My cashier didn't say one word to me, not even tell me my total. I greeted then, mention I didn't need a bag and thanked them all while they just stood, rang my items and had their ear pods in. herbert from the flower section is the definition of an unprofessional individual that wanted nothing to do with helping customers. he acted like he was busy and told me he was way too busy to help me. I went to customer service to see if I could get anyone else to help me but I was told he's the only person able to help me as that's his department, the manager calls him over to help me only for him to tell the manager he's too busy to help me and when told he needs to help me he spoke to his manager like I wasn't there and processed to speak to her with an attitude. if you don't want to work with customers then maybe don't get a job that is customer service based? read more

I came in here to do some last minute grocery shopping for the upcomming work week, and thankfully they were still open. I needed just about every food type, which included fruits, vegetables, chicken, milk, some ground beef, and milk of course. I particularly liked the extensive ready made meal section. They had some wonderful chicken Italian meatballs and smoke mozzarella penne salad that looked delicious. It was nearly 9pm when I arrived to the store, and here were very few customers doin their shopping. Some of their items were priced a little high I thought, but for the most part everything was affordable, and they had everything that I as looking for, and then some! the Starbucks inside the store as also very cool, even though I didn't get any coffee because of the late hour. SAFEWAY ON ENGLESIDE-EXPIRED MEAT SOLD ON THEIR "MANAGER'S SPECIAL" I don't know how this location is still in business . The ONE time I decide to shop there I bough hot dogs off of their "Manager's Special" come to find out it's expired.. I went to return it. The person at the customer service desk lets me swap it. Okay no problem.. Later come to find that other items I had bought from their "Manager's Special" were also expired. I returned to swap the kielbasa..Another person at the customer service desk gives me the okay to swap in front of the manager...and as I was about to go the manager asks me if i have a receipt (on a power trip Little Man Syndrome) I explained to him I'm a new customer (I usually shop at Wegmans ) and I don't keep receipts for groceries...out of courtesy I should be allowed to swap the item this one time. That didn't matter...So thats when I got pissed and I told him I bet you I'll find more expired food under your "Manager's Special" I went back to the meat isle and found the BURGERS EXPIRED 2 MONTHS AGO I showed it to the manager and all I got was a blank stare.. He offered no apology! Absolutely no consideration for the health and safety of their customers. I should've read their reviews on Yelp before taking my business there because apparently this is an ongoing problem with this store.. Something so simple.. it could've been over in 2 seconds. The other day I got the spoiled grapes. Here and maybe should not have gone back but Because it's a convenient location I decided to go back. I tried to return an item today and it was a nightmare. no one was at the customer service deskan announcement came over the intercom several times sounding like it was calling for someone to come but no one did until the nice woman from Starbucks came over and tried to help me. I never did come up with a resolution but the second time I was at the desk there was a long line and the people were talking about it not being a very good store. I would have to agree. I am stuck with an item I don't want. Finally I just told the woman to never mind I would go home and write a bad review and she cheerfully said, "OK ". I would've thought That would be her cue to call for a manager but maybe she knew the manager didn't care and would be pointless. I need to find a different place to shop. read more

I was at this location yesterday to buy flowers for my mom. They have a lot of beautiful selection but I was looking for something specific and the manager, Kaye, did not bother to help me and accommodated my request. If I could give this no stars I would. The employees (with a couple exceptions) are rude and useless, the general manager is the poster child for why unions exist, and every time I go I see a health code violation. Their meat has made me sick now twice RIGHT AFTER TAKING IT HOME and most of their products are expired. I can see this store from my house and I've cut my visits down to canned goods. Even then, it takes me longer to get through the one line open than it would to drive the 15 minutes to Wegmans. Eight check-out lanes and I've never seen more than 3 in use and I've been (unfortunately) coming here for years due to it's proximity to home. My advice: Bring a book. Basically I'm going to start off by saying what I like about this Safeway at the 8646 Richmond Hwy location. It is the closest grocery store to where I live (until they possibly finish that road that goes to Telegraph road - then I will be going to the Giant on Telegraph all day). The prices are decent. The lines aren't bad if you go in the evenings. Never had a problem with the staff. Now for the bad. First of all, it seems run-down. I think I was spoiled in other cities I have lived in in VA and outside the state where I was treated to 5-star grocery stores that were spotless with the highest quality food and service. There are some of those in Alexandria, just not on Route 1. This Safeway is definitely not spotless. It is in somewhat a run-down, old shopping area. The parking lot is a mess and unpaved. There always seems to be police in the parking lot or across the street. You will often find loiters and beggers if you go late at night right outside the store doors. It is hit or miss when it comes to food - produce, veggies, fruits, and meats. Sometimes they are stocked and sometimes they are empty (I mean literally empty). For example, I never have seen a grocery store be 100% out of chicken on a weekday evening. The already-cooked section (Signature Cafe) is decent. Overall, if you mainly are looking for fresh foods and usually stay away from the center portion of grocery stores (cookies, junk food, and processed cans), then this Safeway location is pretty mediocre. All I'm saying is that if that road gets finished, I probably won't be going to this Safeway again. read more

