I wanted to THANK the staff yesterday for all their help. I ordered a poached salmon for a party and I accidently made it for the wrong day. I arrived yesterday at 4:15 PM to pick it up for a 6 PM party. When my mistake was realized, they quickly got to work and I was able to pick up my poached salmon at 5:30. We had our Christmas Eve dinner catered by them and it was phenomenal: paella Valenciana, lentils, butternut squash, tortilla Espanola, croquetas de bacalao- which we fried ourselves, flan, all well prepared and absolutely delicious! The only flop was the arroz con dulce- too milky. Nonetheless, we would order from here again- we've also had their delicious crab cakes, empanadas, guacamole and fresh fish- what an absolute treat in Bethesda! We visited Pescadeli as a scouting mission to compare it to our favorite Kensington Market, which recently closed. Pescadeli is a "sister" shop and seeing their set-up and products it's easy to see the similarities to Kensington Market. The fish case was well stocked and they carried the crab bombs that we always enjoyed. We were well stocked on seafood at home and would want to try Pescadeli's seafood freshly cooked at home,so we didn't make any purchases during our visit. We were happy to see that we could use Pescadeli as a go to for fresh seafood and for the crab cakes. Between Pescadeli and Butchers Alley they share 5 parking spots. We parked on the street at a metered spot but parking wasn't too difficult on a week day. read more

It's nice to have a neighborhood spanish bodega but you'd have to double-check the pricing, which is high. And, I don't mind if its displayed. However, the scale for the paella is 100% inaccurate. The owners ought to realise that *repeat* neighborhood guests are the basis of the success of their business. A practice of putting their thumb on the scale will not bring them back, just look at the neighboring tenant. read more

Pescadeli is the fantastic little fishmonger that is tucked away in downtown Bethesda that everyone should be visiting. They specialize in local fish and seafood, but also include hard to find species (like dorade and hake(merluza) which they fly fresh from Europe. They also have freshly prepared dishes to go, like Galician tuna empanadas and at least two types of paellas. Recommended highly ! read more

National Empanada Day and this was the closest for me to get one (or two). I got two chicken empanadas, perfect size for lunch. I've never been to the store so I checked out some of their goods. Aside from the obvious fish, they also sell some produce and dry goods. They carry my latest obsession- olive oil tortas. Flaky delicious flatbreads. The staff were nice, the store was clean. There's parking for two cars immediately in front of the store, and three across the street in front of Butcher's Alley. I came in the middle of a work day, so didn't have a problem snagging one of the front spots. read more

Pescadeli is a tiny shop in Bethesda. They have a seafood area, and a butchers area. My family has been patronizing this shop since it's inception. In sum, the oysters are consistently excellent (if you are comfortable with the current risk ;). The seafood paella was disappointing (we ordered that for the first time this Christmas). Lots of rice, very little seafood, very overpriced. The ratatouille was fine. Solid. The baguette was weak and overpriced. Overall, if this boutique spot wants to keep its prices up (and customers loyal), they need to maintain high quality all around. read more

I love the fish here. My wife and I went in to buy some crab cakes for our family for dinner and enjoy a shrimp cocktail together while we were there. We bought the shrimp cocktail, 8 shrimp, enough for two. The manager served us the shrimp but no cocktail sauce. I requested some. He told us we had to buy it. What? He pointed to the fridge where there was a tub for sale. I said I just wanted enough to enjoy our "shrimp cocktail." He reaches under the counter and gives me a plastic cup with about a tablespoon of cocktail sauce. I asked for another because there wasn't enough for one let alone both of us. "No," he said, pointing to the tub in the fridge, "that's all you get. Buy some if you want more." Well that really dampened our experience, took the joy out of the moment. I never understand when a pricey upscale place makes a point of gouging you for necessities of the meal. I spent about $50 (36 for the crabcakes, 12 for the cocktail). Next they'll be charging for napkins. Food was good. But they get 2 stars because the service was regrettable. If I had it to do over again I would have gone elsewhere for our dinner to avoid that experience. read more

Very nice local seafood market. Lots of fresh fish, shrimp, scallops, clams and mussels. They sell huge crab cakes but they weren't my favorite. The owner is Spanish, so there are many Spanish products and prepared foods like paella, empanadas, tres leches and flan which can be purchased. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Prices are reasonable. It's so nice to support a local store in Bethesda. read more

I'm writing a review based upon a disappointing customer service experience. As a Bethesda resident I appreciate local businesses and try to support them. But customer service is a high priority to thrive in this market. I made a purchase of scallops and two Branzinos. The cashier rung me up and asked if I wanted a bag. And I said yes. I arrive home to prepare for a small birthday dinner. Once I get to the bag I only see scallops in the bag. By this time they have just closed so no one is picking up the phone. So I rush back to the market to while my guests are waiting for me at my house. Then when I get to the market the cashier blames me for not watching what she's putting in the bag. If she knew all of my purchases were not in the bag, all you say is please wait while we finish your order versus creating a logistical nightmare for your customers. Hoping that customer service continues to improve so that I can remain a loyal customer. read more

