I just discovered discovered this grocery store, and it's just blocks away from where I am stationed. The store is clean and the regular employee at the self checkout area is very nice. Most importantly, there is full service deli, and the store has pretty much everything that I need in terms of groceries. Today I purchased a family sized fruit tray that is enough for four people. I really have become more and more health conscious ever since the first of the year. The fruit tray isn't cheap, and that is to be expected in this area. I would say this location of Safeway is a hit or miss depending on what you are looking for. For the most part, it is where I go when I need to pick up staples. However, if you are looking for exotic ingredients to prepare a fancy meal, this may not be the spot for you. The customer service is adequate. That too is hit or miss. I walked by the deli/prepared foods section. Nobody asked if I needed assistance. I walked by the bakery. Nobody was there. I walked by the seafood. I was asked if I needed help with anything. So...one out of three....not so good. Oh. I almost forgot the cashier. She did ask me if I found everything I needed and if I needed bags. Because I brought my own bag with me, I had to bag my own groceries. Interesting! The store is clean and its emits basic grocery store vibes. No flare or fanfare. Not particularly thrilled with the staff at this store. I was sold some rancid lamb last weekend. Friend of mine bought 4 packages and gave me a package. Based on mine being rancid, she returned her three packages only I had the receipt in my bag - so of course, they hassled her for not having the receipt but yet they returned it anyway. Tried to return my package with the receipt at my local store but they wouldn't take it back because it wasn't purchased from their store receipt or no receipt. Fast forward a week later and I'm actually in Arlington and specifically wanted to return this stank meat once and for all. I'm left standing at the customer service area which was unstaffed. When I entered the store initially somebody was there but I guess she disappeared. I asked the lady in the floral department immediately adjacent where was the staff person and she sort of gestured and proceeded to continue to do whatever she was doing with her flowers. I asked again a minute later and she still doesn't help. I see who appears to be a manager having a conversation with a lady in a wheelchair that's going on the whole time I've been there and they're less than ten feet away, so ask her for help. Surely she notices from the corner of her eye that a 6'3 man is standing there appearing to need help? I'm hard to miss. Apparently not. She seems mildly annoyed that I've interrupted her "conversation" and enthusiastically points me to the sign that says they're not taking back anything and all store purchases are final. As per Covid-19 store policy. The End. Nothing she can do, and frankly it seemed clear it was nothing she really wanted to do even if she could. I don't like the vibe in this store at all. I left with the rancid meat and dumped it in the trash immediately outside the door and went on my merry way. Considering it was only a $10 package, I just let it go. Pass on this one. Willing to give this store one star for the couple of checkout ladies who are very nice. One of them has been with Safeway over 30 years! I'm new in the area, and as much as I enjoy those ladies, I told the manager I won't be returning. Had bad salmon last week - granted I didn't notice it was on sale before I bought it. Then, the worst rib eye - all horrible tough fat, lowest cut imaginable. An Almond Joy candy bar from checkout land was white and stale. Bakery cake slices are so old they're tough. Often things are out of stock so I end up going to the nearby Giant - almost as bad. My last visit was on a Saturday afternoon. Most of the self-checkout lanes had no bags. Asking the young girl if she could get some was evidently a hard chore for her. She finally returned and filled one station. The 15 items I scanned decided to cancel out and wouldn't let me pay, she said I had to rescan everything. Fed up, I just went through a normal line and told the manager who was checking me out that I could see the young lady and a coworker pointing and having a good laugh at my bad experience. He apologized but couldn't have cared less. I'm on Yelp today wondering where else to go for groceries. Willing to travel as far as it takes for half-way decent service. read more

