First off let me start out by saying that they are some restaurants that become part of your life, where you spend birthdays, have celebrations, and bring friends to... this restaurant was one of them for me. Though it has become expensive and I don't come here as often, the food level is good to great consistently
I have gone back 3 times since my last review and incident with the owner. The first time back was during lunch and It was packed. I was treated with upmost respect by the owners son, whom I've known for give or take, for 20 years from his restaurant "Taste of India" on Roosevelt. He was personable, courteous, pulled out each of our chairs, and even asked about my family! It felt like I was eating at a friend's house rather than a restaurant with the way he treated me.
Also the waiter was kind and attentive. We ordered Saag Paneer, Vegetable Pakoras, 2 Chais and of course their Garlic Naan. The food was hot, fresh, flavorful, and delicious. My friend was amazed at their service and complimented them on how great everything was. He was genuinely grateful for our patronage and said he hoped to see us back soon. Afterward in the car she said "this is how a restaurant should treat all of their customers. Wow!". We were basically in awe as we left. It was Absolutely a wonderful experience!
However I went in the 2nd time, 2 or 3 months ago I think... service was awful. It was around 4 in the afternoon and it was pretty empty. We got seated and we waited, and waited, and waited. 20 minutes passed!! With no water, or service to take our order. The young waitresses, about 3 or 4 were all talking among themselves and goofing around and no one was paying attention to the customers in my section.
Finally got water and drinks by Chai guy and I asked if we could order and he said your waitress will be right over, which she wasn't. It felt like we being ignored because people who came after us were being taken care of by another waitress. Another 10 minutes passed... I was actually taken aback by their lack of service and behavior. And trying to get someone's attention in a restaurant and being ignored is rather humiliating. My friend and I almost left but stayed because neither of us had eaten that day and it was rush hour anyways!
Our waitress made us feel like we were a nuisance and her superior attitude was off-putting that we couldn't enjoy our meal though the food was good as always. The only person who was helpful, respectful, and competent at their job was the waiter who had serviced us in the past and apologized for slow service. Then our waitress also extended her apologies while we were leaving. I appreciated and accepted that but my friend was like whatever.
3rd time I opted for take out and food was good as always.
I don't know why the owner was unkind and got upset with or at me a year ago. I was more so hurt and upset by his behavior since I'm a long time customer who came in frequently. I don't know what I did for him to disrespect me in front of other patrons and staff like that. I would've gladly paid for the chais as I always have... he could've just asked instead of humiliating me and acting so rudely and mean. Perhaps he was having a bad day and I shouldn't take it so personal. He was always kind to me before.
I actually remember about 5 or 6 years ago. I brought a friend who had never seen a tandoor oven before and so he actually took my friend and I to the kitchen and showed us how they make their awesome naan's and tandoori dishes! Who does that?! I still think that was really cool of him! The restaurant staff also have frequent turnovers. I hardly see the same people twice aside from the owners.
**After my last review I was contacted by the waitress/hostess who remembered me and the incident. She confirmed that they give free Chai to anyone who's waiting for take-out regardless of their order amount. And apologized for the experience and doesn't know why her boss got angry and stopped her from giving us Chai. It was strange thing for him to do and doesn't know what happened and I replied I didn't either. read more
