One of the Safeway check out employees needs customer service training. He could not say hello, thank you or goodbye. He tossed the produce after he scanned it to the end of his bagging area. I have been coming to this store for years and for the last year, this location has been in a downward trajectory. Today was a new low. It's pretty pathetic that the only way I can get anything freshly cooked at the deli, like fried chicken, tenders, chicken sandwich, etc, is to come in at 9 am. If I come in at 11 or 12 the hot food has been sitting for hours. Just had a chicken sandwich at 10:30 and it was like eating leather. And you're the devil if you ask to have something cooked fresh! Customer service is VERY IMPORTANT. Deli guy told me he HAD TO cut all the meat before he will be able to serve me. I was the only patron there. It only takes one minute to change gloves, pack 2 wings and potatoes in a box. Then go back to slicing on the slicer. I immediately referenced to the manager on duty for 12-28-24 at 10:45. I waited at least ten minutes before getting her. Did she oblige to assist? NO. Instead the manger said the other person has left and he's alone. I also told her it only takes a minute to transition. I decided to give the store another try and I'm glad I did...this shopping experience was much better. It was not busy and the store was very clean and well stocked. Customers seemed relaxed while shopping and staff were also chill and nice, especially the cash registrar associate. I found a great sandwich at the deli. If you are looking for economy packs of snacks like I always am this store has a pretty good selection; in the cookies and chips aisle I found 16-packs of Ritz crackers with cheese or peanut butter (there were many combinations of chips and cookie packs to choose from--I found fruit snacks in a different aisle though). I'm relieved I had a calm shopping trip today! read more

Tiffany who worked at customer service desk on 6/22 between 11:30-12pm treated us very unprofessionally and rude. I had an item which didn't come off after justforU discount as their system at checkout is difficult to understand until I get the receipt in my hand (then I had to go to customer service desk). I showed (zoomed in) her the clipped coupons, but when I refused to hand over my phone to her, she started treating us very rudely and talked to us like we were complete idiots. I told her honestly I do not like strangers touching my phone as I have a lot of sensitive information + attached wallet. She asked if I typed in my safeway number correctly and I told her everything else with digital coupons came off fine. I even asked her don't talk to me that way. 5/23/21 I came here for some nail treatment called Kerasal Multi-Purpose Nail Solution with the brush, but forgot all about it after using the restroom and seeing Gatorade bottles. Now I need to take my ass back inside the store to at least see if this store has it and for how much. Turns out they have the same merchandise as CVS, but for a better price. Had to get it try and see if they had it. The store didn't look trashy from what I saw...okay maybe the men's bathroom and possibly the women's bathroom too, but aside from that. It was fine. No employees said hello or anything, but neither did other customers. No big deal this time around. Many things changed and this store looks like it went through an upgrade a bit. The other mall here changed too. I use to go down stair to get my hair cut as a kid. Downstairs is just a closed bank on both sides. More stores are here in this shopping Center too. I'm so confused by how poorly this particular Safeway is run. The location is great, the surrounding stores are of decent quality and serve a demographic that you'd think a chain like Safeway would want to cater to (given the competition posed by Harris Teeter and Wegman's) ... BUT ... The checkout lines are ridiculous. Never more than two cashiers, sometimes only one, no matter how many people are waiting. I've had to wait nearly half an hour several times. Stock is inconsistent, and often blatantly missing or under stocked. Selection is limited - even compared to other nearby Safeway locations. What's up with that? Prices seem to be higher here, again, even when compared to nearby Safeway locations. How does that work? I stop by this store when I'm at Sumner Place strictly out of convenience (hate having to drive to multiple locations) but if I really don't need something I don't go in even to browse. read more