I'm 67, Safeway has been around a long time. Generally, I like their meat. But Safeway has decided that their customers are thieves. Every misprint of their ad is a fight even when you show the cashier what the print ad says. It used to be the cashier would automatically give the price of the ad. Now they hold up the line for others even though they only have one checker lane open so they can go back to try to prove we are trying to thieve. They changed their ad from Wednesday to Friday, but whoever inputs into the system seems to be wiping out the sale price that is still in effect. I'm tired of trying to shop and having to fight for the sale prices they put in print and online. There are other grocery stores that are much cheaper. read more

Best part about Safeway is if you shop with their app, you can get great deals and often get items for free which has helped broaden my horizons because the free items are usually things I wouldn't normally buy. The worst part about this Safeway in particular is most everything else. Food is frequently mislabeled or not priced correctly. Nobody knows where anything is in the store. Your fruit and other fragile items are always placed at the bottom of the bag with your cans and glass jars thrown on top. The only way for my fruit to get home unscathed is if I pack it myself in the self checkout line. read more

Thought they would improve by now or be shut down. The inside itself is nice and they have a huge parking lot but my goodness- they sell moldy food. They are aware of this too. How can they not be? Their yogurts are expired. Their fruit is often moldy. It's really gross. I've told them too and they don't seem to care and nothing improves. they are still constantly out of products. I overheard someone bring back a rotisserie chicken bc it was raw inside and the manager didn't seem to care and asked if he wanted a replacement. I don't usually review anything other than restaurants, but I would want people to know about this Safeway, as I've lived down the street for 4 years and haven't been in until recently. This is SO much better than the Giant at Lee Highway/Spout Run, which I would go to because of its proximity to my apartment. But this Safeway is big, has a lot more selection, clean, and never too busy. I imagine the produce selection is better than the Giant because there is never fresh produce there. Also - right by the entrance, they have fresh fried tortilla chips, which are seriously good. Forget the chip aisle. read more

Appalling. Although I give this location bonus points for the spacious parking, wide aisles and rather logical layout (see the Wilson "underground" location, a nightmare through and through), a grocery store *should* be a grocery store. I stop here like clockwork every Monday after work to stock up on meats, veggies and drinks for the coming week. Now, it may just be the times that I show up (although I've been on other days of the week with the same issue), but they're always out of about half the things I need. My tastes aren't even that exorbitant (no bananas? no gala apples? no baby carrots? no vine tomatoes?). You're lucky if the deli has half the meats they say they do. I'm lactose intolerant, so I luck out when they're out of most of the regular milk supply. The meats are also a sorry affair -- the chicken all looks freezer burned and the beef selection is underwhelming at best (let's not even get into the seafood). This place is always severely understocked, and while I loathe Teeter's pricing, I always end up making a second trip there to get what I couldn't find at Safeway. Two stars for still having most of the things I need (on differing weeks) and a relatively fast checkout (at least compared to most other markets). I can't wean myself off out Safeway's soda deals, so I keep coming back. Buy 2 fridge packs, get 3 free? Count me in. read more

Three things bothered me: 1) The store seemed disorganized and cluttered. 2) I tried to buy a gift card and the cashier couldn't scan it. It turns out they were not able to sell any of the kind of gift card I was trying to buy, and took them all off the shelf. 3) They wouldn't just give me the Safeway discount when I forgot my card and didn't have a phone number. I've seen other grocers do this with no problem. And I really prefer Trader Joe's approach of never having anything on sale ever - instead they just keep ALL their prices generally low. It reduces decision fatigue. I get that locals will still come to places like Safeway, but when you have a choice, I think Trader Joe's and Whole Foods are much more appealing. read more

