Good morning! There is a stout, white-skinned woman with gray hair and glasses who stands alone at the checkout counters; she is very rude. I tried to buy some Vicks sleep aid, and she came at me like a wild animal, demanding to see my driver's license! When I replied that I don't have one, she became even ruder--she didn't even give me a chance to explain that I *do* have a valid ID! I am a 58-year-old woman. BEWARE! DO NOT PURCHASE GIFT CARDS! I purchased two gift cards from this location that were tampered with. On one card, the funds ($250) were completely drained. Luckily my daughter tried to activate her card the next day so I was able to cancel the other card I purchased to prevent fraudulent transactions. I contacted Harris Teeter about this and they didn't seem to care. They told me to dispute with the gift card company, which I did. BOTH of my cards were tampered with so I can imagine how many other cards were affected. Apparently this is becoming more common in the past year with "gift card draining". How are these scammers able to put the tampered cards back without any of the workers seeing? I would hate to think the workers are involved. You have to pull the cards out a specific way so it would be challenging to finagle the cards back in discretely. This is a nice Harris Teeter. They have two hour parking. The salad bar is okay. There are also nice premade salads. Hubby likes the sushi. The upstairs area has a Starbucks & seating. I like the option to only purchase one product during "but one get one" sales. The item will ring at half price. The self checkout is efficient. I am glad that the store uses AI to detect any fraud committed at the registers. I didn't even mind being a guinea pig when I put an empty container in my shopping bag and the action looked suspicious. The cashier apologized. I think it is a great deterrent for people who are actually stealing. The cashiers were nice. The Starbucks employees were awesome. I like the meat substitute options in stock. This Harris Teeter is a Superstar! My neighborhood Harris Teeter has been out of a number of my favorite items. I chalked it up to the problems with the food chain supply. So, I have been missing my favorite Harris Teeter milk. Low and behold, this Harris Teeter had my double homogenized milk. Yeah! The produce was beautiful! I bought grapes and strawberries and my family remarked how sweet they were. I also found my Philadelphia cream cheese with chives! Score! And, my baked Cheetos. Three for three, and I found my breakfast bars that Giant doesn't carry anymore. Yeah! The staff was warm and friendly. The only issue with this Harris Teeter is that since they are in the heart of Bethesda, you can not take the cart to the parking garage. While the check out personnel are consistently friendly and helpful, the store, itself, is lacking. The shelves, especially breads, are poorly stocked. The produce department is woefully lacking in quality in all areas, but particularly in citrus and tubers. Shoppers should always check all expiration dates carefully--perishable food (cured meats, for example) are often past use date. I wish the convenience of the store was matched by its content. If you want good produce, Safeway, Giant, and TJ's are far better options. read more

