I love Rustic Bakery and their salads but this location is insane. I've never seen such a long line for lunch at 1:30 on a Friday. It was out the door and so packed you could barely walk. They were out of so many items it was very disappointing. Our drinks weren't put out until our food was ready and service wasn't friendly or even helpful. While I love the location in Novato I will be avoiding this location in the future. read more

Absolutely fantastic food and location. I ate here with a few of my friends on a Sunday afternoon right at peak lunch time and we were still able to get our food fast and find a table. The outdoor seating options are great to enjoy the beautiful California weather also. I ended up going with the shrimp salad as well as stocking up on a few pastries. The shrimp salad was delicious. It wasnt overly heavy in flavor either so made it perfect for an afternoon meal. Service was about a 3 out of 5 but thats more because the girl spoke such horrible english that I had to ask her to repeat herself about 5 times on everything. read more

Been coming to Rustic Bakery for years. Love all the organic items - salads, soups, pastries, and other breakfast items. Favorites include chicken caesar with capers and pine nuts, buttery croissants, and banana muffin. Also, enjoy all their seasonal items - holiday cookies, candies, etc. Great little gifts you can give people. Can't forget about the egg salad sandwich. Perfect egg salad with not a lot of mayonnaise (just the way I like it). I usually add avocado and tomato and get it on the sea salt facaccia roll. Beat the lines by ordering ahead of time on their app. You can even select when you want the order ready (specific time 11:15 am). I am always rushed in the morning, so sometimes I place my order the night before. Then I just swing by on my way to work and it is ready and waiting for me. Also, super easy to add or remove items from your order -- no mayo, add avocado, etc. Probably frequent the Larkspur Landing (aka the Mart) location the most. I have gotten to know Jennifer the manager over the years, and she is always friendly. She will take the time to to say hello, and normally will knowledge me by name. All the rest of the staff do a great job too. I don't know their names, but thanks for all their help and good food! They make my almond milk lattes quickly too. Sitting in this off the beaten path location, the original Rustic Bakery, one would hardly ever know that it's off the beaten path. Just look at that line, stretching to the door on a Sunday past 1 p.m. What do they think this is, Tartine? Welcome to Marin's version of San Francisco's Tartine. No, they're not related but they both produce such excellent baked goods that they might as well be. If all I cared about were baked goods I'd pit them toe to toe with Tartine then declare a tie. We all win. You truly could do no better than a croissant from Rustic Bakery. You could only wind up with a draw. But then there's the other part of the menu, the soups and salads and sandwiches (and breakfast fare). What comes to mind here are the words fresh and light. Like the way Chez Panisse fare was first described, each flavor here stands on its own. You can tell they've begun with the best ingredients, nothing is masked or covered up. It's all just the best of what it is, lightly mixed with the best of something else, to produce flavors that Marin-ites adore. As I sat enjoying my Roasted Chicken Caesar Salad ($11.25) l admired the heavy, oversized ceramic bowl in which it was served. Lovely presentation. The salad though, seemed a bit one-note and I was sorry to find none of the toasted pine nuts or capers of which the menu spoke. The lemon-anchovy dressing also seemed to be missing the latter ingredient, which would have really benefited the salad as a whole. The flavors that were there - the grated parmesan, fresh croutons, roast chicken, romaine, and the lemony dressing - simply didn't pack enough of a flavor punch on their own. A Rustic Chop Salad ($11.50) ordered by my dining companion, had more to love with nothing missing: romaine, tomatoes, hard-cooked eggs, bacon and scallions, champagne vinaigrette, Point Reyes blue cheese crumbles. As the parent in me would say, "he made all gone". Salads are served with 3 each of the cracker-bread for which Rustic Bakery is known. Hard and crunchy, they're somewhat of an acquired taste but it's fine: I've acquired it. Still though, neither of us felt totally sated by this light, fresh fare. A small bakery item was required and why not? We were probably saving room for that right from the start. Rustic Bakery is a fabulous place for baked goods and a very good place for salads, sandwiches, and