Its a great store with lots of sales. I work at the deli, and though the prices can be high, they always have great sales.

Just got home and two different items I bought were already expired - great! Guess I need to check everything I buy from here next time!

I had to run in to a grocery store on a time crunch to pick some things up for a work holiday party. For some reason, I always assumed that Safeway is cheaper than Harris Teeter but damn, was I wrong. HT is selling sweet potatoes for 29 cents a pound currently on a promotion; Safeway was charging over 1$ per pound. Sounds silly but when I was buying a large amount, the difference adds up. When I went to check out, I grabbed the eggs to put them on the belt and my hand was covered in raw egg. Turns out the eggs were broken. I know I didn't do any intense basket throwing but I alerted the cashier, who did not seem to understand what I was saying at all. After 3 minutes, and the conveyor belt being covered in raw egg, she called the manager over. He opened the container and told me only 1 egg was broken...BS sir, because if you lifted the container you could see the bottom of 4+ eggs were also broken. Instead of being polite and offering to run to get another, him and a bag boy just discussed the issue at hand and ignored me. OK I can live without the eggs. The real kicker was that my items totaled to 44$ so I paid with a 50$. The cashier gave me back 1$ plus the change...I brought it to her attention that she still owed me money and she was tried to argue, saying my check was 49$ when it clearly wasn't. She proceeded to ring up the woman behind me and made me wait for 5+ minutes just to give me the rest of my change. Honest mistakes happen but don't 1) inconvenience me for your mistake and make me wait when I was running late and 2) get flustered and tell me I am wrong when the numbers didn't add up on the check. This Safeway is a waste of your time and its NOT cheaper. read more

So I like this safeway for how quiet is gets when I go after work during the week (usually around 8 at night). I will say the selection is limited but for the most part it has everything I am looking for when I go. I will give you all fair warning that I tend to avoid fresh unpacked food as I travel a ton for work but I can get the meat I need for the weekend I am home and the packed veggies are perfect portions for the weekend in my place. I recommend going if you do not want to deal with massive crowding but I would not go if you are looking for huge selections. read more

Three words: Cheeseburger Lean Pockets. I assume that those three words brought three more words to mind: Jim Gaffigan bit. Yes, I've seen the bit. And yes, I've sampled some pretty fine cuisine in my time, so my taste isn't ALL cheap and artificial. But, as embarrassing as it is, in addition to an affinity for heavy drinking, a borderline useless liberal arts degree, and a soft spot for orange and blue, college bestowed upon me a great fondness for these unhealthy little cheesy pockets of love. For whatever reason, there are very few grocery stores in the DC metro area that stock their freezers with this particular "flavor" of the Lean Pocket delicacy. I'm sorry if this sticks in your head, because now, like me, you're doomed to a future of always checking the stash of pockets, but the only other place around here that I've seen Cheeseburger Lean Pockets is the Soviet Safeway in Dupont. So four stars to this Safeway for allowing me to continue to indulge myself with a tasty pocket of cheese and nostalgia when all other grocers would deny me that pleasure. *hot pocket* read more

ehhh Thing are cheaper but everything is not very fresh including fish and well anything you might get luck with a honey crisp apple green apples mushrooms avocados or some ice cream but its normally bad and even some listed are probably better at haris teeter the wallpaper seems to never change and its a depressing beige There used to be rude workers people at the Safeway though this might of changed a little there still a women who tried to crack a joke about me over buying one little tub of coconut delicious ice cream. Most of the staff are nice however and the guy staff is often very sweet and some I know myself and work there put on the nicest expression and seem to be even nicer and more fulfilled there. Its not one of those depressed employee safe-ways where I want to hug them and say its okay I am guessing the workers are taken care of okay its sweet and nice people wise but the food itself is kinda not the best I do like some things I cannot get a Harris teeter read more

I usually go to Harris Teeter for my grocery shopping. I decided to try this Safeway location. The store had almost everything I needed. I gave three stars because I had to wait 10 minutes in the checkout line and the cashier was not very friendly. read more

Blown away by kindness! As my daughter and I were doing what all the cool kids do and grocery shopping on a Saturday night. The super nice lady at self checkout went grabbed this bear, bought it, and to my surprise had it sitting in the cart for us when I turned around to load the groceries. I was utterly humbled by this complete act of kindness and generosity. I will certainly be going to the Cherrydale Safeway every time I need groceries now, THANK YOU! read more