This place was a little annoying, both times I've been here. The good: - free 2 hours of parking: anything helps when it comes to Bethesda, so I'll still give this a thumbs up. lt says "towing enforced" on ALL the signs, although it's not clear how they enforce it. Don't push your luck though... - the Asian food bar was actually OK, they delivered standard, Americanized Chinese food exactly how it's expected to taste: greasy, salty, and hits the spot if you're craving that Chinese food flavor. -Far as I can see, you can probably find what you need just as much as Safeway or Giant. The bad: -Ok, how do I start. The checkout registers are a MAJOR issue. 1. Not enough checkouts. 2. SLOW. 3. If you just want to grab something quick and small at the hot bar and check out, good luck. You have to stand in line with everyone else. The lines are so bad that even the self-checkout line is clogged with people who have tons of groceries. 4. WEIRD checkout structure. You stand in line, and then suddenly you have to push your cart to the cashier and squeeze diagonally to the other side of the register. I did fine, but I can imagine it being inconvenient for anyone handicapped, elderly, or large. It could be embarrassing to have to wedge yourself through the opening to get to the other side. 5. No code for the hot bar. I tapped a few buttons and next thing you know an attendant was summoned and had to leave his register and type in a code for the hot bar. 6. There's a Starbucks on the next level up, but you have to either walk up the stairs or take an elevator. So if you have a lot of groceries that's a drag. Once you get up there, you discover your seating options are either a bar counter with a LOUD plasma tv blaring in your face (with wall outlets), or a bunch of tables--with no outlets in sight. Anyway, I was annoyed because my plan was to grab a bite and work on some things. But instead I spent way too much time in line at the checkout and my laptop battery is draining out. Do NOT order a child's birthday cake from their bakery. I've done so before and they've been great but clearly they're not even trying anymore. If they can't do an actual screen design, they should call parents and give them the option of going elsewhere with enough notice. They hadn't even done any lettering as I'd requested, like the name and "Happy birthday" and the guy insisted I hadn't asked for that and then looked again and was like, "Oh, you did" so we waited to have lettering added to this wildly disappointing cake. This place is about a 5 minute walk from my house and right next door to Flats 8300 (if you are a student/intern at USU/Walter Reed). I come here about 3-5 times/week since it is so close to my place. Everyone I've talked to so far informed me that Harris Teeter is quite expensive, especially compared to Whole Foods or Trader Joes, but, for me, it is convenient, and I found ways to save money. The customer service is quite friendly (I had lost my ID and shaker bottle here several times), and they had refunded me on an item they accidentally charged twice. Some downsides I saw: look carefully at the expiration date for items. Within the last year of using this as my primary grocery store, there were some items that were expired but still being sold. In addition, if you're buying multiple items with a yellow discount sticker on them that states like "$3 off," it is better to go to the cashier rather than self-checkout. The self-checkout system doesn't process that discount well, so you often need a cashier helper to override the system error/warning. When you do checkout at the cashier though, make sure you're tracking to see if they scan the discount. If you buy a lot of items, they may accidentally forgot to scan the discount. Tips to Save Money: 1. Get the Harris Teeter e-Vic card to save on Harris Teeter deals/specials. 2. Check out the $1/bag grocery stand in the back of the store near the produce area. You can find some great deals (eg. a bag of tomatoes/bell peppers for $1 or some bananas)! 3. Look around for $2-5 off discount that on produce/meat products. The freshly-packaged meat area near the back right of the store and the sausage area often has some of these stickers on a Friday. You may also find some on the salad/mushrooms in the prepackaged produce area at the front left portion of Harris Teeter. I normally stop by the seafood dip area/smoked salmon area to check for discounts. The best discount I received so far was about 75 cents for a package of 4-5 sausages. Safe to say, it was a sausage galore for me the next few weeks. 4. Check out the carts at the front of the store. There are often sale items, but the deals may not be that great! There was a cake mix, but I found that there were even cheaper cake mixes in the actual store. I did buy a few "one-time use" stockings here though for about $2-3 each. This store has the worst self checkout machines ever. The store is big and has a good selection of things you might not always find at nearby stores. But good lord the stupid self checkout machines are so hyper sensitive they make you feel like a thief often cause of the times it must call the attendant to make sure your scanning the correct items. Often times the regular checkout lanes are all closed so they forces people to use self checkout. Or they have one lane open, I always try to avoid the self checkout cause the machines are hyper sensitive and not accurate so they send off a false alert to the attendants to go gotta look through your items like your forgot to scan something. This only happens once in a while but it's so annoying. IF they are so worried about theft then have more regular lanes open. pretty simple. read more

Harris teeter has a wide selection of groceries very similar to costco. The brands can range from mid-high quality with more of an emphasis on mid point pricing and quality. They have lots of food categories and aisles to browse, including a live cheese section. Staff is on hand to help but sometimes self-check out can be broken. read more

Harris Teeter is definitely pricier than Giant but their selection is way bigger. Most people shopping here adhere to better COVID precautions too (masks and social distancing). They also have an underground garage that makes parking way easier than any other place around. The self checkout lanes tend to get backed up but I've never had to wait more than 10 minutes to check out. The Starbucks on the top floor and the cafe (temporarily closed at the moment) are a nice touch for longer trips. If you have a child under the age of 1 they will give you a free mini cake on their birthday. read more