breakfast items. Best Cobb Salad I've had in ages. For just $10 I was swimming in a bowl of fresh lettuce, tomatoes, hard-boiled egg, bacon bites, blue cheese, with lemon vinaigrette. I barely finished half of it - this thing was HUGE! Beautiful presentation, too (with the dressing on the side). My lunch companion ordered the 1/2 soup 1/2 grilled cheese sandwich special (also $9.95). Her artichoke soup was really a sight to behold. The artichoke and cream had a lovely pattern on top (almost like a gourmet cafe latte). For dessert, we split one of their cinnamon pastry rolls. I'm normally not a sweet tooth kind of guy. I promised my friend that I would only have a bite. And sure enough, I was still nibbling on the pastry minutes later. This thing was like sugary crack. So good! A few things to know before you go... this place is always packed. As a result, parking can be a challenge. Also, you may have to wait a few minutes for a table to open up. It might be best to go in the middle of the afternoon after the lunch crowd has died down. I'm looking forward to returning soon to try some of their other lunch specials. All the sandwiches and salads looked very appetizing and were reasonably priced. I've also heard great things about their coffee. I stated in my first review that the pastries are as good as what you'll find in Paris. Well we just returned from Paris, and I reiterate that assertion. And it's not only the croissants; we tried lots of different pastries from a handful of patisseries and bakeries and Paris, and a week after we got home we went to Rustic to compare. And what we had was just as good as what we had in Paris, including the place in the Latin Quarter we walked for 20 minutes to find because we heard they had the best croissants in Paris. Yes, Rustic is even better than that gem. I feel fortunate to have Rustic so close to home, and after visiting Paris I will no longer be taking Rustic for granted! read more

Wow, what a find! This cafe/bakery is easy to overlook unless you live in the immediate neighborhood. I just discovered it a week ago and have already visited three times - twice for lunch and once for morning coffee and pastry. The products have screamed quality every time. And, here's the real kicker - the prices are very reasonable when you consider the quality and central Marin location. Rustic's flatbreads are their signature product. These crisp pieces of bread come in varieties such as sweet onion & creme fraiche, kalamata olive, and wild mushroom & white truffle. Each time I visited, three different kinds were out to sample along with cubes of cheese. Let's just say they take cheese and crackers to the next level. For lunch, about six different sandwiches/soups are listed on the blackboard. I've tried the chicken salad and the salami/cheese sandwich and was impressed with the quality and flavor of both. If you're in the area and looking to have a nice sandwich for lunch, I'd recommend Rustic over nearby Left Bank or Ward Street Cafe. While the ambiance might not be the same, the tastiness and prices are way better. The ham & cheese croissant, shortbread cookies, and coffee were similarly outstanding. Rustic is located in a nondescript shopping center, but they've done a nice job sprucing up the inside with art work and the like. There are about five counter seats and five small bar-style tables. Slightly pricey, but plentiful, high-quality and luxurious food is where it's at with Rustic Bakery, go grab a bite or some bread soon. I came in on a nice spring day with my mom for a late lunch and it was kinda packed. We were able to grab a table after a brief wait to make our orders. The counter is small, well the entire place is tiny, so the line is kinda awkward. There is a display behind glass up front where you can see all the varied baked goods from breads to pastries. They write up the daily specials on a board and it had a bunch of enticing meals on tap. Service was friendly, if harried because of the crowds. I had a sando with very crisp, toasted bread. It came with avocado, bacon (last of the bacon for the day) and frilly lettuces. If not for being overly toasted, it would probably have hit the spot a little better, but you can't knock the flavor of their very fresh ingredients. My mom had a lovely salad, but I forget the details. She wasn't too impressed with the southern-Marin prices. I grabbed a peanut butter brownie that was so rich and delectable I could only eat two bites at a sitting. I really like this location of Rustic Bakery. I've been going to Rustic Bakery lately to study and the Magnolia location is much more relaxed than the Marin Country Mart. The ambiance is very nice and they have delicious food. It would be great if Rustic Bakery had more veggie options on the menu. I don't eat dairy, and it seems like most items have dairy in them (soups, sandwiches, most salads). I would love Rustic Bakery even more if they added some dairy-free items to the menu. I will give them props for having soy milk though. Overall really nice cafe! Keep in mind that the parking is very limited. read more

