This used to be my main grocery store for years. Moved away for a year and just got back into town and decided to stop in for some groceries. I'm seriously disappointed in the experience I had here and I will never return to this grocery store again. My boyfriend came in to shop here with our reusable bags and I was meeting him here after an appointment. As I walk in my boyfriend meets me by the front where the produce area where the security guard who's been there for years accuses us of trying to steal bags of groceries as I'm walking in to meet him and see what else we still needed to buy. WE HAVE REUSABLE BAGS FOR A REASON, BUT THATS A REASON TO ACCUSE SOMEONE OF STEALING. Needless to say we won't be coming back to shop here. It's a complete insult being customers here for years and we've had plenty of conversations with this man for him to accuse us of trying to steal. Besides who tries to walk out of a store with one entrance with multiple bags of groceries?! Is that a joke?! SO DISAPPOINTED. I guess canton really has gone downhill. read more

This place has a limited selection of everything and impossibly long lines. Prices are a LOT higher than nearby grocery stores. Also, be sure to check the expiration date on everything you grab because, in my experience, there is a better-than-not chance that it'll be expired by more than a few days (sometimes WEEKS.) Avoid this place and drive to Harris Teeter. Or grow your own garden. Just do anything to avoid this place. read more

wow, you yelpies are pretty rough on safeway... i, for one, think it's pretty great. the good: selection. i love cooking and make a lot of ethnic foods and need odd ingredients pretty often; i've never had a problem finding anything i need here. there is a wide variety of brands and types of both fresh and packaged foods. produce. it's more or less always fresh, which is tough to do in the dead of winter. there are also organic options for pretty much everything. layout. aisles are wide and clearly marked, and it's just, well, pretty inside. customer service. every cashier i've ever had has been cheerful and friendly, looking me in the eye, asking how i am, bidding me good day (or a more modern version of that...). i went on superbowl sunday when everyone and their ferret was out getting wings and soda and cheese plates, and even though the average line consisted of about 20 people, i only waited maybe 6 or 8 minutes. the bad (i.e. the reason it doesn't get 5 stars): prices. my shopping strategy is to go to aldi first and get everything i need that they actually have, then go to safeway and get the rest because aldi is cheaper than "mean girls 2" but their selection is crap. to be fair, safeway's prices aren't really higher than any of the other chain store giants, just higher than i want to pay. self-checkout. WHY DO THESE THINGS NEVER WORK?? you always end up needing cashier assistance anyway, which completely defeats the point. and that's that. read more

This is a much nicer looking store than the Giant at the Rotunda, which is where I used to do most of my shopping, but their prices & product selection are mediocre. I've seen far worse supermarkets in my day, but considering the large amount of space this store has they could do a lot better. read more

Stuff is just so expensive here! They take full advantage of being the only grocery store in the area. Staff is nice and friendly but someones super slow at checkout especially when they get crowded on Sundays. Produce and meat are fresh and they have a decent (but improvable) international section. Its too bad this is the only choice we have in Baltimore! read more

Not the best Safeway I've been to, but adequate. The check out clerks are nice, but there are never enough of them, particularly later in the day. The deli counter is not great, and looks a bit grimy. Produce is OK. If there was a Harris Teeters closer by I'd go there. read more

Doesn't anyone at Safeway, locally or nationally, pay any attention to the reviews of the Canton store? I am agreement with the overwhelmingly bad reviews; afternoon, early evening, late at night, there is a lack of cashiers, broken self-service machines, rude and poorly trained cashiers and service personnel. Carts are scattered everywhere in the parking lot but few if any at the entrance, no one at the service desk but usually several employees smoking on the sidewalk. Harris-Teeter, I can hardly wait. In the meantime, it's Whole Foods for me. read more

Not as bad as some Safeways in Maryland but not outstanding either. Usually I come right before closing when the store is being restocked and is not busy. It always appears clean and normally the checkout people are nice. Always I am asked by the stocking clerks if I need help finding anything. Or they say hello. I really like that, it's almost like shopping in a small town where everyone cares. Selection is pretty standard. Huge floral section and produce is big. Good selection of baked goods. I like Safeway so I will continue to shop here when in the area. read more

