The store is - as noted before - chaotic. You can only do self-checkout if you have 20 or fewer items, but you can't discern that easily. The pharmacy is a disaster. A prescription sent on Monday doesn't get filled until 2 or 3 days later. And the staff is SO disorganized, it takes them forever (10 minutes to be precise) to even answer the phone and tell you if a prescription is filled. And when you go to pick it up, it ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS takes a minimum of 10 minutes if there is even 1 person ahead of you. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL attitudes and just organization. Sad. read more

One of the main doors is blocked so people exiting have to squeeze past people entering. All the checkout aisles are blocked with carts to prevent free movement of people. There is one regular cashier and they expect you to "self-checkout." The security guard greets me, and asks me to check my bag. I have a computer in it so I tell him no. He harasses me until I leave the store. I shopped here for 5 years and it has never been a pleasant experience. Overpriced, mediocre quality, long lines, but the overzealous security is the last straw, not shopping here again. The "lady" at the self check out TY is horrible and will threaten to fight you over minuscule issues (probably can't even read that) I know, because it took her three times to read over my transaction that wasn't even complete and was loud and wrong about it. I ordered my birthday cake for a large crowd. The pictured birthday cake is the bakery's work level and talent. There is a crease/line through the picture. The obese African American female worker's attitude matched the work. She had an attitude because I wasn't happy with the work. Who wants a crease through their cake's artwork? The cake was embarrassing, and I will NEVER allow this to happen again. I used to shop here decades ago when professionalism was the goal. The atmosphere has changed for the worse. The aforementioned employee and like personalities are what others have experienced, which makes Giant a not-so-great place to shop. If I could give them a negative number I would, Their pharmacy is horrendous. They never carry the medicines needed you put in prescriptions and retrieve them in one or two days they're still not ready you'll have to wait. They don't have good customer service skills at all in addition to being unorganized (I was told they were working on my prescription so I returned a hour later to be told the medicine had to be ordered). The medicine was for a child (they were aware of this fact) but instead of originally telling me the situation you had me return twice don't waste your time go somewhere else. read more

Not in the best of neighborhoods but definitely the best of customer service displayed. Fresh hot bar, fresh salad bar, clean spacious aisles, speedy self check out registers and parking lot w plenty of spaces. I'll definitely continue to shop here when nearby. read more

I live nearby and it's covenant, have everything I want and good fresh fruit. It's expensive which to be expected in this current economy, but all in all it's cool. The only issue I have it that they don't aisle well label, so I'm always wondering around like Spinal tap backstage. Also there is always a homeless person just randomly just yelling or ranting, but they bother no one. Shop here mind you business and you will be fine. read more

Our pandemic-tinted trip to the store today exceeded my expectations. First, they did have a wait line with spaces marked outside to keep the store from getting packed, and one way aisles inside. Miss Doris checked us out and had the kindest disposition, both with us and with her associates. I've never had such a neighborhood market experience from a chain grocer. read more

There's no doubt about it, ladies and gentlemen - this is a sketch area. I used to live here as a teenager and I know for a fact that it's sketch - it was then and it is now. However, this store does try to make it as pleasant as possible to go grocery shopping and get your business done. The prices are about right for Giant, and the quality of the food/items is actually pretty decent - this location might be in a bad area, but the upkeep of the store itself is just fine. Nice and clean, with good, fresh produce and meat. This store is on the way home from my gym, so we often stop in here and pick up staples. But, yeah, I agree with the reviewer saying that you should avoid this area at night if at all possible. The last time we were here (about 9pm or so), there were some pretty scary-looking characters in line behind us giving us the evil eye - I don't know if it was how we looked or what, but I won't lie, I was kind of nervous. (And I was born and raised in Baltimore City - I don't get nervous over ANYTHING.) I probably wouldn't recommend this place if you're at all scared of driving in city neighborhoods - you'll run for the hills immediately. But I can't totally dismiss this place, either, because it IS clean and the product is quality. It's not their fault their neighborhood sucks. read more

