I love to run but im portly so Ive definitely felt the discrimination from other stores that I gladly dont give business to. This store, however, NEVER treats me that way which is why I love them so much! I came in on 4.10.14 about an hour before closing with the shoe I love that was used the hell out of and the shoe that made my plantar fasciitis have a nasty flare after 2 miles of use! I was almost immediately asked if my old pair had special inserts (which they did but had completely forgot about!) as the two pairs are brought in were apparently the same with possibly some minor adjustments. Doh! After feeling like a complete goof the helper (I refuse to call him a salesman since this store is always more concerned with the well being of my feet instead of a quick sale) had me walk barefoot so he could suggest a few pairs of shoes. He brought out about 6 different pairs and had me try them with or without the inserts I brought in. After I tried on the last pair he kindly asked if I would be purchasing a shoe or giving the inserts a try in the shoes that caused the flare up. For the past 3 years we've been loyal customers to the Running Room. We love that we can go in, pull up previously purchased shoes via contact phone number, purchase the shoes, then we go on our merry way. While we're always guaranteed a great product the customer service subpar 90% of our visits. Today, we came to purchase the same model as before but it wasn't available. Asked if they have any left from the previous years model & we were told "I dunno I can't search the system you just have to look through clearance". Not once did she offer to help us search, after we grew tired she didn't ask "did you find the shoe?", as we exited the store no "good bye thanks for coming". Nothing! You work retail!! Help the customer! At least greet us as we enter & exit. Haven't been here for years and probably won't be back. I remembered this place as a store that was attentive to customers and will help fit you with the right shoe. It's a Saturday afternoon. I was greeted as I entered the store. That's where the service stopped. Looked at their shoe offering, sat then waited and waited. Why didn't I ASK for help? I shouldn't need to when there are 3 employees standing and socializing at the register and 2 other customers in the store, neither are being helped as far as I could tell. If I have to ask you to sell me something then you don't deserve my business or need to find more attentive staff. Maybe I caught them on an off day/hour? Maybe the manager was on lunch? I don't know what went wrong here especially because I know the other reviews of RR are stellar. But this review is about my personal experience. The staff is so nice and knowledgable. Everyone has a ton of history/background in competitive running. Pretty much all of the staff are still active competitive runners. I think they can close their eyes and still be able to assist you with your questions. Besides that, I pick up my usual race items here: protein bars, energy bars, electrolyte gels and chews... They have a good selection of running shoes and a decent selection of running apparel. A really great place for new runners. Been here several times and the service here is hit or miss. It seems like the main guy who is always working has a family and they are always hanging out in the shop. Sometimes his wife will come out when he calls her to come out from the back, and his son even helped me once. The main guy gives good customer service, but his family members...not so much. I was going to buy a garmin watch, and saw the dad give his teenage son the keys to the case to help me and he walked away. Now if the kid has some semblance of customer service skills, I would have maybe bought it, but he just stood there waiting for me to make a decision and when I asked about a certain color he just told me to get it from the Garmin website. I mean I guess what do you expect from a teenager. I didn't want to make a purchase for hundreds of dollars at this store to support mediocre customer service, so I ended up walking out. Probably won't return here. In the end I am going to buy my Garmin from Runners Route instead. At least they are locally owned, while the Running Room is a chain based in Canada. And they always have great customer service and try to get you to come back. McCully Bike is great for gels as well, plus they carry Maurten. read more

This neighborhood running store is where I got fitted for my first running shoes back in 2007. Subsequently, I ran my first marathon in them and am quite happy with them. Over the years, I have gone back to them for shoe suggestions and advice. They are knowledgable at what they offer. From the beginner runner to the seasoned competitor and to the Marathon Maniac (me), they know it all. While the shoes can get pricey at times, getting yourself fitted for the world of running can make a world of difference. When you know what you can and can't wear, you have the option of shooing around for better deals, but do not discard their advice and experience. I have ran 32 marathons and 8 half marathons so far, with the eventual goal of running all 50 states before I hit 40, hopefully. Noah took care of us. Is he the manager? If not I would suggest owners give him a big fat raise because you are damn lucky to have him! ***Pre COVID-19 Visit*** VERY friendly service. I ran my first marathon last year and was looking for new shoes to break in for the Honolulu Marathon. 