If you've ever wondered what it's like to pay premium prices for a bargain-basement experience, welcome to Harris Teeter on North Saint Asaph. The self-checkout area is a masterclass in frustration. There aren't enough lanes, the systems look like they were installed sometime during the Bush administration, and half of them are usually "temporarily out of service" with paper bags draped over the screens like little brown tombstones. The line regularly stretches toward the back of the store, so forget "quick trip." The few seasoned employees who work that area really do try, but most of the self-checkout staff have perfected the art of standing nearby while being remarkably unhelpful. Prices, of course, are sky high--which might be easier to swallow if the place didn't feel so out of control. Shoplifting is clearly a sport here; you can literally watch people grab cases of beer and stroll right out the door. Handheld baskets are scarce because those walk out too. Outside, the loading dock area frequently smells putrid, and the seating area that's supposed to be for paying customers is often taken over by loiterers and left dirty and uninviting. It's not exactly the relaxing neighborhood grocery vibe they're going for. And then there's the parking garage. The lighting is dim enough that you half expect a crime drama to be filming in the corner. It feels dingy, not safe or welcoming, and the escalators from the garage to the store are out of service so often they might as well be decorative art pieces. For a grocery store in the heart of Old Town, this place should feel clean, secure, and well-managed. Instead, it's giving "municipal chaos with luxury pricing." read more

During my last few visits I've noticed an abundance of food items that are several months beyond the SELL BY date. Over it!

BE CAREFUL! Every time I get home, I discover at least a few food packages have been opened, seals broken, and the receipt doesn't reflect the sale on the items in the circular. The elevator is always under repair. Managers and security are needed. The 2 stars are given because at least the cashiers and store employees are nice. read more

I highly recommend shopping at Trader Joe's or Whole Foods across the city. I ordered a large order or meat for Christmas dinner a week in advanced. Left all my information and on the day or pick up they didn't have it. The gentlemen behind the counter said it was the holiday and the delivery truck didn't come. However, I've been shopping at HT for years. Never had a similar experience. Much like any business , when you can't deliver , you give your customer a call to inform them. They didn't even try this. I've had HT call my to inform me my delivery is ready for pick up, so his answer for not having my order is garbage, and any half intelligent person would understand that. For such a nice, upscale, expensive area, this grocery store is straight up disrespect to the locals. Can't spend less than $50, no matter what you buy. A solid 50% of the time, the items you are looking for will be gone for no apparent reason. Hot bar and Deli close way before people even get off work, actually I've never seen anyone working in the Deli come to think of it. Still full from a late lunch, I opted to walk the 2 blocks from my hotel to Harris Teeter and find something appealing from their salad bar. This place is well lighted and inviting. Friendly helpful staff in each department I visited. With well stocked and clean items. I also found some Peach and Passion fruit juice in their juice refrigeration area. Totten, a friend hooked my up with a weekend skyline view at the Sheraton across the street. Wearing for layers, I went down to Harris Teeter for Sun Chips, Mentos, water and a bottle of wine. The lines were hideously long, but they moved right along. The prices seemed pretty steep, but maybe it's because I was visiting from Houston and geography had something to do with it (economic mumbo jumbo). Either which way, it was a pleasant experience. Place is a scam and disgusting. There's a huge rat burrow outside the front door, there's never any hand baskets (only carts), prices keep climbing, and no one works here. This place is an absolute scam. Everytime I come here for less than 8-10 items, I drop at least $50. Additionally, no one is EVER at the registers - it's self-service checkout only and half of the machines are always broken. 0 stars if I could!! read more

While this Harris teeter is normally stocked well with items, do NOT utilize their express pick up option. Literally every time I use it they mess something up. This time the personal shopper told me she couldn't find certain produce items like green onion, tomatoes and ginger. I parked my car and went in to grab some Truly because I forgot to order it and sure enough everything the personal shopper said she couldn't find, was RIGHT THERE! But the worst was the shopper clearly didn't even look to see if the strawberries were good bc I could look right at it and see numerous moldy strawberries. I keep saying it's just a one off situation but it's not and I will no longer use this Harris Teeter for express shopping. They need to train their "personal shoppers" a little bit better! read more

It's a week before Chrome and you'd expect most of what you want/ need to be few. There is plenty of the major items and dessert ingredients. I walked over here for lunch and it's situated about 4 blocks from my office. My initial thought was to purchase one of those prepared delis sandwiches. I've had their Italian and turkey 8" sub sandwiches from here before, and their food has always been delicious. At right around 12 noon they apparently had not yet prepared any sandwiches for the day. While I was around the deli section I did notice several prepared pizzas, and they looked too delicious to pass up today. Allen from the pizza section provided me with exceptional service today, and it was apparent that he was mighty proud of the pizzas that he prepared personally. He described the supreme pizza and it sounded like something that my stomach was waiting for! He went out of his way and heated up 2 of the supreme pizza slices and then boxed them up for me. I took them to my office, and I actually had not had pizza that delicious inquire some time! read more