Lazy, unresponsive pharmacy staff. When you complain they act even worse. It takes them DAYS to fill a rx! 4-5 Days to fill basic blood pressure medication! They send a text message to let you know that your rx is ready for pick-up that says you can get curbside delivery if you call the pharmacy. But when you call, they either let it ring for about 8-10 minutes, then hang up on you or your cut off as soon as the call is transferred. I then asked to speak to the manager. She went to the pharmacy and got them on the phone. And of course the pharm staff person who answered the phone had a stank attitude. Like, how dare I want her to do her d*mn job. And she hung up in my ear. WORST PHARMACY SERVICE EVER!! read more

If you are fine with the neighborhood, then this Giant is great. Its clean, and the staff are friendly. The only thing that bothered me is the surrounding area. Waverly is not a very friendly-looking area, especially at night. The store remains open till midnight, but I suggest you go there earlier. This store is extremely frustrating. Forget the fact that there are just random dudes sitting outside all day asking you for money or food. No what's worse is the self check out lane where they have a sign that says 12 items or fewer but instead allow people to go through with full shopping carts. General: Some decent finds, but understaffed (some lovely employees, some just fine and helpful, some mediocre wastes who don't seem to be earning their pay), lacking quality in their fresh items, and the single longest wait time I've ever had for check out in any grocery store across the globe (and we're talking worse than the Pathmark on 125th Street in Harlem a couple days before a holiday). Specific: - Such piss poor produce that I had to alter recipe ingredients to match what little quality I could find - Equal (read: more expensive) pricing on many pre-packaged/chopped items and bulk items (isn't the point to save money if you're going to do the prep work yourself?) - Aisle and refrigerator spills not cleaned up (likely due to the under-staffing) - Over half an hour wait in line during a slow period - Customers allowed to openly drink alcohol in line (while already well beyond a state of acceptable public intoxication), throw food waste into other aisles, go behind registers to take paper towels to clean themselves off, and then have employees tell other customers "Oh, him! He's a regular. He's a really nice guy." - The entire time that drunk jazz was going on, the security dude was spitting distance from it all, on his cell phone texting...then looked up to witness what was going on, walked outside, and came back in five minutes later to converse and laugh with the drunk dude! - Cashier did not cleanse the conveyor belt after raw and cooked seafood juices have been splattered on it and before other customer's fresh groceries are put upon it. After a bit more than a year of shopping at this Giant, my perception of this store has not improved a bit. Surprisingly, I'm fine with the "sketchiness" of the area; it isn't a major factor for me. Living in Charles Village without a car, I have a limited selection of affordable grocery stores I can visit, so I can get over the fact that the area around Giant isn't ideal. However what I can't get over is the fact that time and time again, I'm faced with Giant's inferior produce. The quality of fruit, for the most part, has been totally fine and up to par, but it's a different story with the vegetables. The packaged romaine hearts always disappoint; right out of the package, most of the stalks are not only wilted but soft and mushy, and the bases have that reddish tinge around the edge...ew. The herbs have been out for who knows how long; they're sad and wilted, and more importantly, don't even smell like herbs! These are just two specific reoccurring disappointments; overall when I'm shopping in the produce section, I'm consistently disappointed and even a little disgusted by the quality of the produce. Even just at a brief glance, so little looks fresh and appealing in that perky way that quality produce should have. In addition, the price (although not excessively high in general) doesn't justify the subpar quality. Though some weeks are better than others, a good (or even average) grocery store should have consistently fresh produce available, week by week. The rest of the store has served my purposes well; baked goods, dairy, pretty much everything else. The store is clean, and the staff (that I've encountered) are very friendly. The lines do take forever, even self-checkout (where the machines are compelled to *loudly* announce every single step along the way). So will I keep going to this Giant? Yup. Do I have much of a choice? Nope. Am I tired of mushy lettuce? Oh hell yes. read more