Pesca is such a hidden little gem. If you weren't looking for it, you'd probably miss it, but once inside, you'll become a devoted fan. Besides their huge selection of fresh seafood, they have imported European groceries, lots of prepared Spanish foods, Jamon Serrano, salamis, and other charcuterie, selections of mostly Spanish cheeses, and from what I gather, they are also in the process of adding a kitchen. My tip to the owners: invest not just in Spanish cheeses, but also go full force on French cheeses. Have an entire cheese program. There is no cheese shop anywhere in this area. If you can bring an incredible selection of cheeses to the area, you can stand out as THE charcuterie destination in Bethesda/Chevy Chase. read more

I would have loved to have given this place an extra star but two things are killing it: 1) the "parking spots" out front are a joke! I've got a SMALL sports car but you could not fit 2 of them in the two "spots" out front! Those are "1/2" parking spots at best! 2) the smell when you walk in the door in overwhelming! I do not understand the comments about the 2 parking spaces in front of the business being half spaces. I drive a Subaru Legacy and have often parked easily in those spots. When there are no spots, there are parking meters a short walk up the street. Maybe it's busier than when it was A&H but I never had to wait as described here. Really good for Portugese olive oil (Herdade do Esporao), sardines and anchovies, olives, and fresh fish. I have enjoyed monkfish, grouper, and sole here. read more

Best Fish and dairy place from Spain and Portugal, and others. We love your Gravlax. We try to have every Friday Gravlax and seafood combo for our dinner. Recently I realized your seafood salad has sand, and I had to try crunching slowly. 2 months ago some small stone (how can I express? It's like a particle of several sands ) damaged my left lower tooth. But still I love it. 2 Friday's ago, I really noticed the salad was very sandy. Today I asked my husband to tell the problem to the staff. He got Gravlax and seafood salad, but totally forgot to tell about sand in the salad. Staff are nice and knowledgeable, cheerful. I just want to remind them of cleaning well the fish for salad. Well, we will have dinner soon. How will the salad go? Hope I don't have to worry about it at first bite. read more

I love to prepare fresh fish and I like to see it whole prior to cooking it. Pescadeli in Bethesda has been a very good spot to get fresh fish. But the secret is their fishmonger staff who know how to prepare fish exactly the way the customer wants to have it. I bought a 3.1 lb whole rockfish today and Mr Santiago butterflied it with precision and professionalism taking care to trim the product to such an expert outcome. He took all the small ribs out and trimmed it with the skill of a surgeon. I love this gem of a market. read more

If you drive too fast down Bethesda Ave, you will miss this little nugget. Spanish themed, squeaky clean seafood market right next to that landmark Bethesda Crab House....and just as pricey. Parking is limited, but it's finally warm out so walking is encouraged for good heart health! If you like extremely fresh seafood, and a variety of Spanish 'boutique' grocery store items, this little market is a beautiful treat. I found gourmet canned sardines, tuna, cockles, sea urchin (tres expensive) among other rare treasures! Portuguese sausage, salami, breads, cheeses, dry pastas, oh my!!!!! Brazilian coffee - beans and ground. Portuguese hot piri piri sauce ....yummy and spicy... There are charcuterie and cheese platters (exquisite Serrano ham on these), soups, seafood platters, empanadas, and a variety of Spanish desserts. There is even a catering menu available! And the fresh seafood.....daily deliveries...with the best time to buy being around noon M-FRI! Grouper, sole, flounder, salmon, red snapper, crab cakes, crab meat, and fresh shrimp to name just a few of the fresh offerings. And last but not least, an amazing variety of olive oils, and vinegars to select from. I've been frequenting this place for a couple years now, back from when it was only a counter and fish to its new shinier setup. The guys who work here don't lie; ask them what's fresh and what cooking method you have in mind, and they'll hook you up. From whole fish to filets, they know their craft. Most recently, I enjoyed some rockfish that was so fresh, the skin and dark bits weren't even slightly fishy. The scaling job was so good, I ate the skin after broiling it with some thinly sliced onions, pepper, lemon juice, and dotted with butter. My plate was clean. :) Additionally, you need to check out their freezer. There are frozen whole sardines that I plan to go back and buy (if you've never had fresh grilled sardines, they are a revelation that will kindle some very intense serious sardine love), white anchovies packed in olive oil that I'm VERY curious about, frozen rabbit, quail, and even frozen bouillabaisse starter kits. ...Not to mention sausages, other cured things, tons of olive oils and vinegars, pimenton (spicy and sweet), and other ingredients you may have drooled over while watching Jose Andres on Made in Spain (very fun show; it's on PBS and dvds now, I think). I have a major crush on this place. You can go here, then do a quick detour to Cork 47 (or 75 or 56 or some number) across the street for some wine, and bang, you have a party. I was originally looking for Bethesda Crab House by it was closed so I stopped here next door and the staff is very friendly and professional. I got the fried shrimp and fries, Baltimore style crab cake and crab salad. I don't understand any of the negative comments in some of the posts here. (fortunately they are very outweighed by all the positive comments). I love the place. Everything positive that was said in other comments is true. Why else would Jose Andres and other top restauranteurs buy fish there? An added bonus for me (and you,if you ask) - they will call me when they get something unusual that I really like, such as NE pink shrimp (season is coming!), live sea urchins, ankimo (monkfish liver). Minor things - you have never had such high quality and delicious canned sardines as the specialties that they stock. And speaking of live sardines, that is on the menu tonight! And if their two-car parking place is full, you can illegally park along the street without worrying about a ticket (at least that is my good experience).- You can also gather some the best new recipes from the Embassy and restaurant staff who are waiting to buy. read more

