I only go to this location because it is close by my apartment. But if I could have a choice of supermarkets I would do all my shopping at whole foods or some place else. But safeway serves it's purpose. The staff is pretty much ghetto as hell. There are a few cashiers that are nice and go the extra mile and these are the older ones. The younger girls are just hood and they are there to collect a paycheck. I am so glad that they got a new barista at the Starbucks counter who is very pleasant. Because the other girls they had were just disgruntled with life and was made that I came to the counter to order a drink. I enjoy this location even though it's a little pricey. The produce and fruit are always extremely fresh and the store is clean and welcoming! I don't normally need much assistance and the associates don't always seem pleasant however I have little interactions with them! The lines are sometimes long but they move fast! I give it one star because they do, technically, sell food. At the busiest times of the day (before work, after work, weekends), they have the fewest number of staff members working. One register open only, at all times. Many (NOT ALL) staff members are rude, un-engaged, and do not know the store, the products offered, or where to find them. Yesterday after work I stood in line for 30 minutes to buy a bag of cat food. This is a constant problem. I walked out and mentioned to the security guard, "I wish you all could open more than one register at the busiest times of the day," and he said "Not at this place. Will never happen." The fresh food is often spoiled or bad to begin with. They've been receiving this sort of feedback for years and have done nothing to remedy the situation. This is because they know they don't have to. They're located in an up and coming neighborhood and are the only game in town for a few blocks in either direction (unless you want to go to Save-a-lot) so they have a tiny monopoly and can afford to understaff the store, understock the shelves, and underserve every customer. If you visit the Safeway in Canton, or any Safeway in a Baltimore suburb, you will notice an ENORMOUS difference in the cleanliness of the store, the number of employees, the quality of the food, and the quality of service. It is no surprise that this store takes advantage of operating out of a low-income neighborhood and feels it can treat its customers like trash. It's no different than many, many other Baltimore businesses. The Giant in Barclay is a much better place to shop. Better prices, friendly staff and better quality food. This Safeway is garbage. read more

This Safeway is the most horrendous grocery store. I live nearby so sometimes walk over if I need only one thing, but avoid it at most costs. Oftentimes basic kitchen staples are missing from the shelves (eg: butter, eggs, milk, etc!). Their store-baked french bread is always underbaked, once to the point that I found raw dough inside. The clerks are almost purposefully unhelpful. The store's entire refrigeration system broke about a month ago and all their refrigerated foods went to spoil away, with no care to donate the food to a food bank or whatever before it went rotten. The only shining star of the entire place is the hispanic produce clerk who is always helpful, friendly and knowledgable. read more

This is one of the worst grocery stores I've ever visited more than once. If there were another option close by I would never go there again. Tonight only two check out lines were open in addition to the self serve. ALL stretched 50 feet long. The store is constantly out of products. I went to buy some French bread and they were hard as rocks. The produce often looks like it's been through some kind of wilting machine. For someone who live in Mt. Vernon this is the one of a limited grocery shopping options nearby. They have good sales (get a safeway card) but be sure to check fruits and veggies for freshness. Also, keep an eye on expiration dates on yogurt, cheese and milk etc. read more

I came in looking for specific product that unfortunately they did not have. However the store manager Joe was incredibly polite and helpful! He even treated my son to an oatmeal raisin cookie from their bakery which was absolutely delicious!! Definitely my favorite Safeway to come to! read more

This location is near my work place. I bought stale fruit and salads, which is unfortunate. They offer a great lunch special, $7.99 for a deli sandwich on premium bread, soup, and a salad. The price is exceptional for the area. However, when I checked out I had to encounter individuals who claimed that did not call CPS, since "If your children were removed, my children would have been removed, after accepting vacation offers to Miami via cell phone." I was waiting in line with my DHR badge, only to encounter individuals waiting to check out in line to receive calls from individuals from those standing in line behind me. I rapidly removed my DHR badge and ran to my car. read more