The Saigon sandwich (a seasonal special) is to die for and the chicken salad platter is my go-to salad. Organic chicken, apples, toasted almonds mixed with cherry tomatoes, avocado, lettuce, and their delicious dressing - it always hits the spot. Then there's dessert. Every pastry I've tried is better than the last. There's a wide selection from thin oatmeal raisin cookies to almond croissants. They also have some of the best gluten-free, berry scones in the area. I ordered a small size black coffee on the go, and was charged $4.77. When I insisted that I was overcharged they corrected the amount to $3.00. No excuses or nothing. People do make mistakes but this is the second time similar thing happened, and I feel like the personal in this place (including the manager) need to know better how to treat customers in a service business. Visited today ( I stop in 4-5 times a week at one of the other locations) and explained in detail my allergic reaction to the Caesar salad. I have had this salad for many years without an incident. The employee notified me that the croutons are now made with a variety of different breads and many of them have seeds. I then replied that I must have been allergic to some seed and that I cannot have anything with seeds. The employee then went back to tell the preparer. I was shocked when I returned home and opened my order of avocado toast covered with seeds. I had a major attack and was prescribed medication. I am not sure how this could have happened. The pastries and sweets are 5 star, the food is 3 star, so split it down the middle with 4 stars. I'm a ginger freak, and their ginger scone is amazing! The bear claw, chocolate croissant, cookies, crackers, and sticky bun are also delicious. The food is always just OK. It always sounds and looks so good, but when you eat it, it's just ok. I've had plenty of sandwiches, soups and salads here, and it ain't cheap, but just not good enough for the price they are asking. The bread on the sandwiches is superb though. Their coffee is great! Rustic Bakery is simply the most delicious! I am hooked on the Asian Chicken Salad. Sometimes they have discreetly offered 'yesterday's bake'. The Chocolate Cake and the Olive Cake will make a dinner party desert easy and so yummy! I had their Shrimp Bisque for the holidays. The most important though is that this establishment is clean....spotless, with a lovely restroom and plenty of seating. But by far the very most impressive are the people who work here!!! I would give 10 stars if yelp let me!!! Efficient and very friendly, they all welcome customers so warmly and with a smile, and their number system makes you feel special to have your things brought to the table. Their management obviously cares and has trained them perfectly! Please open one in the South Bay. :( My boyfriend and I were visiting for the weekend, staying walking distance from the bakery. We needed a quick bite Sunday morning on our way to Mt. Tam and picked Rustic Bakery based off of convenience. The storefront itself is really cute, plenty of windows to brighten the room. One of the first things you see are these mounds and mounds of baked goods. I ordered a raspberry croissant but they mistakenly gave me a chocolate banana croissant, which was AMAZING. Oh man, best mistake ever. I drool a little every time I think about it.. Anyway, I digress. My bf got an apple cinnamon croissant that he also really enjoyed. Our pastries were so good that we knew we had to come back the next day before heading home. We dined in for our second trip in one weekend. We both ordered the BLAT which was delicious. The orange tomatoes were a nice touch. I normally hate tomatoes but these orange ones were actually, dare I say it, good. I accompanied my meal with a mocha, which wasn't anything that blew my socks off. Unfortunately we were a bit late to the game on visit #2, as most of the pastries were gone already. I've been going to Rustic on Magnolia for years and I do like their food, so I'm giving an extra star to balance out my irritation. But they've messed up my order one too many times and they need to feel the pressure to up their quality control / customer service. About half the time I order food from them, they forget something and I don't realize until I'm back home. The service is really hit or miss... some employees are helpful and friendly, but many are impatient and blatantly unhelpful. When I have tried to reach them by phone about an order, they either don't pick up or I get placed on hold only to be hung up on. I'd be much more excited to come back to this Rustic if they could up their customer service and quality game. read more

