I am a transplant back to Baltimore, and the Safeway in Charles Village has consistently been one of the most positive parts of my routine. The staff is always kind and hardworking, but today I want to specifically recognize an employee named Baron. I have watched Baron work over the years. He is almost always by himself, quietly focused, working hard, and never drawing attention to himself. He is the kind of employee who just gets the job done. Because of how focused he always is, I honestly expected that when I asked for help today, he might say no--and I would have completely understood. This morning around 8:00 a.m., I was shopping for white grapes for a patient I care for. She is not able to get around easily, and one of her simple joys is having white grapes when I come back from the store. There were none available on the floor, and Baron was in the middle of unloading and checking in what looked like a very large shipment--many packages, clearly a lot of work. Without hesitation, Baron said yes. He went all the way to the back, unpacked multiple boxes, and by the time I returned, he had gone through them and pulled the white grapes from the bottom of a box--specifically to make sure I could take them for her. I was incredibly grateful, but more importantly, the woman I care for was absolutely thrilled. What Baron did may seem small to some, but it meant everything to her--and it meant a lot to me to see that level of care and consideration. Safeway Charles Village is fortunate to have someone like Baron. His quiet dedication, work ethic, and kindness truly stood out today. I came here for a quick lunch and wish I went somewhere else after picking my food choices. For less than 10 dollars I got a breast and a wing, which is all they had at the time, with potato wedges and macaroni and cheese as my sides. I was told I can wait another 10 minutes for thighs and legs. There were only 2 people at the counter was each were serving only either hot food or the deli. I did discover they were short staffed due to a call out. Service was slow. I did appreciate the lady that waited on me by changing her gloves but they should have tongs for the chicken. I was not to thrilled with how much she scooped the macaroni and cheese, she barely filled the container. The meal was close to 10 dollars. By the time I returned to my office which is down the street and sat down to eat I found the food to be luke warm. After taking a couple of bites, the macaroni and cheese reminded me of KFC's macaroni and cheese, not my fav. The chicken was ok and the wing was on the small side. I am not too familiar with this area but, I stopped in to purchase some stamps to mail a few important letters off. Upon walking to the grocery store I noticed how trashy the parking lot is with overgrown weeds and brushes directly in front of the store. I used to work at Safeway as a teenager so I will always remember the standard of appearance and greeting customers and thanking them by name. I noticed security at the door and most of the items like detergent, deodorant and soaps along with other items locked up. The parking lot is a reflection of the store before entering and this was not a good reflection at all and truly unacceptable from a former employee. read more

This review is for the online shopping, as the in store experience has been good. I was a long time costumer of the online shopping until they mess my last order. More than half of the order were not delivered for a total of $53. Additionally I received items that I did not order, some with a sticker with my name and order number, which tells that the mixup was in dispatch. The driver was very supportive and even double check that nothing was missing in the car. I placed a refund request that was denied without reason and after escalation to the different levels up to headquarters, the refund request was still denied. If you choose to shop online with this company, do not trust their refund policy, take pictures of everything delivered in case you need to place a formal complaint with the State Consumer Protection Office. It was the only time I have this bad experience with the company but enough to move my online shopping elsewhere. read more

Ok so; this is the closest large grocery store to me. That said; I primarily shop at another grocery store further away because of the issues with this one. Let's get started: 1. Items are constantly mislabeled for their price - just this past week some spinach labeled as approximately $2.5 ringed up at $5! I know this might not seem like a lot, but as a grad student on a budget this is + it is challenging to get a price correction after you've paid and frankly, I sometimes don't have the time to do this 2. There are expired food items sitting out for purchase. - I didn't have time to go to my usual shop one day when I ran out of almond milk so I popped over here for a quick pick up, only to discover while at checkout!! that the milk had expired TWO WEEKS prior to the date!! I could not believe my eyes and I just don't think the employees here are paying attention to expiration dates which is just such a hazard?? 3. Prices are incredibly expensive here - A single box of cereal that I was vaguely interested in buying to replace my usual go to (Cheerios) was listed as a whooping $7!!! This store is pure trash. From the store, being dirty to it never having anything on the shelves. Like how can you be out of a complete meat section of ground beef(for example). the employees look miserable. The deli department is disgusting. The floor on the self checkout line hasn't been swept or mopped in forever one of the people that work in the deli department wear a bonnet and walk around with a shopping cart all the male manager does is gossip with his employees. I love this place and shop here about 3x/week. Sometimes there are lines and sometimes there are no carts. Sometimes there's a crazy person and sometimes it smells a little funky. But they have what I need and I almost always see or hear something funny while I'm there. 5 stars! read more