This is one of the sorriest grocery stores Ive ever been too. For the last month or so this place has no hand baskets and around 10 total big shopping carts. You have to use your own bags or cart if you expect to do any real shopping here. When I asked about the basket situation they didn't have a response other than people just take them. As for the food produce is pretty bad, I see a lot of moldy produce and prices on the shelves are not always the same as when you go to the cashier. I only go here if I have a small amount of items to get or don't want to drive but its pointless to come here unless you just need 1-2 items with the basket/cart situation. I go to this Harris Teeter because it's close to work and I can grab groceries before heading home. In general, I'm a big fan of Harris Teeters, but this location is slowly disappointing me. The employee's at this HT are overall friendly and helpful, there are no complaints regarding. On three separate occasions, I have either accidently grabbed something or purchased something that was expired. Bought some crackers, thought they tasted stale to realize it was 4 months past it's best by date. Grabbed some baby yogurt, best by date was almost a month passed. Lastly, purchased some HT Jam, still sealed but when I got home, there was already mold growing on the surface. Will still likely go to this location, but will be closely examining the dates of everything I get now. read more

Yelp removed my review because they said it wasn't about my "direct first-hand experience." To be clear, this review is about my direct first-hand experience speaking with a literal manager at the store, so it is about my own, direct, first-hand experience as a (now former) customer at this location. The beginning is for context. Again, this review is about my first-hand direct experience as a customer speaking with the Asst. Manager, Lydia. My roommate, who is Black, walked into this store, our local Harris Teeter, yesterday wearing a "Black Lives Matter" shirt. An employee walked up to him (breaking their social distancing rule) and got in his face and said "No. All lives matter." My roommate was obviously upset and left the store. He came home and felt like he couldn't have a productive conversation with someone there. I called on his behalf and spoke with an Assistant Manager, Lydia, who apologized and said it was against store policy to make comments like that to customers. She then went on to tell me that at Harris Teeter, they believe Black lives matter AND that all lives matter. She told me she'd talk with the employee and give me a call back. She called me back less than 10 minutes later to say she talked with the employee and he didn't mean to be rude, he was just saying that all lives matter, not just Black lives. I pointed out to Lydia that this was literally the issue, because telling a Black man in a Black lives matter shirt that "all lives matter" is already super inappropriate, and also the fact that it was a random employee at a store he was shopping at that got in his face to tell him this was an added layer of unprofessionalism. Lydia decided we should agree to disagree. The next day, a friend called the store to express concern and was told that the situation was "handled," despite the fact no one has reached out since Lydia decided we had a difference in opinion on whether employees should be able to break social distancing to spout rhetoric on current racial issues towards Black customers minding their own business. On their corporate Facebook page last Friday, they made a post about how Harris Teeter "sees" and "stands with" their Black shoppers/community members. And apparently they also don't care if their employees break social distancing to shout their p beliefs at customers. Oh, and also worth mentioning, Lydia pontificated that it might have been a "challenged" employee that works there during the first call, because apparently ableism is also cool at this store. Again, this was my direct, first-hand experience as a customer speaking with their manager. They can flag it all they want, but it happened to me and they need to answer for this. read more

Nice store and layout, wide aisles. But they need more cashiers, or train the ones they have better. It should not take 15 minutes to check out. Additionally some confusion by the cashiers on what the lights mean - typically an on light mean the lane is open. They appeared to be set randomly. In light of the recent events, I was shocked to read the way an employee behaved to an African American customer in the store by saying that it's not "black lives matter" it's "all lives matter" and we all know that in that response lies the problem. Won't be shopping here till the manager and employees educate themselves better and treat people better. A friend visited wearing a Black Lives Matter shirt and an employee violated social distancing to approach him and say, "No, all lives matter." Ultimately, management explained that the employee didn't mean to be rude but felt it was important to say that other lives matter too. When presented with the argument that the employee did not need to approach a customer with this, the manager said they'd have to agree to disagree. So. Employees harass customers at this location, with management's blessing. Do not give them your money. read more