Rather fond of this store :) I live nearby and am quite thankful for it. I give 5 stars because it is always clean, friendly, and I can find what I need in it. The folks who work there are always super kind and helpful. One thing I was hoping though would be that one day they stock more healthy products with less preservatives, sugar, etc No complaints though... As the Safeway closest to my home, I really wish they could get their act together. Gripes: a) When they re-paved and re-lined the parking lot, they made the spaces ridiculously narrow. This is Bethesda, where SUVs and minivans outnumber people. I drive a compact car, but even I find it hard to get in and out of these spaces. b) There are never, ever enough open registers. I don't know who is making the staffing decisions, but those of us waiting in line are always in agreement, that it's always a problem. For years. c) While this Safeway is relatively updated, the lighting is dreadful and depressing. d) I've never walked past the seafood department when it hasn't reeked of bad fish. e) Several times over four or five years, the freezers have been broken. Doesn't give me much faith in maintenance/food safety. f) They haven't a clue about when to stock specialty foods (like challah on Fridays, or matzoh during Passover -- not Chanukah). g) Super small selection of organic produce. This Safeway is pretty nice. It is super clean. The produce is fresh. It has a bank and a dry cleaner inside it too. I've been coming to this Safeway while dog/house sitting and it is organized so well that I have no problem finding exactly what I want. Their selection of frozen entrees is huge. It is located in a posh shopping center not too far from Glen Echo so every time I've come in here there has been smokin' hot firemen from the Glen Echo Volunteer Fire Station shopping here. Kind of a fun throwback to supermarkets of the early 80s when people cared less about fresh fruit and vegetables.

This store is well laid out and has a lot of health alternative options such as gluten free and natural brands. There is also a convenient amazon hub locker and pharmacy. The staff is friendly and kind! I don't know why there are a few negative reviews here-the people who left them quite frankly sound as if they have far too much time on their hands. Which is why I took the time to leave a review myself-I don't normally take the time but it is a great store and I have no tolerance for trolls;) read more

Consistently crappy customer service every visit. I am usually here after 6pm, so perhaps the day staff are more pleasant...? I typically try to wait it out if I need any groceries due to how anti-customer-service they are here. (granted, there are a few bright spots on a good day here and there) They also appeal to the rich folks in the area, so they up-charge nearly all of their stuff. Prices are high and the cashier who bagged my groceries was about as sharp as a marble. I had to correct this individual on several occasions. Putting meat with cleaning supplies, heavier items with the eggs and just threw boxed items in bags. Not to mention when I asked him how he was doing a second time after him ignoring me the first time. He replied " he was tired and ready to go home." The selection and all that is fine. My big complaint is that there are NEVER enough people working the checkout lines on weekends. They have a captive audience with the parents of all the kids who are in karate, ballet, etc nearby, and they seem to be using that fact to under-serve their customers. The people who do work the checkout lines are very nice, but they seem overworked and under supported. It would be great if management would pay a little more to give them--and their child-juggling customers--some needed help. read more

I completely agree with Ashley J. - one star is too generous. I've been "going" to this Safeway for 20+ years. I "go" in when I need to pick up prescriptions (the pharmacy is excellent)....then I "go" out and drive to the Giant on Westbard. If for some reason I am forced to shop there, I examine all produce very carefully for mold, I check expiration dates on everything else (just today I found all the containers of potato salad expired 3 days ago), and I never, EVER buy meat. Message for Safeway management: You really should be ashamed to own a store like this. read more