How Many Women are Working at Horrible places Like Harris Teeter Bethesda MD? Today I popped into my local Harris Teeter to pick up some cold cuts for my guests' charcuterie board. Bougie and privileged shopping list I know, but this was a special buffet for my grown daughter and her 3 friends from Brooklyn visiting for the weekend. At the deli counter a lovely petite brown skinned woman greeted me and helped me identify the turkey she would ultimately slice and package for me. While she endeavored to fulfill my order a tall thick white woman whose name tag said KAREN came over to the deli counter and said where is your name tag? Hey everyone look for "Asi's" name tag with vitriol. This Karen said some other things under her breath to Asi while walking with another man behind the deli counter. Clearly upset, Asi smiled stressfully at me and began to slice the turkey in the machine. Before Asi could bag the turkey, Karen came back again saying something snarky to Asi and belittling her. Asi gave the nervous smile of all of my diasporic sisters working with women like Karen. She was a full grown woman working at a shite job and this woman was coming for her as if she was less than a person, someone who could be spoken down to with impunity. I hated being there and immediately identified with Asi. I thanked Asi and said I hoped her day would get better while glaring at Karen. In retrospect I realized Karen's impunity came from the fact that 2 brown people were involved -customer and employee. Karen moved like a field boss at harvest time circa 1800. It was a clear throughline. I called the manager after I got home and reported what I saw. I can only hope that the plantation privilege of people like this Karen can be undercut by customers who hate her behavior. You can't treat human like that. Full stop. read more

This Harris Teeter has the supermarket formula down pat. It features a bright and inviting interior, a Starbucks at the entrance and approachable employees. The merchandise is organized in an intuitive fashion. The prices don't break the bank but aren't the greatest deals. The prices are on par with Whole Foods, so no savings there. The driver's license requirement to obtain a store card is excessive, especially since stores like Giant and Safeway allow you to sign up for store cards without giving up all your personal data. read more

I went in at about 8 this morning and... - There were three other shoppers besides me in the store and almost no parking on the Harris Teeter only level. Full cart = no fun for me. Not a great customer experience. - Tried to buy bagels--8 a.m.after all, breakfast time and when 9-5 people are trying to buy things to take to the office. Two bagels in the case. Called "Hello?" to the three people behind the deli/bakery counter twice to ask if there were any available and was completely ignored--not even a glance upwards. Review for delivery only: blame COVID but I have started to rely on grocery delivery. So the plus side is the produce quality has been great. I was happy to see that fruits/veggies were actually chosen carefully - versus just being thrown in the cart. The young lady who does the call to update on any replacements is upbeat and helpful. The downside? The shoppers really don't pay attention to any notes I put on my order which is frustrating because sometimes certain items aren't shown on the app but I know I have seen them in store - ex: ordered chicken and wrote please replace w/HT brand (because it wasn't showing up on app) but clearly no one read the note. Or certain items go with notes - ex: I ordered single bagels and wrote "everything bagels" and got a plain bagel and a donut huh? I also don't see an option to "add tip" for delivery which they should add. I don't feel safe leaving cash just laying in my mailbox (due to social distancing) as a tip. Finally! A Harris Teeter less than three miles from my home! This newly constructed store has only been open four days, and it was buzzing on a Saturday afternoon. There's plenty of underground parking (with a two hour limit) with entrances off Woodmont and Battery Lane. There was no gate attendant on my visit. This store has it all. One thing they offered during this grand opening week was Lobster Rolls for $7.99! I hope this is a regular thing, because it was really tasty even though it was made with an ordinary hot dog bun. Their hot food bar had lots of options for meals to go, but the shrimp [with artichoke] was mushy. I had to toss that portion of my meal. At the HT in North Bethesda you can pay for your food bar purchase at a dedicated register right by the bar, eat at a table on that level or outside, and pay for your groceries later. Here you have to pay for it with your groceries, and if you want to eat it there, take an elevator (if you have lots of heavy bags) upstairs to the limited tables where the Starbucks is located. Because of this, I won't be a food bar customer again. It's well organized, but will take me a while to adjust to the different layout from my regular HT. It's something I'll have to adjust to since it is much closer to home, and I've got $10 off $50 coupons to use for this store only. Hopefully now there will HT weekly flyers included with all the other grocery stores' ads I receive in the mail. read more

