Use your Safeway card from home, or ask for one. You'll pick up the sale prices which will save you $$. Really nice bakery goods here. We looked for sales and did well. I like this store best for their bakery. Lots of choices and variety. Cakes, cookies, donuts, etc. Do pay attention to the prices - they will shock you at times, and we made some different choices based on the available choices / prices. Since we arrived on Jan 1 and Costco was closed, we ended up shopping here and never made it back to Costco. So I can't compare the two. Some of their produce was good and priced well enough. We also bought some produce at the farmer's market and some of it is expensive there too - so if you have time (and you probably won't), write down the costs and shop where it's best - I never figured it out for everything. I think the lemons, limes, avocados, pineapples were less expensive at the farmer's market in South Kihei. And fresher and more ripe and ready to use. But some things like Maui onions and green onions were less expensive at Safeway. Not sure about the price of the papayas but they looked wonderful at the farmer's market and that's where we got them - don't want hard unripened fruit! But pay attention to what's out of season and don't buy it- we got some out of season mangos that never ripened and rotted - that's an expensive mistake. We got some Kona coffee - there's a difference in taste / cost between the 10% and 100% - we love the 100% - it was especially nice treat to have in the morning while whale-watching, along with the donuts. :) Expensive but a nice treat if you're into coffee. It's so expensive that you might think it's cheaper just to eat out, but it isn't. We bought enough for 3 breakfasts during our 2-week stay and that was just right - eggs, sausage, Hawaiian bread, juice and fruit. Yummy out on the lanai and it was nice to eat in sometimes. Plus having some snacks is quite nice - we made up some guacamole and bean dip and that was delicious with some tortilla chips too. I just want to give a great big thumbs up to "Olga" who works in the pharmacy section of Safeway. On a very busy Friday, she took the time and effort to help me pay for a medication. When she told me the prescribed pain medication was $171 plus, I was shocked. My insurance wouldn't cover it. Even though she was extremely busy, she took the time to look for a coupon on her computer. She found one and applied it to the cost which made the new total $14.10. Wow! What a difference! yes, it's not the cheapest place around, but I can afford it. And they have a wonderful selection of Poke. And, considering what you would pay for the same poke at a restaurant, it is a very good bang for the buck. definitely try the ahi/avocado poke, the spice ahi poke and the tako kim chee poke. All the reviews on TripAdvisor talked about making a run to Safeway to stock up on food and snacks as a way to save money while in Maui. Not! Basically, the revenue management geniuses at Safeway Inc. are aware of the fact that most shopping at this location are visitors from out of town and so everything is marked up insanely. Stocking: Constant problems keeping the shelves filled points to incompetence in the purchasing department. On a recent Wednesday they had no chicken. At all. The entire huge display case was empty. That happens all the time here with random products. Deli: Stocked with lifer employees who can't get a job anywhere else and have given up trying in life. This deli seriously reminds me of the indifferent and disinterested "service" you used to get in the USSR back in the day. Yesterday afternoon, went in at an off hour and there were 6 employees standing around chatting and packaging items. There is no way they did not see me as they were looking right at me. Waited several minutes before being finally being acknowledged, then someone walked slowly over and took my order for a pound of meat (overpriced at $12/lb). She puts 1.6 lbs on the scale. "Little over, is that OK?" Really? 1.6 lbs is "a little over?" Price: Extremely overpriced. If you buy anything at regular price here you are paying 2 to 3 times its actual value. read more

Not sure if that last person's review is from the same store. The Safeway in Kihei is frequented mostly by tourists but really by everyone in town. The true locals seem to frequent Star Market or Foodland (not that I'm recommending them for everything as they're pricy too). The customer service is always nice. That's the good. The bad: Frequently picked clean -- especially of anything on sale. EXPENSIVE beyond belief. Go to Costco for anything you can. Go to farmer's markets for fresh fruits and veggies. Go to Foodland when you can't find a farmer's market Go to Safeway for everything else as a last resort. Expect to pay $300-$400+ for a cart of groceries. read more