Produce is frequently rotten on the shelves, customer service is horrible to nonexistent, store is dirty, employee attitudes are the worst, staff the store properly and open up some checkout lines, hire security that stops theft so there are baskets and carts available for shoppers. Move the people aggressively asking for money away from the front doors. In short, treat your store like a quality grocery like your stores in other neighborhoods in and near the city. Regrettably I am unable to travel very far, so I go to my nearest grocery store. Unfortunately, my closest grocery store is the Safeway on Boston Street in the Canton area of Baltimore. While their selection and variety of goods are fine; their prices and particularly their customer service go without appreciation. While I can understand that a number of forces can affect prices, I do not understand why they would retain individuals who are not fit to serve the public. They even indulge one (known) employee that is allowed to choose which customers she is willing to serve. I've had several occasions in which I had to wait in line while the attending cashier sought another employee to wait on me. This not only caused me an unnecessary delay, but also the unfortunate people behind me in line. I've heard people call her Tonya. Apparently, she is a longtime employee there. I've made a number of complaints to management about her, but that hasn't affected any change. I would be remiss not to acknowledge that there are several very good employees there. Yet; as the saying goes, "It Only Takes A few Bad Apples." If you go to that store you would be better off asking another customer for help. After that, use the self-check out scanners. Try anything not to brush against employees who treat as an annoyance. read more

This place used to be a lot worse but after a badly-needed renovation is now fairly ok. It's in a pretty tough area and gets a lot of unsavory customers (I've definitely seen someone arrested here presumably for shoplifting more than once) but is usually well-stocked with all the standard stuff and a good amount of variety. Their organic selection is much better than Streets in downtown and the prices are pretty reasonable. Customer service is so-so but most of the time unnecessary for me. Pharmacy is slow but gets the job done - I've gotten several vaccines here (Covid, flu, and some for international travel) and never had an issue. The 10% off coupons for groceries when you get a vaccine is a big reason I keep coming back. Overall this neighborhood is lucky to have a fairly decent grocery store, the likes of which is nonexistent in other run-down areas of Baltimore (the west side in particular). I hope this store stays in business because the community really needs it. read more