26.2 miles in paradise indeed! I ended up purchasing two pairs and the lady who assisted me was super nice and helpful. She too said that she was going to run the marathon. They have a great selection of running gear, healthy bars, chews and the running events are posted by the main entrance. I rarely review anymore but had to leave my props for Running Room! Their employees were so helpful and kind. This was my first time going into a speciality running store and I learned so much and didn't feel intimidated at all. I have a hard time finding shoes because I have custom orthotics. I described what I was looking for and the problem with the last pair of shoes I bought and the worker brought out multiple pairs to try on. She also assessed my running stride. The first pair she brought out was actually THE pair. Unfortunately they didn't have them in my size, but they took down my info in case they ever bring that size in stock. I ended up ordering online for the same price as the store. I sooo wish I could have purchased from Running Room instead, but I'm also leaving for the mainland soon so it just didn't work out. Other than finding the right shoe, I also found the explanations of running and running shoe theory very helpful. The owner who was giving the full explanation to another customer (I was a very willing bystander!) obviously knows tons about running and looks like a very well-seasoned runner himself. Overall awesome experience. I spent forever there and never felt rushed. And though I personally felt terrible about not leaving with a pair, I didn't feel judged at all by the workers. Lastly I didn't check out the sale section too extensively but there were also a good number of shoes per size on sale. As a relatively new runner with a few extra pounds clinging to my waist, I was a bit nervous about going into a running store. But I decided it was time to stop storing my hotel key in my jog bra during my workouts (gross, I know) so when I passed by this place I decided to stop and see if they had any solutions for storing my stuff while running. I walked in prepared to feel totally intimidated and ridiculed. Immediately two female employees walked up to help me. They were incredibly friendly and, most importantly, they didn't laugh in my face when I told them I was training for a half marathon. They were super helpful and I ended up buying a comfy Flip Belt which I now love. If I was in Hawaii for longer than a few weeks for work, I'd definitely be dropping more cash here on running gear. Such a pleasant experience here! Hubby and I were in Waikiki to support our friend who was running in the Honolulu Marathon. The day after the race, we decided to walk to Leonard's for some malasadas and ran across Running Room. Having witnessed all those amazing runners the day before, hubby was so inspired to run another marathon. We went into the store and was greeted by two of the gentlemen working there. One of them came over and asked if we needed help with anything. We went in just to browse but ended up spending more than 30 mins trying on different shoes, making comparisons, and conversing with the gentleman that was helping us. He was very knowledgeable on the different shoes and was so patient in answering all the questions; he even gave us tips. They were having a sale on tons of shoes that day, but unfortunately, they didn't have the size of the one hubby wanted so we walked out empty handed. Me before the running room: Pink running shoes? Yes please! Me after the running room: Are those the right type of shoes to train for a half marathon in? Before becoming quite serious about running, I though I knew my running shoe size (5) and what type of running shoe I needed (cute). Boy was I wrong! So my good friend and running teammate Zara yelled at me "You need to get new running shoes! And the RIGHT running shoes!" So off to The Running Room I went! First off, there is a lot of parking. Yay! Second of all, all of the employees are so helpful and friendly. They knew so much about running it was amazing! Gaston was so great and watched me run a couple of times and gave me different types of shoes to run in to fix my running problems. It was awesome! I've never had this type of customer service before! Besides running shoes, The Running Room also has lots of running gear, energy bars, gels, water bottles, etc. They have everything you need for whatever race you may be training for! During my trip to the running room I learned that you usually need a whole size bigger than what you would normally wear in a sandal type shoe and what type of running shoe I should be training in. And a whole size bigger doesn't mean a whole inch bigger like most people think. Gaston filled my head with so much cool and helpful info I felt like I just passed Running Room 101! Now that I'm training for a half marathon, I feel confident that I can train well knowing I'm in the correct shoe. I can't thank Gaston and The Running Room enough! I walked in feeling discouraged because SO MANY other big shoe stores have such a small selection for good quality running shoes. Noah was super kind and just AWESOME and took the time to actually assess my shoe, ask how I run, etc. and was able to make recommendations as to which shoes would best suit my feet and my gait. We figured out that the shoes I was already running in were great but not necessary for my gait. I actually found a pair of great running shoes in the sale section! Noah wasn't super pushy on any 1 shoe model and I really appreciated that, as I've had bad experiences at other stores with that. I was able to take the shoes on a test run to get a better feeling for them, and that was what really sold me on the shoes I bought. I recently started running in my 8 month old shoes I received as a gift and ended up with a stress injury as diagnosed by a podiatrist who recommended new shoes. After some research on the Internet I found that there's more to running shoes than just cushion, weight, style and color. I found the shoes I had were for overpronators. I had no idea if I was one so I decided to seek a professional opinion. Long story short, George at The Running Room measured my feet and patiently analyzed my stride by watching me walk barefoot and run in some shoes. He brought me about 7 different pairs to try and they even let me run outside in them. I also found out my foot was slightly smaller and wider than I thought. I had normal pronation so my current shoes were too big and not right for my motion mechanics. I ended up with a nice pair of really comfortable shoes that were less than I usually spend on shoes. They didn't try to oversell me more than I needed. Go