The Kihei Safeway is a nice Safeway. It had a good location, and it seems open and bright when you walk in. It, however, doesn't have quite the selection compared to the Wailuku one especially: the yogurt section. They have self pay stations such I love to use. I gotta say, the salmon poke (only one kind, sadly) was tops. Just exactly what you want. The tako poke was also good. A bit chewy but not too chewy, with a good amount of flavor. Plus both are the cheapest poke prices for those items at any of the local grocery stores. I generally shop at Safeway and so, while we were in town we stopped here for water, snacks, and other stuff a few times. It's laid out well. They have friendly staff. They have local items. It has everything you need. My favorite thing was that they had local flowers. So we bought some to enjoy in our condo while in town. It's located in a super branded shopping center (Subway, Outback, etc), so it doesn't give a local feel. We went to Foodland and Times Market and found some great things at that those stores as well. *While they have plenty of poke, it's not that great. This was the best place to purchase groceries when in Kihei. Sure, the prices are still higher that the Mainland, but after a couple days in Maui, you get over the sticker shock and start comparing the stores on the island with each other. Since we were only there for a week, we only bought a few days worth of food. Our resort had a membership, so we just punched in their phone number, which saved us a LOT of $$$. Meat is expensive, but we had to have it. The produce was significantly less than Farmer's Marketing prices, so we loaded up there. Seems strange to be yelping a grocery store but grocery stores get the lions share of my Food budget so why not? The good.... this store is bigger and cleaner than the Kahului store. Unlike Kahului, this store also has a meat/seafood counter and a pharmacy. They have dried fruits and nuts, seeds and snacks by the pound in the produce section as well. The selection and variety of goods offered is far superior to the Kahului Safeway and Foodland stores. The bad..... this store is seriously under staffed resulting in long waits at checkout, shortages of sale items in the aisles and some general disarray. Need a cart?, bring one in from the parking lot . Like fresh groceries?, be sure to check the dates on perishable goods. Buying ice cream?, be sure to bring a cooler bag to keep it in until check out. Prices are higher than the mainland,just like everything everything else here. Avoid this store in the late afternoons and holidays if you have high blood pressure and you'll do just fine. read more

Everything we needed was here. It was clean, easy to navigate and stocked (mostly) The deli area was completely empty for 2 days while they waited for a restocking. That kind of sucked because we wanted to make picnic sandwiches and they had NO meat. NONE. I ate their sushi a couple of times which was good and we had no problems with the produce whatsoever. My dad who is Canadian (I am American) had a really difficult time understanding the accents of some of the workers (which is common where I am from.. they just can't understand accents it's weird) which frustrated him, and eventually the workers. Luckily I could easily translate otherwise I think he would have gotten pretty mad and same with the workers. It was a bit more out of town than Foodmart but it was worth it in my opinion for the type of stuff we were buying. read more

When on Maui we do most of our food shopping here. We have tried a few other places, but this is our favorite place. We also buy produce at the farmer's markets. I shop at Safeway at home so I know the brands they carry. Prices are higher than home, but it's Hawaii and we don't mind. We stay in a condo and cook many of our own meals. I find a good product mix at this Safeway and a few items I have never seen before. The store is clean and well stocked. read more

Pretty much whatever you need this place will have it. Meats. Produce. Deli. Beer. Wine. Household items for your week vacation. Add to this that you can also get snorkel sets, chairs, and a wide array of beach necessities, it's a one stop shop Since you are in Hawaii everything is more expensive. This comes clearer at the register for sure. But when in Hawaii... And if you are lucky enough to have a kitchen where you are at, fixing your own meals is a massive savings. We opted to have two evening out and three evenings in; three out of five lunches; every breakfast; and snacks for the flight home and daily snacks. This not only saved us untold dollars but also vast calories and we felt better. We spent that money on experiences so don't worry Maui, we still left our vacay dollars on your island. Great grocery whether you are stocking up or just stopping in for snacks. read more

I live in KIhei so really no competition the other stores are even more expensive and less to choose from, however they are always understaffed, the lines are long and the baggers can hardly speak or understand English and they do not know how to bag. The produce is rotten or bruised and way over priced. The meat department is great and the only department that seems to know what they are doing. Dairy is usually not stocked and the product is outdated. You always have to check the dates or you get bad or spoiled products. Grocery shopping at this store or any Safeway on this island is a very negative experience. Good luck trying to get help except in the meat department. It does the job. Big parking lot. Store isn't too crowded. Food is ok. If you get products like asparagus it will go bad in a day. Price is high. You need to get safeway card. Beer choices ok at best but a lot of wine. Cashier lines are long. It's just something one needs to have/do....it's never a fun experience unless it's a quick cashier line. They have cooked chicken which saves time and sushi. Also poke in the back. That's all I got.....I would go to the other ones but this one is an easier drive and others seems to have questionable characters hanging in the parking lot so there's less issues at Safeway but there's always a few screwballs at the Starbucks.....but then again if you buy a $5 coffee you maybe a screwball. read more

This is specifically for the PHARMACY. I used to get prescriptions filled here regularly. For the most part they get filled on time. However, this most recent event made clear I won't be back. I just changed insurance and after the Pharmacy Tech verified the meds were available and I'd be able to get my scripts in about 20 minutes, she ended up telling me the insurance "wasn't working". There were 2 people behind me, and I know for a fact she just couldn't be bothered to help me. I didn't ask her to DO HER JOB, because I needed to catch the bus to try another pharmacy. I have Medicaid and it's so embarrassing to be made to feel less than worthy for medication because I don't have to pay for it. I went to Walgreens. It took a little while to verify my insurance, but I got my meds. Another time I was told my meds would be ready in 30 minutes, but when I came back to pick them up I was told they'd have to order them. I wasn't even given a few to hold me over until the rest of the script could be filled. And another time, I took advantage of the automatic refill phone system and was told the script could be picked up that day. When I went to pick the prescription I was told, again, that they had to order it. It took a week, and I got sick from not having the meds. The Pharmacy should have called me and told me about the delay. I should have switched pharmacies sooner, but Safeway is convenient as there are few pharmacies in South Maui. The Safeway Pharmacy in Kihei is nice. They have a private enclosed waiting area with chairs. The Pharmacist is very nice. It's the people at the counter who make the whole experience negative. read more