Love this new and improved Safeway! It's no Trader Joes or Whole Foods, but the options for grocery stores outside of the immediate Orange Line corridor that don't make you feel dirty while you're shopping are pretty limited. This Safeway is now clean and bright, with expanded organic and locally sourced selections. The parking is free and ample, the location is convenient, and the staff members are always always super nice. I think they are doing a good job with managing the registers from what I've seen so far - I have been stopping in on my way home from work, during peak hours, and have very rarely waited in a line for more than a minute or two. Very happy with the upgrades and will gladly shop here in the future. read more

This is a "nice" Safeway. Meaning nicer than other "ghetto" Safeways (I'm looking at you, Safeway on Wison Blvd.). Still, its produce is terrible. The stock of perishable dairy items is often low (or about to expire). Many of their other "fresh" items aren't - bread beyond expiration dates, etc. This Safeway ranks well below Harris Teeter and Whole Foods for quality, but hasn't sunk quite as low as Giant. read more

Your sales associated are outrageous!! An item rings up wrong, the first woman goes back and agrees with me that it should be the lower price as marked on the shelf, but doesn't change it. She calls a second woman who goes back to look at the shelf and then tells us that the item isn't on the shelf and that the sale doesn't apply to it. I said yes it is, do you think I just pulled this item out of thin air? I went back to the shelf with both of them in tow and pointed to the entire shelf of that item as well as the sales tag that has that specific item name printed on it with the sale price. Then she tried to say that it wasn't for that item!!! OUT-RAGEOUS! Will make sure not to come back to this store. read more

Great place if you have an hour to wait for a deli order. Employees ignore customers and appear to have no interest. Don't ask for deli paper. read more

Every time I go into this store, there are never more than 2 or 3 registers open, however there are always long lines going up the grocery aisles of the store. It's close and convenient, but I have started going to other grocery stores in the area because of this. Additionally, the fresh fruit and vegetable section is not that great either. read more

Big parking lot and clean grocery store but the deli department is just bad. Most of the deli staff are either mildly rude, really high or both. I go here because it's convenient and I know the store layout. read more

Decent store, especially bakery and meat department are great. There is a lot of verity. Food is always fresh. The price of produce can be very high if it's not on sale. The customer service is okay. read more

Very friendly staff and the produce section is looking so much better. Starting to go here instead of HT or WF.

Is this the Cherrydale Safeway? I thought my day couldn't get any worse until I tried to use the bathroom. Opened the door and got a whiff of a well set and dried urine (and other stuff) from the bathroom. I'd describe everything in detail but I don't want my review removed. Really helps me get in the mood for eating... read more

Yep... Had it with this place... I've been going here for years... This is the closest major grocery store to my house... I won't bother to echo the complaints that others have made about the general dinginess of the store, or the super irritating staff (and management)... Don't bother asking why a product suddenly isn't being carried any longer... Last week, for the third time in a row, I got home to find that I'd purchased products that had already gone bad in some way... The last incident involved a package of cheese... Two weeks past the sell by date... I know... I should check this, but who really checks sell by dates any more? Purchased a package of mold... The cheese slices were melted together into a big chunk... Just went to take an orange out of the bag of oranges I'd purchased, and they were all covered with a fine carpet of delicious blue/green mold... These were purchased three days ago... I won't be shopping here any longer, and I am contacting the county... This is the third time I've brought home rotten produce, and products that were weeks beyond the sell by date... Management here doesn't care that the store is doing a poor job, or that the store should be thoroughly sanitized... This place is horrible... No more... I'll make the drive to the Safeway on Harrison... Update: 1 March 2014... HUGE overhaul here... The new Cherrydale Safeway is much improved... Well done! read more

I like this Safeway in general (clean store, friendly/helpful employees) but wanted to give a special shoutout to the Pharmacy for being patient and extremely helpful as my insurance company put us all through hell. It would have been easy for them to tell me I was out of luck, but they were persistent and helped me get the benefits and pricing I needed. Well done. read more

As Safeways go, this one is pretty nice: clean, night lighting, short checkout lines, convenient parking.

We stayed at a Motel close to the store and came there several times to get some groceries. The Cashier named David was super friendly from the very beginning and recognised us when we came in. Because we are from Germany he started talking to us in German which was so great and unique! We enjoyed shopping at this store so much! Thank you David for being so friendly to us! It was a pleasure :) read more

This safeway is pretty dirty, I've seen two or three mice running between aisles before. They take a while to take Sale signs down, so read the fine print or you'll have to pay full price at the register. Speaking of register, there are never more than one or two open, so prepare to wait. There is a mentally handicapped bag boy with a fiery temper and abusive language. Do yourself a favor and go to Giant at Lyon Village instead- cleaner and similarly priced. read more