This Harris Teeter is located in OT Alexandria, on the corner of Asaph and Madison. The store seems to be more compact, but the produce is fresh and other grocery items are well-stocked. There are some limited street parking, but there is a garage around the back, attached to the store. I had to stop by to pick up some drinks for a party, and they had a good variety of brands, some being on sale by using your VIC card. The cashiers are super friendly and pretty quick in the check-out lines. I find it convenient that this place is open 24 hours! One don't have to age or like any of that, but while working, keep your opinions on the matter to yourself. I will not shop there. This store is grossly understaffed. I went there at 5:20pm tonight and only 3 cashiers were open and the self check out line went down an aisle and around a corner. There were at least 8 to 10 people in each line (with cashiers). I went to customer service and nicely asked if they had any more cashiers and the woman "barked" NO. Shame on HT. This store is in a demographically desirable neighborhood and whoever manages this store needs to get on point and hire more staff. People were totally frustrated and it was PAINFUL. To stand in a checkout lane for 15 minutes is rediculous. I rarely write reviews but felt I had to because I hope someone from HT corporate reads this and takes action. I've never been to a Harris Teeter before, but have heard it's really expensive and generally not worth it. And the die hard Harris Teeter fans praise this store for everything. I didn't know what to expect coming in, but I can certainly say I wasn't disappointed. With a location so close to Trader Joes, I was initially wondering how the competition would be. As much as I love TJs, I may have to frequent HT more. It is a HUGE store compared to the TJs, with greater selection on pretty much everything. Plus, they have a hot food area. (I got the pizza from there, and it wasn't worth the price. The cheese was rubbery and the sauce was too sweet. Well, it's not a pizza place so I can't dock them any stars of that.) There is a private lot for the HT. Not to mention it's free. Without validation. Yay! Plus, it's open 24 hours! And very well lit. Because it's a new location, it was obviously very clean. Everything was organized neatly and put in its exact location for the grand opening. The employees were all very professional despite it being their first day. I'm sure they had a soft opening to practice. They did seem a little hesitant sometimes, but they did their jobs well... A lot better than some people who've been at it for years. They kept pushing us to sign up for a VIC card (loyalty card) but the line was too long. Perhaps next time. :) As with any grocery store, you're going to find some things that are well priced and other things that are way too expensive. This is no exception. I can't lie. I love Harris Teeter. It makes me want to move back to the DMV. Especially just to be local to this location! The people were super nice, and the produce and seafood selection was better than most supermarkets we typically go to in Temple Hills, MD. I signed up for a VIC card. Yes, the gang is all here. A new Harris Teeter brings out all the hungry foodies from near and far. They've got wine, veggies standing at attention for your inspection, and a pretty nice food court. They have all the food favorites that I have grown to love at just about any other Harris Teeter, pizza and cheese...Oh, yes, pizza and cheese. This is one of the biggest Harris Teeter that I have ever been in, and it is easy to imagine an afternoon lost among isles of exotic produce. However, for now, perhaps this store is too big. I have to admit that I was a little overwhelmed upon my first visit, because there was just so much stuff. For a moment, I felt as if I was experiencing my own version of Stendhal Syndrome, the condition where one faints or foes into a trance when confronted with great art,,,Well, I guess a mountain of cheese and fresh seafood is a masterpiece in its own right, so I don't really feel so bad becoming entranced by Harris Teeter's own Produce Mona Lisa or Sistine Chapel of Cheese....I just hope its tourist-like crowds thin out in coming months. read more

It is an amazing grocery store overall, due to the following reasons: 1. Good discount 2. Giant quantity per unit for meat and fruit 3. Friendly staff members 4. A lot of different variety that you could choose from. 5. No long lines in the cashiers. 6 open until quite late during the night and open very early in the morning. Overall, I highly recommend this location. As a matter of fact, some of the fresh-produce it is selling has a price tag that is lower than costco, and I think it is really a good deal, maybe the best deal you can find in the area. I bought a lot of stuffs from this location. There has been only one occasion that the quality of the food (fruit) had some issue. But the problem was nicely resolved and the manager offered an exchange for the problematic item. A large grocery store north of the Old Town area, this is located close to our stay at the Crown Plaza hotel, which made it very useful. Large underground garage (though poor directions to get there from the road). Inside, specials up front, then groceries, hot food/bakery, meat & snacks, plenty of freezers & milk in the far back, and upfront some self-serve registers and regular register lanes. Various specials all over the store help on the selling point and the Red Box and more are in the lobby. Carts lock when they leave the door, so if you have a car, you better just carry out the bags to it. Selection, good, prices comparable to the NJ grocery stores in Jersey City, and while in the middle of a quiet neighborhood at night, still good. Only downside - the cut fruit was half bad when we opened it - unfortunately not close enough to return it as we were traveling, but the rest of the snacks, oranges, and bread, were pretty reasonable and in good shape. read more

I made a few trips to this Harris Teeter over Valentine's day weekend while I was in town for a wedding. The hotel I stayed at was right across the street so it was very convenient. This Harris Teeter was slightly different than my local one in a good way. I was jealous of the breakfast buffet and the omelette station because we don't have at the one I go to. Two mornings in a row i got up and went to the window where the omelette stations were being made and got an omelette with everythinggggg on it. I actually got about 4 different ones made for the folks back at the hotel so it took some time to make. The lady making the omelettes seemed to struggle a bit at first but got the hang of it on the 2nd one. Some of them were broken up when she tried to move then into the box but I didnt mind. This is my second time at this location, the self checkout line both times have been towards the back of the store. How can you only have 2 of the many self checkout kiosks open. What makes matters worse is only 2 regular lines are open as well. There were many employees standing around chatting. I have a limited lunch break and it's very upsetting have to wait in 10 minute plus lines for 3 items. Not accepting Apple Pay is also a huge downside read more

This review is for online shopping. The Old Town Alexandria, VA Harris Teeter has the least caring people working for online shopping. The produce is never put in a plastic bag, it is just put anywhere loose on the paper bag, under other items, with boxes of crackers or cereal getting the boxes wet. There is absolutely NO CARE when picking produce for the clients, cilantro is chosen when you ordered parsley, 1/3 of the box of strawberries is rotten (completely visibly rotten), kiwi fruit is mushed because it was put under yucca. I have called many times to complain and it does not make any difference. It is plain unacceptable the lack of care. read more