The lines are always backed up because they're only 1-2 open. Also, in self-checkout it's a nightmare. The young girl monitoring the self-checkout was literally wandering around and giving a lot of space, but as soon as she saw me (an African-American customer) not only did she come close, she literally stood less than a foot behind me so she could see over my shoulder. After I paid, she casually walked away despite there being 3 white customers checking out. Really tired of this behavior as it's not the first time. We shouldn't have to go through this to buy sky-high groceries like everyone else. It's humiliating, deflating, hurtful, and so unnecessary. read more

Newest HT store located adjacent to the Flats 8300 Apartments, on the corner of Battery Lane & Woodmont Avenue. Street level entrance off of Battery Lane, with 2 parking garages on each street. They held the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony in the parking garage for the grand opening, with a special visitor, Deputy District Director, Karen McManus from Congressman Chris Van Hollen's office. Although the store emulates the HT stamp, the expansion of space & inventory was a breeze to walk through. Floral department is enormous, the Sushi Section offers a huge selection & the Fresh Seafood & Meat area has it's own corner of everything. I did notice some items that the White Flint location has as this store does not, yet I was told to contact the Store or Produce Manager to put in a request...so that works out perfectly. For special needs such as Kosher, Organic & such, there is not a dedicated area, as the products are situated in between the regular inventory. For the Starbuck Superstars, it's on the upper (street) level from the market. Other tidbits, there's 8 checkout aisles, 4 Express aka Self Checkouts, the Pharmacy is open from 9am-9pm M-F, 10am-7pm Sat & 10am-6pm on Sun. There's also an online shopping service, I'll guess that the box located in the garage with a button & speaker is the apparatus to let HT you're there to pick up your groceries. A quick shout out to Tandy for her handy customer service & the entire staff as EVERYONE I encountered was Uber friendly & extremely helpful. I came to this Harris Teeter to purchase pre-sliced fruit and caramel dip. It's obvious someone in produce never checks expiration dates on their products. The caramel dip plastic containers were super dusty and had expired nearly a year ago! This is not the first time I've come to this location to find my groceries had expired once I got home to unpack them. I love this place to go grocery shopping. They always have samples to try of cheeses and fruit. Once you try the samples you have to buy it because the fruits are perfectly ripe and the cheeses are delicious. The staff are friendly and always willing to help you find what you need. HT Bethesda, today was the day you lost me. I've noticed over my last several visits that this location has a hard time keeping the shelves stocked, and it seemed even worse this morning, with wide swaths of empty shelf space, particularly in the dairy department. There were signs of potential stocking activity, like the many carts that were in the produce section - but the carts were just sitting there, blocking the aisles and causing a traffic jam, with customers bumping into each other as they tried to maneuver around. The dairy cart that rolled past me was piled high (taller than me at 6'1"), but with only one person stocking, it looked like an impossible task. One thing HT has always been good about is providing non-expiring rain checks for items that are out of stock. Hoping to take advantage of some of the sale pricing for the items that were not on the aforementioned shelves, I went to the customer service desk, and proceeded to wait for over five minutes for someone to arrive, listening to the phone on the desk ring and ring and ring while I waited. When the nice gentleman did arrive, I asked, "Is it just me, or do things seem to be a bit disorganized today?" He sighed, and said "Yes, they are." At this point, and to their credit, it became obvious that the customer service folks were doing what they could to pitch in and help out on the floor. What also became obvious is that this store, in general, is seriously understaffed -- and that's a failure of management. The one brights spot in all of this was the polite and earnest young man (whose name I believe is Ian) who called for customer service desk assistance for me multiple times. He certainly embodied the customer service ethic, and he should be on HT's radar screen for a larger role at the store. So, a word to the wise, HT - you might be the fresh new kid in town, but if there's one thing that the folks in Bethesda won't put up with, it's a bad shopping experience. While it's nice to have a supermarket nearby, location doesn't really matter when you find yourself having to repeatedly make a second stop because the neighborhood supermarket can't keep the shelves stocked. Most of us drive to the supermarket, so we're already in the car and wouldn't think twice about going somewhere better for 'one-stop shopping' within a reasonable distance... and yes, some of us do indeed make the trip up to Wegmans on a regular basis, where the prices are lower, the shelves are plentiful, and the experience is always first-rate. read more

