This is a fantastic store both in terms of pet supplies and general customer service. I've been shopping here for nearly 2 years (1-2 visits per month) and I've never had a bad experience. The closest I've came is when they ran out of the only dog food one of my dogs can eat. This wasn't their fault as the truck was delayed due to the extreme winter storms. They offered to sell me the smaller more expensive bags at the same price per pound as I would have paid for my regular bag. Then they called me to let me know when the shipment arrived and set aside a bag for me. How nice is that?! The staff seem to be authentically interested in assisting customers, unlike many stores who have employees who seem annoyed when anyone shops there. Also, the selection of products is great. If you have pets and want the best for them AND you want to know that the staff is there to assist if you should need it, this is definitely the store for you. read more

Rumford Pet is the best pet store in town. The employees are always super helpful and friendly. I have 3 cats and Tony and Kayla are always willing to help me find products and are always accommodating. They are the best! And the products are more affordable than many other places. Also, I love the fact that every four or five trips there, I am able to save even more money because of points that add up. And Tony and Kayla as well as the others, always make sure I get my discount! It's like "CHEERS', where everyone knows your name! A great place to shop! read more

Used the self wash station for my Rottweiler & had such a great experience. I've been to SW stations before that give you a max of 30 mins to get in & out but for large breed owners thats barely enough time to get the shampoo out! Haha. $14 for shampoo & conditioner ($12 if you bring your own) and they have sooo many different options for you to chose the best one that fits your pups needs. The young women at the counter were very helpful & were so sweet to my Django bear! They also have a rewards where after the 5th wash , your next one is free! The store is a good size and a variety of products for your pet......The coworkers are very nice and helpful....There was an adoption event from Save One Soul Animal Rescue League.....It was nice to see the dogs interact with everyone....... Well I have to disagree with the other posters. Though I to hate the fact the dogs are in cages for display, they are not from a puppy mill. Once you buy the dog you are shown who the dog was breed with. Both dogs and owners information. I have heard of puppy mills, but these dogs are shown with pictures of them sitting with owners at there house. I know puppy mills are bad and don't want to support them in any way. But I do believe that Rumford is trying to do things the right way. The staff is very helpful and they have all the supplies you will need. My dog is very healthy and was treated very well by the staff, I could not be happier with my purchase! read more

Rumford Pet Center is conveniently located right next to Trader Joe's. They carry a good selection of high quality dog foods. Both of those are great, and in combo with it being a local business I would love to support them. However, they sell puppies - puppies from puppy mills in KS, etc. I played with a couple of them and asked where they were from - all you get is the name of the facility and the state, and they are all from the states where puppy mills are legal. You obviously can't see pictures of the parents, and there are NO genetic tests done on the dogs. The saddest thing is that the unwanted puppies are discounted in price until they are purchased (I was assured every puppy gets purchased eventually) - but that can take up to 6 months. I played with a chinese crested puppy whose price was down to $350 (from the original price in their typical $1500-$2000 range, $3500 for bulldogs). This puppy turned in circles when I tried to play with it - it obviously had been in the cage so long its muscles had gotten habituated to circling when excited. It was one of the saddest things I've ever seen. I know from experience there are responsible, local breeders for almost all of these types of dogs. For the same price as a Rumford puppy you can get one from a breeder where you can meet the parents AND get certificates of health testing. It just takes a little more legwork. I have to agree with most of the posters. I started shopping at Rumford to support a local business (and I also shop at TJ's next door regularly). But 2 major strikes for me: first and foremost, the puppies in cages. Can't stand it. Whether they're from a puppy mill or a breeder, do you really want an animal that's been confined like that? 2nd strike is their opening time. They don't open til 10am. By then, I've done my shopping and am already back home. Not convenient for me at all. Rumford Pet gets 5 stars from me. For the record, all those bad reviews about selling puppies are totally outdated. They have not sold puppies for years. Fortunately trends and times change. I find the personal to be attentive and helpful. They are informed about brands and current of any recalls. And... they offer a FULL REFUND if your furry friend doesn't agree with your purchase. Cheerfully! And did I mention convenience... I literally roll my full grocery cart, from Trader Joe's next door, into Rumford Pet and shop for my pup and boom. Done and done. read more

