We had to hit the Radio Shack for an HDMI cable, so we decided to pick up a couple of things for my mother along the way. Enter the Canton Safeway. Although LoML and I didn't have a bad experience here, I can definitely see the merit in a lot of the complaints I've read; the prices are, indeed, outrageous compared to other places we've been. We don't make it a habit to patronize Safeway in the first place - we usually go to Shoppers or our latest discovery, Redners Warehouse (which is a thousand times cheaper) - if we want higher end things we go to Wegmans in Hunt Valley. But for a quick, "hey, we need staples" shopping trip, this was just fine. The lighting was a bit dark - I was actually a bit surprised by how bleak it looked nearby the deli counters - and the layout is just plain weird. I can usually get through a supermarket quickly - not so here, it took me 45 minutes to find 15 items. I couldn't find coffee for the longest time, only to see that it's stocked with the bread. In a word - huh? How much sense does that make? I could see it in the breakfast aisle, but ... with the bread? This place was insane on a Wednesday evening. LOTS of tired hipsters with kids. Ugh, ugh, ugh, ugh, ugh. I'd avoid it just for this reason, if nothing else. As I said, good for a quick "we need milk, bread and eggs" trip - but nothing else. Considering that my neighborhood doesn't have a decent place to purchase sustenance (because people in the hood don't eat anything but "curry-out" apparently) I travel just around all over Baltimore to stock my fridge. They have great options in their international isle, nice meat sales/clearance deals etc. but everything is always fresh. I'm a super fan during the summers where they have great grilling meat deals. Don't get me started on their fruits and veggies - OMG! I don't know WHERE these people are importing kiwis off season from but they are heavenly! And their veggies are always supper I usually go during the week so everything is always stocked up, the place is always clean, and the staff are very friendly.. I will agree with Javad A. on his review though - because of the area/clientele it's like the Saks 5th Ave of groceries, so I don't recommend you come here in your pajamas on a Saturday morning when you forgot syrup for your pancakes - you might get stopped by security... All the yoga fiends and exercise nuts are out, and the after work crowd comes straight from Wall Street. ;) Dress accordingly and get your shop on! read more

When it comes to grocery shopping, I choose convenience and proximity over other things. This is city life. Sure there are other grocery stores in the area, but not that I can reasonable walk to. Safeway is right around the corner, so it is where I do most of my shopping. That aside, it definitely isn't the greatest grocery store I've been in. It is perpetually understaffed, and it seems dated and dirty. My experiences directly interacting with the staff are varied. It seems like there is a lot of turnover because I hardly ever see the same people. Their selections meet my needs, and I like the produce. Despite some rude staff occasionally, and how they hardly ever have more than two lanes open, Safeway isn't that bad. read more

I've frequented this grocery store for the past year and it's definitely a hit or miss on fresh produce and meats at any given time. My worst experience occurred today. I visited this location to purchase smoked turkey but the location was sold out (so was the Charles St location) so I opted for the pork hocks. Bad choice! Although the expiration date was a week out, I returned home with my groceries to find that there was MOLD on the meat. I tried calling the store several times and finally reached an employee who was apathetic to my situation and flatly told me "Just return it..." Now my dinner plans have been ruined. I'm really not satisfied with this safeway. The prices are whole-foods sky high and the experience isn't the same warm-fuzzy feeling you get buying all organic overpriced. The ambiance is terrible. Underlit, weird vibe, and not as clean as you would expect for the premium price they expect that you pay. On the plus side, making it two stars, is the convenient location and proximity to Chipolte. Whole foods is better for the price point. Santoni's is so much cheaper, as is giant. And don't get me started on the merits of Wegmans. read more

