One of my favorite Middle Eastern restaurants in the city so far! I highly recommend the mixed meat plate, especially if you are new to this cuisine. The plate will give you a good idea of what each meat tastes like - they are all so distinct and flavored so well. The plate also comes with a yummy home made hummus that had me licking my plate. I got the combo but the lentil soup was really nothing to write home about. It was very bland- even after adding pepper. Save yourself a couple extra bucks and just get the plate by itself. Really didn't have a chance to try the food. I ordered and then walked out after waiting 10 or more minutes. They helped two people who came in after us first. No explanation given. No sorry. We were just standing there like idiots. Plates had not even been started. There were only a few people in the restaurant. While waiting, the lady preparing an earlier order was told to put rice back from the plate because it was too much. That's stingy as hell and was another tipping point. Only one of few times that I've walked out from a restaurant. Maybe it was an off day but there are basics that aren't hard to follow with regard to customer service, like first come first serve, letting you know if/when you have to wait in excess, apologies for the wait, and they get an F for that. Clarification on reply by owner: I actually ordered a chicken shwarma plate and my husband is the one that ordered an all in one. My plate wasn't made either. And neither was given explanation. I eat at Rumi five times a week, and frankly that isn't enough to do it justice. Every menu item I've had has been divine. Everything is perfectly spiced and placed at a great value, especially considering the amount and quality of food. The staff is always welcoming and the space is rustic yet minimal. Absolutely love how close this Mediterranean grill is to me! I love the chicken kabob plate. My boyfriend also got the all in platter so I was able to try to chicken shawarma (a little dry), kefta (delicious), gyro (a little dry), and falafel (delicious). Out of all the meat options, the chicken kabob is my favorite. Generally speaking, the food isn't as oily as other Mediterranean places, so that was a plus for me. I also "checked in" and was able to try the free baklava offer. I am giving it 4 stars because I noticed (after eating this three times in one week) that they included hummus (I didn't pay for the add on) in my plate when I ate in the restaurant, but not when I ordered take out. I love this place! Pre-Covid-19, I stopped by here for lunch at least once a week. Since the pandemic shutdown, I am sure that this family-owned business is struggling--but if you go to their website: https://www.rumifalafel.com you can order everything for pick-up or delivery. The food is fantastic--best falafel I have ever had--and all sorts of other middle eastern staples. And their Baba Ganoush is the best with perfect smokey eggplant taste. My first time here I had a falafel sandwich and chicken shawarma with fries and rice it was good. 7/10 .. The second time I got the "All in platter" and it didn't really taste authentic. First impression walking in the door was place smelled bad, like sewer gas smell. Atmosphere: The walls and ceiling were painted and looked sharp and clean. Floor looked old and dingy. Table & Chairs were adequate. Food: SMALL portions, kebab was small nuggets, and sides were minimal. Overall tasted good enough, kebob was a little tough. Definitely not the best middle eastern restaurant I've been to. Deal breaker: I skipped other sides, asked for a minimal amount of another - but asked for a more salad instead and was told "that would be extra"!!!! Since I essentially was trading and not getting other items, they wouldn't have lost money, not to mention it was an insignificant amount for their business What they did lose was a new customer who will never go back. read more

This review is long overdue, as I've visited Rumi over a dozen times and love it. I'm lucky there are a few different Middle Eastern restaurants in the area, but this has been my favorite by far. All of their meats are delicious and the falafel is A+ (perfectly fried IMO). The veggies are all fresh and the tzatziki sauce and spicy sauce are good too. Prior to moving to Chicago, I had visited Rumi once before last year during my birthday in July. I had never been in Wicker Park, but a friend brought me there to explore. Walking down Milwaukee, I spotted a Middle Eastern restaurant, but had never eaten Middle Eastern food before, let alone Mediterranean at all. I decided to give it a try and it was one of the best decisions ever. The crew at Rumi provide such a warm and welcoming environment, along with quick service. I'm probably there at least once or twice every week or so to order my beef shawarma pita. The food is incredibly fresh, marinated to perfection, and seasoned so perfectly. You really won't find a better middle eastern grill anywhere else in the city, and I've had the opportunity to go to quite a few different places since I've moved here, but I'll always come back to Rumi as my favorite place to eat in Chicago. Breakfast was becoming an increasingly distant memory. We were into mid-afternoon wandering through the Wicker Park area while looking for a Blue line stop. We found ourselves standing in front of Rumi Middle Eastern Grill. Glancing in the window the door opened and a wonderful aroma of spices and grilling meat wafted out to greet us. We were enticed by this introduction and decided to give it a try. We were greeted by several friendly people behind the counter as we reviewed the menu. We settled on a Falafel Sandwich, Chicken Shawarma Sandwich, and side orders of Hummus and Baba Ghanoush. The falafel and chicken shawarma sandwiches included pickles, cabbage, and other additions that added to the flavor. The falafel was crispy and well spiced in this excellent sandwich. Adding a little tahini sauce was a nice accent to this delectable falafel pita. The chicken shawarma included similar additions in the pita and was one of the best chicken shawarma sandwiches we have ever eaten. The combination of spices and preparation was superior and made this choice special. The hummus was smooth and had a very good flavor. The baba ghanoush was also special with its combination of mashed eggplant, tahini, seasoning, and olive oil. Yum. Next time we are in the area we will definitely return to Rumi Middle Eastern Grill for its delicious and well prepared dishes. read more

My dad devoured his plate -and although i didn't try it myself he had rave reviews and said he would order it again . Honestly the chicken wrap was one of the best I've tried so far. I went to rumi grill because of the reviews I saw online and I'm a fan of middle eastern food. I had the chicken kabob plate with all the toppings on it. The chicken kabob was amazing. This has become the go to spot for my dad and I whenever we're grabbing dinner out. Their menu is pretty straightforward, but it's all delicious; it's always fresh; and their service is always delightful. We've ordered pretty much everything but fries at least once at this point, and nothing's disappointed. As a consequence and despite (or maybe because of!) never being able to finish it, my dad has settled into the all-in plate. He's basically decided he's comfortable never being able to or having to decide between the options he enjoys. As a vegetarian, I default to their falafel & lentil soup with absolutely no complaints. It's hard to think of what more to say, because it's just good. I mean, I could go in depth about the impressive flavorfulness of their tahini (which is impressive), but it all comes down to just: Their food is really good. Their service is great.