One: it depresses me to walk in and see desperate puppies wanting a home so badly! No pet store should sell pets, they're are to many that need good homes in shelters. Two: I bought 2 expensive toys for my 8mo old puppy who proceeded to ruin them w/in 30 mins. I took the toys away and brought them right back. The young mgr said she would not return them for me, and "that's what dogs do." no kidding that's what they do, that's why I buy them toys. If you're selling a product that says it won't rip b/c it's tough you should honor your vendors word. The mgr let me walk out, unhappy and even after i told her id never shop there again. Puppy bought here is awesome, however he also hadnt had a bath/nail trim in almost a month and the biggest problem was this place let him live with kennel cough untreated we found out when we brought him home! They are reimbursing for meds but still you're letting animals suffer untreated....wrong! Oh man this place... I went to Rumfords because I needed some odor eliminating spray for a cat box. Seeing as I had never been here, and generally go to petco, I found the nearest employee and asked for her help. She immediately looked annoyed that I was asking her help, then proceeded to ask me if I had looked in the cat section, because she had never heard of something like I was looking for... I was then directed over to the litter and told I should try a new litter and the one she recommended I told her I used, she looked at me like I was lying and said no one else had ever had a problem with that litter. I explained to her that I saw a spray online and that you use daily to make the smell not as potant and she flat out told me IT DIDN'T EXIST. At this point I just said I would look on my own, and proceeded to walk out. This is where it gets silly. The same women, as I was walking out, asked me if I was able to find anything and when I said no SHE OFFERED ME THE SAME LITTER I HAD ALREADY TOLD HER I USE saying that it should fix the issue. I just laughed and said no thank you and left. I felt a little stupid when I checked my GPS and saw there was a petco within walking distance (and when I went there they had a multitude of the sprays I was looking for) I can't see why ANYONE would go here, the only reason it gets two stars and not one is because it didn't have that typical pet store smell. read more

I bought my dog from Rumford's and she was very sick for the first 5 weeks she was home with me. Luckily, Rumford's did pay for all her medical bills, but when I stopped in the store to pick up paperwork for her, they asked me how she was and I was completely honest with them. They denied she was sick because of them which is completely ridiculous since she had been sick while she was with them! They keep the dogs in cages in this store which upsets me every time I walk in. I am a sucker for animals and although I am sure they are being treated alright, there are others ways of keeping the dogs. I've seen plenty of places that keep them in plastic kennels and they seem happier. They have a nice selection of pet food, but way over priced. The do have a great selection of toys (my dog always leaves with something), but again, the prices always astound me. For a local business, they can be so much better! The staff needs some lessons in being friendly as well! read more

My girlfriend and I stopped in here to look for the food we usually get for our dog at petco and the employee was super knowledgeable on the different kinds of foods for our dogs breed! The laughter you hear when you enter is the sound of happy people playing with the caged puppies (painful, I know, but I can't deny their cuteness - we will continue to rescue but I still want to play with them). Rumford Pet Center in Warwick is the place to go if you want to buy a sickly, ill bred puppy mill dog. After the East Providence location ran out of excuses for why they were always selling puppies that were ill in one fashion or another, they now house them all at the Warwick location. Shopping here supports the legal but unethical and inhumane puppy mill industry. If you think these puppies come from reputable breeders like they claim, I've got a bridge and some swamp land I'd like you to consider purchasing. You can get all your pet supplies elsewhere, whether it be a local business or online, and by doing so you'll be showing RPC that just because what they are doing is legal, that doesn't mean it's right. read more

Very friendly young staff. They no longer sell puppies thank goodness. They renovated that side of the store and now have more store inventory there. You can't even tell they ever had puppies. I buy my dog's Spa brand shampoo and conditioner there, as well as Merrick dog food. read more

Absolutely love it here, prices are fair and they have a huge selection of food, toys, and treats. I am in here about once a week for my 2 Maltese! The ladies that work there are always so friendly and knowledgable. If it weren't for them, I would have never discovered bully sticks and canned pumpkin to cure loose stool. I was devastated when I lost my sweet shih tzu. Finding another one through a breeder was non-existing at that time and believe me, I wanted another pup...now. A friend went with me to the the Ea Prov store and I too felt awful that I was actually going to be buying a dog "there". My pup that I chose was VERY healthy and my vet voiced this also. She is all the dogs that I have loved wrapped up into her 12lb body. My husband "Mr. no more dogs" just adores her. I would not hesitate EVER to purchase a healthy, well adjusted pup from Rumford. ps...I'm also a huge advocate for local pound dogs and have had many through out my life and they had hugh issues (medically). Any dog, in my opinion needs a loving home and this I will always provide. A home is not complete..without the pitter patter of doggie feet. read more