Some a$$ shoved a cart right into my brand new truck and left an $800 dent! They have zero cameras in the lot.. so for that I already dislike them. As far as the actual grocery store: Every single time I come in here they are out of at least 1 thing I came for. Be it a Fruit, Cookies, Bread, Milk, Oj, Ice Cream, Cereal... etc. They do have good deals on meat. They are notorious for dropping popular products and keeping garbage that seems no one buys. I have gotten sick twice from their cake slices. Half of the staff is friendly, one lady that works evenings is AWESOME! I hate this market, but given that it's the only place to go in the area (I don't have a car), I am forced to go. They're produce are always wilted and sad. The prices are wrong - I got burned today when i bought something that had a "on sale" tag, but turned out not to be on sale. Whoops, Safeway Fail. Safeways in DC are worse than convenience stores, so I was pretty damn surprised when I walked in and it looked like a real grocery store. Unfortunately, all I have is a shopping list of complaints about this place. Let's go: -The website says they have a RedBox machine here. It's really some brand called DVDPlay. Annoying if you were expecting the real deal. -The dry cleaning is handled by Bergmann's. I tried it once. Turnaround time was 6 days. When I came to pick it up, I spent 15 minutes waiting for someone to come to the customer service counter so I get could get my damn shirts. I had another load to drop off but after waiting decided to take it elsewhere. This just prompted attitude from the cashier. -The seafood counter is open less than my bank. -There is a security guard but until standing inside and texting are crime deterrents, he's useless. I've been here twice when they were looking for a shoplifter. The security guard and one of the butchers (or could this be where the seafood counter guy is?) walk back and forth at the end of the aisle. All of the cashiers leave their stations to follow and giggle. Inevitably, nobody is ever caught and you stand at the checkout for 10 minutes reading Shape until they return. Appropriately, some shoppers take advantage of this opportunity to just walk out with their groceries. -The saving grace of this place are the made to order sandwiches. They were pretty good and the guy who made mine was one of three pleasant employees I've ever come across there. Harris Teeter will be here soon. read more

I wanted a plain iced cake for my cake topper- we were having cupcakes but wanted a cake to cut into. My sister recommended this Safeway since she lives in Baltimore and she would be the one picking it up. When I called and talked to the bakery department, the girl who took my order said it wouldn't be a problem. All I wanted was a carrot cake with no decorations on it. She said it would be ready for my sister to pick up and gave me a price. When my sister went to pick it up, there was no order for me. I even called a week before to move up the pickup time and was told it wouldn't be a problem. Turns out, they don't even bake those cakes there and I couldn't even order it there. The girl had no business taking my order in the first place. I was going to settle on something I didn't even want but I have a great sister that found me the cake that I wanted. Ridiculous store. I was there two mornings ago and every employee i passed was complaining about their co-workers, bosses, etc. In fact some husky voiced woman who is a manager was bitching and moaning about everything. Then as I was in the check out another manager came over the intercom system and said something like, "I know everyone is upset with the scheduling issues, and we are working now to fix them." Geez. Truthfully it is always unpleasant going here, but unfortunately in the area there is no other place to choose from. Many employees are so rude. And so tired of items not being priced. One guy Calvin is the only stand out as being a really good employee. But short of finding out his shifts I just have to get in and out of that store as fast as possible. I love the self-checkout lines when I need to just grab something quick and get out of there. The staff has always been friendly when I need help and there's always plenty of parking. This is an "okay" supermarket. It's kind of on the pricy side, and they somehow had an innate ability to almost always be out of several items that I went in there for at any given point in time...but never the same items, mind you. It's almost like someone there would get ahold of my shopping list ahead of time and go and hide things, just to screw with me. Parking here is nuts. The front parking lot is tiny, and people fight for spaces like they're on an episode of American Gladiator. I saw many a purposeful fender bender, and many fights take place here. The larger parking lot on the side is fine...just so long as you're not there at night (kinda sketchy) or trying to park there during the winter time, as they never plow it and it becomes one huge, giant sheet of lumpy ice for 3 months out of the year. I love that I live near a Safeway again! There's always parking available. The inventory is reliable, quality is fairly good, prices are reasonable - particularly if you have their loyalty card. I've never had a problem with the pharmacy. They are pleasant and thorough.

Ten years ago, this Safeway was "world class" with innovative marketing and, even, a remarkable selection of fresh flowers. But, now, it isn't world class. The place is very poorly managed and it shows. The olive bar and salad bar often look like they've been abandoned for days. The bakery, once a high point of the store, is now little more than a rack of old mislabeled bread. It is rare to find all four of the automatic check out machines working at the same time. The toilets are dirty and the last time I was there, one of the urinals was out of order. Most of the problems, aside from the grim, dark Safeway decor, stem from very poor management. On the plus side, the store has a broad selection of products and is convenient to the Canton neighborhood and nearby marinas. It used to be fun to shop here. Now it is just shopping. read more