see these guys at The Running Room and give them your business because you might save a couple of bucks online but then who will be there to help newbies like me if they went out of business? I'm not a runner. I'm a very active person, but running? nope not for me. However, any active person has to have a pair of running shoes. At some point you will have to run. and Active people know, your equipment contributes to the injuries you might avoid. However, I was still wearing running shoes I bought 4 years ago! I couldn't understand why I was getting major shin splints. This is why I found running room. Running room is off of Kapahulu avenue. They have a small dedicated parking lot. If you've ever tried to park on the street on Kapahulu, you know that this is a very big deal. I might never have discovered this place if I couldn't park. You sit in the shoe area and wait for a sales person. I was looking for casual running shoes. Then they get you to stand up and walk towards them. They judge your stride and how your foot moves when you step. Based on this knowledge, they'll bring out around 3 pairs. You try on each pair of shoes, but you don't just walk in them, you run! They have a sign by the back door for the beginning of your tiny track. You turn left around the corner and follow the arrows as you run around the store back through the front door. You can run as many laps as you want for all the shoes they bring out. They will continue to do this until you find the perfect pair for you. I fell in love with my asics and received an awesome discount because they were a pair from last season. Their bread and butter lies in the shoes. They have other equipment there, including clothing, but the selection isn't large enough to brave the possibility of no parking to get there. I wouldn't go anywhere else for running shoes, though. You just can't beat personalized service. read more

The Running Room should be your first stop when finding new running shoes. If you're a new runner, the workers will analyze your gait and give you their recommendation on which shoes to try. Then you're free to go outside for a test run. I found my ultimate running shoe here for my flat feet- the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 11. With those shoes, running felt easy, free, and actually (le gasp) enjoyable for the first time in my life. Unfortunately the newer editions just haven't done it for me, and that is why I am so grateful for their amazing return policy! Within 30 days after purchase, if you determine your new shoes aren't working out for you, they will refund your money (minus a 20% restocking fee if the shoes are too worn/dirty). I'm unaware of any other running store in town that does this. Plus, the workers are super nice, attentive, and knowledgeable. Went in to buy a new pair of running shoes for an upcoming 10K. I did come here a few years before and was impressed with the knowledge of the people that work here. Today was no different! Ugh I wish I could remember the name of the guy who helped me today but he guided me through the whole process of picking out a great running shoe. He was very thorough explaining to me how I run and how the shoes differ from person to person depending on the way that they step. THE BEST SHOE STORE SERVICE IN HONOLULU. PERIOD. EXCELLENT. The only running I do is if someone is chasing me or I am late for the bus. However, I do a lot of slow motion running (also known as walking) so I was looking for either a good supportive walking slipper (my ancestral people would call this a flip-flop) or lightweight versatile trail sneakers, I visited innumerable shoe stores in Ward Warehouse, Ala Moana Center, Nordstroms, Sports Authority, etc. Found exactly what I wanted (for walking) at The Running Room. Really comfy Teva slippers with good arch support for $50. And the service was like a dream compared to any other store I shopped in. They had all the sizes in all the colors. They knew what made each shoe different from the one before it, besides just how it looked. They happily brought out lots of stuff for me to try. They had clean socks to use, and a place to put the dirty socks after you used them. When I asked for an opinion they offered a smart one. Perfection ! I stopped in a couple times recently because I've been running a lot more and wanted to check out their shoe selection. The first time, I wasn't sure if I needed new shoes yet. They asked me some questions, then based on my responses and by looking at the bottoms of my shoes, they suggested that I get a new pair soon.....but they didn't try to convince me to get something that day. That's so great! I hate being pressured to buy when I'm not ready. A few weeks later I came back (more tightness in my calves = definitely time for new shoes!). One of the girls looked at the wear on my shoe, and even asked me to walk around so she could watch my posture. She told me which types of shoes I should look at - ones that provide cushion only, not correction to your stride. I'm really partial to Asics. Unfortunately, the Running Room was completely out of the one she recommended. What impressed me was she proceeded to tell me that they wouldn't be getting that shoe anytime soon, so I should go to either Runner's Route or Sports Authority. I appreciated that she was honest and was looking out for me and my poor calves! Hopefully by the next time I need new shoes, The Running Room will have what I need. Your body has ways of telling you how naive you can be. So I wanted to start running. I put on my Nikes and started running a few times a week. That's when my knees told me to stop. My heart wanted to go, my pain receptors told me otherwise. After talking to a few people I ended up here. What was really cool was how helpful the staff was. Just by watching me walk, the dude was able to determine the kind of shoe I would need. He asked all the right questions, answered my gazillion questions, and I finally ended up with an awesome pair of running shoes that feel like I'm walking on pillows. While you're not paying the cheap