Super reetorted store. The Burger King of grocery stores. At least nobody punched or kicked me in the crotch here, but they did smack my pud with a bottle of beer. Flyer said 12pk of Yuengling on sale for 10.99. Got to the store and the sale price was 13.49,which is the regular off-sale price at the Giant down the street. Phukkin dooshbags. I did notice my flyer mentioning a digital coupon with a rebate of 2 additional dollars (8.99!) so I registered online and looked up the coupon and it only mentioned the $2 rebate, so it would be 11.49 instead of the 8.99 advertised. Just a steaming pile of suck-ass phart huffing. I spent zero dollars here. I wonder if the turd-juggling clowns in management understand how to run a grocery store. The entire beer department is on sale...but they jack up the regular price so the "sale" price is only what every other regular store charges normally. I guess they think I've never ever never EVER been to another grocery store or convenience store and looked at their prices, and if so, assume I can never remember them. At that point I just went out to the parking lot and paid the mentally challenged empty shopping cart jockey ten dollars to take the hardest kick at my sack that has ever been attempted thus far in my life. Being relatively new to the grocery scene here, I have learned that if I need something, Safeway can be iffy, but I was driving by and needed 2 things. Yup, TWO THINGS. Sure enough, one of the two just wasn't there, and it was frozen veggies. Um, who loves frozen veggies as much as me? Well, clearly someone does, because there were NO BIRD'S EYE veggies. NONE. ZIP. NADA. ZILCH. A huge hole where they used to be. It's not Thanksgiving, it's not a big "veggie season".... it's the last week of August, for heaven's sake. I have purchased Safeway's Potato Salad with Egg in the past. Recently I purchased it and it was different-- tasteless. I mentioned this to the manager-- that the quality of the product was variable, good some times and not good another time. The manager didn't act as if I knew what I was saying. I stopped buying this Safeway product for about a month. Last week I bought the potato salad again. It was terrible and tasteless. I don't believe any action was taken in my complaint. I have not been to this store in about 9 months. Things are a little different. I stopped off at 7:30 AM (They open at 6AM) to pick up a few needed items. After starting on my 4 item list I went to the milk....what happened? Absolutely no 2% milk to be found anywhere (unless you want the expensive $5.00 a gallon stuff.) the dairy case looked like a snow was expected....and this was October! Oh well, I moved over to the meat section. WOW! Same thing over here. So many empty voids in the beef section you would have thought that a hurricane was coming up the coast. As this point I said forget it. I am not going to waste my time looking for anything else nor paying more money for something which would be just a substitute. So I just checked out and left. So, be cautious if you try to come to this store early in the morning, they may not have restocked yet from the previous day. Better to wait until later or shop at a 24 hour store where they constantly restock. There were plenty of other items on the shelf, just not the basics I was looking for. I will not be returning for any of my early grocery runs. There are larger 24 hour stores which can get my money now. I've learned my lesson. read more

I LOVE the NEW SAFEWAY! They have new management and have redone everything and it is a GREAT experience. I honestly couldn't believe it when I first went in. Negative comments about the Safeway used to find their way into neighborhood parties (I know, very suburban. Complaining about a supermarket). Once they upscaled, it created a new positive buzz at those parties. The vegetable section now has wood-like floors, and is flanked by the wine section--giving a more upscale and quiet feel. They have new lighting, which--while still a supermarket--create a bit more mood. Since it has been redone I've been to Whole Foods just a couple times--and noted what a less fun experience it was. Why? Parking is always cramped at Whole Foods. Safeway I can walk to, and on the rare occasion I have to take my car it has voluminous parking--you pretty much get to choose where you want to park. Then--amazingly--I found Safeway had a much more diverse set of organic options. When I went to Whole Foods--I looked up and down for about 6 different organic fruits and vegetables I needed for dinner--to no avail. I left with one very overpriced bag ($83) of conventional produce. Safeway on the other hand has an awesome organic, fresh produce section--nice and separated from everything else. So if you only want organic food, you don't have to pick between the conventional and organic varieties sitting side by side, wondering if you are getting the right one (like they do at Whole Foods). As Whole Foods gets more and more commercial, we have found alternatives for our truly organic food. We belong to a community-supported agriculture program that gets us food that most aligns with our values. And we always find there are things that need filling in, and we have found SAFEWAY head and shoulders a better option to either the Giant around the corner, and, surprisingly, the Whole Foods a mile away. There is one final note on Safeway. I rarely see folks with major disabilities working at the places I frequent--and at Safeway I sometimes do. I appreciate them giving space for lots of different folks in our community to be able to incorporate themselves into our larger community and feel the dignity of a job. read more