Unfortunately this is our best option close to home... However the lines are always long. Produce always seems to be just about to expire and bread selection most days is horrible in the bakery. One of the worst grocery stores. Some of the food items are old and many times the vegetables do not last for more than one or two days. Once in their Brussels sprouts, I found tiny little worms. Since I went late in the night, I couldn't take it and return it back. Next day will be too late and they will blame you for maligning them, as they did to me at the Save-a-Lot store once. Hence never reported this to them. The service is very bad, and takes a very long time to get through the line, to get to the cashier. The self service line too takes forever. Some times it is not worth standing in line for 20 minutes, to buy a few crappy things. Better to shell out a few more dollars and go to MOM's in the Rotunda. You get better things, and you will not be wasting time. read more

A real supermarket in a semi-ghetto area..."transistional" is a good term, as it's close enough to good areas to be safe during daylight, but I sure wouldn't want to be here late at night..(well, unarmed). Store is clean, brightly lit, it's a standard-issue big-chain supermarket, nicely stocked and kept up. It's on the smaller side, and it's geared toward yuppies-- not much for wee kiddies/infants, (when we had wee babies, and I had to run for formie, their selection was LIMITED and sucky), (which is odd given they are so close to ghetto-- geuss they didn't want to process too much WIC)...produce is OK- but check it out first, I don't think alot of their fresh stuff moves quickly. Don't go there at first of month-- Food stamps come out then, and you can be stuck in a nasty line! Price aren't particularly cheap, either. It's fine for a run-out for some odd items on a lunch break, and their lunch items aren't bad-- just really check their freshness- I've accidently purchased a salad there that was a day past its sticker, and it had wilty lettuce...otherwise, it would have been a pretty decent meal. It's good to have in the area, esp. for quick errand runs, and it serves its purpose as long as you're careful w/ checking freshness. It has its ghetto elements to be sure, I've listened to people complaining in line about DSS taking their kids away and baby daddies needing to buy diapers, but I've never felt unsafe, and I viewed that as an interesting slice of life...... read more

I come here too often and always disappointed. I come here for lunch and the hot sandwiches are delicious. The salad bar used to be full of wonderful ingredients but now, it's a storage cooler on one side and the other is a sorry excuse for a salad bar. Their "fresh fruit" is always spoiled rotten, they are very expensive, the milks expire too soon, and the security is creepy! HE does nothing effective but talk on his ear piece so if you didn't already know he was using it, you'd be creeped out like myself. read more

This may be the biggest cesspool of a grocery store, ever. I work around the corner and had never gone in there until yesterday. I realized when I got to work that I had left my reading glasses at home, so I decided to zip over to Safeway and grab another pair. The parking lot was shady, but I went in anyway. I asked a cashier where I could find a pair of reading glasses and this seemed to be too difficult of a question for her. I walked to the back near the pharmacy and could not find any. An employee passing by said that they didn't carry them. What large chain of supermarkets doesn't carry reading glasses? You can get them ANYWHERE. (Not here, though). The store was filthy, the items over priced and the staff (At least the 2 that I spoke to) were not bright and rude. I will never go there again-the Giant on 33rd down the road is MUCH nicer. read more

Every time I go to Safeway ...I usually use the self check out . It's this lady name Delores that's always there with the nastiest attitude. One day I needed help and she thought it was more important to talk to her co worker about drama then to assist me . I stood there for longer then need to . I live directly across the street from this Safeway. I didn't have a car for a couple of years so naturally I shopped here frequently because of the convenience factor. Believe me when I tell you that the convenient location was the one and ONLY reason I ever shopped here. They are constantly out of things, the prices are way too high, they are chronically understaffed and the employees and management are incredibly rude. I have had some good experiences with a couple of check out people but most of the time they can't be bothered with you. The worst one is the manager, Ms. Kim. She is hateful and condescending to customers and employees alike but will not hesitate to praise Jesus to anyone who will listen. No wonder the employees are indifferent. What can you expect when they are being treated like crap by this monster on a daily basis? Customer service here is TERRIBLE. On my last encounter, I stood at the "customer service" desk, which had 4 employees standing behind it, and waited for assistance for at least ten minutes while one of the employees helped the man in front of me and the others compared tattoos. Personally, I do love a good tattoo, but this particular display had me less than thrilled. No "hello," or "we'll be right with you..." nothing. In fact, while I was waiting, another employee walked up to join the conversation. I was effectively ignored by 5 people at once! Way to make a customer feel welcomed... So yeah, I would trade the tramp stamp display for some extra service any day. I will bear the crowds and increased prices to shop in the Canton store- thank you very much! read more