I was at the 33rd location not to long ago and the pharmacist was very rude to me as I was trying to pick up my prescriptions, the pharmacy manger was also a witness to what the new young lady was saying to me and she also said nothing, I contacted the supervisor on duty (kim) and she did apologize but this isn't the first time the same young lady has been very rude to me and I have observed her being rude to other customers as well, she doesn't seem like she likes her job, and if she doesn't then she shouldn't work in customer service I was very offended by her comments to me, I did tell her that young women need to be more professional when working with the public and she proceeded to say old women need to be more professional, and I will be looking for somewhere else to have my prescriptions filled, I called back to the 33rd location and asked for the young ladies name I was placed on hold and no one ever answered me or connected me to the pharmacy. read more

This store has been problematic from first opening. The issue in the beginning, which still remains, is overcharging for items, which many, probably, don't notice. I was visiting customer service and the manager, at least, every 2-3 shopping trips for pricing problems. They used to give you free items, when they made errors, but ended that practice, most likely, because they were losing too many profits, due to sloppy computer input. Now, you only get your money back, and that's if you catch the errors, and don't mind making repeated trips to get your money refunded. The produce section is a real mess. Not only is some of it terrible looking and old and wouldn't be fed to a rabbit (even the over-priced organic, when you can find it often looks bad), but entire sections have no price labeling, repeatedly. Try finding someone to help you get the prices for the items. No price labeling happens in other areas, too. I have found numerous items, throughout the store, that are expired, some up to a year past the expiration date--many are edibles or are supposed to be. The restrooms are often disgusting! It is difficult to find assistance, and when you do, they either give you wrong information or don't know the answer. Frequently, not enough of the registers are opened, so the lines are too long. I had problems with one of the pharmacists, in the past, so I switched to another pharmacy. He was, extremely rude, multiple times. In one instance, another customer said that she couldn't believe how he talked to me. Another one said that was why she switched to another store. The sad thing is that, previously, they had a couple of really good pharmacists who were very pleasant, and I received a great deal of advice and assistance, but they were transferred, and my great experience turned really bad. I even complained to the regional pharmacy manager, who basically ignored my complaints. I could, probably, think of other problems, but this gives a general idea of the need for major improvement. Of course, the area is not great, as mentioned by others, but that is secondary to the store problems. I will continue to shop here because it is convenient, and due to health issues, I can't travel far but am not happy about it. I know of other people, however, who have stopped shopping here for many of the reasons that I have mentioned. I gave the 2 stars because a few of the customer service employees are very helpful and nice, including one of the female managers, and there are some other nice employees in the store, but that should be the rule, anyway. read more

I'm just wondering-with all these negative reviews why nothing has been done to address them. I concur with all of the concerns and it seems inconceivable that the corporate office hasn't made arrangements to rectify, or at least address the many concerns. One suggestion would be that the "powers that be" close the store one morning/afternoon/evening to hold a town hall meeting for the community to come and talk with them and try to come up with a solution to the many problems that plague the Waverly Giant. I refuse to believe that Giant as a corporation does not care about its patrons and would not do everything in its power to bring this to a win-win situation. It is just not good business sense to to seemingly ignore the same complaints over and over. There is a consensus among shoppers that should be taken seriously. As a community resident, I would attend such a meeting if Giant would set it up. I don't like to present a problem unless I also have a solution. This was my first visit to Waverly and I was very impressed. It is incomprehensible why others have rated this store so "average." It was well lit, clean, well stocked, spacious, and the staff are all user friendly. The produce and meats were fresh and well displayed. We are not discussing the neighborhood. I went shopping there today and after 1 hour of filling my grocery cart with items, I turned around and the cart (including my canvas bags) was gone. I notified security that someone stole my cart including my canvas bags. The security person then looked through the tape, said he saw me grab an item from the shelf but couldn't tell which cart was mine (the only one in the aisle at the time and a mere 3 feet from me) or who took my cart. The shopping cart was later discovered by my husband, who drove there to help me, outside of the bathrooms against a wall which hid it from plain sight. It was apparent that some thief grabbed my cart while my back was turned in order to go through my canvas bags in an attempt to steal anything of value from within them. Although I have shopped at this store since it opened, I will never return to this store. The customer service in this store was never good to begin within and has only gone increasingly downhill over the past 2 years. And apparently in order to shop there you need to bring a friend, spouse, or family member to watch over your cart and personal belongings every time you turn your back to grab another item off of the shelf. read more