Unless you want to be treated by rude cashiers, have only a small selection from which to choose, or buy fruits that spoil the minute you walk out their doors, then I would stay away from this place. Also, their pharmacy sucks as their auto refill system is out of whack. Most of their cashiers need to be replaced. They are so miserable they have to give you a sarcastic remark just for putting the divider thing between orders. After being their customer, since they first opened, I now refuse to give them any more of my hard earned money. I refuse to pay for the kind of service they think is acceptable and l will go out of my way to go to Highlandtown Market or Shoppers during the week for quick pick ups or to the Giant on Merritt Boulevard for my weekend shopping trips. I can also get more for the same amount of money at other area grocery stores with pleasant customer service. With so many people unemployed, they could do a better job of finding cashiers that really want to serve their customers. I have also transferred all my prescriptions from this store. Ya know what this bougie Safeway needs? Another bad review. After living in Butchers Hill and now Canton I've been to this Safeway a few times. I try to avoid it when I can but sometimes you just have to give in. I gave in last Sunday and came here for a big grocery shopping misadventure. I didn't have any problems with the staff, the checkout lady was pleasant, it was a busy as it usually is but the main difference I noticed this time was price/convenience/choice/quality. All of these were severely lacking. Wait, where did the organic section go? Have they never had one? Don't tell me a separate shelf containing lettuce and shitake is your organic section. And a section of Goya smaller than my arm span is not cutting it. Sure, you have 25 different types of peanut butter and 30 different styles of ketchup but where is your Bulgarian feta? That's a joke. I wouldn't even ask for that here. Wow! Look at the prices on this white people food. I say white people food because since living in Canton I've been shopping at the Highlandtown Market and Santoni's and am amazed at their selection of quality ingredients at great prices and run by local folks. What does Safeway have? Ready made meals that your lazy ass can eat right now. If you live anywhere east of this Safeway and have any cooking skills that will allow you to prepare a meal that doesn't come from a box or the ready to eat station then you should save your money and sanity and look into the real neighborhood grocery stores. But hey, that's why this is the bougie Safeway. I've learned my lesson with this place and after being a regular at other local groceries I have no use for this place ever again. But there is one good thing that Safeway does for me. The Canton Safeway is the Power Plant Live of grocery stores. It attracts all the shoppers who I don't want to deal with at my grocery store. The pharmacy here is pretty awful. Twice after surgeries, 9 years apart mind you, they told me they couldn't fill my prescriptions. Not when I dropped them off, but after coming back in two hours (once with a broken leg). Then waiting in line for 30 mins on top of it. Walgreens on Eastern Ave. had no problems with the scripts both times. The head pharmacist at Safeway had some type of technical issue with the way the script was written from Hopkins. Imagine being in pain, with a legitimate prescription in hand (hospital wrist band still on your arm) and being denied when all you want to do is go home and rest. On top of it they are not very nice and if there's 3 people in line for pick up you will be there for a half hour at least. I will never use this pharmacy again. We nickname this one "Satanway". I think that the devil could start having better taste in palaces, but whatever. Ridiculous lines anytime between 9am and 10pm; expect to wait 20-30 minutes for a self checkout at peak hours. Front end obviously gets slammed at around 4-6pm with lines 10 people deep, yet I have never seen all the registers open. Considering how high-volume this grocery store is, the un-freshness of the produce is baffling. Non-sale prices are noticeably higher than even the Safeway on Charles St. Much higher than 33rd or 40th street Giants. The parking lot here is equipped with metal plating underneath the asphalt so they can electronically monitor how long your car has been there. They will tow your car as soon as you hit the 2-hour limit; I work next door and see 10 or so cars get towed on a daily basis. Woe be upon you if you get towed, as the lot they tow to is on Falls Rd., almost in Towson. Not to mention exceptionally rude service; besides the one elderly woman that works at the Starbucks inside, I've gotten a fair share of cross looks while passing by the employees. While this major grocery store chain is doing a service to the city by existing where it is, I would still avoid it if you have the means to travel elsewhere. read more

I am counting down the days until the Harris Teeter opens on Boston Street, but since that isn't happening anytime soon, we are stuck with Safeway for convenience. First of all, the service here is terrible! Be prepared for employees here to look at you like you have 5 heads if you ask for anything. On multiple occasions I've also noticed cashiers haphazardly bagging items, which drives me crazy. The prices here are also way too expensive. Even with a Safeway card we pay much more money for groceries than I used to pay when I lived in Baltimore county. The quality of food is also subpar compared to Safeway's similarly priced competitors. I'm sure I would be more willing to come here if there were better prepared foods or a breakfast bar. I'd also be more willing to shop here if they didn't run out of things so frequently. On the weekends it can get out of control here. The lines are always super long and self-checkout is not efficient at all. The self-checkout machines are particularly slow and customer service isn't very willing to help move the process along. Safeway really needs to get its act together and once Harris Teeter comes maybe things will change. For now my rating will be a 2 (since we do shop here for convenience I can't really rate it a 1). read more