Wow, what the heck happened to this place. The service has been on a consistent downslide for years. I went in tonight, 7pm on Saturday 4/7. It was pretty quiet as far as customer traffic goes and the store was running on a lean crew, but definitely decently staffed in proportion to the traffic. I went in to buy cupcakes and get a few balloons blown up for a birthday party I'm attending this evening. A sign at the floral counter reads: "If this desk is not staffed, please come see us at the customer service desk and we will be happy to help." Since the desk was empty, did just that. The customer service desk was staffed by two tragically disconnected sarcastic women who seemed like they'd rather be anywhere else. I get it. I work retail. But come on, your job is to put on a fake smile and get on with it. Before I had a chance to speak, she points to a checkout aisle and says "She's opening on 7 sir, you can go there," to which I kindly replied that I needed some help in florals. I said "All I need is a few balloons blown up." She rolls her eyes, picks up the intercom, and says that somebody needs help in the floral dept. She then blurts out that someone will be there in a few. Skeptical, I walk back over there, where I proceed to wait a full 10 min, during which time I watch numerous groups of employees walking around, not working or working very slowly, socializing with one another. After 10 min, I walked over to the totally unmanned self-checkout and bought my cupcakes and left, during which time I could have walked out without paying at any moment since all the employees were more interested in not doing anything much at all. Small win; The young man mopping the bakery area helped me with cupcakes and was super nice and professional. Maybe he should be promoted and those sassy sarcastic ladies at the customer service desk can find jobs where they aren't accountable for the in-store experience. read more

This is a much smaller safeway than I have been to before. It has everything you might need, fresh bakery, fresh meats and a deli section. Safeway is very expensive so if you plan on frequenting this chain often, make sure that you get a safeway card, that will significantly help lower the prices. Other than that, this is a clean and friendly location. read more

Safeway! Thank goodness you're around. After our favorite local grocery store, Superfresh, closed and was replaced by the strange and grammatically incorrect Fresh & Green's, we were distraught. Wherever would we buy our food! My boyfriend and I both like to cook and eat, so we quickly scanned the downtown Baltimore area for a new option. Safeway popped up on Google Maps. Ok, let's try it. It turned out to be worth it. A very nice, organized, and well stocked store across from the water. The people working there as well as the patrons have all been pleasant. Some grocery stores, *ahem Giant in the Rotunda in Hampden* are terrible (in all aspects...). So this was a breath of fresh air. Try their red potato and dill potato salad by the deli section. It's already packaged and AWESOME. I'm also a fan of the pan roasted turkey at the deli counter. Get a half pound of that junk and make some delicious sandwiches! The prices aren't the cheapest you're gonna find, but I'd take spending a few more dollars for a good shopping experience. Never again am I going to a ghetto grocery store. It has seemed to be a bit understaffed at the checkout too, good thing we don't use those... The self checkout area (our fav.) is a bit too small. It's okay for normal people but we are silly and like to pile $200+ worth of items on it. Oh don't worry, we are pros at it and will be out of your way shortly. It's a very nice Safeway, and has a selection just like the rest of the mainstream supermarkets in the Baltimore region (fine if you eat processed food and supplement with fresh items from time to time). It offers a bakery, a pharmacy, a florist, a deli and a hot food counter. It also has adequate parking. Oh - it also has a Starbucks. Maybe a bank too (I don't use it though). The women I have encountered in the floral department are great - that's why I called them a florist; they will arrange something for you and package for gift-giving. The store has security hanging out just inside the store. There are also 4 self-serve checkout machines. I generally go there on weekdays during lunch and the crowd is moderate...not too bad. read more

The bakery staff is amazing - ask for Nina!