This safeway is awful. The only reason I've been going here is that it's the closest pharmacy for me but I've reached my last straw. Yesterday, June 14, I bought 2 packages of bacon. I went to open one for dinner and discovered it expires April 4. 2.5 months on the counter expired and never removed. The second package expired last week. So, I head back to Safeway today to return the bacon and complain. The cashier didn't even apologize. He stated, "I'd say I was surprised but this happens all of the time. It's a shame for the store." I then asked to speak to a manager. No apology again. She seemed completely unphased. I'd be mortified if this happened in my store. Every time I'm there the staff are over worked and complaining: Usually about some sort of race issue. It seems like such a hostile place. For such a great location, I hope they close and get replaced with a grocery store with better management. Im officially taking my business elsewhere even if its a longer drive. I'm not sure what has happened to this Safeway--my guess is that the mall is now fully occupied and the Safeway has not caught up to the fact they are getting more traffic. I'm here twice a week. No matter the day, the store is always a mess: Shelves rummaged, things out of stock, etc. An exception is the fruit-veg area: I always seem to find what I need and it is in order. An earlier review mentioned eggs and milk as a problem and that has been my experience too. We buy a 1/2 gallon of milk once a week, but they are often out of stock on what we need. My main issue is the shelves. The stock is never pushed up and filled in so it's hard to find specific items. Case in point is the dry pasta. Looking for a specific box of fucilli is like exploring a dump bin at at TJ Maxx. I posted a few photos--this is typical in that it is everyday. This also applies to most of the popular canned and dry goods. I feel as though most of the staff are helpful and care--some are outstanding. The disconnect seems to be between the process Safeway uses to order and the overall responsibility to keep goods ship-shape on the shelves. I have called the 800 number for Safeway customer service and alerted them--nothing seems to have changed. read more

Good morning, The following is regarding the location at 4701 Sangamore Rd in Bethesda, MD. While I know that Safeway is overpriced (last night I paid 5 bucks for a 6 pack of Diet Dr. Pepper that is typically $2.99 at Target), I sometimes find myself at this location if I need a few basic things due to its proximity to my office. That stops today, you've lost me as a customer for life, and I encourage others to stop shopping at Safeway as well. There are simply too many choices to deal with the piss poor management and lack of value placed on customers that was on display at this location last night, 10/18/2017 at approximately 7:30 p.m. As stated above, I sometimes come to the location for the basics: last night was for bread, a 6 pack of soda, and something light for dinner at my desk (note that all of these things could easily be purchased at the CVS in the same shopping center). Everything was going as expected until I got up to the front of the store to get in line. There was a single register open, with no other employees to be found. I was 7th in line, and no less than 18 people lined up behind me before I lost count. To the gentleman's credit working the register, he kept calling for backup...but nobody showed up for over 15 minutes. At one point a woman entered the store and approached the customer service desk (also unmanned); as expected, she looked to the single employee visible for guidance...he told her "You can wait, but it's going to be a while." If you aren't going to use the customer service desk anyway, why not just turn it into a Starbucks? Anyway, while standing in line I passed the time by enjoying peoples' reactions as they walked up with their groceries and realized "Wait a second, this isn't the line for the new iPhone...this is just people buying some milk and cheese." One guy in particular stood out (we'll call him "d-bag"), as d-bag approached the line, he realized how many people were there...stood there and counted us...walked down to the other end of the registers to check for an open one, because, surely these 20+ people are standing in line because they want to and they just missed an open register down there. D-bag came back again a couple mins later....looked shocked still, and walked down to the other end again. At about this time the backup cashier FINALLY walked in the front door...I'm guessing she was out smoking or on her phone or something. Upon realizing how many people were waiting in line, she immediately proceeded to the register next to our cashier...and wouldn't you know it...D-bag scurried in right in front of her. A better store, with better trained employees, and better management would have addressed this immediately with a "Sir, I'm sorry, but there is a line of customers who have been waiting quite some time, so I'm going to have to serve them first." But this is Safeway, so we were forced to deal with it like cavemen, with loud exasperated sighs and "WOWWWWWWWWWWW" comments. Since at this point I was next in line, I jumped over behind D-bag...considered saying something, but really just needed to get back to work. My thoughts were interrupted by an older man who pushed by me and announced to our newly-arrived cashier "MAM. DO NOT SERVE THIS MAN. HE IS A FU%@ING DOUCHEBAG." I liked this guy. "He knew there were 20 people waiting in line, but he came over here and jumped in front of us all. YOU ARE A DOUCHEBAG SIR", our hero told the man. D-bag told the cashier "I don't know this guy he's just an a-hole." This is about when I started recording (access to my phone was easy because I had been playing on it as I waited in line for the better part of 20 minutes, as you remember). The video is basically just them yelling back and forth at each other before the older guy felt like he got his point across and walked away. If anybody in management actually cares (which I seriously doubt), I can email it to someone. Now, one could argue that Safeway can't control people's behavior. I don't think anybody would deny that. But, the environment that Safeway created certainly contributed to the situation. From this point forward, if I'm at work and my wife asks me to pick up some bread for the kids' lunches, I'll be heading to CVS or stopping at Giant on my way home. I've never felt as undervalued as a customer as I did last night. You charge more than anybody else not named Whole Foods, hire some damn employees, invest in management and training, and maybe think about some self-checkout stations. We love this Safeway! Let's start with when you arrive - MASSIVE PARKING LOT and always a spot available. When you come into the store you greeted by a clean, organized store filled with friendly staff. Nice wood flooring at the entrance, well stocked produce. Great Deli counter. If you're not finding something you need, just ask. You don't want or can't use the self-check out - just ask they'll do it for you or open a register. I've never been in there when there wasn't a cashier available, however. This is a big store with lots of amenities and conveniences. Sadly, however, during this pandemic, even with all that massive parking out front this Safeway location does NOT offer curbside pickup? Why?!!! :( I took a star off for that and was tempted to take off more. There's no reason to not offer it and they've lost business for it. The next closest that does offer curb side delivery is on Conn. Ave. with that horrible tiny parking lot and massive traffic - no thanks. read more