So this Safeway was newly updated and nice not that long ago. Preferable to shoppers and giant and the other two smaller safeways nearby. Then they remodeled the belleview one and are clearly phasing this one out. More of a sketchy parking lot and not as nicely maintained. Still most of what you need though. So why the two stars? They almost always have one or two lines open and no more. Even during the after work rush or pre-football Sunday rush, etc. I have waited literally 45 minutes before. No self pay units or anything. I guess I have had much better luck at this store than the other 2 reviewers. When I worked down the street at Fort Belvoir, this place was my go-to lunch break destination. Not always for buying lunch, but sometimes to pick up a few items that would survive the over-stuffed refrigerator at my workplace for a few hours until I could take them home. It is correct to say that this isn't the largest or most well-stocked grocery store in the area, but it does have all the necessary staples, and I have always enjoyed the friendly demeanor of the employees. I went to this location because I needed to get some things from the store and I wanted something from Starbucks. I ordered a "Grande Mocha Frappuccino" and the worker there (I don't remember his name) said "What the f**k. Why is everybody ordering frappuccinos today? It is f**c**g cold outside." This is a really bad Safeway. The produce is always bad. So bad in fact, that I've seen rotten herbs in the fresh herbs section. Do not buy the badge lettuce! The service is also bad. The last time I went in, I had a coupon that didn't work and the cashier had to call the manager 4 times before she showed up. I waited 5 minutes and there was a long line behind me. I would have just left but it was a $2.50 coupon. This place is fine if you need to run in quick and grab a couple staples but I would not recommend it be the place for your weekly shop. read more

Positives outweigh the negatives, so let's start with that. It's a convenient store. It fulfills the basic needs of a grocery story, and it does a great job with it. It seemingly never runs out of stock, and if it does, the store will have it by the next day. The cashiers are zany and friendly, and they always have something to talk about. It's not the best place to shop. Most of the time, it is only two registers serving lines of customers, and it's normally people who are slow at checking out/bagging. The help here isn't substantial either, with managers almost never in sight, and the lines fill up quickly. The produce section has more rotten produce than you'd normally see in a grocery store, which is next to none. I'd like to see this store be cleaned up, and find new, younger cashiers/clerks to help out around the store. This isn't a store I'd recommend going to often. Prices are often high, with little savings if you don't have the Safeway app. It is not the best store, but if you're looking for anything less than 10 items, it's the right one. 2 out of 5 stars. read more

Been shopping here for 7 years only cause there is nowhere else to go. Store itself isn't bad overpriced and don't expect any kind of customer service. And for pharmacy omg what mess. Never keep anyone and rude RUDE. Been getting the same medicine every month for years with no problems. The new lady now doesn't even check the computer to see if it's in stock apparently she is that good she knows what she has and doesn't need to check. Everything is always takes a week. I'm okay with using coupons, minor hassle if price is reasonable. Safeway has deals that you can scan in with your card (another minor hassle) and get a discount at checkout. Sometimes another minor hassle is the discount prices don't show until the end, not as they scan it. So I go through the drill of scan my card, give them the coupon, and wait for the discount. I notice the discount wasn't given and when I asked about it, and only then was I told (scolded) that I needed to clip out the coupon (I had it folded to the one I was using). I can put up with the minor hassles (still working on discounts not showing until totaled), but a rude cashier? Dude, get a job where you don't have to interact with customers. read more

I live close to this store, so it's one of my only choices as I'd rather shop at Wegmans on the way home from Quantico. This is absolutely the worse run store I've ever been in. The employees are rude, the store smells like it has a sewer leak. I was in this store, one line open (15 items or less). I had a full cart, when I went to only line (15 items or less) the employee indicated I could't use her line, bottom line no way to check out. She finally relented but was mad. Does anyone remember that episode of "Good Times" when Florida buys the bad roast from Morgans? This store sells bad meat and seafood. I made the mistake of shopping while hungry. I made my way to the frozen seafood section and stumble upon a "bargain" bundle of crab legs for 6 bucks (perhaps my first error). I got excited and realized I didn't have a nutcracker so I conveniently found one for 7 dollars(error number 2). I then said hey I don't have any butter for these crab legs so I bought a pack of butter...I get home and realize the damn things are rotten and they bathed them in bleach to slow the decomposition process (I chalk this up to my own greediness and take one for the team). Anyone that lives in the area would know that this store is prone to floods and power loss that last for days on end. Long story short, and much like Florida, I found out that after a power outage this store's meat selection was completely brown and spoiling. After remembering my crab leg experience I found a person that identified himself as a manager and informed him that all the meat is brown and should not be sold. His response was one of extreme indifference and "thanked" me for my concern.........I dislike coming to this store or Safeway in general. Besides the nasty manager with the bad attitude and the local union badge (just so you know she doesn't give a shit) and the extremely high prices, I avoid this place at all costs. read more

I wish I could give this grocery store less than one star. The produce is always terrible - half rotten on the shelves. I bought baby food here that I discovered was expired once I got home. They took it back, but no apology and a great deal of attitude. They actually told me I didn't buy it in their store, until they looked it up in the computer and saw that it was indeed their brand. They routinely only have one or two lines open, even at busy times (the days leading up to Christmas, for example.) When I got in line the other day the cashier said, "Oh sorry, I'm closing." (There were only two lines open and the lines were long and I only had two items.). While I was waiting in the super long line with only two items, the cashier just walked away. Two people in front of me put their items to the side and left saying it "wasn't worth it." I agreed, but was desperate. The Kingstowne Safeway is beautiful and well-run. I wish the Corporate Safeway team would give this store an overhaul like that. Until then, I'll be found going WAY out of my way to Harris Teeter. It's worth it! read more
