This is my favorite grocery store. When they continue to build big and fancy grocery stores in old town (aka Harris Teeter) I have stayed loyal to this particular Safeway. This store is small so the selection is limited but that keeps me shopping on a budget. This store makes you feel like you're living in a small town when I continue to see the same cashiers from day to day. Small town in a big city is no small feat. May be due to the location- right in the middle of a friendly neighborhood. Thankful to find a place with no tourists or visitors when trying to run a quick errand. Terrible selection of food, store is some compacted they two average size people feels crowded in an aisle. Before even walking in there was a guy pissing on the building. Then he went in to shop. While I'm sure the store doesn't condone such behavior he still draws a picture for someone that is only in town for a few days. If you are actually looking for a grocery store in this area do yourself a favor and go to Balducci's. That place is x better in all ways. read more

Despite sign stating no dogs but service dogs per law, customers bring their dogs inside of store. One I saw was a frou-frou dog in a baby or doll carriage obviously not a service animal being pushed around. No vest, nada. Staff stated they're not allowed to tell customers that dogs are not allowed. Recently a dog pooped on the floor. I love dogs but common sense dictates not a good idea having them around food for obvious health and sanitary reasons. Besides some people are allergic to dogs. Couple with dog in buggy drove by car to Safeway and could have left dog in car. Weather was not too hot or too cold. I will shop elsewhere that abides by the law. read more

Still smiling! Had actually forgotten about this Safeway. It is a lot smaller than most of their locations, but I like this. Old Town Alexandria is a tight area. This grocery store might not have what larger ones do, but I find it convenient when fishing the Potomac close by. I do think this is a nice one. Was happy to get some shrimp for bait. Also the Caesar salad was quite tasty! You'll find this store clean and organized. Safeway can't compete price wise with Aldi, Lidl, or Wegmans. Yet at this location, I did appreciate the very good customer service. I'll be back as soon as the weather warms up. If in the area this is a decent grocery store. read more

Customer service with the women here are awful. Especially the girl at the cashier with 6 inch nails and king braids. The first time she wouldn't help me figure out where the scanner was in the app. She didn't know but don't work here? Aren't you supposed to know where the scanner is in the app. Needles to say I didn't get my discounted price. Today, I said hi can you help me? She said HI I'm fine. Well I didn't ask her how she was doing since she was already giving up negative energy - but she didn't like my greeting. Let me get this straight unless I greet you the way you want me to never mind you don't greet me and you work there! The other women in the produce can't speak when greeted. This location of Safeway is outside of Old Town Alexandria and a short walk to many restaurants and shops. It's an older Safeway, but there's a parking lot, good service, and well-stocked aisles usually. read more

I realize that some reviewers have mentioned that this store is a bit small, but I actually like it. This Safeway has a charming layout, and since its parking lot isn't that large, the checkout lines are usually pretty short. It has all the basics, and its size harkens back to something out of Mayberry. The only thing missing from this nostalgic gem is Aunt Bee and Barney Fife. read more

This safeway is the best one I've been to. I went there just to shop and learned that people who work here are the best. I had just moved to the area and stopped by to grab a few things. Absent-mindedly, I left my wallet in one of the carts. I called the grocery store and the manager answered using my name and said it was in the safe. I returned to the grocery store to find all the money and credit cards not a thing had been touched. When asked if I could tip them the manager asked for a good review. I live in the neighborhood so I am pretty much a frequent flyer at this Safeway. Most of the time I go for grocery items. But often I find myself popping in after a day of work to check in on the soap-opera that is the staff. If you think catching 50% off Starbucks coffee packages or a clearance package of Filet Mignon for $5 is a deal...wait until you go to check out. There's a certain cashier with more drama for your mama. Forget Netflix or DVR. Watching the reaction of the snooty Old Town clientle to the conversations between cashiers is phenomenal. read more

Went to the Safeway to buy some breakfast food. Went in and a gentleman that was stocking asked if I needed help finding something. I said no, but thank you, went around the store and couldn't find an item so I went back to the same guy. His name was (Tremayne). He was very nice and helpful. He helped me find what I was looking for and he was very quick at knowing the area of where it was. I will definitely go back shopping here because of my pleasant experience with Tremayne. He was awesome, great customer service!!! 100%,A+!!! Then I was ready for check out and a line piled up in front of me, the cashier (Wanda) called Tremayne for back up, he came up jumped on the other cashier area and start checking people out, the line started moving quicker and I was is in (Wanda's) line, she was nice too. She got me through quick and easy and I was ready to go. This Safeway is a Awesome grocery store, might be small, but it's big in other areas such as Teamwork, Respect, and so much more! I'm not sure what the deal is with Safeways on the East coast. In a word, they're crap. The Old Town Safeway is no exception. Don't get me wrong, this particular Safeway is great for buying things of the packaged variety, like cereal, olive oil, condiments. But as far as freshness goes, I stopped giving Safeway the benefit of the doubt a long time ago. Produce that looks fresh when you buy it (which is a rarity) spoils within two days. The meat selection is dicey. The only somewhat perishable food item I am ALMOST comfortable with buying from this Safeway is milk. I guess it's not such a bad thing that said items aren't the best since it encourages me to buy at farmer's markets and help our local growers out! One good thing about the Old Town Safeway is that the staff is very pleasant. The line at the register tends to get a bit long at times, but when the cashier greets you with a smile and a friendly hello, you can only be ticked off for a minute or two. The sales they have are good too. Maybe they changed the rules since Justin S's review, because I am able to use the bf's club card right after him every time we shop there. Props to this Safeway during the 2010 "Snowpocolypse." I went during the thick of it for milk and eggs and although they were low in such items, they had them. This is a store worthy of managerial attention. I pull into the store and two employees wearing black Safeway hats yell from through the rolled down window of a black Infiniti SUV that the store is CLOSED as my car parks along side. I look and see the front door of the store propped open by a giant card board box of watermelons. Instead of arguing with these two employees, I say thank-you very much and proceed to shift my car into drive without shutting off my engine to drive to a much further to purchase some less fresh tomatoes at Wal-Mart because I know it will be open and the employees will not be telling me the store is closed (and certainly not while relaxing in an SUV more luxurious than my mid-compact car). I shopped at this store before after receiving a $50 coupon. Also the selection of what I want to buy is not there as the shape of the store is very different from other Safeways. I guess my recent experience is similar except the block to entering the store was outside. read more