Where to start... My yelp fans- I am getting married in three weeks and wanted to order flowers through Safeway after glowing reviews. I started my process with the Kihei Safeway on April 30th when I emailed a Brittney with pictures. She never responded back to it so I called the store July 10th. They asked me to submit via online and go from there. It's now July 24th and the only person who has contacted me was Bobby to let me know he has forward to the manager. My wedding is in THREE weeks. I have called two times, emailed four times and still have yet to get a price or even a confirmation they could the order. It is VERY disappointing to know how bad of customer support and care I have gotten in this process. I am by NO MEANS a bridezilla but this whole situation is horrific. I am now forced to go with Costco and making my own the day of. THANK YOU Safeway for being the WORST vendor I have had to deal with in this wedding process. Having flown to Maui and paid $25 for each checked bag we tried our best to pack light. That included some old plastic Safeway bags that have been used repeatedly on our little trip. When we pulled them out our checker, Laurette, rolled her eyes and said to the person in front of us "Look what they brought" then rolled her eyes again. Hello? We were standing right there. Then she and the customer said the bags were not welcome. Again, hello? We pride ourselves on reusability. Our Trader Joe's reusable cloth bags were too heavy to bring so we opted for the plastic ones which we've used repeatedly in our local Safeway. I felt Laurette was quite rude and could use a refresher course on both conservation and customer service. Oh one other note as we were bagging our groceries she reversed the conveyer belt and got a big laugh out of that. I imagine if she stopped gossiping with her friends in line her checkout times would be much more efficient. One person really can turn a trip to Safeway into a distasteful experience. read more

Crowded grocery stores are on one of my top lists of things to avoid. That being said, in Kihei, this can be a difficult thing to maneuver. Safeway has everything you need from cosmetics to office supplies to groceries while most of the other local grocery stores don't, making for a bit of a conundrum when you're balancing not only your grocery list but also your budget. I like that this particular location has decent produce and a varied selection of items but getting caught here close to dinner time, can be a bit of a hassle. I would definitely choose another option if there was something more affordable close by. Although it gets the job done when I'm in a pinch, I would make the drive to Costco in Kahului any day, if I had the option. Finally, this Safeway doesn't feature Safeway gas which is a huge con in regards to using their rewards program. read more

Safeway was a total lifeline for me in Kihei. We forgot more toiletries than we brought, so having a Safeway within a few miles was such a life-saver. Yes, the items were higher priced than my Denver Safeway; the other Yelper are correct --- but what's not more expensive in Maui or Hawaii for that matter. I guess I had a "Vacation Attitude" as I didn't have sticker shock, in fact, I loved the wine and liquor prices and selection. Believe me, when staying at the Four Seasons where the cheapest glass of wine is $20 and a Mai Tai is $25, a bottle of $17.99 Cabernet looks really good. Safeway itself: 3 stars Pharmacy: 0 starts--so the average comes down to 2. It's pricey because it's Maui, and most things in Maui cost more. As for the pharmacy, my husband needed to fill a prescription (clinic called it in), and when we got there 40 min after it was called in they had no record of it. The lady (Marilyn) was super slow and did the two finger poke on the keyboard, proceeded to ask for the name and DOB which we gave. Nothing she says, and doesn't offer any more help so we call the clinic to re-do. We come back 10 minutes later and she still looks clueless, but we wait just in case another 20 minutes. We come back and she proceeds to ask us for ID so she can input the same informations he asked for earlier (name and DOB). She stares long and hard at the ID and her keyboard as if pondering life's mysteries, like how she should do her job. We tell her we had been waiting over an hour now, and we have no idea how long it will be. She tells us to come back in 20 minutes so we head out and come back, only to have her tell us that she has no idea how long it would be as the pharmacist is way too busy (he was busy hacking away onto all the meds--he was either sick or had a chronic lung infection--either way it did not sound good). We express to her how important it was that we needed these meds, and she simply tells us to talk to the pharmacist himself as she clearly wants nothing to do with this. We try to get the attention of the pharmacist who complains about how he had to call the clinic to clarify the prescription (which we doubt since it was a simple refill of a pre-packaged drug). 5 minutes later and we are waiting back in line, $400 poorer, and lo-and-behold my husband's name and address is wrong on the label. Shoot us now. Or better yet avoid this place if your life depends on it (duh, that's why you are here at the pharmacy!). read more

Most of the checkers are too busy chatting with each other or complaining to actually check an order correctly. ALWAYS check your receipt at this store as I have been overcharged as much a 22 dollars because their "sale" signs were old or something didn't scan correctly. They don't tell visitors that they will be grossly over charged if they don't opt to sign up for a club card...what a bunch of crooks. STAY AWAY from the sushi...rice is hard and fish tastes old. The California roll had avocado that was super under ripe- gross. The manager- Brad is too busy checking out his reflection to actually manage his employees.