This place is miserable and severely lacking in the customer service aspect. There were several items mislabeled. When I brought it up, the staff would not honor the price. I went back and took pictures to show them how they had been wrong and the cashier would not acknowledge their mistake. I asked to speak to the manager and was told I had to wait. 10 minutes or so went by until she came out of the back. She was incredibly rude, as were her cashiers, throughout the whole ordeal. Staff has always been friendly, one two occasions, the florist and the ready-made-food staff have gone out of their way to assist me. The check out lanes tend to be long and could use more open lanes, but this is the only grocery store to serve Canton, Brewers Hill, Butchers Hill, and Fells. That's a lot of people for one store. Personally, I cannot do all my shopping at Whole Foods and the parking over there is cruddy. My 3 complaints with this Safeway....again, the long lines. Also the ready-made-food runs out quickly. I was there at 6pm on a Tuesday and most everything was gone. Also, they tend to stock the more expensive items only. I needed mint chocolate and they did not have Andie's mints, but has Ghirardelli for 3x's the price. This has happened on several occasions. They'll need to step up their game before Harris Tetter opens up on Boston! read more

I am an disabled attorney whose home and law office is across the street from this this Safeway. I moved to the neighborhood froim Towson in 2005. Then, I shopped exclusively at Eddies and Grauls and Tuxedo Pharmacy handled my meds. In the past decade, my disability has progressed and Safeway, a national chain and union shop has more than met my increasing my health challenges. At one point, i did not possess the strength to carry my groceries back home. THE ASSISTANT MANAGER TOOK A BREAK AND CARRIED MY GROCERIES HOME. Not only is the staff 100% in compliance with the ADA, they are kind and very very funny. The best comedians in the City of Baltimore are the hard-working, union-dues paying employees of the Safeway in Canton. Bravo! read more

If I could give this Safeway no stars, I would. Poorly stocked, filthy, not enough checkout staff, service desk is never manned, staff is rude, management is clueless. Don't ask for something that is out of stock - you will get the stock answer that Safeway didn't send them any. Don't look at the bottom of the milk case - absolutely disgusting! I'm giving them one star because I had to click something. This is the single worst grocery store ever. I dread going here, it seriously puts me in a bad mood, so I rarely if ever go anymore. If it's somehow managed to start caring about any of it's shoppers over the last month, then my apologies, but I am with the other person in my boycott after the last incident with the never-staffed non-service, service counter. I hate this store. I would stop going but it is the closest, most convenient grocery store to me aside from Harris Teeter but as I hate that store too, this one is my go to. Why do I hate it? They are chronically understaffed for starts. You can go literally any time of day, any day of the week, holiday or no holiday and they will have not enough people on registers to accommodate the flow of customers. They seem to rely heavily on their self checkout systems but the lines for those usually go way back into the cereal aisle because of the backup they cause. I went one day at 6am expecting to get in and out with some donuts. Nope. Played myself. Definitely took 15 minutes to get out because they had one cashier and ALL of the self checkouts were closed. So I was late to work but at least I brought donuts, right? I also hate this store because they never have anything I need. I was able to get only half of my shopping list yesterday because they didn't have arugula, buttermilk, or dog dewormer. I ended up going to my other much hated store, Harris Teeter, for the remaining items. The bathrooms are reminiscent of the Chicago stockyards of the early 20th century and the prices are laughably high for Baltimore City. Avoid if you can, but you probably can't because it is all there is. read more

Negatives: The prices are crazy, the produce section is pretty pathetic and there are never enough checkout lanes open. If you're not there between 8 AM and 2 PM, be prepared to wait at least ten minutes in the checkout line. The lines for the self-checkout lanes are LONGER and sometimes stretch back into the aisles. The cashiers are hit and miss. Sometimes you'll get a pleasant cashier who will carry on a conversation, sometimes they won't even mumble a hello or look you in the eyes. Positives: The store is relatively clean and they have a good selection of baked goods. read more

Every time I go to the Canton Safeway (which isn't often because I never have a good experience there) I'm usually in a hurry. But on days like today, I would have been better off driving to Shoppers because it took me the same amount of time to get out of the Safeway. I thought self-checkout lines were created to expedite the check out process? I was there at 10am on a Monday morning so it wasn't busy but it still took me forever to check out. Apparently, being environmentally correct by bringing your own bags is new to this place. Even with the option to let the machine know you have your own bag doesn't help. Between having my bag somehow rejected, then trying to skip the bagging process altogether, and only purchasing a total of 9 items, the alarm on my machine sounded 3 times. And of course there wasn't an attendant in site - all 3 times. For a store who has competition creeping their way (Harris Teeter & Target - bring it on!) you'd think they'd do something about their service. These can't be the first complaints they've heard about their store. read more