This was my first time here. I was at first hesitant because there were several really sketchy characters in the parking lot. Inside, though, the store was well-lit and organized. It seemed like everything was on sale -- there were so many sale labels! Everything I had on my grocery list was available and I was in and out pretty quickly. I would market there more often, but I have to come across Druid Park Lake Drive, which is a mess with just one lane, use to be two lanes. I will give this place 2 stars because it is in a convenient location and they sell food. The service is the worst in the business, prepare for attitude just for...idk checking out? Seriously, every time I choose to go through a line with a cashier I am made to feel like I have done something wrong to them, even if the only words I say are, "Hi, how are you today?" So now, I just wait in the mile long self-checkout line with all the other people that know the deal and don't want to guilt you feel about buying groceries and standing in a line with a cashier. Check expiration dates on your items, even if it is something like a box of pasta - because I routinely make purchases that are way past the date of expiration. They are always out of produce. I went here on yesterday. Stopped in after work to use a few coupons. The store seemed to be pretty neat in organized. My only disappointment was in the available selection of seedless grapes. They were horrible. The presentation I saw they should not even have had the selection sitting up there. But, on to better things, I did find just about everything that I was looking for and the cashier was friendly and gave me no problems at all. It was a very pleasant experience. Yesterday May 19, 2017 at approximately 6p I went to the Safeway on E 25th st to purchase steam shrimp and crab legs. The young man behind the seafood counter advised he is not able to steam my items because he has other pre packaged items that need to be steamed. I asked him should I come back at a later time or return the next day. He wasn't able to give me a clear concise answer so I decided to walk away. As I was walking away the man behind the counter started using obscene language about me towards a customer. "I don't know why that bitch has so much attitude." As I was walking back towards the counter the seafood/meat supervisor was walking up as well. Instead of trying to diffuse the situation. The supervisor tried to "shoo" me away and ask me if there's anything else while trying to help a new customer. THEEE WORST CUSTOMER I EVER RECEIVED AT A SAFEWAY. YOU NEED TO HIRE EMPLOYEES THAT ARE ABLE TO ARTICULATE THEIR WORDS INSTEAD OF USING OBSCENE LANGUAGE TO THEIR CUSTOMERS. Very poor customer service with staff that seem either disinterested, overwhelmed, or both. I place the majority of the blame on the business model and not the individuals. I do think the staff could be better but it's hard to blame them when they are clearly understaffed and undertrained. It appears as a typical corporate retail practice - try to maximize profits at the expense of good service to their customers. These are the customers who are really only there because they don't have any other convenient options available. Overall, this is a horrible model for a grocery service and the people of Baltimore deserve better. If you have the opportunity, I recommend MOM's in Hampden as a significantly better option where you are much less likely to leave with a bad taste in your mouth. read more

The Safeway I have ever visited, the representative at the customer service desk is the worst, his name is Jonathan. The 3 times at this store looking for propane and he automatically would tell me they don't have any. The first time he pretended he went to check to check to see if they had any and left me waiting for 20 minutes, no kidding. Twice now I've been to this Safeway wherein they had ONE register open serving the entire store at opening. The cashier took a full 4 minutes counting out the stupid Monopoly cards for the customers in front of me that had full carts and when I went through the line with my 6 items I was given nothing but attitude as Delores rang me up with contempt for having the nerve to shop there I guess. If you're in such a bad mood at the beginning of your shift, I'd hate to be there at the end of it. The guy behind me kept yelling for another register to please open as the line stretched all the way down the length of the aisle, but his cries fell on deaf ears. Well, my husband and I have been frequenting this grocery store for about 3 years now. First because it was the closest to where we lived, but now because it's conveniently on our way home from work. The convenience has been the ABSOLUTE ONLY thing that has kept me coming back, but this was the last straw. Let me detail its many flaws for you: 1) This place is slow. Not just it's-busy-during-peak-times slow, but a constant, even during off-peak times bring-a-book-you'll-be-here-a-while slow. So slow that I actually timed myself every time I went there for a month--plan on spending 20 minutes waiting in line to check out. That's the average time I waited over my month-long study (the maximum time I waited, you'll be appalled to know, was 43 minutes). 2) The cashiers think they are God's gift to the world, and will treat you accordingly. God forbid they actually have to stop gabbing to help a customer once in a while...what do you think they're there for!?! 3) I'd be interested to hear the manager's definition of 'fresh'. Finding meat that doesn't look like it's growing a microbiological science project or milk that doesn't expire in 2 days is like a scavenger hunt. 4) Last, but definitely not least, and something that my husband and I just learned--they will tow you. In fact, they seem kind of giddy to do so. It doesn't matter that you were heading to shop in their store, they will happily and giddily watch the tow truck take your car before you even can walk in the door. The shadiest part, though, is as soon as you realize what happened, the 'security' guard is there to help you--by offering his kin's car for a ride at just double what the taxi would cost (I have no doubt about the relationship--they could have been twins if they weren't separated by 20 years). And, if you're wondering, that was a $350 grocery shopping, and I didn't even get around to buying anything at Safeway before I was chasing my car out of the parking lot. This Safeway is in Baltimore near a classic Row House Neighborhood and looks similar to its brethren near Safeway HQ, in California, albeit not as new and nice. It was early in the morning, but they were chipper and cheerful, as we tried to buy some Gift cards. (We had to call MC to clear it. apparently a money laundering preventive test) They do have their own decent sized parking lot, sometimes a real luxury in these city parts. read more

