order, they are THAT good! Eating the ravioli was when I realized that I didn't have anything to drink -- remember it would have been part of a #1 which wifey didn't get. So, I went back up, waited while the one woman still there finished placing pepperoni slices (ever so carefully) on a half a pizza destined for slices I guess. She finally came over and I said I needed a drink. In a somewhat surly tone (I thought), she reminded me that, only with the #1 was I to earn a drink (my words)! I knew that and said, "I know, may I please purchase a large, unsweetened iced tea?" And, I added that I'd like to pay for two cannolis that the other person was going to make for us. OK, done. And now the ugly: If you'll recall, the order was timestamped "3:18:17 PM" and, around 3:40, I went up to the counter to inquire about my salad. The clerk went back to the kitchen, returned and assured me that it was being constructed. OK, I sat back down. The raviolis were gone now. So we waited. At 3:48 PM (by now I was clock-watching) I went back up to the delivery side of the bar and asked again about my order. Jokingly, I asked if they had gone to Louisiana, jumped on a shrimp trawler, netted a few shrimp and flew back to ABQ with their catch! She looked at me as if I was from Mars...anyway, she checked again and promised it was coming soon. A few minutes later (at 3:55 PM) she actually brought my salad to our table! Thank you! 37 minutes to construct an admittedly large, tasty salad, that was full of fresh ingredients, albeit a little red onion forward, although they are easy to pick out. The photos I'll attach to this review give you an idea how large the serving is. I immediately asked for a takeout container, which arrived instantly, as if predicted! What was surprising was how little shrimp there were. With all that time, I would have thought they would be giant prawns. Instead, the tiny condiment cup of objects reminded me of the teeny, tiny shrimp that gave the species its name! They were certainly shrimpy! I ate the shrimp (all one tablespoon worth) with about a third of the salad. The rest of the greens served as Sunday breakfast this morning. For $14.95, I think Saggios needs to reevaluate the value of that dish. Lettuce is cheap.... So that's it: the good, the not so good, the bad, not terrible, (except for my wait), and the ugly - that tiny ounce of microscopic Cajun shrimp. We expect better from Saggio's. It's been a favorite since I moved here from NJ 8 years ago. My Father's Day weekend date with Mrs. J. could certainly have been better.

They also make their own house infusions like beet vodka, coffee liqueur, and cucumber gin, which I thought was interesting. The service was friendly although it was busy so I wouldn't say they were fully attentive. Differential Brewing does seem like a chill spot to grab a drink and hang out with friends. My only issue was that the bathrooms were not clearly labeled and the heavy metal playlist was not my cup of tea. Lots of doors and roll-up windows allow them to combine or separate spaces. I'm not sure if it's a New Mexico thing, but this might be the first brewery we've been to that doesn't do flights. Too bad too because there were several we wanted to get. We ended up tasting four beers. The Bock was ok, and the Stout was pretty good. I had a pint each of the Blue Corn Lager and the Irish Red, while my wife had two pints of the Irish Red. Both were quite good. Had I had another, I would've ordered the Stout. The one knock on the place was the service. It was friendly enough. There just wasn't enough of it. Every time we needed something, it was around a 10-min wait in line. To order, to close out, etc. Not really because it was overly crowded. It just took a really long time for those in front of us to be helped by the one person tending bar at the time. Oh well. The beer was good and not overpriced. Even though the alcohol content wasn't too high, it hit the spot.

When the bartender finally emerged from the back, there was no greeting, no eye contact, and no offer of a menu--just a curt "What can I get you?" while walking away. My cousins and I enjoyed some drinks here when we first checked in and we also grabbed late dinner here on the last night of our stay. There is a tradeoff for convenience so don't expect too much of the food or service here. I can see why the waitress would be flustered while it's busy but she was just as flustered when we were the only guest around so I think it's just her personality. For dinner we shared the Spinach Dip ($9) which comes with toasted flatbread and tortilla chips. I really like that it comes with two different types of carbs to dip but then the spinach dip itself was tiny and you will easily have extra flatbread and chips in ratio to the dip. For our entrees my cousins had the Braised Beef Torta ($11) and one of the Taco entrees ($11-12). It seemed "okay". I had the Breaking Bad Salad ($14) which is probably the world's most unhealthy salad. It had spring mix and romaine, smoked bacon, pulled pork, cheddar jack cheese, chopped egg, tomato, cucumber and crispy fried onions. It was slightly overdressed and heavy for a salad, but an edible option. I'm glad the hotel had a restaurant and it was convenient. My low expectations were met and I survived the evening. 4 stars since we were in Albuquerque but it would be 3 stars in any other decent food scene.