I guess I've kind of risen up the ranks of the DC area Safeway's. Initially I lived in Adams Morgan, and had to deal with probably the worst grocery store I've ever been to, the Columbia Rd. Safeway (see my review). God, I remember one trip where they were completely out of milk AND eggs. My blood pressure is rising so I will move on......... I moved to the Dupont area and began to frequent the 17th St. Safeway, which was quite an upgrade. It was still cramped, crowded, and sometimes sold out of necessities, but overall it sufficed for day to day items. The Lee Highway Safeway reigns supreme. Spacious parking lot and store, friendly employees, and a good layout. Grocery shopping is so much more enjoyable when your not feeling claustrophobic. It still has nothing on Wegmans, but it works. Lines at checkout can be a pain, but not too bad. And no crackheads using foodstamps to slow down the checkout process! Oh, and they sell beer and wine. After living in DC, this is a nice bonus. read more

Five year old bubble gum snatchers and teenaged beer bandits beware! Someone overhead is watching you and it ain't God. Consider this Safeway safer than most or expect your criminals to be captured from all angles, all isles and in every nook and cranny. Looking overhead, I spied more security cameras than Tiffany & Co could ever have. It's almost unsettling and makes me wonder what they're preparing for. Safeway's remodel is long overdue. The store is cleaner and more contemporary compared to dilapidated disappointment that used to occupy these four walls. Safeway 2.0 will likely give its neighbor, Giant Foods, a little run for its money. Will it be enough to compete with Trader. Joes, Harris Teeter and Whole Foods? No. The lack of natural light is uninviting unless you're used to shopping at midnight. Could the lack of light be influencing the service? I've never been greeted warmly by any staff. I worked for Safeway for three years and the company has really changed their customer service expectations. Efficiency didn't come along with this remodel. The lines were long during off hours with one cashier for big orders and the self checkout was the only remaining alternative. I came in for one item, but I could have driven a little further to Harris Teeter and would have been home sooner. This hasn't changed over the last eight or nine years at this location. Verdict: Plenty of security cameras will keep watch as you flip through your smartphone trying to kill the time. Smiles not included. It's good enough for your weekly grocery shopping if you have the time to wait. I'll keep it as a resource for emergency provisions only. read more

Although I've had the occasional issue with this store (low number of checkout lanes; low stock of items), it isn't any better or worse than any other local grocery store at any given time. The store is in good condition, the parking is usually plentiful and the parking spaces are reasonable. That's a lot more than I can say about many of the local stores. read more

Took Scott and I five whole minutes to find the beer section (it's located behind the wine FYI). I don't know why they don't just put all the refrigerated items in the same section of the store. It was very confusing and it's just such a Safewayian thing to do. It's making the entire store very chilly because the non refrigerated sections are wedged in between the refrigerated sections and its causing a polar vortex effect throughout the store. That being said, they had a very good selection of beer including Ballast Point. Scott got the pineapple sculpin which I recommended. I guess some people value my opinion. read more

I only go to Safeway when absolutely necessary. I usually go to Wegmans and Harris Teeter for regular shopping. I get the feeling this is one of the better Safeways in the area, so I guess this is enough to earn the 1 star I'm required to give. The cashier way friendly enough, but he was THE cashier. This was around 5:00pm on a weekday - right when everyone is trying to get something on their way home. There were, however, 15 (no exaggeration) people stocking the shelves, but they might be rearranging things or remodeling. The cashier also became the customer service agent when a customer came to return milk that went bad and there was no one at the customer service desk. I guess they don't have customer service. I was looking for only one thing - 1 or 2 rolls from the fresh bakery section. None of the rolls were fresh, or really even close. It looked like the store had a bakery, or at least an oven, but they didn't make any rolls that day, or the day before that for that matter. There were rolls there, but all were hard as a rock. I ended up having to get a bag of rolls. It just seems to me that the freshest stuff should be in the bulk roll bins. All this just confirms that the drive to Wegmans is worth it any week. read more