I've been patronizing the Boston St Safeway since mid-2006, and I've finally had enough. It's not a single thing; rather it's a combination of the high prices, inept workers, long lines, dingy atmosphere, and poor selection. How has Safeway gotten away with this terrible store for so long? Quite simply - there is a monopoly in the grocery business in Southeast Baltimore, and the customer loses. Whole Foods, The Markets in Highlandtown, and Santonis are the other options, but each lacks something preventing them from being my single-stop grocery store. Rather than be frustrated the next time I go grocery shopping I've decided to revisit other grocery stores I haven't been to in a while. I'd love to see Wegmans move in and wipe Safeway's smug attitude off the map. read more

This is a review of the pharmacy, which I also posted to the pharmacy yelp -- but that seems like it's not frequented much: Intolerable rudeness. I'll admit some level of guilt in this entire scenario, as my prescription had run out and I should have addressed the issue sooner. However, that's no excuse for what happened today. I relocated to Baltimore almost 2 years ago; I have been taking a certain medication for a good 6 years at this point. At home (CVS) I had the scrip on auto-refill, and when it "ran out" the automatically contacted my prescribing doctor, who automatically refilled the scrip. When I noticed the other day that my scrip said 0 refills BUT also said "autorefill on" I (unwisely) assumed that it would work the same way. Safeway would contact the prescribing doctor (a local doctor now) and the doctor would refill the prescription. I arrived to pick up the refill only to receive completely dismissive and outright rude treatment. She lectured me on not waiting until the last minute, first off, which FINE but it's not your job to lecture me. Let me back up--I was completely polite, humble, and admitted over and over that i should not have waited and that I was sorry for any inconvenience. I asked her if they automatically contact the doctor or not -- she interrupted me several times, making it difficult to actually ask the question. Finally, she said no and that it would not be until tomorrow to get my scrip (note: it's 2pm... why can't they just call the Doc and ask? There's literally nobody else in line and three people behind the counter). It's not an rx I can actually, physically go without -- so I asked if it would be possible to get a few to tide me over until then and she said yes (it's a one-a-day, so technically all I needed was one). So I stood waiting. I heard her call someone, "Georgina!" at least 3-4 times while waiting. That's not my name, that's nowhere near my name. Then she leaned out and said "Miss" and I came over. She said "I called you like 10 times, I was like GEORGINA!" -- I said that my name is not Georgina, so I did not realize she was calling me. She glanced at my rx and said "Sorry, but I done called you a bunch of times!" I'm sorry, you didn't call me, you called someone named "Georgina" and there was another lady at the counter when you called, so I assumed she was Georgina. Then she began to lecture me AGAIN about not waiting until the last minute to fill my rx. I apologized and once again explained that I was just used to it being automatically refilled by the doctor, and I didn't realize they didn't do that. THEN she says, "I'm telling you, we did contact the doctor. And we just contacted them again." Now, earlier I was told NO they did NOT automatically contact the doctor. At this point, I realize she said that because she wasn't listening to or understanding what I was trying to say. So I said OK and wondered aloud why the doctor hadn't refilled it -- she pointed to me and said "That's why you have to call and not wait until the last minute." I'm sorry, but ... I didn't know. Maybe a phone call to say the doctor wasn't responding? Maybe...something from the doctor? In any case, I'll accept a level of guilt but seriously -- could you at least ATTEMPT to not be a dick about it? So I continued to apologize, re-explained my situation once more and -- as I walked away -- she said under her breath "well, that was California. you're not in California anymore." What was that for? What was the point of saying that, and how is that not completely unprofessional and rude? Once my scrip IS refilled, I will be switching pharmacies. This isn't the first time they've been rude and dismissive, but it's the last time I'm going to stand for it. read more

I've been to this Safeway many times since it is the most convenient grocery store to my house. It usually has what I need, but nothing really special to highlight. HOWEVER I just had the worst experience I have ever had any supermarket. It is 1030 at night the store is relatively slow yet when I go to check out, there is a 10 person deep line and no employees in sight. I walked up and down to the store to see if I could find someone and as I returned someone showed up after about ten or twelve minutes of no attendance. I left leaving all my items in the checkout line. It seems like this place doesn't like money. If I could give it less than a star I would. Go anywhere else if you have a choice. read more

Why is this store so insanely expensive? For example, things like soy sauce or olive oil at the SW in Canton may be several dollars more for the exact same brand and size as what I can find at other stores. Beware, your car could get towed from this parking lot even if you are a customer! Do not shop at this store. They are terrible neighbors. In a high population area with a parking lot that is never at capacity and when there are plenty of spots open, they enjoy having cars towed. Ok, I honestly hate this place. During its busiest hours, it's like navigating a maze. The store is poorly laid out and there are people everywhere making getting around the store a nightmare. The prices are higher than any other grocery store I've ever been to and I feel like something annoying always happens in the parking lot. 99% of the time I will avoid this.