I know several breeders. A good breeder would NEVER sell their dog to a pet store. Breeders want to know who their puppy is going to and if they are going to good home. Plus a majority (if not all) want a contract signed stating that you'll have the puppy spayed/neutered within a certain period of time, with a stipulation that you are not allowed to breed their dogs. These breeders are not selling their dogs to pet stores. Pet stores are getting their dogs from other sources, whether that is backyard breeders, puppy mills, etc. Believe whatever you want. If you really think it through, you'll realize... these are not puppies from a good, reputable breeder. Therefore, you could be getting a dog that is sick or has genetic issues because the person who bred the dog, didn't really know what they were doing. read more

(I'm going to put aside the whole puppy mill -it's disheartening at best) I DO buy premium dog food there (as I shop TJ!!) but... a 30 lb bag at $50 bucks...and the GUY at the register says "Yeah, can you put that on the counter?"...wt F? Are you kidding? Get your elbows off the counter, walk over and scan this sucker. I will not you 20 something. Your lucky, I'm not online ordering this bag and having it delivered to my door. (Which is now my thought-it's one dollar LESS if I go on a program delivery-free shipping) It's so sad that they don't get it- put down your phone, your 'tude etc...part of what we pay for___ pays your wages- you ignorant buggers. Stopped in for the first time last week, I don't live in the area. An employee came right over to me as I looked around clueless. She was so helpful and knowledgeable about all of the dog foods. I ended up switching food for my dog because of her, she was so caring and made me love my dog even more! I believe her name was Danielle. I know what I'm getting when I go into rumford, my dogs have specific allergies and I feed them a brand that very few establishments carry. Today I had someone offer to help me get my 2 30lb bags into my cart. At the register I was offers loading assistance. I had a wonderful experience buying my dog from Rumford Pet Center. The staff was friendly and knowledgable, and I came home with a happy new family member. My puppy was healthy, from a breeder ( all infromation was supplied) and is akc registered. I would definitely go back. I only wish they had cats as well. I've been wanting to adopt another cat after losing one to heart disease after 14 years. The few animal shelters I've contacted have been very difficult to deal with. They are not upfront about their adoption policies, and only tell you about them after your children select a cat. The last thing a child needs is to be dissapointed after losing a pet. read more

I bought both of my dogs at Rumford Pet Center. One nine years ago and the other three years ago and both are extremely healthy. My nine year old came from the East Providence store and was highly recommended by a breeder whom i was trying to buy a dog from and she had no puppies available at the time. My three year old came from the Warwick Store and i opted to go there due to the great experience i had with my first dog. While there are a couple of staff members who seem to prefer talking to one another or playing on their cell phones, the majority have been welcoming, friendly and helpful. If you usually use a supermarket type dog food, chances are you won't find it at Rumford Pet Center. However, if you are concerned about feeding your dog quality food that is holistic, grain-free, or made in Canada or the U.S. that does not contain food from China or Japan, they have a large selection to choose from. For the record, I've looked around and their prices are equal to the lowest prices you will find on Amazon. Their toys and accessories are usually equal in price or cheaper than the other local pet stores too. Until March I had NEVER considered buying a dog. For decades, I brought the "unwanted orphans" into my home and into my life. I knew in my heart that my 15 yr. old dog wasn't going to make it through the summer and wanted another one. After visiting some shelters and not feeling a "bond" with any of the dogs I met, I decided to take a walk into Rumford Pet Center. While they are adorable, I'm not easily won over by puppies - especially bratty ones who've been cooped up in cages all day. I prefer calm, relaxed, confident dogs and one "big" girl had everything I wanted in my next 4-legged companion. I spent about two hours with her that day. I learned that shortly after she arrived at the store from a farm in Missouri, she got sick with kennel cough, ear infections and worms. However she was finally cleared by their vet and was ready for her forever home. Although I felt guilty about buying a puppy "farm" dog, she really was perfect for me so I decided to take her home. Less than a week later, she developed a urinary track infection and needed an antibotic. The store reimbursed me for her vet fee because it was within a week after her purchase. Since then she's been healthy, delightful and bratty and everything in between. She's attended puppy socials, and goes to "puppy school." She's a quick study and has graduated to Level 2. While she's usually very good, she is still a BIG puppy and does puppy-like things. However, I am very disappointed that she still does not look like the breed she's supposed to be. We paid more for her than we would have if we worked directly with a local breeder. She was expensive!! This is one of the downsides of buying from a petstore - or a shelter. For the record - it is very hard to housebreak a petstore pup when you work a full-time job, have to run your kids here and there, and generally don't have the patience to clean up a lot of "accidents." Whether you get your dog from a breeder, a shelter, or a petstore, your dog will only be as "good" and "disciplined" as you are at helping it to learn to live up to and adjust to the imposed expectations of our human world. read more