Went to this Safeway because my usual Giant was under construction. First stop, the customer service desk to get a club card. Well, no one was at the desk and there wasn't a bell or anything to communicate to someone to come to the desk. After about 5-10 minutes of me standing there, a cashier ask me what I needed, gave me the application and left me. I filled it out, waited for another 5-10 minutes like an idiot before the cashier told me he could give me the card. Safeway was out of gallons of skim milk when I went, which I think is pretty bizarre since milk and bread are grocery store staples. The lines for the cash registers were insane (the only had two or three open). One of the cashiers asked another guy to come help out and he yelled across the store that he didn't want to so he wasn't going to. Pretty ridiculous. We shopped around a bit price wise as well. While the sale prices are comparable to area stores, they jack up the normal prices to make it seem like you're saving a bundle. (e.g., Corona was on sale for $12 or $13--the same sale price as giant, but Safeway claimed the regular price was about $20, when the regular price at Giant is closer to $15; same thing with a few other products as well). The shelf prices aren't that great so if I'm going to pay full price for something I'd rather go to Harris Teeter, which has way better customer service and a cleaner store. read more

Across the Potomac, everyone has cute names for the assorted Safeways in the district: Soviet Safeway, Social Safeway, unSafeway, Suburban Safeway, et. Al. Under the same style, I dub this the "Slow Safeway". As a neighborhood supermarket for the Cherrydale/Waverly Hills area, it does okay. There are some problems in having a lack of staples available as others have mentioned, but it works well for those who don't want to schlep down to the other stores in the area or pay inflated 7-11 prices. The customer service, on the other hand, isn't that great. If you have 10 checkouts available, you should have more than 3 open during peak hours and if anyone wants cash back you should have the cash on hand to give it back. It shouldn't take 5 minutes to get $20 to give back because you have no cash and you're the only register open. Things like this are only an open invite to give my business to the Giant down the street or to go up to Harris Teeter up Lee Highway. This could also be called the "Safeway that time forgot" as it hasn't been bitten by the "lifestyle" bug of new signs, wood floors in the produce section, etc. etc. It's a bit quaint seeing the early 90's flashback decor, but given the neighborhood, clientèle, and competition they really deserve better. Its a great store with lots of sales. I work at the deli, and though the prices can be high, they always have great sales.

This is my supermarket go to. I grew tired of the two Arlington Harris Teeters, the one in Ballston being insanely crowded, and the one in North Arlington being a daycare center. This Safeway has obviously been renovated, it puts the Safeway on Wilson Blvd in Ballston to SHAME. I go at various times during the week and weekend, and RARELY have problems with stocked items. The parking lot is generally crowded near the street entrances, but if you just park a little further away and WALK, you're fine. People dont realize how convenient a 45 second walk TRULY is- it could be a lot worse folks. The staff here is really kind and helpful- they'll go out of their way to help me if I cant find what I'm looking for, or suggest different items if what I like isnt stocked that week (mostly Organic things that I assume come in smaller quantities). It doesnt get a 5-star because that's saved for Wegmans in Fair Oaks, but it's a great choice less than a mile from my apartment! read more

I only buy something here if I am in the neighborhood and really need it. However, the last straw came Saturday (day before Easter). My husband needed to go to Cherrydale hardware and went to Cherrydale Safeway to pick up Easter flowers for his mother. They were drooped over the next day (Easter) before he could give it to his mother. Not sure how that happens--maybe they froze the flowers at one point by accident? He had to go out and buy a new set to give her. If I can figure out how to post a pic of the droopy flowers I will.