Okay, so this is about the most bougie cafe that I have been too in a while. Now don't get me wrong, I LOVE a good bougie cafe, so just be warned. Not sure if it's the people who are there, the menu, or the prices, but this is a cafe hangout for those who live in the area and expect this kind of location. Again, I loved it, but it feels a bit upscale. The place itself had great lighting, the staff was really friendly, and I found a power outlet, which made my day. I am not sure why this bakery has such high ratings but maybe it was just an off day, or an off location... The bad: firstly, the customer service has been sub-par. The staff were not friendly nor knowledgeable about their own menu-- the girl at Larkspur location didn't even know what cold brew was, and its on their menu. The guy at the Novato location seemed annoyed in general, and didn't ever smile or even say hello, or say thanks; he also turned his back and made a half ass attempt to barely hand me my debit card while he wasn't even looking in my direction, it just seemed very unprofessional. The garlic/parmesan soup was terrible I couldn't finish it and wasted six bucks on it. The shrimp/poached egg toast looked really good thru the glass, but didnt have much flavor.. Although it is a little pricey, this place is worth it. All of their ingredients are fresh and delicious! I believe that Rustic Bakery focuses on organic and local ingredients, as well. I love the Updated Caesar Salad (1/2 kale 1/2 romaine) with Chicken. They top the salad with a generous amount of Parmesan cheese and pine nuts. The vinaigrette style dressing is a refreshing take on a Caesar style. I always get an extra container to use for another salad later at home. I wish it was sold by the bottle! It can get busy, so it's a good idea to call your order in (or order online) if you are in a time crunch. I will say that sometimes the employees at the cash register are chatting and dawdling when they could be more alert to helping customers. I don't like to be so critical, because I'm sure they work hard, but I've seen it a few times at this location (Magnolia), and have had my order lost or forgotten as a result. Same old story - never leave reviews until that special someone rubs you just the right amount of wrong. Ok Eric. So just because it's kind of important for businesses to know, especially small neighborhood businesses that rely on local support, here's a quick Google summary on a pertinent piece of the ADA. Americans with Disabilities Act 1990 (ADA) - super important law you might want to familiarize yourself with before you try to assert yourself as a manager. Just to help you out, you're only allowed to ask two questions re: service dogs. (1) is the dog a service animal required because of a disability? and (2) what work or task has the dog been trained to perform? Staff are not allowed to request any documentation for the dog, require that the dog demonstrate its task, or inquire about the nature of the person's disability. The ADA does not require service animals to wear a vest, ID tag, or specific harness. So, to break it down, this is essentially a yes/no question with maybe a "provides emotional support" to satisfy criteria #2. That's all. Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy. You don't get to say "no it's not," and reason it out by saying it's not a service dog because "you would have said that first." Just like...no dude. This takes two seconds to Google, but I got you, no worries. I get it, you didn't feel like Googling it or having us Google it for you. Google can be super annoying, I know. Also, just because you don't know something (and choose not to find out), doesn't mean other people are trying to disrespect you by telling you what they do know...and what you should know because, it's like...a legal issue. But whatevs, right? Beyond that, you can definitely work on softening your landing. I can speak only for my family of 7 and I (who incidentally have supported local businesses for the 33 years we have lived in Kentfield), but if you continue to express yourself the way you do, you're going to alienate a lot of long term customers. And we love us some Rustic. Carol is a very nice lady (as are your coworkers) and you reflect pretty badly on them all. I get that we got heated but you were rude to my ma and that just can't fly.