I've been in here on several occasions (it's right next to Trader Joe's) and while the prices seem to be cheaper than other places and it seems very nice, I just cannot in good conscience purchase something from a store which sells puppies. Every time I go in I just end up feeling terrible for all these baby puppies in little Lucite boxes. I'm sure they're treated well, but how good can life be when you're stuck in a Lucite box for probably 20 hours a day? And I would LOVE to support a small local business, but I usually end up shopping at a big box pet store. I just feel like selling puppies is wrong and I don't want to support that. read more

Absolutely filthy place. The puppies are adorable, but are always covered in dander and feces. On multiple occasions i have played with puppies that had feces smeared all over their faces, and the staff of "lovely young girls" did nothing about it when i informed them. Love the selection of food but I cringe when I see the puppies locked up in spaces that are too small for them. I won't even look in that direction anymore. The first and only time I looked several puppies were anxiously spinning around in tiny circles and whimpering. Broke my heart to think this is how they confine them for display. Where to begin? I brought my family into this store on Saturday Oct, 8th. My wife and 10 year old son fell in love with a Lhasa Apso puppy. I spoke with the employee who told me that they wouldn't take a deposit but would hold the dog untill noon the following day. As our discretionary money is in a trust,accessible only by an attorney, I went to my attorney's home the next morning for a check for the price of the dog. I then packed up the family and made the 30 mile trek back to Warwick for the dog. Seeing the youth of the attendant on duty,I thought it would be wise to explain the whole check thing to her before even attempting to buy the dog. A wall went up where her smile had been. "We don't take checks" was her mantra. I asked to speak with her manager. She arrived after an interminable wait and showed herself to be equally young and equally intransigent. I offered to let them hold the dog until the funds cleared after a few days. Sorry, she said, we don't hold dogs and we don't take checks. Like talking to a wall. Some flexibility is to be expected when making such a large purchase in a down economy. I left and took my disappointed family later that afternoon to a reputable breeder of Golden Retreivers. We have a new puppy,happy kids and saved hundreds of dollars. We won't be returning and we will certainly steer people away from this store. read more

Former puppy mill puppy seller, though thank goodness they have moved away from that part of their business. The store is huge, but it always feels dirty to me. I only come occasionally because it's not in my neck of the woods. The parking lot is a disaster during peak times because Trader Joe's is next door. They do carry my dog's hard to find food, but they are expensive and have a less than stellar selection. I prefer a smaller local shop for his food and online for toys and other supplies. But, in a pinch, RPC works. read more

I bought a Schnoodle puppy from Rumford in November 2011 , he was 3 months old and I have even taken him to the vet they suggested in the paperwork. I have a very happy, healthy puppy who is bringing my family lots of joy. I had him neutered by their vet and all has been well. I went to Rumford Pet Center because a neighbor bought her puppy there and they are also very happy. I also found the staff very helpful. I dealt with a girl named Heather, she was great. She even gave me her e-mail in case I had any questions! That is great customer service! I would buy there again. read more

I bought my puppy at this store. i had to buy her. i felt so bad to see her stuck in that tiny cage. when we got her home and took her out to the back yard she was scared to go onto the grass we realized she had never been outside before. such a sad life for such a beautiful baby girl. she is now in a loving home and im so glad we got her. read more

I have read everyone's comments, and I dont really get it. We just bought a pup from there a few months ago. Its our third dog from Rumford Pet Center in 6 years. We have had kennel cough as well. Its just a cold for a dog. Your kids have colds too and they are not "defective". Everyone has also stated that Rumford has covered your bills.. What else do you want. I love this store. It has the most "Healthy" dog food choices of any store I have been too. Prices are comparable to any giant chain, and the staff is great and helpful. read more