It's 6 pm on a weekday. Once again, six out of eight registers at Safeway are unmanned. Some have never been used in over a decade. Safeway entered Charles Village over twenty years ago with no small celebration. It was a time when the area was a food desert. Now there are a few more options for grocery shopping. The demographic of the customer has changed but the management of this Safeway has gone from bad to worse. The staff has always been friendly, patient, and sympathetic to the customers. Some have become like family. So what's the deal with the lines? My presumption is that the upper levels of regional management still do not see Charles Village (or Baltimore City for that matter) as a worthwhile zone for quality investment. It is not Columbia and its not Towson! Consequently, we get the allocation of resources appropriate to their perception of our purchasing strength. So, we have ridiculous waiting in two lines, each extending back a full aisle. The music is clear, "Attention Service Desk, 200!" resonating in the background. I think its time to head to Giant. This is no longer a desert. read more

The checkout people are nice, but the lines are usually long, the result of a number of broken registers. Rumour has it that the store will be renovated sometime in 2006. read more

It must have been a $h¡+hole. However I've been shopping there for over 2 years and I've found the employees helpful. When I ordered food for a party from the deli she was polite and actually made recommendations that paid off. When I went back to pick up my order, there was a different person and they were still helpful and even apologetic for my short wait. Before the beginning of the year my complaint would have been about them not carrying brown eggs; now they do carry free-range organic omega-3 brown eggs. No more splitting the grocery trip between them and whole foods. My biggest kudos to them is for the tea/coffee aisle endless. OMG please try the NUMI organic Maté Lemon Myrtle Green tea. It was listed as $6.99/box but rung up at $3/box last week so I got 4 boxes. read more

The reason why I am giving this store 2 stars and not 1 is because the pharmacists at this place have always been courteous and professional. If the rest of Safeway treated their customers like the pharmacy does, this place would get a lot of stars. The place is always dark, the workers always look at you like they would be thrilled if a sinkhole appeared in front of you and made you vanish. They have high prices on produce while the quality of the produce is questionable at best. I have seen many items past their expiration date and departments rarely rotate their products like they should be done. Expect every 2nd or 3rd person in line to have some problem, complaint, or even sometimes not enough money for their groceries which ties up registers for a very long time. With the 32nd street farmer's market in the same general vicinity go there instead. read more

I hate grocery shopping here. The people who work here aren't friendly. They are very slow. Something is ALWAYS broken. Today the lights kept flickering and the self checkouts are always out of order or the registers go down. The fruit selection is THE WORST out of every grocery store within 15 minutes even worse than Aldi or Shop Rite! (It's that bad) I only come here if it's an emergency. Last Monday I went in 9:45 AM. 1 register open and NO AUTO CHECKOUTS... People lined up about 10 deep. I put the $20 worth of flowers down and LEFT! Tonight I just went there again, it was busy and a lot of checkouts were open, The inept express checkout let a WIC and FOOD STAMP costumer in with WAY OVER THE 15 ITEMS...she had about 35 with the WIC COUPONS AND INDEPENDENCE CARD. I FINALLY AFTER 10 MINUMTES THREW THE STUFF DOWN DROPPED THE F BOMB AND LEFT! When will this SAFEWAY treat it's costumers right. It's not a very good costumer service store. I hate going there, and no time is ever good. I don't know how many times I've just walked out putting my potential purchases down and going somewhere else. STAY away from their seafood department. They do not manage their seafood properly. Raw shrimp is supposed to be gray with no trace of the pinkish orange at all. My husband came home with shrimp which looked very suspect but I grilled it anyway. The chemical smell, which I at first attributed to grilling, was actually the ammoniatic smell that lets you know that somewhere along the way they let the shrimp thaw improperly and thus decompose. I haven't bought seafood from them for years because they manage the department very poorly and I am sorry I didn't take it back after opening it up. read more