Three and a quarter stars. Parking garage entrance is on Battery Lane, pedestrian entrance on the corner of Battery and Woodmont. VIC card or bust your wallet, and gift cards incur a service fees if they're not used within a year. Layout's not super-intuitive, but the aisle signs will get you there in the end. There were only two registers open, so the line for self-checkout was more than half a dozen deep. Bethesda's fourth Starbucks is upstairs if you need caffeine. Lots of grab-and-go dining options. Inventory seems more selective than what I'd typically be able to find at an HT in Virginia-- they didn't stock 4 particular items I was looking for (whole chia seeds, non-powdered acai, semolina flour, wasabi mayo). One of the peanut butter machines was out of order, and the small bulk section needed restocking. Most of the floor staff are a little aloof, which left me hunting down someone at the customer service counter to confirm that I wasn't just looking in the wrong aisle. That said, the produce they carry is noticeably more fresh than what you'd find at the closest Safeway and Giant, and you certainly have more options than at the even smaller Trader Joe's. read more

I've been waiting for this Harris Teeter to open since the dawn of time. Even before I knew there was anything being built in that abandoned huge lot, I was like... man, a Harris Teeter would be reeeealll nice there. Then, when the construction started, and I dealt with streets being dug up, the ground being blasted by dynamite every hour, our water randomly going out in our building every other month or so... I was like... there better be a Harris Teeter being built up in that b. Then, signs started to go up, and it was clear that a Harris Teeter was planned for the underbelly of another cookie cutter Bozzuto property... I was like... Harris Teeter better not back out of this b. I gots some shoppin' to do! See, the closest grocery store before the Harris Teeter opened was the Safeway on the corner of Old Georgetown and Woodmont. That Safeway is.... terrible. The produce is not fresh, the seafood looks like it's been there a week too long, the store layout is awkward, there are constantly only 2 cashiers on, and a line of like 20 people at each one. They never have sprouts. I mean... we're talking slim pickings. Then, this beautiful Harris Teeter opened. 4 self check out stations, an underground free garage, a Starbucks on the mezzanine, the produce is fresh as can be, the deli is well appointed and stocked. It's not the biggest Harris Teeter I've ever seen, but I've gone 20 times so far and found everything I wanted ('cept one time when I couldn't find Semolina flour). I mean... this is easily the Harris Teeter of my dreams, wishes, prayers, pennies in all those fountains, hopes, warm embraces. Thank you HT for all the love in Bethesda. Frankly just terrible till options. I prefer self service which should be a good option given how few workers staff the tills. But four cramped self service fills in a store this size is just not keeping to modern standards. It's been an issue for a long time. Given how few tills you run, please remove some and make space for some modern self serve layouts. He did not know where. And sent me to customer service. I approached the lady at customer service and asked if she could restock the lids at the grinding station so I could have one. And she sent me to the Olive bar. Sure there's lids there all the way back of the store when I was at the front of the store. Why is she in customer service? Oh well. By the way there were plenty of employees working today which was nice to see. But checking out is always an issue. Self-service of course is always open. And one solo cash register was running.