I am so disgusted and offended with the negative reviews at this Safeway. I chalk it up to people who love to complain more than anything else. Regarding the self-service, There are ample cashiers who serve the customers but as you've seen with a grocery industry we are moving more towards self-service kiosk and there are people on staff to help others with any issues. The meat and fish are always good and the produce is for the most part excellent. The deli counter is first rate and the service is impeccable. There are a couple of people I for being cheerful and always willing to help. Namely Robert and Crystal. I walked in there in a bad mood and come out smiling after encountering them. These are hard-working good people and people should be ashamed of themselves for denigrating them. My only complaint is that the self-service kiosks sometimes fail but that's not a dealbreaker for me read more

I've been to Safeways on both coasts and this one has to be the worst of the worst. Lousy service, expired food, etc. Never enough help at checkout. OMG! If I could give this place zero stars then I would. Okay so I only went here when I thought I was going to starve to death and it was my only option. These are only a few reasons why this is the worst grocery I have EVER been to... 1. The lines are always long and there is usually only one or two cashiers-half the time you cant find anyone to help you 2. They are out of stock of many items or never have what I am looking for 3. Outrageously overpriced! 4. I was trying to find a certain juice and asked for help. After wandering around for what seemed an eternity-I found someone to help me and found out that the juice was expired. What made it worse was that they put it back on the shelf. 5. Poor quality of food on multiple occasions-one occasion I bought strawberries and they were rotten on the bottom. Ughh. this is just awful. Stay away from here as if it was the plague. read more

So, even though I had already waited in line at the only register open around 8 pm behind about 5 people, I left all of my groceries there and walked away - and have not returned, even though I live less than five blocks away from this grocery store. It is big , not crowded, clean - nice to walk around - do not bump on other shoppers :) Not small like the one on MacArthur Blvd in DC and Davenport st. big selection!, a LOT's of sales, very nice and polite personal! This Safeway is open early, so I'm always able to stop by on my way to work/class to get breakfast or lunch for later. The store is also very conveniently located. There is a cashier there who I refer to as the "super happy lady". She is awesome! I love going through her checkout line. She is always super friendly and talks to me like she knows me. One time it was cold outside and my nose was a little runny, and she offered me a paper towel to wipe my nose. The rest of the staff is very friendly as well. I can usually find on sale items, and they have the best tomato basil soup. This is by far my favorite Safeway to shop at. read more

No leadership, unreasonably long lines, and way understaffed. Decent prices for the area and better meats & flowers than Westbard Giant. Expect to wait in line a minimum of 6-10 minutes, even in the express lane. Such a shame given the great location. read more