If you are in anyway mobile, avoid this place like on open sewer. It has a great location, but is chronically understaffed at peak shopping hours, like Sunday afternoons and weekday evenings. They will pretty much always have one single lane open, so if you're over the 15 items for self-checkout you can wait up to an hour to checkout. Seriously, the lines will reach the back of the store. It is a decent store with some sort of gaping black hole around actually having enough people to run a store. read more

I feel like Safeway is the Comcast of grocery stores. This place sells rotted fruit and past due meat. Surprisingly the vegetables stay relatively fresh although the selection overall is limited. You have to really be careful when you're there to inspect everything you buy thoroughly. This place is also painstakingly slow. I usually only go there to pick up an item here or there. Some stuff is overpriced but they occasionally have good sales. Do any major shopping elsewhere. Seriously, I once spent 25 minutes in a "short" line. read more

I have been reluctantly shopping at this grocery store for about 6 years as it has always been my closest option. Some quick observations: 1. Overpriced: This place appears to jack up their prices due to the high number of SNAP customers they serve. Many staples and "premium" items are 2x as expensive here as they are at Walmart. If you are paying full price you are really going to be feeling the pain at this place. They do have a gas rewards program but there are no close gas stations at which to use your points. 2. Awful selection of produce that is usually on the edge of bad: fruit flies are a common sight around the rotting fruit in the produce section. Also, do you want a zucchini? Too bad. They won't have those til January. Oh, but if you want a daikon radish they always have plenty of them. I surmise that this Safeway is the last stop on the Safeway delivery truck route and whatever is left over gets left here. Also - This place refrigerates garlic and shallots for some reason, too. Why??? 3. Expired food: This place does not do a great job of rotating the stock out when it expires. 4. Seafood: It always looks bad. The "fresh" shrimp are often red. 5. Slow lines: This place always seems to have a long line at the registers. I have never seen more than four of the 10 or so registers open at one time (Even the week before a holiday). Employees always seem to be under stress and being called to the front for register coverage. 6. Broken eggs: seriously, do these people make a point to drop every crate of eggs on the floor before they put them on the shelf? read more

The pharmacy is great. I have very bad luck with pharmacists treating me like I'm not fit to lick their shoes, let alone fill prescriptions, but the customer service at this location is tops. I'll be getting all my prescriptions filled here from now on. read more

While I frequently shopped here before last week, I won't again if I can help it. I shopped here every week. I mean, chatted with the checkers, knew where everything was, etc. So last week I park in their lot, planning to drop some papers off around the corner at a friend's office, then do my shopping. I come back after 20-25 min. and my car's gone. Turns out it's been towed by Safeway's tow-truck company. I go in to take this up with the management after calling the towers and being told that I now owe them only $280 if I pick the car up that day. After waiting 15 minutes, the manager finds time for me and tells me that since I walked off the lot, there's nothing he can do. I tell him that from my inital read of the signs, which say you have 2 hours to park there before being towed, I wasn't aware of that rule, and that since I'm standing here now, half an hour after parking, this is B.S. After arguing with me a bit more, the manager says he'll "see what he can do," and calls the towers. I'm convinced this happened only because I'm reaching for the "contact Safeway corporate headquarters with complaints about this branch" forms they have on the desk. He comes back and tells me that since he recognizes me as a regular, he got them to reduce the fine to $140. Long story short, I had to drive all the way out to the county, to some trailer-office in a lot overgrown by weeds and smelling like piss, just to retrieve my car. This Safeway's got some sketchy scam going on with the tow-truck company. Don't park here, or you risk having to pay through the nose. read more