I have had maybe 3 positive experiences here... Over the 6 years I've been shopping here. The service is terrible, there is zero front end management skills in this store. The nicest employees work in produce which is unfortunate since I rarely need to order from or talk to those folks. I only shop here because of the deals on the app and because I know the store layout, but am continuously disappointed in the management and service in the bakery and most cashiers. on Monday around 8 pm, no matter what time, there were only two cashiers open and hundreds of customers waiting. waiting for about 20-30 min on line and the cashier, 15 items or less line, was taking care of some food stamps or something who's cart was FULL and almost every single items, the cashier has to look through the purchased items and called a manager for help. Not only this time, almost every time, there were only one or two lines open and people were working WAY TOO SLOW. NO MORE SAFEWAY!! read more

This Safeway is excellent for anyone in the Canton/Fells Point area. They always have great deals, especially on their meats and yogurt/cheeses section. Their produce is fresh and has been to my liking. The only negative is if coming late at night, there are always too few cashiers and you have to wait for 10+ minutes to check out. read more

I only been here a few times. Prices are high. And as others may have also experienced, TWICE now they have overcharge me for something. Whether something was on sale and they charged me regular price and/or whether the swiped something twice. It takes about 15 minutes to fix the problem. The staff seems incompetent. The prices are high. Giant foods has better prices and I never once has a checkout issue. You need to lower the prices and change out or retrain the staff. Oh and you'd think it's big order and it's normal to screw something up. I had about 5 items and they rung it up with the wrong price and one of the items they scanned twice. Are these people half asleep or something? Why are they even being paid if they can ring up five items correctly. The line wasn't even that busy. read more

I will go out of my way to go to the grocery store in the county by work, or travel to Wegmans or even Shoppers on Eastern Ave. They are always out of several of the items I went there for. The produce is horrible and barely fresh. One of the most annoying things is they are always out of baskets by the front door, so I have to go hunt down my own from a register! The Harris Teeter effect has forced Safeway to make some improvements. The displays aren't as poorly maintained as in the past. That said, Safeay fruits and vegetables are usually about ready to brown over within a day of the time you get them home. Cashiers vary from the rude to the indifferent to the downright weird. My experience has been that prices are roughly the same at Harris Teeter and Safeway, so why put up with the hassles at Safeway. In the few times that I've stopped in recently Safeway has been noticably slower than in the past, and this is richly deserved based on the indifference they've shown to their customers. I give Safeway Canton 4 stars for location: after all it's only a block from home. Otherwise it's a completely average experience with a slightly above average price tag (probably due to the convenience of walking to shop). That's not to say that it's a bad store. The produce is fresh enough, the selection is good enough, the shelves are stocked (except in the rare storm situation in which all toilet paper and bottled water is gone about 10 minutes after doom is declared on the news). But if you need something extra special you'll probably drive a bit farther to whole foods or Harris teeter; we certainly do. As a neighborhood staple, where you can pick up groceries and prescriptions on the fly, I'm totally happy to have this place in the neighborhood. One bonus to note: they do have pretty awesome fresh pizza dough for a DIY home pizza! Try it out sometime. It's on the end cap down by the deli. Good shopping. read more

I give them one star because their bakery is ok and the store does have food. I've stood in line for 25 minutes for dry cleaning only to just take it down the road. It doesn't seem to matter if I'm buying just a pack of gum or an entire cart load of food I know I'll be in line for a solid 20 minutes. It's slow. Doesn't matter day or time only one register will be opened. They rely heavily on self check out which typically has a line going all the way down the isle. It's sad. Thank god for the new Harris Teeter. I wonder what amenity will take over when this Safeway loses its last customer. read more