Worst grocery store ever! Don't shop here worst customer service ever! When we checked out, we noticed that the prices were twice what they were marked, but were told that we didn't have have a loyalty card and they had already rung the order through, so we had to return everything at customer service. Which took forever because when you return items they automatically take off the loyalty card discount!!!! Talk about screwing over your customers!!!!!! read more

All of the variety, better prices than Giant. Best of the lowest tier grocery stores. This place is not Trader Joes, Harris Teeter or Wegmans, but for everyday stuff, Safeway really has the best selection and the best (cleanest - cleanliness seems to be an issue at Giant Stores I've been to) environment to shop in. Their meats are of much better quality than Giant, and selection - while not as large, at least at this Safeway (the one on Van Dorn is huge) is good even late in the day or a busy weekend. "Rancher Select" steaks are really good - lean, but with enough fat to barbecue up well with some flavor. Beers and malt beverages are also available in variety, unlike Giant. If Giant is across the street and Safeway across town, go across town, it's worth it. read more

First off a general comment, the gentleman that stock the inventory are just flat out unpleasant. Don't think a smile and hello is too much to ask, especially when you engage them. Second, this a.m. finally wanted to give the deli breakfast sandwiches a chance so when I approached to order the employee behind the counter said I had to wait because he had to fill out paper work and "put in an order in" what ever that meant. Very frustrated because I was late for work and hungry. I could have complained, but I waited 5 min in front of him as he filed through his paperwork and I just left. BRUTAL. read more

It's okay. But. . . it's annoying that the prices displayed rarely match at the cash register. We have noticed price discrepancies (i.e., overcharging) so many times that we've lost count. We no longer trust the store and must check the receipt every time, just to be sure they're not trying to charge us extra. Who knows how many times people are and have been overcharged and how many hundreds or thousands that amounts to on an annual basis? Sure we always get our money back after pointing out how we were overcharged, but it's annoying and time consuming. Also, sometimes, on a few occasions you have to deal with a few RUDE and unprofessional cashiers who can't even be bothered to apologize for their inability to keep track of their own prices. read more

Current Review: I've noticed significant improvements to this Safeway's selection of goods. The store recently got a minor interior overhaul as well. It'd be great if they'd do away with that freakin' club card, but for now I'm just happy I can buy some palatable tortellini here. Old Review: (2 stars) This Safeway makes me sad. The corporate guys at Safeway have no idea how to run a community grocery store... this store isn't a suburban destination, it's a stop on the way home. If you're walking, you can often forget the sales, as you'll be required to buy 48 cans of soda to get the good price, or 5 jars of tomatoes, or whatever else... the sale prices usually only count if you buy in bulk. You'll need a discount card too. I tried to lend mine to a lady in front of me one day and they told us "that's not allowed". Way to chase away customers. If you don't lie about your address when you fill out the form for the discount card expect to get more junk mail... that's one of the "rewards" too. Add a coupe de grace by noticing how frequently this store is out of whatever staple is on sale. $3.99 chicken? no. They ran out 4 days ago. They've got some just-about-to-expire expensive stuff for $7.99 per lb though... Cream? No... we don't have that this week. Sorry. If you want expired items, feel free to go here. As I was checking out I noticed the item I had was expired. I asked the cashier if she wanted me to check if there was another or if an associate would grab another ( non-expired) item. She asked if I didn't mind- it took me less than 2 min, I had a total of 3 items with me. Soon as I got back she was taking the people behind me who had a cart full!!! Oh and all the jars I could find were expired. I brought them over in case anyone else picked it up. Will not be back. read more

This is a pretty decent small supermarket. The clientele are drawn from people in the neighborhood, who I think would do most of their shopping there if there were: 1. A better selection of 'fresh' fruits and vegetable with a larger fraction of the store devoted to these items 2. A fish and meat counter; it's OK if it's small. Perhaps some 'high-end' prepared foods. 3. More organic food choices The cashiers and staff are very friendly, and there is a reasonable sized parking lot. The beer & wine selection is excellent, as are prices, and they frequently run specials that are competitive with any supermarket in the DC metro area read more

I made a few deliveries to this Safeway. It is small but that makes it unique in this neighborhood. I made one delivery and proceeded to drive the 2 hours in traffic back home when I realized I left my wallet there. Damn bottle of salad dressing on clearance! Then I realized I had taken out 250 bucks to pay the hotel. I call the store and they have it in the safe. I get there and the cash is still there. Not many places in this area that won't pocket that money but Safeway employees were honest. read more

This place is great! Sure, it doesn't have the biggest selection of products, but it's a small community grocery, not a strip mall supermarket. The staff here is awesome, they are super pleasant and always willing to help find things. I broke a bottle once after paying, and they let me grab a new one off the shelf without charge. One time I forgot my club card and I would have saved about $20 -- great deals on wine here : ) -- I brought the receipt back the next day with my card and they gave me cash. I'm so glad this is the grocery near my house. read more

I continue to find some significantly expired items on the shelves here. I'm beginning suspect that other Safeways use this store to unload their expired inventory. I come here because it is a convenient walk from my place, but always double check the expiration dates. read more