sports authority prices, you will get the kind of customer service and specialty shoes that will allow you to continue living the active lifestyle you desire. My body still speaks to me, but more so the type of aches and pains that come from a good long, satisfying run. My body has profusely thanked me for getting real running shoes and I am very very thankful that I am able to continue running because of my fortuitous visit to this small, but special running store. I LOVE The Running Room! I've purchased two pairs of running shoes here in the last 6 months and the service is impeccable. They let you try on shoes and run around the block to see how they feel! Yes, this place is more expensive than chain stores or internets shops, but I would much rather support a local business who pays so much attention to their costumers! First pair - I wanted a pair of minimalist runners. Gaston worked with me for over an hour to make sure I found the perfect shoe. He explained how they should fit (big!), where they should be snug (heel!), where they should be lose (toes!), etc. He even let me take socks out of the packaging to try on before I purchased! Top notch! Second pair - I'd been increasing distance and wanted to try a shoe with more support. Again, Gaston hooked me up and took time to help just me, he wasn't busy helping several customers. I ended up with a great shoe, in a men's size to fit my wide lu'au feet! Also, I brought in the last pair I purchased (they ask you to do this). Gaston saw them and mentioned that they are no longer in production. What a bummer, it was a great line! Out of all the running stores I've been to on island, this is my 2nd favorite. Runners HI got bumped to last place after too many let-downs. Runners Route took #1. Admittedly, I have never actually purchased anything here though I've been many times. A few times I came with my friends who are marathoners and other times I came for packet pickups for a race I was doing. It's not for lack of shopping. I looked around, they seem to have a decent selection of shoes. The clothes are okay. They do have a wide selection of accessories for your serious runner. Their prices are nothing to brag about, as with most running stores, you pay out the butt for shoes. They have a section in the back of clearance shoes. From what I've been able to gather, their employees are nice and helpful. I still feel like every time I walk into a fitness store, people don't take me seriously. Oh well...I'm trying!! read more

Top notch! These guys are AWESOME! I am a beginner runner/jogger/walker/turtle. I am also participating in my first GAR and decided I needed actual running shoes and invest in good ones. So to the Running Room I went based off of the great reviews and store's location. It took me three tries to find the right shoes for me. I didnt catch the first guy that helped me but he watched how I walked and suggested a very comfortable and corrective shoe. Unfortunately, it wasn't the ones my feet were happy with. The service was great though. Greeted with a friendly smile and offered assistance right away. The guy listened to what I was looking for and what I had in mind for my ideal shoe. I went back to the store thinking its either the shoes, my lacing, or feet. This time, Kelsie helped me. She offered other shoe options but none of which my feet were happy with. We decided that perhaps it was my lacing and to give the same shoe another try. No such luck. Back to the store again and thankfully Kelsie was working again and remembered me and my shoe/feet issue and discomfort. I explained further what my feet were gripping about in its epic three mile 2nd chance run. I also had my dedicated workout shoes I ran in which my feet were more than happy in and Kelsie watched me run in those to survey my gait. After a quick analysis, she brought out five pairs of different shoes. Five!! She helped me sort out through process of elimination which shoes made my feet happy. The both times Kelsie helped me, I was allowed to run around their little block to see which shoes felt better and made my feet happy. Allowed me to try on and retry all the shoes, gave me feedback about what I my feet were feeling, and gave me all around great service. I found a new pair of shoes that I hope will allow my feet to be happy! If you need running shoes, I highly suggest checking out the Running Room. Pluses: -Friendly staff that ACTUALLY RUNS and knows what they are talking about. -Lots of shoes, running gear, shirts, lights, gu packets, etc. -Plenty parking! WHOA! -FRIENDLY STAFF! REALLY FRIENDLY, REALLY HELPFUL! -They ran a "black Friday" special and I got 20% off! I'm a wide, small footed kind of runner. Done a few marathons, shorter runs, and obstacle courses. I've bought my last three pairs of running shoes through this store, and every single time had the staff bring out multiple shoes, give friendly advice, and let you run around the store in the shoes just to try them out (outside the store!) They (the staff) are involved with a lot of the local running events, and they won't make you feel bad if you are just starting out with C25k programs, or if you are a match for the winners of the Honolulu marathon. They seem stoked that you want to run, and be outdoors. This is the kind of local store that deserves local support. Easy to get to, NO PRESSURE, and you know your money is going back into the local economy. It's expensive to run a business here on Oahu, but these guys been around a long time, and I imagine they will be in business a long time from now. They are doing plenty things right! Honestly, BEST RUNNING STORE EVERRRRRRRR. I have been dropping by every few weeks to pick up glucose gels for my training/races. The staff has been extremely helpful. They even share their pre-race regimen with me which I like since I'm incredibly new at distance running and have no clue about what my body needs or when it needs it. (Damn me for sleeping in my sports nutrition class during undergrad.) This store needs to be on everyone's top list of you're a jogger or runner! read more