Everywhere else I try to go, Giant, Safeway or Cannon's in G-town either doesn't have the size I need or is insanely overpriced. Fresh seafood is excellent here and they are extremely helpful. However, once I came with my elderly mother, and the guy behind the counter was totally rude to her because she had the gall to be specific about the filet she wanted. I popped in for a visit today after learning from the Butchers Alley staff that these two establishments are under the same ownership. Quite pleased that Bethesda proper now has a quality meat market, I was hoping that Pescadeli would also be a step up from the ordinary. When asked if they carry "organic" salmon, I was chagrined to discover that their farm raised salmon varieties were not organic. I mentioned to the counter man that I know of three vendors within the vicinity that do carry organic salmon (Balducci's, Wagshals, and the seafood vendor at Bethesda Sunday Farmers Market). He seemed a bit nonplussed at my comments. I hope that this omission will be quickly corrected. read more

They have fish that is reasonably fresh and reasonably priced. They are better for certain types (e.g. Branzino) than others (salmon is not a strong suit --recently they couldn't even say what type of wild salmon they were selling). But it is not just worth the wait -- I have recently had to wait for 25 minutes to buy 2 pieces of fish -- there were only two servers, a number of customers, and they were too disorganized to take them in order. Plus, only 2 parking spaces in front and with public parking a 1 1/2 blocks away, so you can't even check how crowded they are without a hike. They have lost me as a customer, and I would advise staying away until they do a better job of serving their customers. read more

Very fresh fish and shellfish, including excellent clams and mussels, and generally an excellent selection of what is being caught at a given time. You will not find equivalent quality except usually at significantly higher prices, for example at the fine market in Black Salt. As others note, the staff at A and H, some from the Mediterranean, will also recommend what is really good and absolutely the freshest, if you explain what types of fish you like and/or how you'd like to cook it. They also have good suggestions for good ways to cook things you have not tried. Over several years we have never experienced anything but very courteous, helpful staff. Prices are very fair and honest. They have interesting Spanish groceries as well. One of only a handful of genuine small businesses remaining in the downtown Bethesda area, it is terrific, and reminds me of fish markets and the great fish we could get when I was growing up in NYC. Used to be a regular customer, not any more... Ordered a suckling pig for Easter 2012 (the third in the last 18 months). Got it home Good Friday evening only to discover that the pig (flash frozen) was spoiled - brown with obvious signs of freezer burn, instead of the normal pink color. It also started to stink as soon as the thawing begun... I called A&H the following morning and had one of the most frustrating customer service experiences EVER. The guy on the phone (older gentleman with a heavy Portuguese accent - a regular at the store) was rude and unapologetic. He repeated multiple times that this was not his fault but their supplier's - in my book, you sell something, you are responsible for its quality and condition. When I mentioned that I would be returning it, he made it sound like he was doing me a favor - "well, if you don't want it I cannot make you keep it"... keep in mind this thing was NOT edible... Finally, he never once apologized for the ordeal and inconvenience! In addition to selling spoiled meat, A&H totally messed up our Easter plans since they had no other pig to substitute and I was left on Saturday to scrabble for other meal arrangements for our guests. To be fair, when my wide returned it later that day, she was not given a hard time and she was issued the refund with no troubles - the stink and spoiled appearance of the pig were indisputable... I would however, have expected minimally an apology and an acknowledgement that their subpar quality control caused major inconvenience to us. Staff happens so I can excuse them for the spoiled meat, I cannot however excuse them for the stinky customer service... A&H has always charged premium prices for their products, it's time to start offering premium customer service as well!!! read more

By far, the best place to buy fish in Bethesda. Great arctic char, monkfish, salmon: you name it. They also have a great selction of olives, cheeses and various side dishes. They now have three additional parking spots across the street in front of the water store. read more