Every time I go to this Safeway the produce is downright pitiful (old/bruised), or they've sold out of all the vegetables. I know it's memorial day but how can you literally run out of entire sections of vegetables?!?! You'd think it was a communist store or something. Running out of things is truly a problem at this store. There's only ever one (maybe two) regular checkout lines open no matter how crowded it gets. I guess they expect most people will check themselves out, but I'm sorry. If I'm paying through the teeth for crappy vegetables, someone else is gonna ring me up. And these cashiers either A) don't know what they're doing or B)Like to chat it up with people instead of paying attention to you or god forbid checking out your groceries. Seriously. Today this one cashier full-on stopped checking us out so she could catch up with an old friend. Like, stood there and had a full-on five minute conversation while we waited (with lots of people in line behind us). It happened at least three times during the check-out with different people popping over to say "hey". When I tried to get her attention to verify the price on something she had just swiped she got upset at me like I was being rude. And this was one of the managers. Unbelievable. The ladies in the Seafood Department are awesome!!! Treat every customer like they were family!!

This is the worst Safeway I've been to, and I've been to many.It's close, there's a nice mural in front- I wanted to like it, we gave it multiple tries, but we'll be going to Giant from now on. The entire place is lit with one 10 watt fluorescent light bulb. The produce is usually bruised or half spoiled. We picked a package of the only brand of corn tortillas they offer. We get home and look more closely- THEY'VE BEEN EXPIRED FOR A MONTH o_0 They never staff the cashiers. At noon on a Saturday they had ONE cashier for the whole store. There were 2 people sitting behind the customer service desk laughing and not helping the one cashier. The self-check out things would tweak out regularly or break. Once we were there, the beleaguered cashier called for assistance overhead 3 times(!) and no one came. There were three other staff members standing by the door cracking up, not offering to lift a finger. Now once you make it to the cashier, they're usually very nice, but SLOOWWW as molasses. And should you ever need to use the restroom..........it'd be better to just go in your pants. You can't unsee what I saw in that bathroom. read more

The only reason I keep going back is because it's so close. Horrible, horrible employees. On several occasions I've been in line (express lane) for more than 25 minutes only to find when I finally get tot he front that the cashier is either on a personal call or can't figure out how to ring up an EBT card. Staff doesn't give a f*** and it shows. Store is commonly in disarray, 3 lanes open at rush times, no carts or baskets at entrance, just bad. At least they are installing self-checkout machines so you won't have to deal with them soon, but I fully expect them to be is disrepair shortly due tot he base clientelle that frequents this store. Catering to the new influx of students and yuppies in the neighborhood is good, but the majority of the customers are bag-ladies ghetto-dwellers and the odd homeless fragrance salesman. If you can get in and get out quickly it's not a bad store, otherwise avoid it. read more

It's always been clean and the employees always nice. Honestly, I've gotten more crap from other customers than anything else. It's a mix between college kids, hipsters, home owners and neighborhood people. It's the only large grocery store in like a two/three mile radius so it's home to a lot of people. To avoid long lines, don't go after work or Sunday evenings. Produce is always fresh and I like the seafood selection better than my old Safeway in Owings Mills. It's fresher. And they are slowly but surely increasing their selection of diverse foods. read more

They need better staff in the bakery department, the woman I spoke to was very rude , all I wanted was a pack of keiser rolls that wasnt burnt..) they were 'dark' burnt, but I was told that the roll are dark when they are 'fresh' and 'light' when they are not. ANOTHER THING I noticed on several visits was that Spoilt and expired meats are in the freezer...some were even labeled at 20% off discount...REALLY! Fish ain't free so when I purchase a few filets I need them to be laid out and wrapped proper. My request for treatment of items I would be purchasing and consuming was met with push back, as if my request to not have my fish savagely BUNDLED together in a ball in a bag was ME being uncivilized... nah son, I'll be still getting my fresh fish from whole foods where they know to gently handle delicate flesh like that of these expensive af fresh caught fish I'm paying for!