It's okay. Selection is fairly good, prices are fairly good, service is decent and things are generally clean. Parking and ease of access might be best of all. But (and it's a big but) the quality/variety of produce/seafood/meats just aren't very good. This store blows away the giant next door, but compared to Harris Teeter or Whole Foods, the fresh food selection is a little older/smaller/lower quality 90% of the time. Not egregiously worse, but still noticeably worse. The wine/beer selection is formidable, although the bakery can be downright scary (I've spotted mold growing on 'fresh baked' bread numerous times). read more

This store again is playing unattractive 'musak' at an intrusive volume. After customers had complained some time back the turned down the volume, but are not blasting as if their customers were all 15 years old. Go across the street to Harris Teeter. They have no musak. read more

Outstanding floral department. We usually employ Greenworks or Merrifield for arrangements and decided to take a chance with the designers at the Cherrydale Safeway because I had been impressed with what we'd seen. Long story short, the two ladies who run that shop created one of the most elegant designs I've ever seen (always use the same vessel -- about 9inch at base, 11 inches deep and 14 inches wide, so quite large). The quality of the flowers was superb -- roses, hydrangeas and exotics. There was not a single "filler" flower in the entire arrangement and the cost was about half what Greenworks was going to charge us. We like the rest of the store, but LOVE the floral shop. I encourage you to work with them and use them for holidays and events. When I shared pictures of the arrangement they made for our event, my friend (a Master Gardener) was blown away. read more

i am a local who frequents whole foods and trader joes and I find myself coming back here more and more at the expense of going to WFs. they have a lot more organic produce than in the past, they have the brands I need, prices are usually par or cheaper than WFs, and they are a lot closer for in and out. Like it a lot! read more

Great upgrades to the store. Excellent selections. Very competitive prices. Don't buy the pork chops if the packaging covers the bone. Had some recently where the bone is thicker and heavier than the meat. read more

Do not shop here. I bought milk here that was bad the next day. The store would not take back the items even though it was their brand. The prices are more expensive than even the Whole Foods. Crappy food and crappy service. read more

Mixed review as pharmacy is fantastic, but remainder of store is mediocre. Pharmacist goes above and beyond; however store never has enough checkout lanes open. read more

Great selection, clean store, but their pricing is terrible! They have great sales, but the prices never ring up at sale price, so I always end up being charged far more than I should have been, which I always realize when looking at my receipt. read more

The Deli is a joke. The people working there, from the manager to the employees, are not only incompetent but are liars and hostile to their customers. I talked to a Nicole and ordered a Turkey Dinner they advertised on 11/18. I asked for a 12-lbs turkey but was told I can order a 15-lbs one. I said ok. But the day before the T-day, someone in broken English and heavy foreign accent left a msg saying there don't do turkey no more. I called up and asked to speak with Nicole who informed me that her supervisor told her they wouldn't take my order. After some going back and forth, she said they wouldn't do a 15-lbs but they can still do a 12-lbs one. I said fine, but I wanted a guarantee that a 12-lbs turkey would be ready for my pick up at noon on Friday, the day after the T-day, when 15 family members would arrive from all over the country to celebrate the T-day. Nicole said emphatically that she would be sure to be there on Friday to give my turkey herself. She described how and when the turkey is cooked that morning, how nice and warm it would be when I pick it up at noon, and that all I need is to heat it up...Well, when I showed up on early Friday morning just to make sure there would be a turkey for me to pick up at noon, the so-called manager Erin yelled at me, saying she was not in charge (clearly she was), she had nothing to do with my order whatsoever, that there was no turkey being cooked...and quickly ushered me out of the Deli to the store manager, Jaumale Sykes, who calls himself a "Store Director," acted as if he didn't know anything about it either. He made me wait for over an hour while making a few phone calls and being put on hold. He finally asked another employee to go somewhere else in Alexandria to pick up the turkey dinner I ordered. He never explained why his Deli never did roast the turkey that morning like I was told. When I arrived to pick up my order at the Deli at noon, there was no Nicole. One female, Shafon, handed me a Turkey and a box that's filled with only half of the sides that the turkey dinner was supposed to include. I told her how much of the mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and the stuffing are missing. She said she only has one box. I went to see Sykes who by now had his door closed as if he didn't want to be bothered. I showed him the box content and asked him where were the rest. He went back to the Deli and came out with another identical box. He never even once apologized for the store's bait-and-switch, misleading business practices or for his Deli employees' lying and hostile conduct toward customers. It's truly incredible to have this WTF experience happened to me in a supposedly a friendly neighborhood grocery store like this Cherrydale Safeway. I'm very disappointed and embarrassed about having it in my neighborhood. Shame on you for treating your neighbors like the way you do. read more
